http://techcrunch.com/2011/04/22/google-responds-to-smartphone-location-tracking-uproar-says-android-is-opt-in/

Then, last night the Wall Street Journal published an article with a new revelation: Apple and Google (with its Android devices) are both sending some location data from these devices back to their home servers. That sounds pretty sinister, but as a long-time Android user it didn’t ring true to me — I vividly remembered a checkbox that asked if I wanted to allow Google to collect anonymized data, which means it isn’t really a secret, and you can opt-out of it. Unsurprisingly, Google confirms that this is indeed the case.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703983704576277101723453610.html?mod=WSJ_Tech_LEADSecond

HTC Android phone collected its location every few seconds and transmitted the data to Google at least several times an hour. It also transmitted the name, location and signal strength of any nearby Wi-Fi networks, as well as a unique phone identifier.
Apple didn't respond to requests for comment.

Q-and-A: Smartphone location tracking
Q: What can I do to prevent this information from being collected?
A: Fortunately, it's easy to turn off the tracking capability through the settings menus. The same goes for phones built on Google Inc.'s Android operating software. Unfortunately, doing so cripples a lot of applications that make smartphones "smart" in the first place, such as maps and the Foursquare social media service. Turning off tracking means those applications won't have access to your GPS locations either, making them useless.

LONDON: iPhone users beware! Make sure you've got nothing to hide, or your phone might reveal your secret flings.
It has emerged that iPhones have an 'infidelity app' that can secretly keep track of love cheats and could be viewed by a jealous spouse.
Two British software developers recently exposed that the Apple iphone saves the user's locations and movements, along with a time and date stamp, and stores them in a file.
It then copies the data to the owner's computer whenever the two are synchronised.
"Apple has made it possible for almost anybody - a jealous spouse, a private detective - with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you've been

http://www.wfmz.com/berksnews/27644165/detail.html

"I just started poking through the iPhone's back up in my laptop and I stumbled across the file,"
But some say tracking consumers is a sign of the times.
"You look at Facebook, it's tracking everything from consumer likes to who your friends are. So I'm not surprised at all," said Raymond from Reading.

The most talked-about feature of Apple's iPhones and iPads these days isn't a clever new software application. It's a hidden digital record on every device of the locations where it has been used — a numerical travelogue that effectively traces its owner's movements by noting the times and places it has been used.
The "consolidated.db" file has been discussed by security researchers for months, but it didn't receive widespread attention until the O'Reilly Radar technology blog published an expose April 20. Within a day, two members of Congress had dashed off letters to Apple demanding more information, including an explanation of why the data were being collected and stored in unencrypted form. And now several European countries are launching their own investigations.
Apple has remained mum.

record of every place you've been, or, at least, every place your phone's been. That data is stored in a file on your phone, unencrypted. Shock!

I would like to know what Google and Apple are doing with the tracking data from our phones. It can't be anything good.

Tools wipe location data from (some) iPhones. !!
Another tool, Location Blocker, goes further and wipes all historical data from the consolidated.db file and also blocks the device from storing any further cell and Wi-Fi location data. Step-by-step instructions for installing it are here.

Mozilla outs automatic browser audio and video recording
The Rainbow add-on generates files for video and audio data in either Theora or Vorbis formats respectively, storing them in an Ogg container. The files are accessible through the document object model (DOM) via the HTML5 file API, which can then be used to upload the files onto a server.

Mozilla provides sample code to show how simple the whole process is, and coming in at less than 30 lines, it's hard to argue against the outfit's claims.

However, the idea of browsers being able to record audio and video by some simple Javascript commands does lead to privacy concerns. One has to hope that any permissions mechanisms Mozilla and others come up with will be able to successfully prevent any malicious use.

Firefox 4 beta 7 gets much, much faster.

Microsoft Builds Online Tracking Blocking Feature Into IE9
The new feature will let users easily keep lists of websites that track what they do online, and block any site from logging their web activity, the company announced Tuesday.
The new feature, called “Tracking Protection,” will be bundled into IE9’s next beta release early next year, and is intended to give users control over what widgets and scripts display — and pull in data — when they visit a given website.

Online tracking firm Quantcast has agreed to pay $2.4 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it secretly used Adobe’s ubiquitous Flash plug-in to re-create tracking cookies after users deleted them, the company said Saturday.
More than $1 million of the settlement will go to fund privacy groups chosen by the plaintiffs, and 25% will go to the lawyers who filed the suit. It’s unlikely that any money will go to the class, since it essentially includes every internet user in the U.S.
“zombie cookies,” since unique ids handed out by Quantcast would return in a user’s browser even after deleting the company’s cookie. Quantcast is used by thousands of sites to measure the number of unique visitors and to get information on the kinds of people visiting their site — athletic, older, interested in food, etc.
The company’s clients include of the net’s biggest websites including ESPN, Hulu and MTV.com.

