Thanks for these wizz. Nice to see Noitu Love. I'd previously posted Chalk and Tripline from this site, but lost the link in my favorites following a forced format earlier this year. good site with some excellent games. I like the look of the Synth 9 games.

Looking forwards to checking all these out; though not just yet as I've finally got Fear 2 working. I bought it via Steam when it was on offer a coupleof months ago and until today was getting that game unavailable message. Today is the forst time I've managed to play it. also Red Faction guerilla is working again (thankfully). I'd really missed it ove the last few weeks. Oddly both started working after the last Steam update.

W.R.

p.s.

Have you downloaded the L4D2 demo yet. t was put out on general release yesterday. Tell Carolina we could have a game or two, though it only contains the fiorst two stages of one map. Still, it gives you a good idea as to what to expect. I was a little sad to see the back of the original cast, but you soon forget them, lol. I've still to try out all the custom maps fr L4D yet. i'm still trying out all the ones from the Killing floor competitin. I'm amazed at the overall quality of all of the maps. To be honest I was expecting a lot of the runners up to be rather badly made, but so far all of the ones I've plyed have been constructed really well. some such as the North Sea one are a little too large and maze like. I could never get to the shop throughout the four rounds and didn't survive the patriarch with just a pistol.

Do you know whether the second round maps have been released yet?

Since I slept through yesterday's game, I'm posting what was supposed to be yesterday's along with today's. Yesterday's game was a game that I had been saving for a rainy day and well it was raining here yesterday (as it has for much of the month) and I decided it was well time to dust it off. Noitu Love is an excellent old-school platformer. For today's game, I ran across a new developer called Syn9. Syn9 has some pretty interesting games in their database and I've chosen 3 of them to highlight: Gorevania (zombie shooter,) The Griffon Legend (Zelda-like RPG,) and Prompt Critical (shmup.) Without further ado:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Noitu Love

I'm very fond of this game and as I've said, I've been saving it for the right time. Considering how we've embarked on our 1 year anniversary, I thought this would be a great week to introduce some stellar games. Hopefully some of you have agreed that the games this week have been a little above par. The following is a review from Abandonia Reloaded:

"Gone are the days of classic platforming!" cry the fans that remember the original Mario, Bionic Commando, MegaMan, Donkey Kong, and scores of other platformers that included the Nintendo-proven platform formula. If you are one of these fans, then look no further than Noitu Love and the Army of Grinning Darns; you won't find a better throwback to the days of retro platforming.

The story, although relatively shallow, deals with a mad scientist that has a rather strange fascination for robots and soldiers with smiles and plans for taking over the world with said minions. The plot does not really progress much between the initial introduction to the world's current state and the last level. You fight your way past hordes of grinning darns to get to the end of the level and fight a boss that is a greater minion of the mad scientist, until the very last level, where you get to trade blows with him yourself. A twist is thrown in where you have the ability to transform yourself into different creatures (a monkey, a super smart person with a big brain, and a bird) to get past certain obstacles. Although it was a great idea, I wished I had seen more used with it; there was great potential for some creature specialty combos, and it wasn't utilized until the last boss fight.

Unfortunately, the game probably would have been longer if more creativity had been put into the plot, but as it is, it is comprised of 6 levels that took me about two hours to beat on normal mode. Granted, I only have 24% of the game complete, but even if you play it on other difficulties to unlock more extras (of which there are hardly any), you'll still be playing the same levels with harder enemies. As it is, replayability is limited.

Although sometimes this same-old formula is bad (like in terms of the plot), the platforming action shines with old-school goodness as you run (and jump) circles around your enemies, all the while dodging bombs and bullets (or whatever other harmful projectiles that might come your way) and smashing your foes into the ground. The greatest part about all this fast-paced gameplay is the fact that it comes with an easy learning curve; you'll be beating up enemies like a kung-fu master in no time, thanks to Noitu Love's simplistic (and classic) controls.

Rounding out the game, and at the same time being the biggest reversion to classic platforming is definitely the graphics. They grab you, suck you in and do not let go, much like my mom's mashed potatoes. That's a good thing.

