May 21, 2008 — Computerworld — Microsoft Corp. confirmed on Wednesday that it delayed the rollout of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) because changes to the operating system can corrupt data in the company's retail point-of-sale and store management software.

The company has also suspended automatic distribution of Windows Vista Service Pack 1. "Yes, we are temporarily holding any additional automatic distribution of Windows Vista SP1," said a spokeswoman for Microsoft. hope sp3 for Vista is better than XP sp3

Yes, all of the software offered here runs on Windows.

There was talk of a mac giveaway section, but it seems that what software there is, there was insufficient interest from the developers to make it worthwhile.

The GOTD team was keen to give it a shot. The Mac development community was not.

I just ran a cross this tip and decided to pass it along.

1 Disable UAC, If you have not done that See Here

3 Make sure that you are in an administrator account (otherwise this will not work.)

3 Click the Start button, type regedit into the Search box, then press Enter to launch the Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

4 Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM

5 Change the values of the entry Composition to 1 and the value of CompositionPolicy to 0 (In some cases this will not work so change CompositionPolicy to 2)

6 Close Registry Editor.

7 That’s all, Reboot and Enjoy.

Note: The author of this tip mentioned that this might not work for you if are you have SP1 installed. So far he has not tried it with SP1 he knows it works pre SP1.

Pinhead
This may be the answer to your problem, took this from the comments page,a reply from BuBBy( the administrator).

"Just to mention to the people pointing out that the software isn’t working under Vista - note in the product system requirements:

System Requirements: Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server (The developers site mentions Vista. Was it excluded here for a reason?)

Clearly the software isn’t yet 100% compatible with Vista. This is not a “problem” (or a bug) the software is obviously still being written. with the software (just going by the current System Requirements), and obviously the current incompatibility is known by the developers, if they are still referring to “improvements” for Vista in release notes etc.

Quite possibly an entirely separate version for Vista may need to be written, possibly due to Vistas different interface and graphics model. At any point at the least the software does appear to still need some work for use on Vista.

Finally perhaps the comment in the release notes is holding out for some “empty hope”.
“Improved the compatibility with Windows Vista” - doesn’t mean much at all. It is only saying it’s better now than what it was. It still might be nowhere near working… but knowing that “it’s coming” might “spur on a few extra sales” in the hope it will work “soon”. (gosh I’m a cynic)."

Edit, sorry BuBBy did not mean to step on your toes,Did not see your last post.

There are at least two work arounds in the comments

Works with Vista Home Premium - you only have to change your Desktop theme from Vista to Windows Classic. Right-click on your desktop and choose ‘Personalize…’

I found that if you drop down to 16 bit from 32, it will work. Give it a try.

Welcome. :)

The Office/Vista promotion was closed almost as soon as it opened - Microsoft claimed they had "run out of stock".

(But hey, they are Microsoft! Can't they just run off another 10,000 copies?)

I think as they are running a type of survey, they had all the participants they need. I'm not sure, but I think you can still sign up for their snooping survey - you just don't receive anything (apart from a warm feeling, knowing you are helping Microsoft)

In terms of any Acrobat 8 promo - I've never seen one.

64bit hmmm... is it everything you hoped for?

It's unlikely 64bit software will be offered in the near future - basically everyone is running 32bit - except for the few who actually enjoy hunting around for 64bit versions of software and drivers. ;)

But you can still run almost all of the 32bit software (so everyone is happy). If GOTD starts to put up 64bit software - you will know about it, because everyone will start screaming that it won't install. :P

64bit suffers from the chicken and egg problem. Nobody wants to run 64bit because the software there is no "64bit only" software that they need - and on the flipside developers themselves only run 32bit and only release 32bit software because "nobody" runs 64bit. This will change "one day".

Microsoft says,

"If you use only 32-bit applications and work with data sets that are no larger than 2 GB, you will find that 32-bit Windows XP Professional offers sufficient power for your applications."

Until developers start putting out more 64bit software, I suspect people will just sit on 32bit.

Today, I installed Windows Pro 64 on my machine (Because I haven't heard anything good about Vista). Anyway, when I did that, I had to also update drivers for everything and I had a bitch of a time finding them. Plus, I had to try and find programs that were compatible with a 64 bit system. Also a bitch to find. When I looked on this website in hopes of finding something-anything that could handle 64 bit, I found nothing. And from what I've seen, many of the programs you give away are for a 32 bit system. I think its cool what you guys are doing with giving these programs and games away, but isn't the future of computers heading towards the 64 bit systems? Or am I just hallucinating. Anyway, if you ever do offer a 64 bit program, game, antivirus, or whatever... can you state that its for a 64 bit system?

I have Vista and normally don't have any problems with software that's compatible, or that will run in the compatibility mode, but this game did the same thing to me that it's doing to you and to others. The screen goes black, the game is non-responsive, and I have to go to the task manager to get out of the black screen.

When I tried to install this game on my daughter's Vista computer, I got an error message, which was shortly followed by another box that told me it might not have been installed correctly, so what did I want to do? I clicked on reinstall, and it prompted me for where I wanted to save the file to, which is further than I got before, so I took that as a good sign. But after it was done, when I double clicked on ict.exe , the screen went black and stayed that way. I did alt-cntl-delete and saw that the program was not responding. I uninstalled it, redownloaded it (from the main link - not one of the mirrors), and installed it again. This time the installation showed no errors, but when I tried to bring the game up, the screen turned black, flashed a few times, and then stayed black. I never even got as far as Vista asking my permission, which I assume it needs to do - it seems to do that constantly. I did alt-cntl-delete again, and again, it said Ice Cream Tycoon was not responding. Just out of curiosity, I installed it on my XP computer, and it works fine.

So, I know that it's not the game's fault - it's something I'm not doing right - but I am totally clueless.

Any ideas? Thank you!

Since minimized applications are shrunk to the desktop, this needs an UNCLUTTERED desktop. It also favours being able to spare some screen space, to seperate the active application(s) from the parked previews

Hi Bobby,

The link for Madotate you provided does not seem to work. I was able to google it and got version 2.02.02

Do you know if this is the latest English version?

Thanks,

Thought there might be someone here that would enjoy a program that allows older Windows versions to look more like Vista, with the ability to manipulate windows in 3D instead of 2D. The program name is Madotate, and it is located on SoftLookUp.com
http://www.softlookup.com/display.asp?ID=26041

**
Klipfolio is a highly customizeable desktop sidebar ... far more useful than other sidebars I've seen, including Talisman. You can check it out here:

***
Both programs are freeware! If you want to learn more about them, the reviews can be found here:

Hi everyone,

I really enjoy GOTD and GGOTD and I want to give back to the community. I created two free Vista Sidebar gadets (one for GOTD and the other for Game GOTD). They both allow the user to see what the current giveaway of the day is. The text is small when it is docked, but it will show at 100% when undocked. Clicking the picture (docked or undocked) will send you directly to the GOTD or GGOTD websites.

You can pick up the GGOTD vista sidebar gadget at:

and the GOTD gadget at:
