Filefront has been dying a slow death since the original owners bought back the rights when the last owners were going to shut the site down. download speeds have slowed to a snails pace and they have deleted loads of peoples accounts. I lost all my uploads back in June (over 60 files) and a friend who makes mods and maps for Battlefield 2 last all his maps. They used to give you warning if they were going to delete files, but i was never given any warning about my files. It's a shame, as it was the only decent free gameing download site (okay Gamershell and afew others also have a large database of downloadable mods etc, but nothing like filefront. I do have a suscription to file planet which I was thinkong of not renewing at the end of this year, but now that filefronts service is getting worse, I think i'll keep it open.

Thanks, Wrabbit and Wizzard. Looks like great games.
Sorry, I didn't actually notice the topic that you were going to be away or I would of offered to take over for you but maybe next time.

And is it just me or is the filefront download for Kong really slow (less than 10KB/Sec). I also tested other files and they all seem slow so it must be something to do with filefront itself. But I found an alternative download here:

Thanks for posting yesterday and today Rabbit, and thanks everyone for their well-wishes. I was just about to post this when I saw your post Rabbit, so here is a game of my own!

Kong

Kong is a freeware top-down shooter game featuring monkeys with a thirst for blood in a full 3D environment. The rules are simple, pick up as many health/armor packs and weapons as you can before blowing your enemies into smithereens. The game currently features three game modes including deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture the flag with plans to introduce a number of new game modes. Computer controlled bots are provided as target practise but the real fun comes from playing in multiplayer over a local area network or the internet.

Kong really is a fun little shooter game, and perhaps a game a few of us could attempt to play with each other **GOTD GROUP HINT** lol

Here's some screenshots.

I’ve found a great 3D tanks game called Battle Tanks II, as well as couple of decent puzzle games; a mastermind clone and a remake of Lemmings (called Lemmins – how original, lol). There’s also a reasonable paintball game, that’s better than other free painball games that I’ve come across, though not as good as Extreme Paintbrawl 4 which I bought some years ago.

Battle Tanks II: (16.3Mb)

Sometimes you run across a game that just makes you say "Wow". Battle Tanks II is one of these. The effects, graphics, sound scheme, fluidity of game play, and design of this game is simply astounding.

On the main menu, you choose whether to play a quick game (no setup options) or a normal game where you can choose the landscape, difficulty, aiming method, game stlye, etc. You can also head over to the extensive Options menu to adjust the effects level, sound/music volume, and more.

In the game itself you find stunning physics and effects at incredible speeds. About 90% of the games submitted for the Easter contest ran somewhat slow on my computer at least once but this game is non-stop smooth. Flack, explosions, splashes, rubble, craters, and 20+ enemies all run like there was nothing to it.

Not only are the effects and speed of this game of the same caliber as the legendary Star Wraith series but also the controls. Besides being able to choose which force to be and which of three types of tanks you will operate you can also give 10 different commands to your forces which will automatically carry out your order as you attempt to wipe out the enemy forces.

If you like this game you’ll probably like a game wizard posted back in week 22 called S.U.A.V.E.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paintball Rogue: (4.4Mb)

A great non-violent 3D FPS/Paint Ball game
You were fired from your job because you xeroxed your ass and sent it around as your Boss'. Now you have a huge bill to pay off and you can't find a job. Well, except for a Paintball tournament, where the grand prize is over $5,000 in cash, more than enough to pay everything off. Unfortunately, you can't find any teammates, so you'll have to do it on your own.

controls: (press F6 to toggle between keyboard/mouse)

in keyboard mode:
arrow keys = move, strafe left/right
A / D = turn left / right
W = change weapon
S = change item
Space = jump
Shift = fire
Ctrl = action key (open doors, push crates, etc)
F / C = look up / down
in mouse mode:
move mouse = look
left mouse click = fire
right mouse click = jump

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MasterX: (2.76Mb)

A mastermind clone. I spent hours playing the original game when it first came out. The whole family used to compete against each other when we had a games session (which used to be a Friday and Saturday evenings – ah the memories, lol)

The main goal of the game is guess the combination of the chips. There are two phases of the game process. First is then you make the proposal of the thinking combination by getting and putting the chips on the board in the current row. The current row is bounded by the frame. There are nine rows and you have nine attempts to guess the combination. The second phase is analysis the result. The result are displayed at the right-hand of the row as sequence of the white and black chips. The white chip means that you guess only color but not the position of the one chip. The black chip means that you guess color and position. The white and black chips are displayed in the random order. After analysis the result you repeat phases one and two in the next row until you win or lose.

