Very easy! Just look at Bubby's post above - right below his name it says "PM this User". Click on it!

However, you probably have to be logged on at the time.

From our viewpoint - it would be useful if such a button would change to "Reported" once someone had sent the message. Not that I am complaining - but sometimes you can get many messages reporting the spam... making the reports almost 'spamlike' :P

A "report this post" button would be nice. One that would flag it for the mods, making it easily visible to them. I am just recommending this as a possible feature for whenever the forums are updated. For now, I can easily PM Bubby or WR (since they are the only mods I can remember most of the time. No offense meant for everyone else.)

I'm fairly certain that those who post spam don't care about forum rules. In any case - all of their posts get deleted - and their accounts get blocked/deleted on their first offense.

If you come across spam - just PM a mod to have it removed.

I always send a PM to Bubby or another staff member when I find these jerks. There should be a "report" option. It would make it easier for the users to help the mods in cases like this.

Rules For These Forums
# 8.Shill posting (including affiliate links, or games/promotional links where the poster benefits by points or dollars etc by getting more clicks) and spam/commercial advertising is definitely not permitted.
# 9.Users who post in these forums, only as an opportunity to promote their own commercial site, will probably result in all their posts being removed. If you wish to advertise, consider offering your products as a daily giveaway instead.

Just like with the Stickr situation, I think part of the problem is allowing people to post anonymously. The objectionable language I saw was in the Suggestions section (where people can post anonymously) for the program Registry Defragmentation 9.2, given away on 3/28/2010. It appears to have been removed, unless there's something after that that I've missed.

Well, so much for the efficacy of these so called ‘filters’ some folks here occationally blame for nixing their comments (nothing personal). I was under the impression that alerts were created to automatically filter out posts containing four letter words deemed inappropriate. I was also under the impression that there needn’t be a dedicated 24/7 moderator to clear every comment.

Although it was a noble idea the suggestions venue came about because some people were highly critical of the previous ratings system. In the time since that change was enacted there have been few GOTD visitors who actually use the thing. If anything one can now argue that it’s been more trouble than it’s worth. Like it or not, the fact remains that prior to that change a comment like that would never have made it to public viewing. Perhaps the time has come to reassess its worth.

I agree; there shouldn't be any of that kind of language on the comments page, or even here in the forums. I don't want to read that mess, and I'm not a child. I certainly wouldn't want any of my young children/grandchildren (if I had any) to be exposed to that.

Yes, I was appalled by the language today. I don't understand how the moderator could have allowed such language through. My children often read the comments while I'm reading them. Thankfully they didn't see todays.

Rules Specific to the Giveaway Forums

If suggesting a program or game for giveaway - use the correct topic - please don't start a new one. Ignoring this will likely get your suggestion deleted. (Santa only has time to read the one topic)

No posting personal email addresses or contact details. We know where you live. ;)

No warez related posts or requesting/supplying activation/registration keys for giveaways. (including linking to sites that promote the use or distribution of warez)

If the post is about activating a giveaway - mention which program you are activating. XP or Vista? Any error messages you get. (Check "General" rule 1 Below)

If suggesting or recommending a program - post a link to the developers/original download site. Links to general download sites or mirrors may be out of date or go down. No direct linking (to executables or images etc) - many sites consider "direct linking" as bandwidth theft (Read: So You Have Decided to Hotlink and Steal Bandwidth). For programs and downloads, users should always land on a download page so they can see what they are downloading. (The link shouldn't start the download automatically). ** Posts that ignore this rule may be edited or removed entirely. **

Time limited Special offers - if the expiry date/time is known - please include in the topic subject.

Do not ask how to install/transfer/copy/backup giveaway software after the giveaway has finished. The only supported way to install giveaway software is by running the supplied setup and/or activate programs prior to the giveaway period expiring. Giveaways may be rerun periodically. If you "want it now" and like the software enough, you should show your support to the developers and purchase or register the software.

