As happens, when the teams split, there were differences, resulting that there isn't even a mention, let alone a link, on the Glest site to MegaGlest! Like many, I didn't know about MegaGlest until I stumbled on it elsewhere very recently.

By comparison, the MegaGlest site has links to both Glest and Glest AE development progress page (presently on 0.3.3 pre-alpha).

Basically, I think a lot of people considered that Glest development stopped a couple of years ago, as Glest AE is being developed painstakingly slowly, and without much publicity. We may have to wait a few more years (or more again!) before Glest AE comes anywhere near completion!

I'm glad to have found MegaGlest and now posted for it, as many Glest fans might not know of MegaGlest's existence! It's very good that MegaGlest is an ongoing development, as some considered Glest had become a bit 'stale' and needing enhancement! MegaGlest is indeed very much for now that much needed enhancement! :)

MegaGlest (175Mb)

MegaGlest split as an offshoot from Glest early last year (you can find Glest posted HERE). It is of course heavily based on its parent Glest but has its own significant differences in comparison to Glest, having five new and additional tribes/races to play with. It’s a large 3D real-time strategy game and MegaGlest is indeed huge; in scope, gameplay and in nature.

You play in control of one of seven different tribes/races; Tech, Magic, Norsemen, Romans, Indians, Egyptians or Persians. The environs are suitably large too, though of various sizes. There are 14 different settings to play in, and you’ll find these to be very detailed, as are your unit models. The terrain features large plains and fields, with rivers, mountains, seas, or cliffs.

The game is about resource management, and the different factions have different needs, be this for energy, food, gold, housing, stone and wood as examples. Once settlements are established and being maintained well, you train units to fight and explore. The means to meet these resources may differ between factions.

Each faction has its own units and buildings, and unique abilities to that faction. Winning battles will depend heavily on your strategy as to where and in what strength you place your units, and how you use your factions’ abilities to your best favour and result. You won't get bored as there is always plenty to do and you will find combat against the game's AI testing!

There are of course similar commercial games, but usually you have to buy additional expansion packs to get new races and buildings, etc. With MegaGlest, as well as it being open source and free, you also get access to all of the tribes and their respective buildings! MegaGlest is a great alternative to lashing out on commercial expansion packs and part filling a hard drive!

My only (very small!) gripe is that Aztecs aren’t included (as yet!) in the main game. There are however a very large number of extra factions available as user mods (including Aztecs!) either through Wiki or the MegaGlest forum. Being user mods, these may differ in quality re: building and unit modelling detailing. Some scenario mods for Glest will also work with MegaGlest, eg The Three Towers scenario. You can get dwarves and elves as faction mods for MegaGlest too, so by combining scenario mods and faction mods, there’s a very wide choice of gameplay available! There are tileset (eg seasons, etc) mods and a large selection of additional maps available for added replay value. A map editor is provided to mod maps too. You can also customize tech trees for different combinations of units, resources and building availability.

MegaGlest is complete with tutorials and three beginner scenarios - these will be difficult enough for beginners, before proceeding to the main game proper! You can also play online as a multi-player game, and it’s especially suited to coop play. Stay around in the lobby for a while when you logon and there will be other online players! Or you can play against the game’s AI or friends over a LAN!

Offline and single player, you’ll be playing against your computer, again using the game’s AI. This AI may vary slightly if you play some of the custom mods. You can move your camera view position freely, and there are details such as real-time shadows and particle effects, transparency, lighting and fog 3D effects. MegaGlest also features many new tilesets, 2 more AI players and cross-platform multiplayer support. You can now even change the AI’s resource multiplier factor to make the game easier or more difficult to beat!

The graphics are excellent and there’s good music too. The scenery is great too, but it's the extensive game's mod options that really win the day for MegaGlest. It’s available for Windows and Linux, and the source code is available to use with other OSs.

By way of history, work seemed to have stopped on Glest in 2008, though a new Glest advanced games engine is apparently proceeding slowly. MegaGlest has gone forward with the emphasis on getting things working quickly, but it is still possible that the team split between Glest AE and MegaGlest might mend at some time in the future!

If you’ve tried Glest, I shouldn’t need to say more as this extends on from the best of Glest. If you haven’t tried either, then MegaGlest should be a major priority download!