Register code

You’ll need a registration code for this game. Thankfully you’ll find one provided over at Caiman on the same page as the download link. :)

You can get to the registration screen by clicking Registration button from the Help screen. Note: press F1 for show Help screen.

Download:

http://www.caiman.us/scripts/fw/f300.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lemmins: (4.77Mb)

By Lemmins each level comprises both destructable landscape elements such as rocks, instructable sections such as steel plates, and include numerous obstacles including chasms, high walls, large drops, pools of water or lava, and traps that trigger when a lemming is close. Each level also includes one or more entrance points and one or more exits. The goal is to guide a certain percentage of the green-hair, blue-shirted lemmins from the entrance to the exit by clearing or creating a safe passage through the landscape for the lemmins to use. Unless assigned a special task, each lemmin will walk in one direction ignoring any other lemmin in its way (save for Blockers), falling off any edges and turning around if they hit an obstacle they cannot pass. They die if they fall from a great height, fall into water or lava or off the map, or get caught in a trap; they also die after being assigned the bomber skill.

There are eight skills that can be assigned. Two skills stay with the lemmin regardless of how they are reassigned:

* "Climbers" will climb any vertical surface they hit.

* "Floaters" can safely fall off from heights without injury.

* "Bashers", "Miners", and "Diggers" cause the assigned lemmin to dig across, diagonally downward, or directly downward, respectively, through destructible material until they emerge into open air, hit indestructible material, or are reassigned.

* "Builders" create a rising stairway.

* "Blockers" will reverse the direction of all lemmins that hit them, and cannot be reassigned unless first the ground under their feet is removed.

* "Bombers" will continue whatever they were doing prior to assignment, but after 5 seconds (indicated by a countdown timer above their head) they will stop and explode.

The lemmins are released at a rate predetermined by the level (from 1 to 99), but the player can increase this to a faster rate once they've cleared a path for safe passage to an exit. The player also has the option to "nuke" all the remaining lemmins on the screen, converting them all to Bombers, either to quickly forfeit in order to retry a level or to remove any Blockers that remain after the rest have been rescued.

Controls: Mouse

With all the talk of BF2 above I should have posted a link to the demo of BF2 which gives you a full singleplayer map to play with and in my opinion gives far more playability than WWII Tank commander, although only the 16 player version which doesn't include any jets or helicopters but does include M1A Tank as well as APC's, jeeps, FAV buggies and RIB's (rubber inflatable boat) as well as several classes of soldier to choose from. Though their is a custom patch available that converts the 16 player map to 64 player size which does include choppers and jets as well as an aircraft carrier. You can play online with this demo map in both 16 player and 32 player options as well. The download size is 526Mb, but it really is well worth the bother. :)

http://www.gamershell.com/download_9576.shtml

There are lots of games of this ilk that have vehicles included, but apart from other Battlefield series games none have the breadth of vehicles available.

Try also the Battlefield 1942 demos, which gives you access to tanks. The BF1942 demo is of tobruk. The tanks are still better than WWII TC's tanks despite BF1942 being nearly six years old. I thought there was one for Battlefield vietnam to, but was unable to find a link.

BF1942 Demo (133Mb):

Oy. make my temp file comment way understated, 2 gigs free to have a *chance* to install.

And it did get cheaper- given away again, and most people have faster connections and bigger hard drives this time, which equals less time invested and lower % of hard drive cost, no?

This received 89% of over 400 votes (must have been a weekend) and got 171 comments the first time it was given away, which you can see by following the link below:

http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/wwii-tank-commander/#comments

The downloaded zip file is 321Mb and the installed game will take up 1.03Gb of disc space, which is the largest game we’ve had given away on the game giveaway project so far.

The Game

There’s lots of scope to tweak the game to your particular computers system by going into the options menu, where you can change the graphics, sound, game play and controls. There’s more than your usual arcade game here to adjust, so whether you have an old or a new computer you should hopefully be able to adjust the settings to suit you computer. There’s no help menu, but the game controls are very simple, and self explanatory.