Download Noitu Love Here!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Gorevania

Gorevania is a great little 2d side-scrolling zombie shooter. Not much on story, but it is darned fun to play and a great little time waster. I know Stephen will appreciate this one. The following is a description by Syn9:

Use your shotgun and grenade launcher to blast away at the zombies.
Pickup the medical box to regain health. If you get bit by a zombie
your infection bar will begin to rise. Stop it from rising by picking
up a needle. Make sure to grab all the shotgun shells and grenades
you find so you dont run out of ammo.

Remember, stand too close to one of your grenades and you'll hurt
yourself too.

Controls
Left - Left Arrow
Right - Right Arrow
Jump - Up Arrow
Fire Shotgun - Space
Fire Grenade - CTRL
Aim Grenade - Up/Down Arrow
Pause - ESC/P

Download Gorevania Here!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Griffon Legend

The Griffon Legend is a fun Zelda-like RPG, with some outdated graphics. Don't let the graphics deter you though, as more often than not, outdated graphics actually add to the game. Consider this to be true here. TGL, actually has the distinguished honor of being the very first RPG created and finished using FreeBasic. This game led the way for many more RPG's using FreeBasic. It's a must download for any Zelda fan, or RPG in general. The following is a description from Syn9:

500 years after the Griffon-Dragon war, the Dragons have
returned to reclaim their empire. Cities are falling,
everyone is dieing, and the lone Griffon Knight Fayne is
caught up in the middle of it all.

During gameplay you can see up to 3 bars below your character.
The top is health, the next is attack strength (let it charge
to hit harder) and then spell strangth (same as attack). When
you learn new spells you will see their icons in the bottom
right corner with a meter below them to show them charging.
When the meter turns orange they are ready for use.

Controls:
ctrl - use item/cast spell
space - attack
esc - main menu
alt-enter - fullscreen/window

Download The Griffon Legend Here!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Prompt Critical

Prompt Critical is one of those newer style shmups where the developer incorporates highly stylized graphics and colors into the game. Though this game is slightly older, and the graphics aren't up to par with today's, it's still an excellent shmup worth hours of your time. If you don't have fun with this game, I'll refund your money in full and give you credit for one of next week's games. That's how confident I am (lol) In all seriousness, the graphics are great and the gameplay is intense enough to keep you coming back for more time after time. More from Syn9:

You are orbiting a worm hole and an enemy is coming through. It is your job to destroy them. Most of the time they fire homing bullets but sometimes they release a bullet bomb. If you do not shoot the incoming bullets they will take your health down.

When you see the blue star shoot it. You will receive a random powerup which can be health, missiles, or shields.

Destroying the environment and accuracy give you bonus points. As well as not getting hit.

Controls:
Mouse Look
Shoot = Left Click / Spacebar
Switch Weapon  = Right Click
Pause  = ESC / P

Download Prompt Critical Here!

Today I have a platforming shooter game for everyone titled Iji. I've had much fun with Iji.

The following (Including the images)is taken from the author's site:

Iji is an action-packed strategic platform shooter with a detailed story, large levels with multiple paths, powerful bosses and lots of secrets. There are alternate gameplay events, dialogues and scenes depending on what you do, a wealth of extras and bonus features, and seven stats to upgrade through a leveling system. Iji herself has superhuman strength and abilities, and can crack Nanotechnology, use her enemies' most devastating weapons against them, and be a pacifist or a killer - the story adapts to how you play. Soundtrack by Chris Geehan and Dan Byrne McCullhough, songs also by Tom Mauritzon and Captain Goodnight (and LifeForce, but their song was not originally recorded for Iji).

Iji has considerably higher system requirements than my older games, but should run fine on most gaming computers younger than five years.

For technical issues and possible solutions, please see the FAQ in the game manual. Note that this game is no longer being updated except for major bugfixes.

