Eggman Hates Furries (21.1Mb)

Here’s a Sonic The Hedgehog fangame by Oddwarg, with great emphasis on boss fights. I’ve mentioned two excellent games of his before, Madness! HERE and Super Sawman HERE.

Sonic has dreamt that Eggman has destroyed him, before waking up to find Tails at work on his bi-plane. Disaster then strikes, and you're propelled right into a high-speed boss battle with a huge machine. This all happens via a narrative with you landing right in the middle of a boss fight as the game proper starts.

The present and fairly recently released game has some platform elements needing wall jumps and spin-dashes, in between numerous boss fights. You have standard Sonic moves, and there’s a gravity effect activated in different directions, fighting some bosses or on parts of the level. Once you have discovered the bosses’ weakness, it’s down to you to exploit them and defeat each boss. Rather than three stages, it’s made up of one long level interspersed with boss fights. In fact the game starts with you thrown at the first boss, as Eggman has obtained the 7 Chaos Emeralds that grant the owner of all these crystals incredible - if not ultimate - power, and you of course are out to stop him!

“Each boss is original and gigantic, as well as intricately detailed and multi-segmented, ranging from Sonic chasing a drilling robot through a freshly dug tunnel that changes shape and angle as the drill progresses, to Sonic falling at lightning speed down an extremely long canal below the surface trying to outrun a tunnel-crawling death ray laser firing monster, wielding four buzz saw arms. There are some great special effects as well.” Oggwarg’s inventiveness and creativity in programming these bosses and their mechanics is nothing short of remarkable!

Controls are easy. ‘Arrow’ keys to move, ‘Spacebar’ to jump and ‘Tab’ key to show the direction of gravity. There are checkpoints along the way and an on-screen tutorial to get you started. I have to say I found the Intro lengthy, tedious and awkward to navigate, without any means to skip it initially, with much the same for the minigame tutorials that start the dream before the game proper. I wasn't amused at having to jump for rings around a circle, perform several or more spin-dashes (performed without a hitch on the first attempt) without an explanation of having to do a spin-dash at the 'exit', nor having to try to find how to exit the run up walls and jump for a hoop screen with gravity direction changes, etc. It would be much improved if there was a skip tutorials option, or at least more info on how to get through the tutorial minigame screens; and a start the game proper option in the main menu without having to complete all of the tutorial screens! The 'F4' key switches between windowed and full-screen mode.

I need to mention something about Sonic’s ingame mechanics here, as Oddwarg has changed these to suit and tweaked them for best gameplay. Sonic runs along whatever surface he comes into contact with. If you jump against a wall Sonic will run sideways up/down the wall. If you hit a ceiling, Sonic will try to land feet first on the ceiling and Sonic automatically spins whenever he is mid air - which is something of a life saver in most battles! This can give rise to problems as for example if you jump and change direction mid-air, Sonic’s very rapid acceleration might make you under-estimate the jump, and combined with ‘slipperyness’ on landing put you in an awkward situation, or land you right on a boss (either not to be recommended!). But you'll soon get used to the controls and adapt to Sonic's movement modes.

The graphics are nothing other than spectacular, and if the (short) platforming parts aren’t as full of action as you might like, the stunning boss fights more than make up for this. You might get blown away by the graphics in the boss fights or, naturally, by the bosses themselves! The music has new tunes as well as music cloned from many popular video games, all seamlessly inter-twined. You might possibly just find some animations/cutscenes/voice-overs a little below par, but overall it’s a super blast, with the boss battles increasing considerably in difficulty - as in getting mega difficult to overcome! And oh those graphics!

The last boss will surprise you and just as you think you’ve got him defeated, there’s a twist that makes the game by no means over! And some good further surprises when you do finally defeat the last boss!

If you are a keen Sonic fan you might find the portrayal of Sonic and Tails inter-actions and inter-relationships a little disturbing, but nothing to freak you out too much! Except maybe for the closing scenes of the game!

It’s a wild, blisteringly fast, intense and furious boss-rush of a game and is very most heartily recommended - provided you've the patience to get through the intro and the tutorials!