Shill posting (including affiliate links, or games/promotional links where the poster benefits by points or dollars etc by getting more clicks) and spam/commercial advertising is definitely not permitted. Posts suspected or known as such will be removed or updated to reflect this fact.

Users who post in these forums, only as an opportunity to promote their own commercial site, will probably result in all their posts being removed. If you wish to advertise, consider offering your products as a daily giveaway instead.

General Forum Etiquette

Before Requesting help or posting - please read the program instructions or try google first (you would be surprised how many questions are answered after a 5 second visit to google.com). Also Google is helpful in finding articles to explain concepts you don't understand, or conversely leave you even more despondent and confused.

Check if a related topic already exists and add to that - don't create another topic. Lots of little topics scroll off the front page faster and get forgotten. The big topics get bumped with each new (on topic) question and reply. Stick with the strength.

When starting a topic - try to use a subject that describes the issue or question. Topics with generic titles of "Question" or "I can't Activate" are more likely to be ignored. If it relates to a program or giveaway - put the program name in the subject so "Rule 2" can apply.

Keep posts on topic. If you want to discuss a different matter or ask an unrelated question - start a new topic. (Thread Hijackings may be deleted)

Posting in all CAPITALS, is considered shouting and rude. Such posts will probably be deleted.

The forum rules - brief and to the point.

There is an expectation of courteous and friendly behavior and language from all users in these forums.
Users of all ages, walks of life, cultural backgrounds and computing skills visit and contribute in these forums. Not all users have english as a first language.

We exist to discuss software, share tips and help one another.
Discussion and comments on Politics, Religion, or other topics that result in tears and yelling don't belong here. There are other websites that want to hear your political or religious views.

These rules may evolve over time - but the general feel and purpose will remain the same. Any comments on these - feel free to PM me.

"Michelle is right. There needs to a sticky and not just because of blocking. Most forums use a sticky for rules with a subject line in all caps so fewer will miss it. Something like "PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING" is how it's done on most forums."

That's true, but if you break one or more rules on the forum in that Please Read Before Posting site you get banned from that site. It's what it is there for. I just thought it would be easier rather than having to go over every rule for each user where the rules might be a little different.

For instance this is only the second forum I have ever been to that didn't allow curse words of any kind. I just think it would be a lot easier making a sticky.

I'm not going to drag it on and on if they don't want to make a sticky. It's up to them.

Hi Lee, hope you and your family are doing well, happy easter everyone.

re: Phelix download. I'd say that's fine. It's not like you are linking to something illegal or wrong in any way. If the developer wanted to host a copy of their own application to giveaway - there is nothing wrong with that.

If you were linking to someone who was hosting other (expired) giveaways and including codes or instructions on bypassing the conditions of use, that would be a different matter entirely - because they would have no legal permission to give away that software.

Michelle is right. There needs to a sticky and not just because of blocking. Most forums use a sticky for rules with a subject line in all caps so fewer will miss it. Something like "PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING" is how it's done on most forums.

Recently I wanted to post a link to Phelix which was still available free on the developer's site after the give away expired, for Bobby who had trouble registering. The one on the developer's site was even a newer version. But I didn't know (and still don't know) if that was OK or not because it was after the give away.

I think if it ever got to the stage of a user being blocked from the site - they would already know that they are overstepping the boundaries of acceptable behavior.

It's not likely to be an outcome that would occur completely by suprise.

Stuff that will very probably get you blocked.

Abusive behavior and Offensive language.

Continuing to repeat posts (spam) when your previous similar posts have been removed.

Posts related to illegal activities.

Personal attacks against other users

Trolling/Baiting (posting only to start an argument).

Users are more likely to get blocked when the first posts they make after registering fall into the above categories.

In the past I have noticed that the users who were blocked started their brief "career of abuse" less than one hour after registering for the forums. To them, it's like "Sport for idiots", but after a few posts - the point to their posts becomes very clear.

