hi, hotdoge3...

fortunately, my pc is not set to download & install updates automatically...for a while now, i've waited to see if there are any problems reported with the patches before installing............either way, a risk...lol...

MS ended up pulling one of the updates...if i understand correctly, some type of malware infection already on the pc will cause the BSOD if the patch is applied?...

i only read one article:

Microsoft to fix 26 vulnerabilities on patch day

There will be no further updates for Windows 2000 after 13th July 2010 and Windows XP Service Pack 2 will also cease to be supported after this date. SP2 users are advised to update to SP3. Windows Vista RTM will be supported until 13th April 2010 only, Vista SP1 until 12th July 2011.

http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/Microsoft-confirms-new-vulnerability-in-Internet-Explorer-922111.html

All versions of Internet Explorer from 5.01 to 8 on all supported Windows platforms are reportedly affected. Windows XP Home users, however, appear to be unaffected by the problem, as XP Home does not include a hidden C$ administrative share for websites to access.
The crux of the problem is that security zone settings in Internet Explorer do not always bite if a path is entered in the browser in UNC (Uniform Naming Convention) format (e.g. file://127.0.0.1/C$/.../index.dat). This means that under specific conditions JavaScript from the Internet Zone can access (and render) local files, despite the zone model being intended to prevent this.

http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/Internet-Explorer-still-a-problem-child-916160.html

Microsoft has merely patched things up without addressing the actual core problem. There are other routes for getting around the zone model however. According to Medina, these routes are very hard to block, since they relate to fundamental functions of the browser designed to enable it to work seamlessly with other applications.

To All: Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate the help.
As for OpenGL, I searched for it and found 2 instances of it that
apply to this problem. One seems to belong to Kingsmania the other
to Beaking. Both of these games wouldn't work, but yet the OpenGL
seems to have loaded with the game.
They are:

opengl2d3d.dll C:\Games\kingmania
opengl2d3d.dll C:\users\buskieboy\Desktop\beaking

Interestingly I find no OpenGL for the other games, which I haven't
uninstalled (yet) as the free time had expired and I can't reactivate them.

Would the opengl issue pertain to the application (exe) file errors:
"kingmania has stopped working" after it actually did nothing anyway?

I am running a HP Pavilion Laptop with 32bit Vista, 1.5ghz, 2GB RAM.

Thanks,

Hey GM, Stephen's probably been too busy too respond or didn't see you post. Here's the OpenGL download link that he posted in the first recent Rake In The Grass game, Archibald's Adventures:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/windows/18800

Buskie, from the discussion we've had with all these "Rake" games, I'm willing to bet Whiterabbit's right. He usually is, though he gets embarrassed when we say so. :) Although Wizzard is right, too, but the OpenGL seems to sense the resolution properly, so that you don't have to guess what to have your screen size set to when you try to open these games, like you seem to have to do when you're using DirectX/Direct3D with these games. Most of these games you're having trouble with, however, appear to be using 1024x768. If you don't change to OpenGL, you might want to try that, if you haven't already. Good luck.

@Whiterabbit-uk: I don't think OpenGL is "downloadable", are they? I think they are all included in the graphic card's drivers. I've tried to find a standalone OpenGL download in the past but never managed to. The closest I came was a package for Windows 4.x.

All those games use OpenGL as the main 3D graphics program. The games always start with the OpenGL as default, not Direct X. You may need to download OpenGL then the problem may be fixed. (I hope)

Sounds like it may also be a screen resolution problem. Try changing your screen resolution and then start the game. I know that was a somewhat common problem with past game giveaways. It may be a pain in the butt, but you may have to change the resolution each time to play it.

I just installed styrateg after reading your post on W7 64bit, didnt have any issues and played it for about 20 minutes.

I would think you have a some software blocking installs or taking away key components either after its downloaded. Also I believe that it does have be activated before it will work, so always run the setup as an admin just in case.

--------------------------------------
Do this. uninstall todays game and delete the zip or rar from the download. then turn off all protection, firwall, antivirus, adware protection and install the game again.

Turn make sure the gamne works and then turn back on program and run a scan.then run the game again. If the works then that wasnt the program causing the problem.

If this doesnt work, then tell what kind system you have and do you meet the minimum specs. Windows 98/2000/XP; PC 500Mhz; 128 MB RAM; 3D Video Card

The last few games I've downloaded, Styrateg, Troll, AlienTerminatorDeluxe, Gregory_Phoenix, have issues when I try to start them.
I either get "Display failed to load" or the exe simply does nothing.

Wasting my time downloading these games that don't work is getting boring.
I noticed the problem downloads are for highly graphical games.
If I try Rake in The Grass' help email it comes back undeliverable. Nice.
I realize it's free, but how about helping with the initial set up etc.
Can rate or comment on usable software.
Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening?

Since Snow Leopard’s release, a few users have reported a scary data loss incident related to using the Guest account. Basically, after upgrading to Snow Leopard with an existing Guest account in Leopard, these users logged into their Guest accounts, then back into their normal accounts, only to find all of their data gone—none of their files were there,
all preferences were reset, and all programs acted like they were being launched for the first time ever.

I think it got me earlier today. I was taking a nap and woke up to see my computer caught in endless set of loops. It looked as if it was trying to access a program, but

was being denied or it was closing a program and it was being denied. It was strange.
It kept popping up some sort of failed to execute or access,

I was just waking up so was still foggy. I quickly hit control-alt-delete, but that didn't work so yank the power and rebooted.

No virus after several scans- I guess I was invaded. bastar@#@#

The strange thing is lots of shortcuts are missing, at least half, so half my programs arent showing although they there and working, except system mechanic.
It took out system mechanic for what ever reason.

I just thought of why I might be able to reset with iolos, I couldnt do it with windows.

Thanks for the post hotdoge

This is by far the the most useful one yet, guess cause it it affect me real time.lol
Thanks any though txnnok

Terri218,

With all the technology getting a boost the hackers get a boost too. The programmers machines on the dark side on running faster and excuting code quicker.

They infiltrate all of computers and just sit till needed and create a bot net. Which is millions of computers working at the same time. Which is way faster than than any super computer, not to mention that they can flood any server with request and shut it down.

Those guys guys are getting faster and smarter and some work as teams.
+ imagine group after group of these popping week after. Or if just 10 guys took or 30 computers a week.

Hotdoge could probably find the real stats and I bet they are way way higher, even with good guys fixing computers and people fixing their own.

zero-day vulnerability affecting Windows 7 and Vista.

The flaw in Windows 7 could allow an attack which would cause a critical system error, or "blue screen of death," according to researcher Laurent Gaffie.

Gaffie wrote in his blog that the flaw lies in a Server Message Block 2 (SMB2) driver.

"SRV2.SYS fails

well he did said on it's 650GB of data that is big my 3.1 hard-disk is only 40 MB
The best that users can hope for is a 1 hour and 24 minute,
The medium user profile, for example, assumed 70GB of data and 20 applications; the super user profile, on the other hand, contained 650GB of data and 40 applications.

Clean installs, on the other hand, were much faster

you'll find that article was 'cherry picked' for the sensational aspect.

the 20 hours quoted was for a system with a HUGE amount of data and represented the 'worst' case for doing that kind of upgrade... tho the journo that wrote the article did'nt point that out.
