Crystal, assuming your netbook met the minimum requirements for the latest offerings then you installed something that "broke" your system. The possibilities include:
- the last successful GOTD installation
- a program installed after the last successful GOTD installation
- a Windows Update installed after the last successful GOTD installation

You should review your "Installed Programs" list and determine when the last GOTD installation occurred and what, if any, programs were installed after it. Then review the "Installed Updates" list and determine what, if any, Windows Updates were installed after it. A bunch of Updates came out on the 11th, which reasonably coincides with the start of your issue, so I'd start with uninstalling them first (turning off automatic update beforehand) and see if the problem disappears.

I'm having the same problem with my win 7 64 bit netbook for 4 days now. When I run setup.exe (each day's GAOTD program); the 'checking giveaway availability' pops up and then the 'successfully activated' window pops up and that's it. Setup never completes.
Initially I thought it was a problem with the windows installer, but I've successfully downloaded and installed other programs.

So, here's what I've tried so far:
1. turned off firewall and anti-virus;
2. downloaded and extracted with both IE 9 and firefox 15; placed files in different folders for IE and firefox;
3. ran setup.exe as admin;
4. checked the discussion mentioned above and noticed that the files (exe and gcd) were 'blocked'. unblocked them and tried again, still doesn't work.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I'm ready to give up on this site.

Thanks, Crystal

Make sure that you extract the entire contents of the giveaway download. Win 7 has a tendency to make zip files look as though they have already been extracted when in fact they haven't. You have to press the extract button to make sure. In addition all files need to be in the same folder for the install to work properly.
Also be aware that some antivirus software will quarantine the .gcd file with little or no warning to you. Check your quarantined files folder if an install won't run or alternately suspend your antivirus software for a couple of minutes while you install the giveaway.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Try using a different file archiver to unpack the giveaway. I've posted links to several different freeware versions such as J-Zip and 7 Zip over in the Games discussion forums. find the FAQ's sticky and you'll find the links, or just google one of the names above.

Recently, whenever I have downloaded, unzipped, and tried to run the setup.exe files, the program never finishes its startup, so that I see anything on screen - no window, no messages, nothing. Program getting hung?

I don't know whether it has anything to do with the .GCD file (I never had any problems before the change to include this file in each GAOTD package.), or if something has changed on my computer.

Any suggestions? Is there a module that is being expected?

Just so you don't waste too much time trying to get the key, that key was only valid while the giveaway was running.

The giveaway key can no longer be used to install the product.

No doesn't take a few hours.

Say you have a compressed folder and you select in winrar 'extrat to' it does here extraction or a decrompessed folder of the same name as the rar file.

Say my system is up for lets say 1 hour, the 'extract to' under winrar works fine, then when you do the same function later in winrar it does not do that function but pkzip it does.

If you catch my drift.

Hello,

What is this about the free licenses? I downloaded it and when I check the license, there was already a number written on it. I checked the "licenses for other PKware products and it listed two products. One is called "Secured Zip w/email for windows, version 11.0 and the license key is the same one shown in the previous window.
The other product is called PKZip Self-Extractors for Windows, version 7.0 and it has a license key that I do not recognize. Doesn't PKZip come with windows already?

I am worried about what Lee said because I also have WinRar. I don't understand very well the problem you are describing. I have disabled all the associations that secureZIP automatically sets for itself and put them back in WinRar which, so far, is the only one I use and I have had no problems using it so far.

If I understand what you are saying, Lee, is that if you extract a compressed file using WinRar and it takes a few hours to finish the job, WinRar dies all of the sudden? If that is the case, then I am getting rid of it immediately. Can you please describe a set of steps that shows how secureZIP breaks WinRar? I like free software, but not if it is going to break the software I have paid for.

Thanks,

-Mario

I have been trying this application out past 4 days and it for some reason stops winrar
(well parts of it working).

When you right click a compressed folder and use 'extract to' in winrar it dies after
a few hours.

So I have uninstalled it and won't be using it again.

Not for you to worry, I will say thanks to you from all those that got the file for nothing.

It does pretty much similar to winrar.

So hopefully people will get this for free and not pirate winrar.

Secure email attachments, and supplement the WinXP ZIP handling - from PKWARE, the inventor of ZIP.

For a limited time, free single user licence. Never mind the security aspect, just use it as a run of the mill zip program, if that's all you want.