All in all it’s a brilliant and extremely well worth playing hunk of a game in the very very best of senses!

Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tiQH7UV-5Y

These two games were recommended to me by thenameipicked. They are both great games by students from Digipen. In Sea of Chaos you control a ship and blow up other ships. NanoTerra is a real time strategy with elements from Pikmin and Starcraft.

Sea of Chaos

Sea of Chaos is a nice short and fun game where you control a ship and blow up all your enemies with cannons and machine guns. You also have a harpoon gun to drag around other ships but I never used it. After completing levels you earn upgrades to make your ship even more powerful. In most levels there are allies to help you. The controls are also very easy to use. It's quite fun if you want to play a game where you just blow stuff up, recommended.

In an age where violence rules the seas, there is a vast ocean that divides the land. Powerful countries have formed due to their advancements in ship technology, but despite that, many smaller countries lead a more simple life in the open seas. It is common to find traveling merchants and mercenaries throughout the land. In "Sea of Chaos", control your ship to fight for survival.

Screenshots:
From Digipen, Fraps didn't work for this game...

Controls:
W (or Arrow Up) - Set Speed Up
S (or Arrow Down) - Set Speed Down
A (or Arrow Left) - Turn Left
D (or Arrow Right) - Turn Right

L Button - Use Current Weapon
Space - Switch Current Weapon
Caps Lock (or Numpad 0)- Check Allies Status

R Button - Manage Camera/Look Around
Scroll Wheel - Zoom Camera In and Out

Download (37.5 MB):

https://www.digipen.edu/?id=1170&proj=496

NanoTerra

NanoTerra is a real time strategy game that combines elements from Pikmin with elements from Starcraft. You control Queens who have the ability to attack opponents and order nanites to gather resources. There are three types of queens, red beats blue, blue beats green, green beats red. You also have a base that is used drop off resources and produce new queens. By gathering 3 resources of one color you create a new queen of that color. White resources give you 25 nanites instead. To win the game you must destroy all enemy bases while protecting yours. But bases are only vulnerable when producing a new queen. This game is great but there are only 2 levels and no story mode.

NanoTerra is an RTS that combines the fast-paced, chaotic combat of Starcraft with the massive groups, and simple resource system of Pikmin. The game minimizes base management and unit organization, allowing for intense action rarely seen in modern strategy games. For RTS fans waiting for the next Starcraft, this game fills the void and introduces brand new strategy experiences. Plus, with 8-player multiplayer, a physics-enhanced battle system, and varied combat tactics, NanoTerra could be the biggest hit of next year!.

Controls:
Right Click - Issue orders depending on area or target.

A - Attacks an enemy unit
D - Activates a defensive orb, making the Queen invulnerable. Slowly kills the Queen's Nanites while in use.
F - Transports the Queen to a position in the world. Takes time to charge before the Queen is transported. Kills some of the Queen's Nanites when used.
G - Gathers a resources. Each resource requires a certain number of available Nanites to be gathered.
M - Moves to the given location.
R - Returns resources to the Base.
S - Stops the Queen's current action.
U - Deals massive damage against an Enemy unit costs Nanites to use.
Esc - Exits the game and returns to Windows

Download (18.4 MB):
Note: The shortcut in the start menu don't work. Run CORE.exe where you installed the game instead.

Here’s Sundays games. The first is a slots type game. I don’t usually post gambling games; for some reason I have an aversion to them, but as it’s a personal thing here are a couple that I thought you gamblers may like. No reel money (get it, lol) is used when playing, lol.. I’ve also included a roulette table to complete gamblers corner. I was going to add some card games such as black jack, but decided to leave those for another day.

You’ll find a great anime platformer called Akuji the Demon as well as a FPS game that’s unusual in that its all in black & white. Finally I added a game called Kaiser, only because it was on the same download page as the roulette table, lol

Akuji the Demon (2.52Mb)

Although a short game with little replayability I though this would be a nice addition to today’s collection. The graphics are excellent and the game play flows easily. A game for everyone. There’s an excellent game called Akuji the heartless that was released for the Playstation back in 1998 and is available as a ROM. I will be starting up a ROM section just as soon as I collect my thoughts. As was pointed out to me by wizard, a lot of the ROM downloads that you can easily find on the net are illegal, so I need to tread carefully as I don’t want to be posting anything but genuine freebies.