Those who are looking to have more control over their cookies in all forms can find some help in two add-ons for Firefox: BetterPrivacy and Abine.

Anyway if you are happy you have fixed your spyware problem on your PC, I'll close this.

Point is the cookie will keep coming back until you get rid of the additional baggage spyware/toolbar/add-on that is putting the cookie up.

If I turn off absolutely all spyware protection, ad filtering, and disable all add-ons - I still cannot get that cookie to appear when surfing around this site. Which leads me to the conclusion your PC has something "special" about it that nobody else's does.

In terms of what software I am (normally) running - AdAware Plus, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, Spyware Terminator, AdMuncher, and NOD32. I've got lots of other stuff that I use when needed, but these are the products running 24x7.

so perhpas you are right.
or perhaps it does come from this site,
hard to tell, as it is the only place i've visited!

i own several websites, and i don;t spy on any of the people that visit them.

OK. I suggest you remove the cookies completely. Then open ONLY one of your "several websites". If the cookie re-appears, you can "take it up with yourself". :)

Hope that helps.

gents...
mah bad?
hard to tell, i have visited GAOTD twice now with no ill effect since blocking that cookie.
of note, looking thru firewall logs, it appears it may be part of that MS "genuine advantage " crap phoning home and spying...<sigh>
regardless, thanks for the time...
i do really dig the site man,
;)
that's why i asked.
thank you , sense...

hmmmmmmm....let's see.
i DID in fact block it in internet options, be interesting to see if it turns up again here.
further;
every time i've gone to GAOTD i have been requested to save a cookie from 66.__.__.--
i haven;t bothered to allow it with no ill effect.
i'll have to run a scan...btw, what do you consider "decent" malware scanners?
;)
i have many to choose from, i bet including whatever YOUR favorite is.
;)
generally i don;t have much of a prob with spyware...which was why i found it rather surprising to keep getting hit with this thing after visiting your site..
not even saying it is this site's fault...hence the question, wt is up widdat? in my original query.
got adaware running at the moment, see if i find it again.
i wouldn't care if not for it's persistence; i don't like things "backdooring" my machine under any circumstance, and generally things that return after a throurough scrubbing of caches and a reboot make me wonder...sorry to have given you offense, as that seems to be how it was taken.
sure enough;
it's back!!!!!!
i just physically DELETED every reference to it in my machine, again before going online and coming here.
from what i've gleaned from google, it's a company that keeps track of banner advertisements.
it lists as a dataminer.
and it definitely screws up the pc's connection.
perhaps i need to take this up with the old ISP instead.
so perhpas you are right.
or perhaps it does come from this site,
hard to tell, as it is the only place i've visited!
i'll get back to ya..
thanks for the feedback and suggestions.
peace

I have just turned on prompting for all cookies - and been to the forums both download sites and to wikifortio and guess what?

Absolutely not even one single request for revsci.net. In fact, after visiting this site several times in the past (who would've guessed) I still don't have a revsci cookie on my PC.

Several other cookies - but nothing else. I think your little problems are yours alone.

Always a good thing to check your facts before throwing around accusations. I suggest you scan your PC with a decent antispyware program. Then visit microsoft.com or google.com and see if they also have your revsci.net spyware. Go bother them - because I cannot replicate your spyware cookie claims on this site.

cookies that track surfing habits and "phone home" are most DEFINITLY "spyware"...
they aren;t being used to identify a computer...they are designed to track people and spy on them.
i own several websites, and i don;t spy on any of the people that visit them.
indeed, most sites that DO track people don;t have long life expectancies when people find out.
big difference between harmless "cookies" and stuff that spys on people.
NOT cool.

as for profanity??
which ??
gimme a break....what, the word crap??
LOL...
sorry bud, no idea what you're complaining about.

that said,
so..............why the spyware all the sudden?
pretty lame, dude.
there is NO REASON to "track" users on the internet other than sleazy folks seeking profit.
and that's it.
so...anything worth saying on the matter this time, mr. moderator?
or just gonna sidestep again?
just curious.
really brings down the quality of your site, IMHO
i mean EVERY SINGLE TIME, and it is [snipped] off.
i remove it with anti malware scanners, physically delete the file, and it's a persistant one...that only shows up while visiting/after visiting this site,
