Highly critical zero day vulnerability in Windows discovered

Secunia has reported that an unpatched security vulnerability in the 64-bit version of Windows 7 may be able to be exploited to inject and execute malicious code; currently, the only known exploit causes the system to crash.

It is possible to trigger a memory error in the system file win32k.sys

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/why-do-linux-fanatics-want-to-make-windows-8-less-secure/4100

Summary: Windows 8 isn’t even in beta yet, and already the FUD is flying fast and furious. A small group of activists are whipping up controversy over the UEFI secure boot feature even as they admit the feature is “valuable and worthwhile.” Here’s the real story.
People who make their living in the Linux ecosystem are demanding that Microsoft disable a key security feature planned for Windows 8 so that malware authors can continue to infect those PCs and drive their owners to alternate operating systems.
Oh, wait. Now that I think about it, that’s actually pretty close to the truth.
The most disappointing part of this whole phony controversy is that its ringleaders have managed to suck in some people who should know better. Like Ross Anderson, Professor of Security Engineering at the University of Cambridge Computing Laboratory, who wrote this last month:
I hear that Microsoft (and others) are pushing for this to be mandatory, so that it cannot be disabled by the user, and it would be required for OS badging.
This is grossly incorrect. It is disappointing that a university researcher who should believe in scientific rigor and respect for facts would spread a rumor that begins “I hear that…”
I can say that generally speaking, AMI will advise OEMs to provide a default configuration that allows users to enable / disable secure boot, but it remains the choice of the OEM to do (or not do) so. [Emphasis added]

http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/secure-boot-vs-restricted-boot/statement

Stand up for your freedom to install free software
The following is a public statement, open for signing. For more background, please read our more detailed explanation of the issue at http://fsf.org/campaigns/secure-boot-vs-restricted-boot.
Microsoft has announced that if computer makers wish to distribute machines with the Windows 8 compatibility logo, they will have to implement a measure called "Secure Boot." However, it is currently up for grabs whether this technology will live up to its name, or will instead earn the name Restricted Boot.
When done correctly, "Secure Boot" is designed to protect against malware by preventing computers from loading unauthorized binary programs when booting. In practice, this means that computers implementing it won't boot unauthorized operating systems -- including initially authorized systems that have been modified without being re-approved.
However, we are concerned that Microsoft and hardware manufacturers will implement these boot restrictions in a way that will prevent users from booting anything other than Windows. In this case, we are better off calling the technology Restricted Boot, since such a requirement would be a disastrous restriction on computer users and not a security feature at all.

http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/secure-boot-vs-restricted-boot/

However, it is currently up for grabs whether this technology will live up to its name, or will instead earn the name Restricted Boot.

According to that article, looks like Windows 8 is geared towards touch screen and who wants that for a desktop? As it is we have fingerprint smeared digital cameras. I'm one of that 50% sticking to XP.. as in another topic discussed, I just made the addition to SP3 for SP2 on XP and I'm not in the market for anything else that's new and 'improved'! As the old saying goes: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"!

Summary: Could Microsoft have trouble getting desktop and notebook users to move to Windows 8?
Is Microsoft in danger of turning Windows 7 into the new Windows XP?
What do I mean by that? Well, take a look at the usage share statistics for Windows XP. Despite being two versions out of date it still commands an almost 50% usage share. People are holding onto XP for dear life rather than opening their wallets and upgrading to the latest and greatest.
Could this be a problem facing Microsoft when it tries to get people to upgrade to Windows 8? It could well be
And if they don’t want touch, why upgrade to Windows 8.

There’s a report circulating — originating with a Red Hat employee — that says Microsoft’s new secure-boot functionality in Windows 8 could preclude users from running both Windows and Linux on their PCs.
True or false? Well-grounded or unfounded? Microsoft execs will not comment — which is leading many to assume it’s true.

http://www.techspot.com/news/45579-windows-8-security-feature-could-block-dual-booting-linux.html

After years of trying to cut off Linux growth as a desktop platform on x86 and x64 PCs, Microsoft may have actually figured out a way to stop Linux deployments on client PCs dead in their tracks.