Here’s a review of Akuji the Demon by Kon-Tiki

Have you ever wondered why, at the end of games, evil is never destroyed, but always gets sealed up? Well, Akuji gives the answer. If they were destroyed, how would they be able to get back out and take revenge?

This revenge is what this game is all about. You play as the demon Akuji, who had been terrorizing a land until a hero defeated him, sealed him away and divided his demonic powers into nine balls. The demon set his mind on revenge and has to break out of the dark dungeon he's been sealed in, gathering his lost powers to eventually defeat the hero and regain his true form.

The story might sound like it'd promise gore, gloom and guts, but that's far from true. The graphics are bright and colourful, resembling those from old SNES games. The characters are all pretty cute, as if they jumped out of a kid's cartoon. They also provide constant variation, so you'll never get bored of your surroundings. Even within the same areas, there are details that change from room to room, making exploring a feast for the eyes.

Akuji's music, on the contrary, is fairly poor. There are two songs that constantly loop, and that's it. Luckily, those two songs stay in the background all the time, so it won't bother you much. In fact, it fills a gap of silence that'd otherwise be disturbing. Sound effects, on the other hand, are perfect for the game and often give clues as to what's happening around you while you can focus on what lays right ahead of you.

Gameplay itself is pretty straightforward. All you need are the cursor keys and Z, X and C. C isn't even necessary, as it acts like a Start-button on a console. It'll pause the game and'll give you the choice to either continue, go back to the title screen or quit the game. Z is used for jumping, while X is used for shooting. If you're not happy with these keys, you even have the possibility to reconfigure them to your liking. The rest of the gameplay uses combinations. One power, for example, requires you to jump, then press the Up cursor to change form. All in all, the controls are so simple you could play it with an NES controller and still have one button left unused.

In Akuji, there are quite a few things you can collect. There're the nine balls with extra powers, scattered all over the place, which you'll need to collect if you want to get further in the game. Along with these, there are red and jalapeno peppers. The red ones restore one HP, while the jalapeno ones restore all HP. You'll start out with three HP, but there's a way to increase the maximum number of them. This is done by collecting enough mana stones. Below your HP is an indicator that says how many such stones you've collected and how many are needed for the next extra HP. Silver stones will increase this indicator by one, while gold ones increase it by ten. Last but not least, there are seven picture books to collect. They're not necessary to finish the game, but once you've finished it, you'll be able to see some nice concept art as an extra choice under Options from the title screen.

A little other extra is that you'll get a rank once you've finished the game, based on the number of mana stones you found and the time it took you to finish the game. At the beginning of a new game, you'll be able to pass a special door if you're rank S or SS. What's behind there is up to you to find out.

Akuji The Demon definitely is a fun game that both young and old will love and enjoy. Whenever you feel like playing a game, but don't want to spend entire days on one, or don't want too much gore or brainwork, Akuji'sthe perfect choice

Death illustrated: (25.5Mb)

This is an impressive 3D shooter, featuring lots of action. Moving is done with the keyboard and aiming is done with the mouse; it is vital to keep moving and turning around to spot your enemies. The enemies are knight-like creatures, spiders, and other monsters and unhappy people. Some of them will fire at you using very fast projectiles, and some even have weapons that hurt you instantly when fired so make sure to hide or take out these guys quickly. You have several weapons at your disposal (once you've picked up the right ammo) such as the shotgun, the machinegun, and the rocket launcher, familiar weapons if you've played similar games. The game is drawn in black and white, except for some details such as explosions and blood, but this is not a downside; the graphics are really good, with effects such as smoke trails and explosions. The presentation is better than the average game too, with nice voice effects on the title screen and a large number of settings to change if you want to. The game also has heavy music to more than match the action. (You can listen to the songs separately in the Audio part of the Configure menu.)

It seems the game has a problem in loading the fourth map (Duel-DI). However you can tell it to start on the fifth map, or any other map, by changing the selection under "Starting Map" in the Settings menu.

