I use several of the above programs. One thing I see is the usual debates saying X is better than Y, don't use Z and so on.

Most of the material on the web is heavily based just on personal preferences and marketing material.

In a position I once held, we had to do some fairly serious testing of security products for a large financial institution and bank. One very good resource we found to be independent and with a very good coverage was Virus Bulletin (among others). Many of the antivirus products make reference to VB100 awards they get when their product is tested.

http://www.virusbtn.com/ (It's worth registering a free account because you get access to all the past reports).

Bob, Clamwin is just a scanner. If you download a virus accidentally on the web and open it you will become infected.

There are a bunch of freebies, my favorite the one you don't like by Kaspersky (a service of AOL).

second favorite

Antivir- http://www.free-av.com/

AVG- http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1 (never really used)

Avast- http://www.avast.com/ (never used)

PC Tools Antivirus free version- http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/ (never used)

PC Tools Firewall Plus (free)- http://www.pctools.com/firewall/ (never used)

Comodo- www.comodogroup.com (their antivirus doesn't have a that high detection rate though)

http://daol.aol.com/safetycenter/virus (also by aol) whole suite. The Antivirus and the firewall are powered by Mcafee and the Antispyware I think is powered by Computer Associates PestPatrol, not too sure about the other parts of the program.

And to Masa Kaspersky has one of the best detection rates in the business, even higher than Mcafee's.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2007_02.php

I am being to think that those that are having trouble trying to activate their software maybe do to so-called good security software. Meaning it is blocking the Windows registration changes that the software needs to register the software. <sigh>