The game is either keyboard and/or mouse controlled. The controls are simple. There are four commands that you will need the keyboard for, unless you have a decent mouse that allows you to map an extra four keys (mine only has an extra two buttons, but that’s better than none)

Each mission is introduced with a short story and mission objectives, then you’re into the thick of the game. I would recommend this game to anyone who doesn’t possess any other games of this type though I personally wouldn’t buy the game. I only downloaded it the first time around just to check it out so that I could review it as I have done today. The game is quite good for the size of the download, but the controls are not very responsive and, as I think The Belgian Dude said, the AI is virtually non existent. Take for example the first mission, within a few seconds of starting you are given the order to fire upon two Panzer tanks to the left. If you stop immediately you can fire on them with impunity as they do not respond to your attacks; though if you get within a certain range they will retaliate. I think I’ll stick to my battlefield games as they are far more realistic and immersive. If you are into tank battles there are loads of custom made maps that have been specifically designed with that in mind. If you are interested just ask and I can give you lists and links to almost any map that BF2 has to offer

There’s no need to ramble on about this one because the Belgian Dude comment #38 and Mike comment #12 posted links (from the previous giveaway; see above link) to a few excellent reviews that are written far better than I could ever manage. You can see these by following the link below:

http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=637594

http://pc.gamezone.com/gamesell/reviews/r24868.htm

http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/924559.asp

Also check out the Googled images of the game below. For some reason my screen capture device (capture wiz pro) wont work when a Merscom game is loaded.:

http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=WWII+Tank+Commander&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2

Conclusion

This is definitely worth the download if you have the time left (for those on dial up. I don’t know what the situation is with respect to those on dial up. If you are, someone suggested using a download manager, which seems a very good idea. As I’ve already said I doubt I’ll be keeping this one as I have much better games that this just doesn’t compare with, though if you don’t have anything like it it’s a must have. Overall I’d give this a 6.5 out of 10 for game play, but that’s trying to be objective. I’d probably score it much lower if I was comparing it to other games with tanks and a 3D world in them. If you have a reasonable connection then you should at least try the game. The boys will probably love it.

Notes

If you’re into tank games or generally anything to do with warfare I would highly recommend Battlefield 2, though there’s a whole plethora of titles to choose from, many of which I have bought. (Crysis and CoD4 are probably the best graphically, but you need a very fast computer (at least a 3Ghz dual core with a high end graphics card just to run it on medium settings) But BF2 is the one I always come back to simply because the game play is easy or as hard as you wish, and there’s an almost never-ending supply of custom made maps and modifications (mod’s) to add to the 10 or so you get with the original game (plus several more from the patches that were released – the latest of which is v1.41 . You can pick up a copy for around the same price that you’d pay for today’s game (if you had to buy it that is) and it’s far more versatile, with an AI, that is relatively good (though the latest games are obviously much better) but is mile ahead of WWII Tank commander.

Check out some tank images from Battlefield 2 most are from my Beta testing so are not the best, but they certainly will give you a good idea as to what the game looks like. They are all in different folders hence the separate links. You are quite welcome to search through the whole of the account as there are hundreds of images posted of Battlefield 2. Just follow the last two links and select the albums to the left of the page. The images in the first of those two links are from my single player review and probably give a better idea as to what the game looks like as most of the ones from the second link are looking for glitches and other faults in the maps that I was testing, though not all of them.

The above images were taken while I beta tested the particular maps or took screen captures for a BF2 review I’ve been working on for quite some time, so aren’t representative of what there actually is, as many modder’s have re-skinned and added more tank models to the game. There’s approaching around 200Gb of extra free content for that game now and despite being nearly 3 years old it still kicks a**.

As I mentioned in the comments section, you can pick up the earlier games in the Battlefield series for even less. I know for certain that Wal-Mart were selling Battlefield Vietnam for $10 and the first set called Battlefield 1941 which includes all the expansion packs for about the same price. Both of these games also have a lot of custom content, more so for the first release, but I have around 200 extra single player maps for Battlefield vietnam alone and there’s twice that many multiplayer maps. Though for Battlefield 2 your talking nearly 1000 singleplayer maps, though there are loads of versions of eachdefsult map, with custom content added, or the time of day changed to give it a different atmospher.

I apologize for going on so. I just think that WWII Tank Commander, though a decent enough game, is really a big rip off as it remains the same price year in year out as most arcade games do, whereas all the big budget games reduce in price significantly, and wen a sequel is released they plummet (eg Battlefield Vietnam that I paid the equivalent of $60 for is now $10) Thankfully it's free today.