Controls:

D = strafe right
W = move forward

I'm thinking of getting Red Alert 3. From the videos I've watched it looks pretty cool. Much better than the Stalin v Martains that I bought the other week for a few dollars (via Steam while it was on special offer), lol - though it is a scream to play.

Or, for those of you who would like to play all of the games because you really enjoyed Red Alert and Command and Conquer Gold, buy all of their games (minus CnC 3 Tiberium Wars, CnC Kane's Wrath, and Red Alert 3) from amazon for $19.99. A $20 bill, plus shipping, will get you 13 games that have been improved and updated to run on XP.

http://www.amazon.com/Command-Conquer-First-Decade-Pc/dp/B000CPKIT6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1244717716&sr=8-1

If you want the 3 newest games, however, these will set you back a little bit more. However, they are all 3 excellent games as well.

Hey, midori, honestly, I've seen the game, and it's really something (imo). By the way, have you tried the cut down version of C&C yet. The full version has quite a lot of comedy injected into it and really is worth the bother if you've got enough space. I'd go for the Red Alert package if you're limited as it's newer than the Gold edition, which is ancient by todays standards (not that it's lost much)

Have you downloaded Steam yet? You've got to get it and then get Half Life 2 Deathmatch. It is free. We need you to join the server next time it's running. :) Honestly, we're all relatively new at online gaming, so you won't feel out of it. The game play is really amazing for a game made four years ago. (As are most of Valves games)

Regards

I think the downloads have been cut somewhat. Not sure if the cut scenes are still included in the downladable games. Pity, though you can see them on You Tube, lol

To Midori, If you played thae game we were given back in March called Deep Quest, C&C is on the same lines with respect to game play, but instead of floating in water, you are firmly on the ground. C&C is a much better game than deep quest, even though it's an old game. Check out the smaller download that I've linked to in my second post, or just the demo which is even smaller, then you can decide to go for the big download.

Regards

I have these games already from my decade collection, but these are excellent games that really defined the RTS genre. The great thing about CnC is that they try to be a little comical about their games. For example, the acting is so overly done, that it is rather funny...but it was meant to be this way. Anyway....great games here people, worth the effort.

I found an unofficial version of C&C at gamershell that is only 99.5Mb in size. Apparently it's a Win 95 application so use the compatibility mode to play it.

I've finished preparing Wednesdays free game, so thought I'd post it early. I've not decided what to post for Thursday yet, so it will give me more time to decide what to post. There are still hundreds (probably thousands if you count all the really old games over 15 years old) of free games to choose from. :) Both the games I've chosen for Wednesdays free games have already been mentioned in passing elsewhere in the forums, but not as part of this project. They are either buried deep within the bowels of these forums or the links are dead, so I thought it appropriate to repost them today.

I was originally going to post the Gold Edition over the Christmas period, but lost all the data on my computer and forgot all about it. All the downloads are large. Each game is over 1Gb, though they are split into 500Mb downloads. I've also posted a link to a demo that's only 25Mb, for those who want to check the game play out before commiting themselves. If you're on a download cap, 2Gb can be a significant wedge out of your entitlement. The franchise has been around for nearly 15 years and is a brilliant rts game. The first one I bought was Tiberium Sun, the second installement to the C&C franchise, which I still play occasionally.

Command & Conquer Gold aka Tiberium Dawn (part I - 580.81Mb part II - 565Mb)

There have been two C&C games offered for fee over the last few years, the first is Command & Conquer Gold and the second one is Command & Conquer Red Alert 1 (there are now three Red Alerts I, II and III). As for the Gold edition, there are several upgrades available which can be accessed via the second link below (I’ve linked to those I reckon are essential). In order for C&C GOLD to run on Windows XP, you will need to burn the ISO image onto a CD with a CD Burner. At this point I can’t confirm that it will work on Vista, but if you are having problems I found a forum (linked to below) where a possible fix has been found.

Command & Conquer Red Alert 1 (500Mb)

This is the second Command & Conquer game to be given away over the last few years. This was for the 13th anniversary of the C&C franchise, and was released for free by EA Games (spits over shoulder)

Command and Conquer: Red Alert is a strategy game. For the thirteenth anniversary of Command & Conquer, EA officially declared that Red Alert would now be available as a free download.