The controls are as follows:

Controls (redefinable):
Arrows = Move, jump, duck
Z = Kick
X = Fire
C = Use
Enter: Abort cracking / view detailed stats
Escape: Pause / skip chats / skip cutscenes
Keypad: Move the view
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 = Change weapon
Hold F2: Return to Main menu
Hold F4: Retry Sector/boss
Hold F12: Quit game

The game is only a 27mb download, but if you decide to download the music pack that would be an additional 48mb's. I think it's well worth the price of admission on this one and hopefully many of you will give it a chance.

Download here!

Hi Bill, (of course), sorry I had to be reminded. My memory is really appalling with all the opiate meds I have to take. I've not visited my Face Book page for ages. I set it up when an old work colleague Emailed me with an invite earlier this year, but I've not really got into using it properly yet. I've been too involved with the free games project and playing games, lol.

It's always a pleasure to fnd new (and free) games to share. I'm lucky enough to have the time (or maybe unlucky depending which way you look at it) to find them all.

regards

Definitely, though it's going to add some extra work to the free games project, as I'll need to ensure all the images are made the same size; otherwise the presentation (as you can see above) is going to be rather scruffy (which I dislike).

Today’s games include a decent cartoon racer, a Japanese space shoot em up (Shmup) and an unusual marble like shooter. The latter game is actually multiplayer, but I think it’s worth exploring as it really does feel like you’re playing a single player game. I’ve not played it for a while so don’t know how the servers are, but it may be a good game to play with some of the giveawayoftheday steam group. There are around 40 members now. If we all downloaded it we could have an amazing game. :)

Super Tux Kart

One of the few Super Nintendo games that have really stood the test of time is Mario Kart, and the concept of guiding an armed cartoon character around a series of tracks never seems to lose its appeal. SuperTuxKart provides you with a blast from the past with a game that borrows more than a little of its ideas from the Nintendo classic.
Despite being a bit of a rip-off of Mario Kart (or because of it, depending on which way you look at it), this game is great fun to play. The courses are diverse, challenging and easy on the eye, and the characters are interesting too. There are lots of amusing power-ups to pick up and chuck at your opponents along the way, and the computer-controlled drivers are certainly not afraid to use them, so you need to be on your toes if you want to get anywhere in SuperTuxKart.

There are three different game modes to test you, namely: Time Trial, Quick Race and Grand Prix. Unfortunately, there's no equivalent of Mario Kart's Battle Mode, which is still my favorite part of the game. Also, as the game is still in development, there are a few glitches such as the fact that some of the levels take a long time to load.

SuperTuxKart is an arcade kart racing game featuring Tux and friends. It is a fun-racer game, focusing ease of play.

Super Tux Kart is a fun little racing software similar to the very popular Super Mario Kart 64 game. Players can choose between Grand Prix, Quick Race and Time Trial modes, and multiplayer modes for two, three or four participants. After deciding on a skill level, you can select from a choice of nine characters. Finally you choose one of 15 well designed tracks, and enjoy the ride. Soundtrack and background music isn’t bad either.

Version 0.5 offers 6 new and improved tracks, a new game mode (´Follow the Leader´), new Grand Prix, new menu, some new music, and translations into German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and Swedish. The new tracks and game modes need to be unlocked: you have to fulfill a challenge in order to use them. If all challenges are done, a preview of the upcoming skidding support can be tested.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cho Ren Sha 64K   (<1Mb)

A vertically scrolling shoot 'em up from Japan, which uses an interesting power-up method.

This action shoot 'em up from Japan contains blistering speed, high octane explosions and enemy bosses which fill a quarter of the screen. What's not to love? lol
The story fits the bill of any game of this sort - fly for no reason while billions of unnamed enemies are trying to blow you up. Fortunately, the enemies are largely weak and often help you by dropping supplies when they die.

.

.

The usual method of power-ups has been dispensed with here (a random box of goodies) and you're given the choice of three power ups, which rotate in a triangular pattern. These are shield, power and bombs.

You can either choose one power-up specifically, or fly into the center for a moment and receive all three plus bonus points. However, this may have the undesired effect of you accidentally nudging a power up you don't specifically need at that point, so attempt this with skill.