In particular check out Bob’s comment # 7 who warns us that this game will crash on start up if you are using a dual monitor screen. Bill50W suggested that you update your video drivers, which is always a good idea, although sometimes the latest ones may still only be in beta form so be sure to back up the older drivers (these are often backed up anyway and can be retrieved by going into the control panel – see the notes at the end of the review for details). Another suggestion you could try, if it crashes, but not necessarily because of a dual monitor is once you’ve activated the game download the game from Alawar’s site rather than using the set up file provided in the zip file:

http://www.alawar.com/games/tank-o-box/

You can also check out the comments made by Alawar customers who paid the full price for this game:

It may take some time to down to download if you are on dial up because the file size is around 45Mb, and 390Mb when installed. (that’s quite a sizeable game, for an old arcade game such as this) but I think it is worth the wait if you like quirky games, which this is in my opinion.

(Quick review (as promised yesterday :) )

Program description: (taken from the Tank o box reead me file found in the games main folder)
The easiest way to learn the game rules is to play the TUTORIAL. At the Main Menu, press Play and choose TUTORIAL.
Remember, you can shoot enemy shells in the air. This becomes indispensable when fighting Pillboxes.
Destroy the Radar as soon as you can. This will help you defend the headquarters much more effectively. You can hear the Radar beeping when it functions. On some levels, enemies use the space detection system, which cannot be destroyed.
Use natural covers such as houses, fences and trees.
If you have a joystick or gamepad, especially one with feedback support, choose CONTROLS in the Main Menu and set it as a control device for player 1 or 2. (although there appears to be none in this version we have been given, if you do have a joystick connected to your computer please try it and let us know if it works) You can guide the tank with the joystick handle or POV-controller, depending on what you find more convenient. Joysticks work with the menu, too.
The shells do not fly too fast. You can easily avoid them, especially if you've picked a Speed bonus.
Don't try to remember the Password; it's better write it down. This will allow you to easily begin from this point the next time you play.
To read the rules and more information about the game see the "Help.html" file which is also found in the games main folder.

This is an excellent game for those few minutes you may find, especially if you are a home body like myself, or those minutes captured at work. The game is quite quirky, playing from an imaginary table, not unlike the concept used with that racing game using little cars.

Once downloaded, installation is easy, with the usual activate module that must be activated first before you install the game. Once the successfully activated window has popped up you can close it then set up the game. Once you’ve agreed to the license restrictions, you will be presented with the set up window. Be sure to select custom set up if you don’t want your game to be installed to the default setting which is :

C:\Program Files\Tank o Box

The custom setting allows you to browse your computer for a suitable location, which if you have multiple discs is very useful. I would recommend installing it to another drive other than the boot drive if you have one, as filling your boot drive can seriously slow down your computer. Watch out for the game box tick box. Deselect it if you don’t want it installed, or for it to run if you do have it installed. (Although it is useful to run it a couple of times a month to see what free game is available)

On starting the game you can select tutorial mode to get used to the controls, I haven’t taken any screen shots today though as I’m really behind in posting this short review as I spent too much time on the driver tutorial below. The tutorial mode gives you unlimited lives so that you can get used to the controls which are keyboard only. I’m sure the version I tried a few years ago had mouse controls, but then again it could be one of several others of this genre. For example Tanks Evolution, which is slightly better, but as this game is free today, I’m not complaining:

http://www.reflexive.com/TanksEvolution.html

You could even try a third person tanks game such as Think Tanks:

http://www.reflexive.com/ThinkTanks.html

WWII Tank Commander (a previous giveaway I think) a first person tank game.

http://www.merscom.biz or http://www.deafgamers.com/05reviews_a/wwii_tc_pc.htm

read a review of WWII Tank commander:

http://www.acegamez.co.uk/reviews_pc/WWII_Tank_Commander_PC.htm

or the Freeware game Cratered although it seems to be unavailable at this time as all the links I tried were dead. I’ll post a link once I find it.

