I use Firefox as my default browser, and I can't remember having any problems downloading and activating from the mirror link.

Firefox works just fine for me... but if IE works for you, that's fantastic.

As long as you get the download, I suppose it doesn't matter which browser works for you.

I just downloaded ARDP from Wikifortio using Firefox without any issues.

use IE as your browser instead.

yeah, after i posted my prob here, i immediately tried IE7 to find out if i'll be having the same prob.

conclusion:
wikifortio doesn't work with firefox. even the mirror link.

when GOTD leads you to wikifortio, use IE as your browser.

That also happens to me with Firefox. I don't like that wikifortio download site... it's a pain in the ass.

You have two options...

1) Install the IE Tab extension in Firefox, and open the giveaway of the day in the IE Tab and then click download.

2) Use the alternate (Mirror) link to download the file.

whenever the GOTD leads me to wikifortio, i cannot download the program. when i search the link directly to wikifortio main page, it says that "file not found or has already expired." how did that happen?? it's suppose to be the GIVEAWAY OF THE DAY right?

by the way, i'm using mozilla firefox as my default browser.

So the servers that users download the daily giveaways from are hosted by wikifortio.com

Its just a hosting site for files/software downloads but only for a short while. They have a very simply interface for uploading your files and retrieving them.

er, just one question: who is WikiFortio? I've never heard of such a website until now...

As with any new software, some programs you can just use straight away without any difficulty - others you have to "learn", maybe read some doco, and just spend some time "getting used to it".

Aston is obviously one of the latter. But you are not alone - most users actually expect that they should be able to install some new software and be fairly competent at using it straight away. Whether that is a flaw in the design of the software, or the expectations of the user.... That's one can of worms, I'm not about to open... :)

To be absolutely fair, Bubby - I've just used CCleaner and it downloaded fine - and Aston worked fine too - but I immediately went back to Vista's desktop as while it is certainly great, Aston is confusing and hunting down where basic things now are is irritating (as is the bunching together icons in one lump and not being able to grid-arrange them)

I have also seen these error messages on wikifortio. When that happens - I just use the mirror site. If I still get problems - I use the contact form on the main page, to let the GOTD team know so they can fix it.

or install a handy free program called CCleaner (crap cleaner) which can clean these files (and more) from your computer. Very easy and convenient to use.

If your using IE7 click on "Tools" then its the first option. Then select all and it will remove everything. Give it a try and let us know.

If you are using another browser post what type you use because there are many knowledgeable people here using just about every type of browser out there and we will give you hand. Keilron is correct if your using IE6 or lower.

emptykiss, depends on what browser you have, but it's usually inside the options; What you're looking for is either something like "Delete temporary internet files" or "Delete cache".

i'm having a problem downloading from wikifortio. when the GAOTD was linked to wikifortio, after i click the "download" button, nothing happens. it indicates on the site's status bar that its loading... done, but nothing really happens. redundant situation everytime i download from wikifortio.

could anyone please help me....

I have to agree with Face and Jucati, it would have been nice for GGotD to post a friendly note on the front page or a mention in their Project Team’s blog about the change in download procedure.

I came here to forums because for the last week or so I thought the links for the mirror page vs. direct download were reversed by mistake. I’ve been clicking “mirror link#1” which gave me the zip file to download. I too was put off by the mirror site. For me the reason is the poor English. I questioned the validity and security of the site even without alerts popping up. On wikifortio there is merely an excerpt from the game description given on the main page of Game Giveaway of the Day.

Perhaps because of their contract, those game descriptions seem to come directly from the developers without editing. For some reason things like this bother me. I do understand that English may nor be the native language of wikifortio or many of the game developers. I also believe minor improvements such as a human proofreader for context (not just spell check) could improve their business. The same could be said for GGotD who puts the same descriptions on their main page. Perhaps none of this has occurred to GGotD, the game developers or wikifortio although I have seen spelling and grammar mentioned many times in the comments. Perhaps the expense is too great. I intend this only as a suggestion to a company for whom I have developed quite a fondness. I certainly wish them success.

But I digress. Let me get this straight because I don’t really understand the purpose of mirror sites. GGotD prefers we download the games from another company, wikifortio?

Did filekicker have a download page, or was it just a link to the file? I think it was the latter, and that's why I didn't notice/care.

and also, download pages increase the number of clicks. I know, I know, one extra click for some free software - plus the added minigame of finding the *actual* download link - yes, yes, I just use the mirror links.

Were you as concerned when the files were hosted using the service http://filekicker.com ?

http://wikifortio.com/ is now providing the same service.

In both cases you are "getting" the same files that are uploaded by the GOTD Team.

If you feel "safer" - the same files are available from the mirror link.

As long as at least one of the two links work - I'm happy.

I can only speak for myself here, but I like for things that say "download here" to be links to files. If there was some kind of notice that clicking the links will take you to a download page, it might be a little less... disagreeable? I dunno.

I think the fact that I'd not heard of wikifortio before also doesn't help. I recognize names like CNet and Sourceforge, so I understand what I'm getting at a place like that.

I still cannot understand the idea people have that whatever they submit, should appear on the site - if it doesn't appear then it is some coverup.

If you write a letter to the editor of a newspaper - if it isn't on a relevant topic it is published. If it is too long - it gets edited. If 20 other people have written letters on the same thing - they might only publish the best one.

At any rate, everyone is told to only comment specifically on the software. Technical problems or issues with the site belong in the forums. Yet people insist on writing comments - so instead of talking about the software we end up with a discussion on something that happenned last week, or website security.

Post it in the correct area and it will not be "deleted".

And before you point out other comments that are not about the software - they may have slipped through or overlooked. But don't complain that the rules were correctly applied to your post. There are many posts that don't appear on the site because people cannot follow guidelines, or are abusive - of course most people assume that they have been singled out - which is not the case.