Well I thought someone else was doing it.

The person blocked yesterday was writing some nasty profanity, I did warn them, they just don't wish to read warnings.

Nice to see you again young lady!

I was wondering being that you are blocking people now if you could make a sticky of the Rules & Guidelines we have to follow. I know some people may have saw them including me but some people haven't. So could you please create a Rules & Guidelines sticky? Thank you.

Sigh ... I know I signed off .. but one more time..

I would give all that I have to speak to those same family members of my own. My beloved grandmothers are both gone 2. My daughter Brandy died before she reached her first birthday. 3. I am fighting cancer for the second time m'self...having already lost every female member of my family to the ravages of that disease...but because of my faith, I have not shed a single tear over the situation or lost my own quirky sense of humor. 4. My father, a decorated WW2 medic, died years ago; my step-dad, also a Navy vet, died last year of Alzheimer's.

We have common ground, you and I.

Sarcastic remarks like 'holier-than-thou,' whining and moaning' and 'overly sensitive' are childish and uncalled for; moreover, they have no bearing on this subject. If the remarks were off-the-cuff, they would not have continued for several posts. It went beyond humor after the first post.

Those of us that Believe _did_not_ start this discussion in a software forum, and although we stand by your right to your own beliefs, or lack thereof, we do not have to stand by while someone bashes our own set of beliefs, whatever they may be. As I originally pointed out, this simply was not the place for what should have been a private discussion between y'all. Agreed?

Wolven .. I AM sorry to hear of your Mom's battle with cancer. I hope she has your sense of humor, because humor is the best weapon in that fight.

I am also sorry to learn of the loss of your father in the course of military service. As a Navy veteran, I mourn the sacrifice he made for freedom's sake; as the descendant of generations of veterans, it is my wish that no further generations suffer what we have experienced.

We have common ground, despite our philosophical differences. I would like to go forward from this point on good terms.

Moderator, kind sir, would you delete the discussions pertaining to religion so we can end this?

Now, once again...AX2USN signing off on this subject. It's over.

To add to that, Bobby...
Ask yourself..."Would I say what it is I am about to post to my Grandmother? My 3 year old Daughter or Son? My Mother or Father?"
To be completely honest with you - I would give all that I have to speak for a moment with any of them,..but I am left to say it mostly to their memory.

1. My grandmother passed away a few years ago.
2. My daughter (only child) did not have the opportunity to reach her third birthday - Not even her first.
3. My mother is seriously ill with cancer at this moment.
4. My father died in the armed services in the early 90's.

Were I overly sensitive, I feel that I would have greater cause to complain here than those who are worried over an off-the-cuff remark about the Pope. After all, I do/did know MY family far better than you know OUR 'God'.

I did not appreciate that comment, as it raised several sad memories for me. The difference being, I am not going to complain about it.

Now the fun has been laid to rest, I suggest the whining and moaning also join it and you all get the topic back on track.

...away into the sunset.

OMG. I just noticed people are still hung up on the religion thing.

I was the person who originally mentioned "no religious wars" - and it was immediately mistaken to actually mean something about religion.

That was not at all what I meant.

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/698?replies=60#post-3871

A religious war (in the context of forums) also means when you get two or more camps who lay seige to each other and argue their sides point of view - and the argument goes on forever. If you want an example make a pro Microsoft comment in a Mac or Linux forum, stand back and wait for the pack of wolves start to circle.

Suitable topics are Windows vs Linux, xbox vs playstation, (in Australia) Holden vs Ford. The main requirement is nobody should listen to any arguments, just present you own arguments repeatedly and insist you are right, everyone else is wrong, because you are right.

Perhaps there are more similarities to actual religions than I first thought.

Actual posts pushing or bashing religions will be deleted and the poster instructed to find a more appropriate forum for such topics. Don't give me religion - "We is Software".
