Hi Keith, basically the free games project is just an integral part of the game discussion forums. any post beginning with a week number is part of the project, plus the games synopsis, which is accessible from the main forum page in the stickies. You can find the synopsis HERE. The synopsis is rather out of date at the moment as i've not included any games from week 100 onwards. I keep meaning to bring it up to date as it's a valuable resource. You can find out whether a particular game has been posted previously, tohugh obviously there are hundreds of games in the firums that haven't been added yet. I did start working on it some moths ago, but petered out due to other commitments.

When you post a game if you include the week number and the title Good Games to grab, it's basically part of the project. I never tohugh to create a seperate forum for the project when i first started it as I never intended to keep posting for so long. Also if you can include key words in the Tags section it makes it easier to find if you want to do a search. :) I've added tags for this game.

Thanks Keith. If you find any more games would you post them in the free games project. Otherwise they tend to get lost in the depth of the forums . Thank you. I've taken the liberty of editing the title to include the project moniker. :)

Dead Meets Lead, a zombie shooter, has been made free by the developer on Desura, it seems permanently.
You can also download it directly from the game's official site:
http://deadmeetslead.com/
The developer provides the download key there.

The game apparently was nominated for Game of the Year at Swedish Games award in 2011. Though reviews on Desura are just so-so.

Genetos (26.9Mb)

Genetos is a ‘different ‘, - unique in its own way, and thoroughly enjoyable Japanese vertically scrolling shooter, where you actually play through and go through the history of space shooters in five evolutionary stages. It starts off as a mundane Space Invaders clone, progressing to a game more like Galaxians in the second stage, then on to greater things!

Throughout you have energy orbs to collect as well of course as firing at enemies. You gain extra weapons and movement abilities as you go through the stages, and each level is more sophisticated than the previous levels. Interestingly, your success, movement patterns and firing patterns determine future enemy and boss behaviour, adding significantly to the levels of challenge involved. They also affect your weapons and reactions to enemy fire, so if you move forward aggressively you’ll get to use the ‘blade’, a powerful short-range weapon. If you take too many bullet hits you’ll get the ability to slow the game down, making it easier for you to dodge bullets.

The third level is a far more standard and much more modern vertically scrolling shooter with bombs added to your weapons arsenal. Things continue to get more interesting, with simple 3D graphics and a bullet hell environment for level 4. From level 4 on, you can also scroll the screen sideways. Should you get as far as level 5, the Final Generation, you’ll find that it has more of a story to it, and it goes through the phases of evolution such as birth, variation and extinction loosely following the theory of natural selection and Darwin's theory of evolution.

At the default difficulty level you do get plenty of extra ships, but you can always choose the highest difficulty level for a real challenge! Collecting green DNA powerups allows the player to gain special attacks and bonuses as does things like defeating a boss with a weak ship or weak weapons. There’s a boss or ‘mutant’ to defeat at the end of each stage.

Controls are ‘Arrow’ keys : Move ship / Move cursor; ‘ Z’ : Shoot / Decide; ‘X’ : Launch a Bomb (at level 3 or higher) / Cancel; ‘L-Shift’ : Sub-weapon & Move slowly (at level 4 or higher); ‘ L-Ctrl’ : Move slowly (at level 4 or higher); ‘ V’ : View the Navigation; and additionally ‘Spacebar’ : Toggle pause mode; ‘ESC’ : Quit game; ‘ 1’ : Reboot game; ‘F1’ : Change Fullscreen / Window mode; ‘F2’ : Change window size; ‘ F3’ : Toggle Mute mode; ‘F4’ : Toggle Negaposi mode (Reverse the screen color); ‘ F5’ : Toggle Motion blur mode; ‘ G’ : Display Collision Area; ‘ L’ : Display Enemy's Life Gauge; ‘ B’ : Apply Motion blur while holding key.

It plays Windowed or full-screen in XP, Vista and Win 7. The graphics and sound are rather more basic for the first two levels but you should love the graphics from level 3 on! The game has an English manual and English menus.

It’s a great shooter, with an interestingly different premise, and don’t worry, it shouldn’t take you too long to clear the first two levels! From level 3 on, it really is a very most excellent space shooter!