There isn’t the normal save system you get with most games today. You have to note down passwords as you progress through the levels which I find a bit of a bind as I always lose the paper I write the codes down on and have to start from the beginning. Still this is an entertaining game and worth a good 6.5 out of 10. Despite its poor control (if you don’t have a joy stick {which I’ve not checked}), the fact that most of the objects on the playing filed can be destroyed adds to the fun of the game. Also you can play with a friend rather than the computer that does add a little extra to the game. My son has really got into playing two or more player games recently, especially with his friends. (It wasn’t that long ago that he used to like playing these games with me, but I’m too slow and boring as I wont use cheats to win, lol). No doubt spurred on by his Nintendo DS and hopefully his Wii if we can find one that’s not been ridiculously overpriced because of the drought.

There’s two mode arcade which is timed and the extra mode which is basically just a free for all and never ends, lol. There are loads of tanks to knock out on this one so watch out. You’ll find a decent number of power ups to improve your tank throughout the game, but make sure you pick them up before the enemy tanks do, or before they disappear

Do check out my post about Magic Ball 2, especially if you like the game as I posted an offer I’m sure some will enjoy. It was posted early-ish in the day, but as usual, there was no moderator for virtually the whole of the giveaway period, so it never got posted till this morning on the change over. I may stop writing reviews on a weekend because of this as I really can’t see the point of spending so much time writing reviews that aren’t moderated till the next day. I don’t want to do this, but I always start my weekend posts reasonably early, but still usually miss the one and only moderation (I don’t blame the moderators though as I think they are volunteers that don’t get paid) Maybe I’ll still write up those I actually like playing, as I can usually write these off the top of my head and therefore write them much quicker.

Thank you for this repeat Alawar and thank you to the Giveaway team for continuing with the project. If there are any Administrators reading the comments today, would you please read my second comment from yesterday as I’d really appreciate some feedback on the suggestion I’ve made. I’ve asked several times with never any response. Thank you.

Notes:

If you want to update or roll back (to a previous one) your graphics drivers you can do so by following the instructions below. If you are updating your drivers be sure to have the latest drivers that you’ve downloaded from a suitable site such as Driver Guide:

http://www.driverguide.com/

Where you can find the latest drivers for any device you have running on your computer. You do have to register, but it’s free and in the three years that I’ve been using the site I’ve never received one Email from them. Be sure to have your pop up blocker activated when you visit the site though, especially if you detest pop ups. Don’t let that put you off though because the site offers a service that’s only surpassed by Version Tracker, which if you subscribe to, will notify you whenever there is a newer driver for all your computers drivers, and even install them with only a few mouse click needed. There is an annual subscription to Version Tracker of around $30 or more though. I used it for a while and found it excellent value for money; but haven’t bothered to renew my subscription this year as I thought I’d update my own drivers (partly so that I can learn more about servicing etc. I use Driver Guide for almost all of my drivers needs. It’s a little more time consuming than using Version Tracker, but I’ve found the rewards worth it ‘sometimes’.

http://www.versiontracker.com/subscribe/cn0079/

Instructions for updating your drivers:

.

1)	Go to the Start Menu and click on the control panel.
2)	Find and click on performance and maintenance and then the system icon. If you are using the classic view just go straight to the system icon.
3)	Clicking on the System icon brings up a window called System Properties. Select the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button. This brings up the Device Manager Window
4)	Look for and then click on your display adapter entry. Click on whatever display hardware you use. This may be a video card or an on board (motherboard) graphics chip. If there are more than one devices listed it’s usually the first on the list that’s the primary hardware, so click on that one. If you still aren’t sure, go back to the start menu and click on Run. Type dxdiag into the field and then click on OK. This will bring up the DirectX diagnostic window. Click on the display tab and you can then see the name of the display device the computer is using.
5)	Clicking on the display adapter will bring up your display adapters properties window. Click on the Drivers tab and then the update drivers button. This brings up a Hardware update wizard.
6)	Select the choice ‘install from a list or specified location’ then click on Next.
7)	Once in the hardware update wizard, deselect ‘search removable media’ and select ‘click on the Include this location in the search’. At this point you will need to browse for the graphics driver you’ve previously downloaded from Driver Guide
8)	Once you’ve located where you put the downloaded driver, click on next and follow the onscreen prompts. Easy Peasy ;) (you can tell I have kids)

If you want to deselect the latest driver because it doesn’t work (maybe because it’s a beta the latest ones often are{as already mentioned}), or for whatever reason, just follow the steps above to step 5 and then click on Rollback driver and follow the on screen prompts.