A keylogger is a program that reads every key you press. It can be dangerous, because it can record passwords/usernames and send them to somebody who doesn't have your best intentions in mind. However, with games, you are usually really safe, because games need to read the keys you press in order to work.
I am guessing you are getting the error because you have heuristics on Kapersky on. Huristics is a method that tries to discover other types of malware, but also produces a lot of false positives (warnings that really shouldn't be). See if you can turn that off. Finally, if that doesn't work, right click on your icon, open the file location, (basically figure out where it is), and have Kapersky make an exception for this program.
Hope that helps!
EDIT: If none of this works, go and try to update your drivers (graphics card first, as that would be the most likely)

WillGraham, have you gotten any other machines to reproduce the same bug I am getting? Everything worked, except that when I pressed a button, it would move about 2 seconds late. I try to keep everything up to date, but I am assuming that because it is built from the ground up, I wouldn't need to keep anything up to date...besides .net maybe? (Mine is current) Oh--and I am running windows 7.
Thanks!

Hi, WillGraham, welcome to the GOTD forums!
It's always a special event when a developer visits us. I'm sure when the friends of our fabulous games crew come back, they will be pleased about
the honour of your visit. ;)
I had much fun with Igneous, I like the colours, yes, and the drums, and of course the wild race, only my fingers or my brain or both are a bit too slow :P
Thanks for the pleasure and good luck for the coming games.

It really is a great game and surprisingly good graphics for a free/student made game.

Graylox, I love bass myself...it helps to fully immerse myself in the atmosphere of the game/movie. However, this game was a little too much bass for me. Maybe if there were a little more music involved it would have been better. I encourage more people to give this one a go.

tnip, did you try changing some of the graphics details in the options menu? If you hit the escape button, you'll have the ability to change them. I didn't much care for the motion blur, but when I turned it off I liked it less lol.

Thanks wizz, again a game with great art work!
But there are 2 things I can't understand:
1. How can anybody be/play so fast? :P
2.
"tribal type music with lots of drumming and bass. For those of you who have Sub woofers, I'd turn the bass down a little."

Why should I turn down the the bass? It's the perfect music for Sub Woofers (Sorry! To my neighbours)

wow, this is a very well made game. I tried it using a keyboard and Mouse (couldn't be bothered digging out my X-Box controller, lol, and found it easy to play even with the keyboard, so don't be put off if you don't have a controller. (I'm not saying the game is easy, lol) I was really surprised when the game opened up and I found myself (well my totem) in a 3D environment. This is definitely one of the better freebies that's been posted over the length of this project.

Today's game is an excellent platformer titled Igneous. Here's just a quick little synopsis from the developer:

Igneous is an action platformer where you play as a tiki totem trying to escape from a raging volcano. By running and jumping, players have to navigate their way through dark caverns, forge raging lava rivers and cross crumbling bridges to make it out of the inferno alive. With stunning graphics and intense physics, each level is a new challenge to overcome. Easy to pick up, but hard to master, Igneous is an adventure you won't soon forget! Escape!

HOLY WOW!!!!! This game is beautiful.......and incredibly hard! The whole pace of the game is like playing Sonic. For fans of Sonic, this is a game for you. That being said, the recommended specs are rather high (this truly is a beautiful game...one of the best looking graphics I've seen for a free game.) So long story short you basically just run and try to dodge various objects that are flying at you from the back and front of you. The hardest part is when the bridges start falling apart and you have to jump from one to the next. You'll just have to either play or watch the video to understand. The following are the System Specs:

Igneous will only run on Windows XP / Vista / 7 Operating Systems.

RECOMMENDED SYSTEM SPECS:
-- High end Nvidia (9600) or ATI graphics card (Shader model 3.0 required)
-- Dual core processor (Intel Core 2 Duo)
-- 2GB RAM
-- 200MB Hard Drive Space
-- Xbox 360 Controller*

You will probably want to break out your 360 controller for this one. For those of you without a 360 controller, you'll have to stick to mouse and keyboard as there is no other support for gamepads. By the way, you don't need the high end graphics card it's just recommended. My Nvidia 8800 did more than great so even the lower end graphics (6000 and 7000) cards should be adequate. Don't expect much in the way of music. It's basically just tribal type music with lots of drumming and bass. For those of you who have Sub woofers, I'd turn the bass down a little. All said 5/5 from me, and definitely one of my new favorite games from this project.