Dread Lock (113Mb)

This is a fabulous free Japanese Doujin 2D side-scrolling platform sh’mup game by Team GrisGris, featuring gorgeous simulated 3D graphics, giant mechs and huge boss battles. You are on board a robot fighter, tackling both small and very large enemy robots, and you can choose/change weapons as you wish.

In the year 20XX a giant meteor falls on the central district president and his Earth Protection Force as monster waves of attacks suddenly and simultaneously occur all around the globe. At the same time, a dangerous computer virus has spread to the entire network of computers world-wide, all-told, causing a great disaster. You are Rock Hongo aka "Dread Locks" an elite soldier who is given the task of eradicating the evil alien forces. Ride a robot with super weapons and save the earth in time!

Select your weapon from the standard gun, cannon or missile launcher and upgrade these by collecting red power-up items. Other power-ups can restore your health/ repair your robot ship. Ammunition packs are color coded, red for the gun, blue for the cannon and yellow for missiles. There are temporary shield power ups and also some platform elements, such as moving elevators. The platforming element is a nice addition as you have to time jumps and make multiple double jumps accurately to progress through the levels. You can also backtrack and fight more robots and sometimes get an extra power-up or bonus or two. There’s extra lives and extra life packs, and an add on vertical shooter that hovers above your robot (it fires in tandem with normal shots but you can fire this separately using the ‘C’ key, if need be). All the weapons have a good long range.

Enemy robots come in different sizes and with different abilities and there are fixed guns firing at you in places. You start off with 3 lives and if you find the easy difficulty setting too tame there’s the normal and much more difficult option.

And if stunning battles aren’t enough, there are also strict time limits for each level!

Controls are : ‘L/R’ arrow keys to move, ‘X’ key shoot /confirm menu selection . ‘Z’ or ‘Up’ arrow key to jump. A double jump can be carried out by pressing either jump key twice quite quickly. You can also hover briefly in mid-air if you time a double jump accurately. Holding down the jump button after a double jump will cause your mech to hover and stay in flight for a short time. Joystick/gamepad use is supported.

It has superb graphics and a great sound track, which also gets more intense during boss battles. The animations are very nicely drawn as well and the explosions are great!

The main menus in-game are in English.

Dread Lock plays full-screen in XP, Vista and Win 7. Use the ‘Alt’ + ‘F4’ keys to quit the game. The ‘Esc’ key pauses the game. The config exe in the extracted folder is in Japanese, sorry, no translation but you can set the Gamepad/joystick buttons, audio volume and screen mode (16 or 32 bit) and it is quite easy to figure out (or just play the game at the default settings!). The game plays well on a fairly modest PC, so should play on practically any modern laptop, especially as there's a 16 bit screen option.

This is a cracking good game. Almost needless to say it’s very great fun, battling small and giant Mechs in intense battles. But surviving is difficult and getting through to higher levels is a real challenge!

There’s a smaller demo download if you wish to try it out, and it was a commercial title but you can now get the full version free via the links from the main download page. (The main download links don’t involve any waiting time, and you can download both files simultaneously).

Just finished this. I have to say, for a free game it's very good. It had me jumping right up to the last level!

I tried to play without the patch as it deletes two levels, but it kept freezing.
Overall a good effort although there were still a lot of bugs even with the patch, freezes/hangs, getting stuck on/under furniture and zombies 'ragdolling'

Also, there was an annoying tendency to kick you back to the desktop with line errors on loading saved games.

Still, as I said terrific fun and quite scary lol.
Thanks Chazzo :)

P.S. Just checked, the patch deletes levels 4 & 9.

Euthanasia (572Mb)

This is probably the scariest game I’m posting for this weekend. It certainly rates a great scare! It’s a free Indie first person horror shooter game with 10 full playable levels. But what a FPS horror shooter game! It’s certainly the best game I’m posting for Halloween! It really is a tremendous and first rate FPS game!

