well, it does as advertised-
after unzipping & placing the exe on my thumbdrive it took about 3 min to index the drive (2gb)contents, & left that in a new folder of its' creation in same main directory I farmed it out to-
after that a click will launch it & brings its' search box- half second to find that query-
I'm happy- :)
(and slightly paranoid, so prior to trying....'multiple scanners' tells me it is safe for me to install )

I have been looking for ages for a program like that. :)

So far VX Search Pro seems to do a good job in finding things on a large-capacity thumb drive, but a portable app on that same drive might be the ultimate solution.
Btw 'Everything' still is my number 1 app when searching NTFS drives.
Please let us know your findings about using 'Dropout' on thumb drives.
Thanks.

Ran into this one, looks interesting to me ,( I hate trying to find those things I store on my thumbdrive), and am going to give it a try later this weekend:

http://dropout.codeplex.com/

Project Description
Dropout is a portable application that makes it easy to search your USB, Dropbox or any other directory. Written in C# it uses the Lucene full text search library and IFilter's to search the content of your files. Simply place the executable in the directory you want to search and it does the rest.

Overview
Have you ever want to find files on your USB or in your Dropbox and Windows Search just doesn't find? Windows Search only searches file types it know about so that can rule out lots of different files. Dropout using the follow steps to index your files:
Uses IFilters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IFilter) to index files windows know about
If you don't have a IFilter for PDF's it uses iTextSharp to extract the text (http://sourceforge.net/projects/itextsharp/
Looks at the start of the file to see if it text or binary. If it is text it indexes the content.

http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/01/why-we-desperately-need-a-new-and-better-google-2/
We ended up using instead a web-search tool called Blekko. It’s a new technology and is far from perfect; but it is innovative and fills the vacuum of competition with Google (and Bing).
The problem is that content on the internet is growing exponentially and the vast majority of this content is spam. This is created by unscrupulous companies that know how to manipulate Google’s page-ranking systems to get their websites listed at the top of your search results. When you visit these sites, they take you to the websites of other companies that want to sell you their goods. (The spammers get paid for every click.) This is exactly what blogger Paul Kedrosky found when trying to buy a dishwasher. He wrote about how he began Googleing for information…and Googleing…and Googleing. He couldn’t make head or tail of the results. Paul concluded that the “the entire web is spam when it comes to major appliance reviews”.
http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/23/blekko-duckduckgo/
DuckDuckGo search results will now be powered by Blekko
http://mashable.com/2011/05/17/blekko-flipboard-deal/
http://mashable.com/2011/02/07/blekko-queries/
Blekko’s alternative, human-curated search engine now averages 1 million queries a day and between 10 to 15 queries per second just three months after launch,
http://blekko.com/ws/+/press-articles (click read more)
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/08/technology/08ping.html?_r=2
Google led me to 1.9 million pieces of advice, both good and suspect.
But also among the search results were how-to articles like one saying that if I sipped tea brewed from ground celery seeds or corn silk, the stone would pass within hours. My laughter didn’t reduce the pain.
http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/11/blekko-launches/
Ignore for a minute the awkward name: Blekko.
there’s a new search engine in town that’s got a fresh approach to weed out the ever-proliferating junk and spam sites polluting search results.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2371827,00.asp
At this point, there do not seem to be any "featured" or paid search results, or advertising.
http://blekko.com/ws/+/privacy
No Facebook:. This feature disables all of blekko’s integration with Facebook.
.No Ads: This feature disables display of all ads on blekko.com. Also, blekko will not send any information identifiable to you (such as, IP Address, user agent string and search keywords) to a third party for advertising or marketing purposes.
Always Use HTTPS on blekko.com:. This feature helps make communications on blekko.com more secure and private, for example making it more difficult for other users to view your blekko.com activity on an unsecured wireless network.
HTTPS Preferred®: This feature helps make links to search results on blekko.com more secure. If you have this option selected, and if blekko has determined that the link you are visiting has an https equivalent, blekko will link to the https version of the website. This makes it more difficult for other users to view your network activity on an unsecured wireles network.

Yossi, I usually just do a google search with "site:giveawayoftheday.com" in the front. You will also get stuff from their freeware library/forums, and I do agree, a search for only software would be a good thing to add.

I am trying to find a way to search the archive of old giveaways so I can see the comments that were posted.

So far I have only been able to get to old giveaways by selecting the date from the calendar shown on the GAOTD homepage. Searching for a program using the "Search for Software on our site" returns links to the program, but not to its original giveaway page with the comments.

If it is possible to get to these pages by searching, please tell me how. If not, I think it would be a good feature to add.

Kiwi search engine to take on Google (Kiwi = New Zealand)
Pingar, presents search results in a PDF document instead of listing links to external sites as Google or Bing does.

“It takes the browsing out of browsing,” Pingar managing director Peter Wren-Hilton said. “For example, if a user typed in ‘what investment opportunities exist in Wellington?’ they would probably get back a five page PDF document.”
now do you think this be good do you like this results in a PDF ?

Several months ago (- may be as many as 5 or 6 months ago)a program was offered that enhanced movie frames frame by frame. Side by side before and after comparison photos where shown showing the degree of improvement that could be expected. The program received high positive marks when it was offered on GOTD.

I have a need for such a program. If I could locate the pgm I would gladly purchase it. Can anyone help me? Perhaps someone knows of a quality program with similar functions.

*ptff*
Great! They don't let me use the most important feature in the 30 day free trial. (Search partial words)
ex. I want to find anything ending in "ly"
If anyone out there knows of a good application that will search the text on my screen, please let me know!

It's called Hilitext.
I've spent hours searching for something that will do this. I've finally found it but... It's not free.
Please contact them and see if you can get them to put it up here. It would be greatly appreciated. In the mean time, I'm going to use their 30-day free trial...

Here's the link to the software: http://www.fanix.com/hilitext.html
Thanks for all the cool GAOTD's!

I've heard that lately Spybot, which I also have used for years, is no longer as good as it was. The program now being recommended on Malware sites is SuperAntiSpyware.

Free version available:

http://www.superantispyware.com/

At last a new version
---------------------

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behavior to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer. SpyBot-S&D allows you to exclude selected cookies, programs or extensions from being reported, allowing you to prevent false positive messages for items that you dont want to be alerted of every time. It can even scan your download directory for files that have been downloaded, but not yet installed, allowing you to detect unwanted programs before you even install them. SpyBot produces a detailed and easy to understand report before it deletes any files and allows you to deselect any item that you do not want to be processed. In addition, a recovery feature allows you to restore your settings if needed.

Thanks for trying. Even if it does work with firewall turned off, don't think I'd feel good about using it that way. I'm going to download and re-install it fresh "tomorrow" before I give up unless someone else comes up with a good idea.

Gotta be up to grab a last-one-on-display laptop super-bargain when the store opens at 10am in the morning, so I have to pack it in for a few hours. Found it by computer inventory at a store on one side of town, but it is at their other store 20 miles across town and it was 30 min. to closing. They would not hold it for me or let me charge it by phone. Took the salesman's name and told him I would come looking for him personally if it is gone when I get there!
