List of favorites is rather long (obviously the "most favorite" GOTD ones - I have purchased).

I'm only listing the ones (I remember) that I have purchased/non-GOTD releases (many as a direct result of the GOTD promotion). Where I purchased a license when a DIFFERENT program from the same developer was on GOTD - I put the GOTD promotion title in brackets.

Just goes to show when the software appears on GOTD (and it is good - I'm usually a tough judge) - it results in sales. When I see potential or I have a serious interest in the software - I may offer to help testing and reviewing new versions (my professional background is in software development).

I though I'd resurrect this thread. Rather than list the top three programs you've found most useful just list those that you've found useful over the last few years or since you started visiting the giveaway project, and those that you've purchased (if any)

My list isn't in any order of preference. I've starred those that I've purchased (Though to be honest I can't remember all of the ones I've purchased)

1) Zoner Photo Studio 13 (loved this ever since we got version 9 and haven't bothered to install my copy of Photoshops since using it. It doesn't have most of what Photoshops has, but it does have everything I need for simple photo editing)

2) Robotask

3) Paragon Partition Manager

4) Magic score

5) Driver Magician

6) Outpost Security Suite (considering subscribing when year is up)

7) Aston 2

8) Mamutu (considering subscribing when year is up)

9) Paragon Backup & Recovery (love the rescue disc) & Paragon Rescue Kit Pro

10) Process Lasso *

11) Game Booster Premium

12) Dark Castle, Ancient Castle, Dinosaur, Nautilus, Planet Earth 3D, Planet Jupiter, Solar System - Earth 3D, Solar system 3D, The Lost Watch, Sun Village, Moon 3D, Mars 3D, and Mechanical Clock 3D Screensavers (led me to purchase a few others)

13) Multiset

14) Ay Recovery (I purchased an earlier version of this called Eaz Fix) *

24) Easy Macro Recorder

25) Anvir Task Manager * (went on to purchase Anvir Security Suite with three years of sun=bscription to the antivirus part of the ptrrogrm. Still undecided about which is best Anvir or Process Lasso though Lasso doesn't have the AV addition)

26) Buffer Zone (not sure which I prefer Buffer Zone or Returnil intend to purchase oe of them when I can afford to)

27) All Media Grabber

need to convert some records to MP3

I'm not sure how far you want to go with this, e.g. how much time, effort, & $ you want to spend... maybe you can take something from this that you can use?

To play the records 1st step of course is the turntable, where more mechanical aspects [tonearm, turntable drive mechanism etc.] matter. The cartridge matters too, but you may be able to save some money if this is a one-off by not worrying about how long the cartridge will last. I'm skeptical you'd find much quality in or with the usual USB turntable affairs for converting a record collection, or all in one units for that matter, & would suggest a regular turntable for home audio or perhaps one of the DJ models.

Optional but I think worth it if you had a home audio turntable, a small mixer can take the signal from the turntable, amplifying it as necessary, & provide the output signal to your PC/laptop. I think many DJ turntables might be designed to work with your PC/laptop already. Using the mixer you could make sure the signal was as high or loud as possible without overwhelming the PC/laptop audio electronics [e.g. clipping], allow you to adjust bass/treble &/or provide an equalizer, might have added filtering &/or FX, & would have a separate jack(s) for headphone monitoring of the signal going into your PC/laptop.

Alternatively you can always mic your stereo speakers -- using a mic to record what comes out of the speakers has been around a long time. You'd still have to have the turntable, but maybe you'd have use for the microphones when this project was over?

For the actual recording, if you wanted the least amount of noise your best bet might be an external recorder -- the electronics inside a PC add interference noise whether you're using the PC's on-board audio chipset, a sound card, or some USB audio. Otherwise look up the specs of how much noise whatever hardware will introduce & compare -- when it comes to digitizing the analog signal you probably won't find a whole lot of difference, so it's more about how much noise brand X will add vs. brand Y. You may well find that on-board chipset is as good as many add-ons, & probably better than some.

When you're recording line-in [the mono or stereo signal] the recording software itself isn't going to really effect the recording quality -- all it's doing is taking the ones & zeros your audio hardware gives it & writing that to a file. Higher end stuff lets you add FX on-the-fly, maybe lets you record more than 2 channels, may play back an existing track(s) while it records & so on. If your hardware supports higher bit depth & sampling rates you may need better software to use them, but that's more an oversight on the part of any developers who've left that out, & when the final goal is MP3s, probably irrelevant anyway.

You will probably want to record to .wav using your hardware's internal sampling rate [look it up but probably 48 rather than 44.1], then use a noise filter to try & get rid of most of the noise associated with vinyl records. Optionally you might want to do other processing, e.g. normalize, then convert that to MP3. If your MP3s are going to be 44.1 & you recorded at 48, look for software that can use dithering for that resample step. Audacity or Wavosaur should do what you need, but places like Musiciansfriend.com often have home versions of bigger name audio apps on sale -- if you can get the job done during the 30 trial check out Sony's Sound Forge.

