Since Snow Leopard’s release, a few users have reported a scary data loss incident related to using the Guest account. Basically, after upgrading to Snow Leopard with an existing Guest account in Leopard, these users logged into their Guest accounts, then back into their normal accounts, only to find all of their data gone—none of their files were there,
all preferences were reset, and all programs acted like they were being launched for the first time ever.

I think it got me earlier today. I was taking a nap and woke up to see my computer caught in endless set of loops. It looked as if it was trying to access a program, but

was being denied or it was closing a program and it was being denied. It was strange.
It kept popping up some sort of failed to execute or access,

I was just waking up so was still foggy. I quickly hit control-alt-delete, but that didn't work so yank the power and rebooted.

No virus after several scans- I guess I was invaded. bastar@#@#

The strange thing is lots of shortcuts are missing, at least half, so half my programs arent showing although they there and working, except system mechanic.
It took out system mechanic for what ever reason.

I just thought of why I might be able to reset with iolos, I couldnt do it with windows.

Thanks for the post hotdoge

This is by far the the most useful one yet, guess cause it it affect me real time.lol
Thanks any though txnnok

Terri218,

With all the technology getting a boost the hackers get a boost too. The programmers machines on the dark side on running faster and excuting code quicker.

They infiltrate all of computers and just sit till needed and create a bot net. Which is millions of computers working at the same time. Which is way faster than than any super computer, not to mention that they can flood any server with request and shut it down.

Those guys guys are getting faster and smarter and some work as teams.
+ imagine group after group of these popping week after. Or if just 10 guys took or 30 computers a week.

Hotdoge could probably find the real stats and I bet they are way way higher, even with good guys fixing computers and people fixing their own.

zero-day vulnerability affecting Windows 7 and Vista.

The flaw in Windows 7 could allow an attack which would cause a critical system error, or "blue screen of death," according to researcher Laurent Gaffie.

Gaffie wrote in his blog that the flaw lies in a Server Message Block 2 (SMB2) driver.

The best that users can hope for is a 1 hour and 24 minute,
The medium user profile, for example, assumed 70GB of data and 20 applications; the super user profile, on the other hand, contained 650GB of data and 40 applications.

Clean installs, on the other hand, were much faster

the 20 hours quoted was for a system with a HUGE amount of data and represented the 'worst' case for doing that kind of upgrade... tho the journo that wrote the article did'nt point that out.

My personal favorites calendar is 30 Boxes and Calgoo Calendar. 30 Boxes is a quick website that is clean and is simply a bookmark on my page (Can remind by email, and grab birthdays from facebook). Calgoo is an actual app that can remind me to do stuff, AND it can grab everything that is on my 30 Boxes and/or Google Calendar automatically

OK, I downloaded and installed Sunbird. I imported my calendar from Windows Calendar.

Now - how do I get it to remind me without me explicitly opening up the calendar? Windows Calendar used to just Ping! pop up with a reminder of the event without me explicitly opening up the app. Now it won't do that and Sunbird didn't either!

Evernote isn't a calendar; it's a note taking program. Some would no longer consider it freeware, but adware, since there is a prominently displayed and uncloseable ad box in the "free" version.

Mozilla Sunbird (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/) is true freeware and EssentialPIM (http://www.essentialpim.com/) has both paid and free versions. Both are good, full-featured calendar programs.

Dragon did you ever try evernote ?
It's not just a calendar, it organises everything and even some more and it is free now.
It's too oversized for my life as retiree so I gave it up and can't give you more tips on it. In former times I used it when it still was a rather new programme.
But I know that a lot of GOTD users were very excited the day we got it for free and will certainly give you some advice when you are interested.

Thanks for the idea, Terri but that's not a good solution for me. I want something that is stand-alone and does NOT rely on the internet. Comcast is not always the most stable ISP!

I've been using Windows Calendar to let me know of such things as my scheduled Chats on my main board as well as birthdays and anniversaries. However, all of a sudden, the reminders have quit and I can't find out why! I'm working with Microsoft on the problem but so far, no luck.

I'm beginning to wonder if I need to switch to another product but I have no idea what. I don't like to just search randomly for a product because so many sites are not safe. This groups seems to know just what is reputable and what isn't. Can you tell me where I can find a GOOD replacement that is also free?

i have had a similar problem and the solution for me was to go to control panel-- system-- restore tag--and then turn off the monitoring of my extra hard drives so restore was only monitoring my main c drive then system restore works and go back and turn on monitoring for the extra drives

hope this helps

Check out Erunt. It's a little utility that will make a complete backup of your registry, every day at system start up and keeps a defined number of backups. If ever issues occur, it will let you go back to an earlier date. It's real easy to use.

Increasing the space in %-values in the monitored drives 'settings' tab might solve the problem.
But ,some software installations may interfere with the files system restore relies upon also.

It seems like every time system restore doesn't respond or hangs ,its SRP's are deleted.

Quote:
You run out of disk space on the system drive or on any one of the available non-system drives, and System Restore stops responding and stops monitoring your system.

This behavior causes the system to delete all restore points in an attempt to free up disk space. However, you have probably already received a warning about running low in disk space prior to this point. In this case, when sufficient disk space is freed, System Restore starts to monitor the system again. At this point, it creates an automatic System Checkpoint.

Note If you have a multiple-partition computer with a drive that has almost no free space, this drive may cause System Restore to stop responding all across the system and to delete restore points. However, this only occurs if you have reached the minimum disk space that is allowed and if you perform operations on monitored file types. Examples of such operations are upgrading, uninstalling or installing programs, moving, and deleting or renaming files. If your drive has almost no free space but you only perform operations on non-monitored files, System Restore does not stop responding
Unquote

BTW SRP's are set to be deleted after 90 days.