Microsoft: Don't blame us if Windows 8's secure boot requirement blocks Linux dual-boot
“For the enthusiast who wants to run older operating systems, the option (disabling secure boot) is there to allow you to make that decision,” said the Microsoft blog post. (The statement didn’t specify whether this is a reference to older versions of Windows only or if it also applies to Linux and other operating systems.)
Windows 8 utilizes secure boot to ensure that the pre-OS environment is secure
By mandating UEFI secure boot support as a Windows 8 requirement, Microsoft is attempting to better secure Windows machines, which is a good thing, obviously. Some have suggested those wanting dual-boot simply run Linux in a VM on Windows 8. But, as the relatively small contingent of users who want to dual-boot Linux note, if the requirement results in users who pay for Windows machines being unable to use them in the way they want, is this fair — or even legal? Thoughts, readers?

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/22/protecting-the-pre-os-environment-with-uefi.aspx#10215592

With Windows 8’s secured boot architecture and its establishment of a root of trust, the customer is protected from malicious code executing in the boot path by ensuring that only signed, certified “known good” code and boot loaders can execute before the operating system itself loads.

* Metro Applications Restricted to Windows Store *
IconWhy, would you look at this. All this time we were expecting Apple to be the first one to flip the switch and limit desktop users to Mac App Store applications and turn Mac OS X into a walled garden, but in fact, Microsoft will be the first to flip this switch. As it turns out, Metro applications can only be installed through the Windows Store
if no GOTD downloads the end of windows

Microsoft's Windows 8 will offer some tweaks to file management, particularly in how files are copied between locations, according to an official blog post.
Microsoft’s trickle of official details about Windows 8 continues at a steady pace, with a new corporate blog posting that details the new-and-improved copy experience.
Small potatoes, you say? According to Microsoft, that’s not the case.
“Copying, moving, renaming, and deleting are far and away the most heavily used features within Windows Explorer, representing 50 percent of total command usage (based on Windows 7 telemetry data),”

This leak comes from PCBeta (and BetaArchive) and shows the Windows Developer Preview Setup, rumoured to come straight from Windows 8 build 6.2.8064.0.FBL_EEAP.110806-1000; which as the string suggests was built on August 6th.

Thanks hotdog.

I'm looking forwards to actually seeing Win 8 released. Though i'm totally pleased with win 7. As far as i'm concerned it's been the bet version of windows to date. I've had win 7 installed for a year now and have not had one BSOD, also the OS runs as well now as it did when I first installed it.

Although that could be expllained by the extra RAM i purchased as I knew that i'd finally be able to utilize the spare space on my MoBo, so upgraded to 6Gb with another 2Gb space if i feel i need it.

I still run a copy of Win XP Pro and Vista Home Premium, but both of them are not as good IMO. I only keep them becaue of the game reviews I do for the gamegiveaway's on a weekend. I used to love XP, but when i saw all the extra's that you get with win 7, (inclding the ability to run an image of XP if required (only with the Pro and Ultimate editions)

Windows 8 and the ARM Revolution: The Pros and Cons
(May be the End of Windows we all run ARM)

Not 64-bit: All ARM chips are currently 32-bit and ARM has yet to release a 64-bit design. In theory this limits ARM computers to just 4GB of RAM, but in up-coming ARM chips this limitation will be bypassed by including a 40-bit memory controller that allows ARM computers to access up to a terabyte of memory
Back before even Windows 7 was launched Microsoft announced that its successor, Windows 8, would be the very last version of Windows to support the old 32-bit architecture.

“The Windows 7 numbers are spectacular for an operating system that hasn't yet released for global availability. Even better, about 1/3rd of Windows 7 Microsoft Security Essentials machines are 64-bit, which is even more resistant to malware than 32-bit due to PatchGuard,” Faulhaber noted.

I can't wait until official release of windows 8 - sounds like it will be wonderful :)

FWIW logic says it'll be a lot like win7 -- too much biz use where the hyped interface changes & cloud stuff will not always be embraced. Those features will be there, but like win7 supporting a touch interface now, that doesn't mean you will or have to use them. Also FWIW, Microsoft is allegedly taking a cue from the Apple & *nix worlds -- more or less a One OS to Rule Them All approach, if you'll forgive the LOR ref... one version of Windows that'll run on your phone, netbook, tablet, laptop, & desktop PC.