The story takes place in an alternate stream of history, around the time of World War II. In this version of world history, World War II never happened, and Hitler was nothing more than a minor annoyance. The real threat here is something hundreds of times worse than Hitler could ever have been: Joseph Stalin. The Soviet Empire is killing its way through Europe. Towns are falling and countries collapsing before the overwhelming might of the Soviet forces. Does anyone stand a chance, or will the Red Menace engulf all of Europe?

New features include improved AI, new game units and structures, a Skirmish mode, and a detailed, interweaving story line.

Story

It's 1946. Mankind has just gone through one of the most brutal wars it ever faced. While the rest of the world is still in shock and trying to find ways to prevent such an event from ever taking place again, a Jewish/German scientist decides to act.
With a device he was engineering for the US government, he travels back into time to kill the person who he sees as the root of all misery; Adolf Hitler. He catches up with Hitler in 1926, as Hitler is still a young - but already embittered - man and 'disposes' of him. Without thinking through the consequences thoroughly enough, as will soon turn out.

Without Hitler and Nazi-Germany to keep the him in check after all, Hitler died before he ever became of any importance, Stalin takes his communistic USSR to unknown heights and then decides to speed up the world-wide Marxist revolution a bit by invading the free countries of Western Europe. Obviously, the West-European countries aren't too pleased with this and starts a grim guerilla war against the Russian invaders.
And so, in spite of our dearest scientist's efforts, a new World War starts.

Here’s a video of the story line:

Allied mission intro:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svNAHmE6_K4&feature=related

Gameplay:

In Red Alert, you choose which side you will fight for, the Soviets or the Allies. Each will lead you down a long string of dangerous missions. Either way you will command forces of land, sea, and air to achieve your objectives in battles that never should have taken place.

The game uses a very simple point and click style of gameplay, making it very uncomplicated, and easily accessible, resulting in a more arcade style of game. Each level has a different mission (with the briefing coming in the form of FMV sequences and brilliantly rendered cut scenes), which has to be completed in order to progress on to the next stage. Throughout the game you can build various structures to help you along your campaign, and eventually defeat the enemy.

Just like in Tiberian Dawn, begin a standard mission by establishing a base of operations. This means you'll need ore to build things, power to run things, and defenses. Both sides can build a certain set of basic buildings: Construction Yards (which let you build other things), Power Plants, Ore Refineries, Barracks (for training troops), War Factories (lets you build Tanks, Mind Layers, etc), Naval Yards (lets you build naval units), etc.

There are three difficulty settings to Red Alert ranging from easy to hard. By changing the setting you change your starting location and forces which makes missions much harder.

The AI has been improved in a few areas; specifically, it no longer stops at walls, instead often going after them with a vengeance (something you can use to help draw the AI units into range of your base defenses), and it will no longer leave a base totally defenseless when you assault its Ore Truck (the equivalent to the Tiberium Harvester in Tiberium Dawn). And thanks to the new and improved AI, the game now features the "Skirmish" mode, which allows you to practice on all the multiplayer levels, and your own custom maps; this also means you can play any amount of random battles against the computer, over and over.

Installation

The following guide will take you through installation step-by-step
64 Bit Users: Players have reported success installing the game using the Red Alert Setup Manager v0.98 tool. (3.1Mb) available from the following link.

http://ra.afraid.org/html/downloads/utilities-3.html

You’ll also find several other downloadable files from this link which can be used to rip the music from the game or even edit the terrain and create new units

First you need to download it. The files have been released in their original format (iso); one for the Allied missions and another for the Soviet missions, If you want to play online you only need one of them.
.
The files have been compressed to save on filesize (and so EA can add unnecessary promotional material), you'll need winrar, stuffit or 7zip to extract them:

Download:

Because the files for both campaigns (allied and Soviet) are iso images I’ve posted a link to a simple tutorial that tells you what you need to know to get this game to work. I realize most of you will already know how to burn iso images using your own burning software - {it’s really easy using NERO or Starburn}, - but I’m sure there are a few who may find it confusing. You’ll require two CD’s - you can use DVD’s if you don’t have any CD’s, but it’s wasting a lot of space unless you don’t mind storing other programs on the discs, but for those of you who are purists and like to dedicate a single disc to certain programs 2 CD’s are a must have.