You play as an ex-soldier wounded and crippled in a taxi accident, then confined to a wheelchair. You are assigned to a mental hospital after trying to kill yourself. You plea to be euthanized as you cannot cope with your very inhospitable physical and mental condition. At the clinic a compassionate doctor gives you a lethal injection, and after you die, this is what happens next! In that sleep of death...what dreams may come?

The doctor may have put you out of one misery, only to find you in an incomparably worse one, with no seeming end to it all! Ever! This is not one for children or the feint-hearted! It has powerful and very macabre scenes, graphic and grisly violence, disturbing images and sounds and use of weapons for very violent effect.

You find yourself in the despoiled remnant of a hospital where the most gruesome of things has taken place and might still be taking place. Do you ever have any hope of escaping the place? The surroundings are grim and the rooms dark and uninviting, and then who knows what ‘lives’ or abides and is lurking there around the next corner?! There are 4 types of weapons and a lot of mysteries and secrets to discover. As well as this, there are puzzles to solve as well as surviving the longest while you can!

The game’s level design and atmosphere is dark and scary from the outset, and the tension just doesn’t ease up right through the game. This scariness is present right through the game. There’s not one a single moment to relax, you always feel scared, haunted, it's like being enveloped in ever-deepening paranoia. Even in rooms with apparently no enemies, there’s always that expectation that these will appear at any time, and soon! There are zombies, zomboids and who knows what else you’ll have to to confront! Deeper and darker than your darkest dreams and nightmares!

Euthanasia has detailed environments, great heads-up displays, good weapons and weapon textures and a just about perfect sound design. The 3D first person environment is presented excellently. The soundtrack really enhances the tense and spine-chilling feel of the game. It’s an intensely creepy game with a fantastic deep and gloomy atmosphere! Lots of blood everywhere. And an atmosphere of extreme terror. Absolutely brilliant!

The graphics and sound are easily comparable to those in major commercial FPS releases. It runs in XP, Vista and Win 7 but you’ll need a P4 or equivalent processor running at 3GHz + and 256Mb of video RAM for the game to run properly.

It requires a graphics card that will support Pixel Shader 3, i.e. supports DirectX 9.0c, which most modern cards do. You’ll need to ensure your DirectX 9.0c is right up to date. Download the hotfix patch too (74Mb), to avoid unnecessary game crashes and make the game run properly, then copy and paste the extracted Euthanasia patch folder into the main game folder. Install does take a while.

Controls Move - 'W,A,S,D' keys ; Interact/Use 'E' key; Drop Item 'Q' key; Jump - 'Spacebar'; Run/Sprint Left 'Shift' key; Switch Weapon - Mousewheel; Choose Weapon '1,2,3,4' keys; holster weapon '0'(zero) key; Fire - Mouse 1; Aim/Zoom - Mouse 2; reload 'R' key. Use the ‘C’ key to crouch, and the ‘E’ key to read clipboards which contain useful information. You can also save your game by pressing the ‘Esc’ key during the game and switch from window to full screen by pressing the usual ‘Alt’ + ‘Enter’. A walkthrough is provided as a text file in the game folder.

Euthanasia feels creepy; disturbing, and is, by far, the most thrilling and really scary horror experience I've ever encountered in a freeware FPS game. I finish with one game designer’s comment - "I've played a LOT of scary games in my time, but not many... no, NONE were as scary as Euthanasia."

Turn the lights down low and scare the creeps and bejesuses out of yourself! Boy, this is a good one!

Darius Gaiden (15.4Mb)

This is a really excellent side-scrolling shooter that has stood the test of time. It is of course based on Taito’s hit game Darius from 1994, and it was some years before this PC port arrived. It came out on the Sega Saturn and then PlayStation after the arcades.

Aliens have taken over the planet Darius and it is your task to reclaim the planet. Darius has been one of the finest shmups series in the coin-op arcades over the years in the 90’s and Darius Gaiden is the third (and one of the best!) in the series. Do you hate fish? Well here’s another chance to blow them to smithereens! You have your trusty spaceship, laser beams and shields at your command.

