http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=6

It's good stuff and I think any computer that can run it shouldn't be without it, if a PC is powerful enough to run Windows 2000 or later OS then it can run Sandboxie with no problem. Sandboxie is no more strenuous than any other basic background service in Windows, when you understand what Sandboxie does and how it works this result is understandable and intuitive. Even so, so much power for so little overhead is astonishing and represents everything that software could and should be. Even if used rarely it's so light on system resources that it almost doesn't seem to exist on a system, it's also intensely configurable. It's useful for many reasons (I've used it more for testing software than for anything else) and nearly all of it's deepest features are available in the free/unregistered version. To use it you just right-click on something and select "Run Sandboxed".

Nothing you do in a sandbox touches your operating system, all registry and disk activity is directed to a sandboxed folder, so that when you are done installing and testing something (or browsing and getting infected with malware or toolbars or whatever) you can delete the folder and all traces will be gone from your system. For example, if something tries to write to the Windows folder it does so in a fake windows folder sitting within your sandbox folder, and writes registry changes to a virtual registry on a per-sandbox basis. Removing the effects of intrusive software or malware is really as simple as deleting a folder!

The beauty is that it's not a virtual machine, all it does it redirect registry and file system activity, so that most things generally run just as well sandboxed as not. You can make sandboxes temporary or permanent depending on your needs, and having multiple sandboxes with different configurations is very handy. If you run an existing program sandboxed it simply imports the current state and setup of that program and proceeds from there, the results of which can be kept in the sandbox henceforth or deleted at the end of your session. If you forbid a sandbox network access it also serves as a perfect firewall against the software running in it (again, great for testing), and it's basic control window functions as a simple task manager so that you see everything running under it's control.

Since pointing an unrestricted web browser at the internet is so dangerous these days I think most people would do well to keep their browsing sandboxed, or set up multiple sandboxes for various online and offline tasks. Sandboxes are little more than folders with specific Sandboxie rules applied to them.

I highly recommend setting up Sandboxie for friends and family who are ignorant of technical stuff, to protect their systems and make fixing their problems a breeze. However, the problem with Sandboxie is that it requires some steady use to be able to train it to perform all that it needs to on a particular system, and one must learn how to 'recover' things from the sandbox to the real system (like saved items and downloads), which could make it a bit of work to set up for others or to train them to use it.

Sandboxie's all about preventing changes to your system, but it must be said that Sandboxie doesn't stop anything from running unless you tell it to (and the various access restrictions are highly configurable), it's nature is to let something run and think it has control of your system, but you are in control, totally.

Just bringing this back to the top, as I'm thinking of getting rid of BufferZone and replacing it with Sandboxie Free version, which seems much more straightforward and has a good tutorial. Of course, I haven't worked with a sandbox program before, and I see where Graylox noted that Returnil... has a steep learning curve? Maybe BufferZone is like that, too, but so far I'm thinking that if Sandboxie is any easier to use, it would be a better bet for a beginner like me.

Anyone have any other pros and/or cons on sandbox programs?

Had to check their wording carefully - that they say Minimum system requirements FOR Windows 7 32 bit - doesn't imply support for 64 bit.

- on a side note, I disputed with Stardock about their minimum requirements for a game GalCiv I. https://store.stardock.com/product.aspx?productid=ESD-SDS-W224

It is listed as:

System Requirements
Minimum:

    * Windows 98 / Me / 2000 / XP

When they say "Minimum System Requirements" - it should mean "This or Better".

(While you can download GALCIV 1 - you cannot even install the software to run under compatibility mode)

Removing the word "Minimum" and leaving it as "System Requirements" would exclude Vista and Win 7 as compatible or supported platforms.

They disagreed.

Likewise be careful when they say the software has a "Minimum system requirement" of XP, Vista or Win7 (although unstated, they may not include 64 bit in the supported platforms)

Would be nice if software publishers would have some consistent standards.

Today’s game is called Sandbox of God. Sandbox of God is a simulation game where you take man and wildlife through many different eras. The goal of the game is to see what kind of Earth you can create by changing the order of different events.

In the first era, you start with planting trees, striking with lightning, meteor strike, earthquake, tornado, introduction of man, introduction of rabbits, a drought, and rain. Depending on what order you select the events, there are several different outcomes for each era and ultimately the end of the game. The game ranks you on how evil or good you are by the order you select and their outcomes. It is very easy to be evil and I have yet to be defined by good. There are times where the rabbits and humans pray to you for divine intervention, you can interfere or let them decide their own fate. These decisions affect your score and their IQ.

The game saves your progress, because once you have fulfilled every possible scenario in your checklist, you are given an unlockable bonus. Overall, I give this game a 9/10 because of its high replay value and its fresh look on God games. This is the first game I’ve come across where planting a tree, using a tornado, and then raining makes a forest of trees. The game requires thought and that is why I think it’s a good game. At 5.84mb, I think everyone should at least give it a shot.

Good morning everyone! :)

Problems:

I just bought Sandboxie upon recommendation from my friend (Fubar - thanks!) I'll be speaking with him (hopefully,) later in the day, but for now I'd like some information if anyone can provide it please.

Problems:

Installed Sandboxie and read ALL documentation, but it doesn't seem to address these issues;

I still don't fully understand how it works;

I'm running all browsers permanently through the sandbox, as recommended;

I use an external downloader (FDM) which has always been wonderful, however it now launches immediately into the sandbox, delivering the downloaded software there.

It's then very confusing to locate the zip files in the sandbox so I can run them.

When I try to highlight FDM in the sandbox list to remove it permanently, it only stays highlighted for a second, not giving me enough time to do anything with any files.

I'd like to be able to download and install outside of the sandbox, but run the software inside the sandbox, until I'm sure that it's ok, then I'll move it out of the sandbox for future launches.

I am definitely not right clicking on my FDM to tell it to run inside the sandbox.

Now I'm assuming that the reason this is happening, is because the browser (running inside the sandbox,) takes control of FDM and therefore launches it automatically inside the sandbox.

If anyone can please explain the method by which Sandboxie handles such issues, I'd be very grateful. And even more grateful if they can also explain:

How to prevent the browser taking control of FDM;

How to run McAfee SiteAdvisor (connection issue since installing Sandboxie,) inside a sandboxed browser.

I'm so annoyed that I missed both yesterday's game and other software and can't seem to get either today, while I futzed around with trying to understand where the heck the zip files went.

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated, thank you!