If it helps at all, I've monitored/tracked hundreds of app installs in win7... with the vast majority there's little or no difference installing &/or running compared to XP. Win7 64 bit does have Wow6432Node sections, & a 32 bit app for example will put its key(s) in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node rather than HKLM\SOFTWARE, but not both places, so there's no increase in number of entries added. However win7 [32 &/or 64 bit] does have more tracking & compatibility functions, & especially with less compatible apps, that can add to the totals -- in my experience it doesn't happen always but it does happen, usually with another 30-100 entries added. In a small handful of cases when win7 doesn't like the app at all, 10s or even 100s of thousands of new, temporary registry entries may result, but I've never found a trace of those keys/values after a re-boot. Win7 can also try to virtualize registry entries & some file locations for greater compatibility [& security?], & that can lead to extra registry entries -- normally in a win7 VM I'll install & 1st run an app as admin, then run normally & check the UserName\ AppData\ Local\ VirtualStore folder for new additions, & if I find any I'll run the app as admin if I add it to my regular win7 install.

Again if it helps at all, here's how I test to make sure just what's going to happen when I install & run most any app...
I test most software installs in win7's XP Mode VM, running InstallWatch Pro to monitor installation & 1st run -- that's where it's quickest to get a decent idea of impact, what files/processes the app uses [with Process Explorer], & what the app does or doesn't do. Then as warranted or needed I can do the same thing in a win7 32 bit V/Box VM, where if there's a big difference compared to the XP Mode install, I know to look for compatibility problems. InstallWatch Pro records new & changed files as well as registry entries, but it won't work with win7 64 bit -- there all I can do is monitor the registry with RegShot2. Depending on the app & how much I want it etc. I can then try it out in a win7 64 V/Box VM, or using TimeFreeze, in my regular win7 64 install, monitoring with RegShot2 either way.

Examples: with today's GOTD, monitoring in the XP Mode VM I found that installation/running was no big deal -- I could easily find & delete the added keys using Regedit in less time than it took to re-boot, so I just fired up RegShot2 to be safe, & tested Wondershare Photo Recovery in my regular win7 64 install. OTOH Mamutu was a bit more involved, so I tested in XP Mode & win7 32 VMs before starting TimeFreeze & testing in my regular win7 64. If installation had been more involved &/or required a re-boot I would have used the win7 64 VM.

I keep 3 copies of the virtual disks my VMs use, e.g. in a backup folder I have win7_32.vd_ , win7_32.vdi, & in the V/Box hard disk folder win7_32.vdi... When I update the VM [e.g. update Tuesday], I'll delete win7_32.vd_, rename win7_32.vdi (in the backup folder) to win7_32.vd_, & copy the just updated win7_32.vdi into the backup folder. Then after a test, I'll copy that backup, win7_32.vdi over the one I just modified, putting it back the way it was. The reason for the older, .vd_ copy is in case I find something in the update didn't work, &/or in case there's an error copying the .vdi files -- I've had errors happen maybe 1% of the time, where the .vdi virtual disk was damaged. The XP Mode VM works exactly the same way, except there are 3 files to backup or copy.

Note that if or once you start monitoring this stuff [before & after snapshots with RegShot2 in win7 64 don't take long at all] you'll start to see the same sort of entries over & over for things like caches -- those caches behave like most caches, deleting entries to make room when/as needed, so not a cause for worry.

If you’re a Windows watcher, circle this date on your calendar: April 10, 2012. *
That’s the date when mainstream support for Windows Vista officially ends. And it cannot come soon enough for Microsoft, whose public image was badly damaged by the massively unliked Vista. If the rumors about a possible Windows 8 release in April 2012 are true, it will be an almost perfect changing of the guard.

Khai can you Read 16/32 is %100 ok no ‘millions’ of Registry entries? not on 16/32 bit
Take the link & Read
http://windowssecrets.com/top-story/bugs-and-lack-of-apps-plague-64-bit-users/

To be sure, many 32-bit applications that were not written specifically to run on Vista-64 will in fact run on that OS. Microsoft maintains a listing of applications and hardware that are “compatible” with Vista, including 64-bit Vista. This listing consists primarily of 32-bit programs that Vista-64 runs in a 32-bit window.

Did you say ‘millions’ of Registry entries?

Another glitch Heiker continues to confront is a real doozy: with no explanation in sight, his 64-bit Vista PC has accumulated some 23 million Registry entries. No, that’s not a typo — 23 million.

“I brought this to Microsoft’s attention and there’s no solution to it,” he said. “Apparently, a Registry entry is made each time a 32-bit application tries to update the Vista-64 Registry … duplicating Registry entries a huge number of times.”

Yes I know it vista just saying that it best to run 64-bit if you can get it & it geting better all the time 64-bit came out in XP

meaningless. you know why? we're in the 32bit to 64bit change over. just like the 16bit to 32bit and the 8bit to the 16bit before that...

still early days. hell the 16/32 change over is still going on in some industries!