Its pace is blistering and the enemy waves are never monotonous. Frequently ships of larger size follow a few waves of smaller, easier ships to break up any monotony. Not all of them have to be destroyed - they fly away after a set time period, which reduces any "I just have to get this last one" frustration which sometimes happens in shooters.

.

.

To summarize - it looks good. It plays well. It sounds nice. The power up system is innovative and brings an extra level of play to the repetitious shoot, explode, wait. In short, its a very solid game which you'd do well to check out.

.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don’t usually include multiplayer games in this project; partly because of my reticence at playing online; (though I’m slowly overcoming that problem. I decided to include this in the project because it’s not like you’re actually competing against other human players (even though you are), it’s just feels like a very intelligent arcade space shooter.. The game has been around for a couple of years and is soon to have a commercial counterpart (to be released on Steam on the 17th Sept) called Mad balls Babo invasion.

Baboviolent 211.2Mb

BaboViolent 2 is a freeware game developed by the cool Canadian crew that makes up RndLabs. The game was released upon the world in October 2006 as a test of a network library. However, the fact that it was simply a test didn't deter the crowd that flocked to play it.

.

.

BV2 is a top down shooter where you control a "Babo," a red or blue orb that rolls around the screen with one of six weapons attached to it. The intuitive keyboard + mouse interface helps you get into the thick of the action as quick as possible. It's as simple as joining one of the many active servers and hitting 'F'. You are immediately dropped into the action and start tossing grenades and molotov cocktails at anything that moves while firing to stay alive.

.

.

The success of the game is due in large part to its very easy and immersive game play. However, game balance should also receive its due credit for the game's popularity. Damage settings, weapon ranges, firing rates, and med-kits have all been tweaked to provide wonderful balance. There is no killer combination that runs the show... anyone and everyone is a contender with whatever weapon they choose to master.

What really sets people above the rest in BV2 isn't the ability to kill but the ability to stay alive.

Game Features:

	Battle in 13 maps suited for 2 to 32 players.
	Try different game types like Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch
and Capture the Flag.

Re-volt works on my system (Win XP pro (32 bit) with service pack 3; what’s your platform? If you are unable to get Re-Volt to work, may I suggest you try one or more of the alternatives I've linked to. You will probably require DOSBox for most of them. I can't remember whether I used DOSBox when I first tested their suitability for posting and I don't have the time to recheck them at the moment them? None are large downloads so if you're not keen on using DOSBox, it may still be worth checking them to see if they work in Windows compatibility mode. :) (I hope you don't mind me adding some extra's to this thread Wizz?)

I posted some decent freeware, abandonware and free commercial alternatives (as well as some free online multiplayer and browser games in the Wheeled Games thread over a year ago. In particular, and similar to Re-Volt you could try Ignition or Death Valley.

Death Rally:

http://www.dos4free.dk/description/Death_Rally/

Ignition:

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/107

You’ll also find several commercial games linked via the Wheeled games thread as well as loads of browser games and a great online racer called Darkwind, which sees you racing cars armed with weapons in a post apocalyptic environment:

finally, here’s a great ‘retro’ rally game that I was going to include with this coming Sundays games. It’s not Colin McRae Rally, but for a game that’s around 16 years old it’s not bad. I actually like the retro look.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Network Q RAC Rally:

This is the first from a long series of similarly-named rally games - all based on the same rally championship.

There is not much to say about a rally racing game. You can drive around various rally tracks around the globe. Each rally has 30 drivers, 6 of which can be human (human drivers take turns). You can customize things like their name, age and country, purely for the sake of it. You have 5 cars to choose from: Toyota, Ford, Lancia, Mitsubishi and Subaru. There's more detailed info about each car in-game. You can also set up the tires for the car as weather conditions vary from rain to snow. Not having the appropriate type of tires will make your driving a lot harder.