The Darius series use a unique and excellent weapons system. There are power-ups to collect to boost your lasers, shields and missiles (red for lasers, blue for shields and green for missiles). There are two bars at the top of the screen to indicate the status of your missiles and shields. Collect three green power-ups and your missiles are upgraded a level. Laser power-ups change your lasers each time they are collected. You go from a single shot to triple shot, to a double laser, but you lose the power-ups if you die, You do retain any weapons you have collected though. You start with just 3 lives and there are some fantastic and amazing boss fights if you can last out that long! There are obstacles to avoid crashing into, including the ground, and whole hosts of many and often difficult enemies to confront, often in a bullet-hell environment.

Let me say from the outset you won’t find it easy to stay alive long in this game. Although it starts off easy enough; even on the Easy setting, it soon becomes tantalizingly hard then just plain difficult as in really really difficult! And it’s just plain blinking hard or nearly impossible on the other difficulty settings! You can (and probably will!) spend hours and hours on end playing Darius Gaiden, it’s that good!

It plays in 1 or 2 player mode with the ‘Enter’ key and ‘Space’ key to start each player. You can play it single player by pressing the ‘Space’ key to start the game from the menu. For 2 player mode, press ‘Enter’ and then ‘Space’ to play both players at once if wished, ‘Esc’ key to return to the menu and menu or ‘Alt’ + ‘F4’ keys to quit. The menu options allow you to set keys/check default controls settings (changes are saved) and joystick/gamepad use is also supported. It plays full-screen in XP or lower, Vista and Win 7 and may play on DOS machines. If you do have any problems though this is unlikely, you can use DosBox, but it runs fine natively where I’ve tried it in Win 7. There’s a high score table and demo play mode between games. It runs from the extracted folder, including from a USB stick. Magnificent!

The graphics are outstanding for this type of game, very slick indeed - and you’ll find the sprites very well drawn - with enemies that appear and move very quickly, and there are spectacular and huge and ginormous explosions. The sound is equally as good, in fact exceptional, giving a wall of sound at times with stunning sound effects.

The incredible Darius arcade saga enters the next generation faster than a meteor, hotter than a blazing sun! You are the last son of a dying star. Command your state-of-the-art Silver Hawk attack ship, and hunt enemy squadrons to the ends of the universe! Intense shooting action! 28 enemy-packed levels! Smart bombs! Wave lasers! Homing missiles! Multi-stage power-ups! Cooperative two-player action! The odds are against you... the fate of Darius lies in your hands!

I am not understating when I say this has to be one of the best, maybe even the very best freeware side-scrolling shooter!

So don’t spend more time reading this. Get out there and play this!

Vacant Ark (9.8Mb)

This an unusual side-scrolling shooter with quite a difference. As well as a range of great looking creatures to encounter, you only have 6 bullets and have to collect gems to reload each time you run out of bullets. There’s a lot more to it than this though. It’s a Japanese game with an English menu.

You play in an undersea scenario, with you as the pilot of a Cyborg mermaid, swimming in an ocean rather full of hostile creatures, including some rather hostile boss mermaids. You have something akin to an R-force device namely a ‘stone-fish’ in front of your craft that can act as a shield, weapon or converter to convert enemy bullets into gems to collect to get more bullets to fire. The option fire modes are riot, force and cannon. You do temporarily get a short range shooter while you are out of bullets. It’s a bullet-hell undersea environment, and your only chance is to stop enemies and enemy bullets in their tracks, as well as dodging what you can. You of course have to dodge if you haven’t collected enough gems to reload!

It all gels together very well, along with some amazing music, and there is some respite between full bullet-hell parts and some parts that aren’t quite so intense, to make it really very playable and a thoroughly enjoyable experience, if you like 2D shooters. The boss fights at the end of each of the 4 stages have a dual attack mode with a force device and red crystal ammo, some bosses are recurring and there’s a mini-boss to contend with as well, until the final boss encounter. Levels are timed, which means a boss will leave if you don’t defeat them in time, preventing progress to the next level. The 4 difficulty levels are called Shallow, Middle, Deep and Abyss.

The graphics are very well drawn and very imaginative, as well as it being a very colorful game to play. The sprite design is really fantastic. Gameplay is very fluid (I know it’s underwater!) as the animations are very crisp and smooth and the controls are well-responsive. It really is very impressive for a freeware game. I know some prefer ships or suchlike to fight and you might or might not like the undersea location, but it does play really well and it gets challengingly difficult/very difficult (as in Nintendo hard!) after the fairly easy first level. You have 3 lives to begin with which can increase up to a maximum of 6 lives. There are some great extra effects such as bubbles and rippling scenery and the game plays at a lower resolution giving a real retro feel to gameplay!

It should run in XP or lower. I’ve had it running on one Win 7 Ultimate laptop, but it wouldn’t run on another nor on my main Win 7 computer with a NVidia 7600 graphics card, nor on an XP machine with an ATI Radeon 1150 graphics card. Where it wouldn’t run it showed a Direct Draw error. As I have restored default advanced graphics settings and have the latest NVidia drivers, it seems to depend on which graphics card and driver you have installed whether it will run or not in XP, Vista or Win 7. As it’s such a good game it’s definitely worth giving it a try to see if it runs on your computer!

Controls are ‘Arrow’ keys to move, ‘Z’ key to shoot/toggle shield when released and ‘X’ key to toggle weapons mode. ‘Esc’ key or ‘Alt’ + ‘F4’ to quit and ‘F2’ to toggle between full-screen and windowed modes. ‘F1’ key to pause the game. Select in the menu using a ‘Shift’ key.

A great side-scrolling shooter if your computer will play it!

This is a fine horizontal scrolling sea shooting game with boss fights. It’s a team effort with quite retro graphics and ‘chunky’ music. It runs natively in XP but it needs the converter for GM6 (see the link "problems running Game maker games" HERE) to run in Vista or Win 7. It is a ‘partly’ unfinished work, but it is wholly (and very enjoyably!) playable. The good features include the ability to lock onto targets, two weapons with easy selection and some good backgrounds. There’s a tutorial, arcade and campaign mode, though the ‘options’ isn’t implemented in the menu. ‘Arrow’ keys to move, ‘Z’ key to fire/change weapons, ‘C’ key to change the formation properties of your (orange) accompanying ships and ‘X’ key to lock/unlock on the nearest target. ‘Esc’ key to return to menu/quit. It doesn’t quite have the panache of some of the other shmups listed here, but it’s never-the-less a very good game for younger players!

Sure Shot 3D - 3D tactical shooter 5.6Mb

Sure Shot 3D is an interesting shooter with a difference, with the two soldiers on your side covering (and only firing along) a horizontal line across the screen. Baddies and hostages cross this line or stand across it at random, and you have to time your shots to avoid shooting your comrade on the opposite end of the line. It suits one or two players playing co-operatively, as the left shift/Ctrl and right shift/Ctrl are used for each of the two soldiers for shooting or crouching. It’s something of an artificial situation, but it works very well in practice. Repeat shooting downs the baddies faster, but runs a much higher risk of hitting your own man or your friend’s soldier if two are playing. It can lead to some hilarious moments or fierce arguments if you kill off the other soldier on your side.

It was a demo trial with 3 loads only, but is now unrestricted and freeware! It’s quite fun to play, though it doesn’t take too many hits to die, whether from enemy or ‘friendly’ fire. Killing a hostage is automatic mission fail. You can choose any of 10 different camera angles. The waves of enemies and hostages are randomised for each play. There are 5 areas and 25 stages if you can get that far, and cheats to discover along the way. There are also items like rope bombs and electrified cables once you can figure out how to use them. It’s all very competently implemented with a good number of missions and mission modes, including a training mode. Choose custom installation and be sure to uncheck the author’s toolbar, search and home page changes. Otherwise a very good game with very acceptable graphics and sound for the gameplay involved. All in all, great fun indeed!

No need to apologize, Chazzo. No need to hurry. We have games enough. R/l has to come first; even though it gets in the way of my game time. Grumble, grumble, grumble! Can't believe I was playing 3D Ultra Pinball Creep Night this afternoon for a while.

Wow! This game looks cool...Shades of the Silver Surfer maybe..or some Tron? Thanks Chazzo.