Palomita,

---------------------------

There are a few points in the article that are not explained fully.

Firstly (IANAL...) windows can typically be purchased in two flavours - an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) license or a Retail License. There are others that typically affect businesses - like Volume licenses where the company negotiates to purchase a large quantity of copies of Windows (or Office etc etc)

Computer builders usually include an OEM license for the main reason of price. OEM licenses are quite a bit cheaper than retail licenses - which allows the builder to either sell the computer cheaper - or make more profit.

Users who wander into a retail outlet will usually see on the shelf, fancy boxed copies of windows - these are the retail copies.

The difference between the two - OEM licenses once installed are then associated with that one PC forever. You are not allowed to uninstall an OEM license from one computer and install it on another (newer?) PC. The OEM license is not transferable to another computer.

Retail Licenses you may remove from one PC and install on another PC (but only one at a time).

The second point that Microsoft started to bundle "diskless" copies of Windows with new PCs that are shipping so Microsoft could make more money - I doubt. If they wanted to make more money they could just drop the OEM license altogether and require every license to be the more expensive Retail license.

The reason the OEM license exists, is because many PC Builders include other programs (many that are unwanted by the user), custom drivers, wallpapers and other files to customise the OOBE (Out Of Box Experience). Allowing PC Builders to configure a custom version of Windows to show the new PC in the best light possible to its new owner/purchaser. They also typically include utilities to create recovery/setup disks so you can return the PC back to it's original setup (if things go really wrong).

So shipping PCs with a custom copy of windows on the hard disk is less about saving Microsoft money, and more about making life easier (and more flexible) for the PC Builders. Conversely - life as a result isn't always "easier" and "more flexible" for the owner of the PC.

As for what is legal/illegal when selling a PC with software. If you include the Retail license on the PC you are selling - you cannot keep it for yourself. You cannot use the OEM license of Windows if you sell the PC (even if you remove OEM windows from the PC you are selling).

Some software licenses include a legal clause along the lines that the software is licensed to you and you are not allowed to sell/rent/giveaway the software to anyone else (even if you were to give up the license/possession of the software). I'm doubtful such a clause would stand up if tested in court (for some countries). Some license agreements can be pretty outrageous - but nobody reads them, other than as a cure for insomnia.

I want to sell my old computer, but a friend said it was illegal to sell it with Windows and other programs still installed.

Is that true? Paul L

In certain circumstances, yes. When selling a computer with an operating system installed, it is illegal to do so without

also supplying the licence for it, as well as any other licensed software installed.

Shareware programs are typically licensed to the buyer, which means if you sell your old machine with the programs installed,

you cannot install them on your new machine using the same licence because this would be considered software piracy.
Microsoft soon worked out it could maximise profits and reduce piracy further by distributing new machines without Windows

disks at all, instead including the required files in a separate folder or special partition on the hard drive.

This was all very well until the drive died, whereupon customers were left without an easy means of reinstalling Windows.
If you are buying a second- hand machine, ensure you get all relevant licenses with it.

If the seller doesn't supply a valid key and you use the computer, you are technically a software pirate.

Haven't found the mail yet, copmom-

HammertimeAZ- The seagate 500gig has 4 pins, and I have the jumper installed- I figured with the PCI bus bottlenecking throughput, the original low speed SATA was adequate.

the old disk *is* the boot, but it's got enough hours it's gonna die one of these days, so I keep trying.

The hitachi's have but 2 pins, but they are matched to 3gb/s SATA ports anyway. As far as I know they are still 512 byte sectors, not the 'enhanced' 4096 byte ones that are gonna give XP a hard time, but bust the 2TB barrier.

all is getting dumped into a holding pattern as it looks like I'm going to be leaving the state- my sister has an 'anomalous mass' in the limbic area of the brain, and the 9th she looks to be going in for a biopsy that's 50/50 to survive. And it's inoperable. and if it isn't cancer, radiation is useless.

GoodGOTD...

Sounds like you already tried the BIOS thing so try this...

You may have to change the jumpers on your SATA? I guess there are OS and size limitations that Refer us to Microsoft docs "Q303013" for XP and "Q305098" for Media Ctr. Is the SATA a 3.0Gb/sec attached to a 1.5Gb/sec card or host controllers VIA, VT8237, VT 8237R, VT6420, VT6421L, SIS760 ND SIS964? B/c they do not support auto speed negotiation with 3.0 Gb drives. These systems with the above chip-sets will hang, lock up, or fail to detect the drive during boot...this may be your problem? The recommendation is to: "Apply a jumper to the out-most pins" (closet to the edge of the drive {Back of Drive = [pins 1234...SATA Interface...SATA Power]} - apply to pins 1& 2 of the jumper block (which will force the drive into 1.5Gb/sec transfer mode) allowing it to function with the above mentioned chipsets.

For Single Drive Installs…(which it sounds like you are trying?)
Windows 2000 and XP require embedded SATA host drivers for embedded motherboards and add-in SATA host cards to be loaded from a Floppy (YUCK!) drive. The SATA driers are usually contained on the CD that came with your MB or host adapter card. You have to extract these prior to installation, however, VISTA will allow them to be installed from a CD.
1.	Boot to Windows CD
2.	When Prompted by Windows to install 3rd party SCSI or RAID drivers press the F6key then the “S” key when prompted to specify additional devices
3.	Insert the SATA driver diskette or CD and press enter
4.	Follow the onscreen instructions to finish installing Windows
Lastly, if all else fails…use your old disc as your boot and ad the SATA disk as a folder through Disc Manager in the System Management section or set it up as an additional drive(s).
Hope some of this info helped? HammermtimeAZ

Just another option that sounds like it may be the answer to your troubles??? Good luck and thanks again for the advice! HammertimeAZ

@GMMan- Tried both mirror and (mostly) image programs. including Paragon. First. Drive image XML couldn't see the sata drive. Fat32, NTFS didn't seem to make a difference. Pretty much as I said above, the replies I got back suggested geometry issues. heck, I don't know how to find out the internal geometry- but it can't be near the CHS values and probably the LBA numbers aren't more than translations. I haven't looked up what notation it uses, but I betcha it isn't a match for the actual platters.

(I think paragon said drive geometry, driveimage xml said something like if it didn't think it could it wouldn't let you try... like I said, when I come up with a way to try acronis true image I wanna give it a shot- seems more people have gotten happy outcomes with it than others. Maybe they know more about mapping than I. they'd have to.)

The raid1 array in the other box I went so far as to slipstream the drivers into a copy of the install disc. Still tossed a brick in my teeth. The drivers are there, it sees the array (I think the thing shows yet another CHS geometry for the array once formed just to tick people off), goes ahead and clean installs right up to the shift to the hdd to complete installation but won't boot to do it.

@Robert- I've had LBA access on as far as I can all along. unfortunately, the *PCI card* does the SATA detection on the triple-drive dunce, it AFAIK doesn't have a setting for that- and as is too usual these days the choice is LBA auto or LBA off in the system BIOS.

LBA has been an automatic check for on since (or before) I got past 20 gig drives and started dropping in the 80 gigs as the best price per gig. (western digital caviar SE's for the warranty and extra features)

At the moment, ticked as I am, I'm still glad the machine with the sata ports only let me switch a drive to IDE compatible mode. At least it boots. so I can test the *rest* of the machine with real-world ops, anyway. And start working around what isn't there.

Like the game port- now I have a USB floppy to work with, I noticed it was missing too.

And my MAME control panel plugs into one.

Thanks for the advice, keep it coming- you may yet spot what I've been missing on these silly SATAs.

(I do think I ought to try a better adapter card, but the house taxes have got us playing Ohio-class submarine on the budget. Run silent, Run deep, pray we have enough to make it to the 3rd.)

Instead of doing a exact mirror, just image the filesystem. Paragon should be able to do that. Of course, if the filesystem is mapped to the CHS (and I'm no expert on filesystems), you may have problems.

I'd sure like to try Acronis True Image- guess I'll try Macrium- but the killer here is the different box- and the 2TB drive, if the old one is Parallel ATA and the new one is SATA.

As far as my experience has gone- the different box with the same PATA drive is doable- done it several times, it just takes an obscenely long process of changing drivers.

Even one slightly larger (in today's terms- like upping from a 20 to 80 gig drive) is not that big a deal.

However, I have yet to get a PATA installation (partition on an 80, 30 gigs in size) copied onto a 500gb SATA drive and gotten it to boot. Ghost, all the Paragon stuff, XML Drive image, other bits and fragments....

And that is *with* the SATA/RAID drivers installed already, and so on. I've gotten all kinds of excuses from companies or developers (some of this stuff won't even admit the SATA drive is even there) but the most common is that what causes the problem is the drive geometry (cylinders, sectors, heads) makes the partition not end on a cylinder boundary. Or some other 'well, it's not the same' excuse.

See, all ATA (IDE is more descriptive) drives lie to the operating system about it's CHS data. And have since the itty-bitty ones first came out. what they really are constructed like inside the tin can does not match what's on the label, or very VERY likely not even close.

As an example, this 500gb hitachi I have in my hand says 16383 cylinders 16 heads, and 63 sectors. Since it has at most 5 platters, there's no way it can have over 10 heads. and you don't get that data density with 63 sectors. by Large Block Addressing it's 973, 773 and 168 sectors. By the label. I haven't found a data sheet on it from hitachi to even find out how many platters it has.

If somebody pulls this trick off, please let me know how the frack you pulled it off, I wanna get the pair of ready-to-fail PATA drives out of my 2800 system and boot off the Seagate 500gb SATA-2 drive by itself!

(the SATA drive and PCI interface card cost less than a 320 gig PATA drive- and the PATA drives were obviously being phased out- kinda made it a no-brainer until I tried to move over to it by itself...)