During the race, just use the arrow keys (or whatever you defined in Options) to drive through the course from start to finish, being faster than the other drivers. You can see everything from the driver's seat. There is a speedometer on the bottom-left, minimap on the bottom-middle and a co-driver on the bottom-right that lets you know of whatever lies ahead. The tracks vary a lot in design, but they look pretty similar, and the scenario is pretty pixelly which doesn't help.

Although the physics are a bit off, the steering is very simplistic and you just bounce around when you hit the edge of the track, you still have to be careful as the car is prone to damage. Constantly driving at top speed, driving through bumps too fast, lots of braking, messing around with the gearbox, etc. will all damage different parts of the car and make it perform worse. You should pay special attention to the windshield though, since it's the only visible form of damage and if you keep hitting stuff and flipping the car over, it'll eventually break and you'll be kicked out of the rally.

If this is too much for you, you can just enable the indestructible mode in game options. You'll still sustain damage, but never lose because of it. You can repair damage after each race, as long as there's enough time to perform the repairs. Finally, so you don't lose your progress when you close the game, you can save the current rally from the main menu, and load it later. This is also useful in case you mess up and want to try again. You can also practice around on 3 different tracks (Easy, Medium and Hard) if you still haven't got the hang of it.

:( Not a good game for me! It won't run on my Vista HP SP 2.
Not in compatibility mode and not with other graphic resolutions.
There is only the start screen and then a black screen with a lovely blue frame. Before I could shut down with the task manager, came a note: Can't flip display buffers.

However, thanks wiz.

I downloaded and installed Re-volt with no problems. It plays well on my XP system except that it crashes anytime I try to enter the "Stunt Arena". Other than that I have had a good time with it. It is a fun game. In some racing games you can get so out of control that it is impossible to keep up with the leaders but, not in this game. Thanks Wizzard! :)

BTW.. it lists only XP for compatibility.

Today I have two games for everyone. The first game is a racing game titled Re-Volt. The second game is a Mech game but from a an overhead perspective titled Outbound. Without further ado:

Re-Volt

I don’t like racing games, it’s become clear to me. I don’t enjoy Gran Turismo, I don’t play Need For Speed, and I only truly played one racing game I enjoyed, Mario Kart. But now, I’ve found another game worthy of being so excellent, so refined and polished, that I can actually go on saying that I love this game. It’s entirely perfect in my eyes, and there couldn’t be a better racing game. That’s a opinion of course, but a opinion needs reasoning, and that’s my next step.

The first thing you’ll notice is the standard resolution of Re-Volt, at a low 640-480. Once you’ve made a visit to options, and you’ve set it all the way up to 1024-786, you’ll notice the beauty of this game. Reflective surfaces are everywhere they need to be, the clean floors of a grocery store, the sleek and shiny RC-cars, and the marble floors of a large museum. Effects are vibrant and colorful, not to mention pleasing to the eyes, everything from a flare impacting on another racer, or a oil puddle sending vehicles trailing off with oily skid marks, look perfect.

The vehicles in Re-volt aren’t exactly what you’d expect, instead of some Porsche that can speed over 200 MPH, you commandeer small RC cars that zoom around the interiors of various buildings. Although this might drive off the more “hardcore” gaming crowd with it’s initial childishness, missing this would be a foolish mistake. On harder difficulties, the computer racers are brutal and unforgiving, weapons you unleash on other vehicles are perfectly balanced and all serve a use, and there are even unlock able RC’s. Weaponry ranges from homing fireworks that you send after targeted enemies, rolling metal balls to speed down the path of oncoming opponents, and even a kamikaze like “self-detonation” weapon that’ll send nearby cars flying. Weapons aren’t merely here to be fired off in full blazing glory, each and every one of them has tactical purposes. Using oil-slicks in narrow doorways can force cars to run through the slippery mess, or maybe even using “self-detonation” to send other cars off the path. You’ll hardly find yourself bored in the various tracks that each offer another play method to perfect.

Sound is another joy. Your environment actually makes you feel small, like the little RC you are controlling, all provided by the echoing and humming of the large interiors. The exteriors are filled with the expected sounds, your RC grinds as it zooms across gravel, there’s a nice feeling of a Sunday afternoon as you race through a suburban neighborhood. My favorite atmospheric sounds though, is the little buzzing your RC creates. It’s a subtle yet perfect touch, and it never seems to grow annoying or repetitive. Always, that buzzing keeps me coming back.

Overall, I can’t give Re-Volt any negatives, most likely the only problem would be the loading length. Even on my high end PC, it took about 20 seconds to load a certain level. Another problem would be a incredibly rare bug, where the loading screen flips sideways from some reason, (The game runs normally though.) But these are all minor problems, and won’t detract from Re-Volt’s final score.

I stand by my 5, you can’t keep a good racer back. Once you know you’ve found a racing game with merits, you’ll play it for quite some time. Re-Volt is a addictive racer that will most likely please you, and if it doesn’t, well that’s your taste in gaming. Despite it’s large size, just wait for the download, it’ll be worth it.

That large size he is talking about is only 58mb. Extremely small by today's games standards. Though this is listed at abandonia, be glad in knowing that it doesn't require dosbox =D

Download:
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/908/Re-Volt.html

________________________________________________________________________________

Outbound

Enter a world where combat has emerged, and its time for you to fight against the enemy, to save your allies from sure destruction, using your robot suit to clear the path home for them. Enter the world of Outbound, where your enemy is gunning for you and unless you fight back, you will be a steaming pile of ash.

The story of Outbound described in game is as follows. "It is the fourth millenium, the old Federation of star systems has broken down, and power in the inner colonies has been usurped by the Centrists, a corrupt and amoral military coalition. The remnants of the Federation force are trapped between the main battle fleet of the Centrists and the distant havens of the Outer Colonies." So as a member, of the elite force that is part of the federation, your mission is to help the trapped forces get back to safety. Kind of simple premise, but at least some effort went into the actual story line.

Controls in the game are easy, move with directional keys, fire with ctrl key and use 1, 2, 3 buttons to change between your weapons, you will find different weapons and power ups in your different missions across different planets. Each one has a set of objectives you must accomplish before you can move onto the next mission. You will face though a lot of opposition from the Centrists, as they have deployed their forces on many planets, so you will have to destroy anyone who gets in your way.

Graphics in the game are nicely done, and look good, the environments have some similarities but with color scheme changes. Nevertheless, it all looks good in the end and even with multiple enemies on screen, there is not much if any slowdown. Which is good to see, you'll be dealing with lots of enemies trying to stop you, and it's a blast to see many enemies coming at you, trying to gun you down.

Which brings me to my next point, with the many enemies there are, it's given the game a high challenge, even the first level may take you a couple of tries before you can beat it. You only get 2 lives at the beginning and with multiple enemies it can be hard at first to face off against such odds. Nevertheless, it should not take most people too long to get used to the controls and really raise havoc.

If your looking for a game to give you a rush and be challenging and with a little futuristic feeling to, check out Outbound.

Today I have a Zombie shooter for everyone. If you'll remember back a few weeks ago I pointed everyone in the direction of Detoss Law, 10800 Zombies is clearly inspired by that game, but made the game with more blocky graphics. I really enjoyed this game and recommend it to any fan of zombie shooters or Detoss Law.

There's not much to say about the game other than run around and kill the zombies, so without further ado.....

Hi StevieD,

Check out the games synopsis which is on the forums front page as a sticky and also the Schmup's thread that you'll find in the games discussion forums (you can get to it indirectly via the free games synopsis). I'm busy right now so don't have time to find the link, but will later if you haven't replied.

I'm sure there are a few R-Type freebies amongst all the games we've posted over the last year. (S-Type for example, plus I’ve listed all the space arientated games you can download from XTC Abandonware. You’ll probably require DOSBox for a lot of them to work, but not all. I used to love R-Type and played it so much my hands used to hurt.

You can get R-type for free now. There are several sites you can download it from. The following is a decent one, though you will get a window popping up that asks for donations. the download is free:
