Thanks for these wizz. Nice to see Noitu Love. I'd previously posted Chalk and Tripline from this site, but lost the link in my favorites following a forced format earlier this year. good site with some excellent games. I like the look of the Synth 9 games.

Looking forwards to checking all these out; though not just yet as I've finally got Fear 2 working. I bought it via Steam when it was on offer a coupleof months ago and until today was getting that game unavailable message. Today is the forst time I've managed to play it. also Red Faction guerilla is working again (thankfully). I'd really missed it ove the last few weeks. Oddly both started working after the last Steam update.

W.R.

p.s.

Have you downloaded the L4D2 demo yet. t was put out on general release yesterday. Tell Carolina we could have a game or two, though it only contains the fiorst two stages of one map. Still, it gives you a good idea as to what to expect. I was a little sad to see the back of the original cast, but you soon forget them, lol. I've still to try out all the custom maps fr L4D yet. i'm still trying out all the ones from the Killing floor competitin. I'm amazed at the overall quality of all of the maps. To be honest I was expecting a lot of the runners up to be rather badly made, but so far all of the ones I've plyed have been constructed really well. some such as the North Sea one are a little too large and maze like. I could never get to the shop throughout the four rounds and didn't survive the patriarch with just a pistol.

Do you know whether the second round maps have been released yet?

Since I slept through yesterday's game, I'm posting what was supposed to be yesterday's along with today's. Yesterday's game was a game that I had been saving for a rainy day and well it was raining here yesterday (as it has for much of the month) and I decided it was well time to dust it off. Noitu Love is an excellent old-school platformer. For today's game, I ran across a new developer called Syn9. Syn9 has some pretty interesting games in their database and I've chosen 3 of them to highlight: Gorevania (zombie shooter,) The Griffon Legend (Zelda-like RPG,) and Prompt Critical (shmup.) Without further ado:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Noitu Love

I'm very fond of this game and as I've said, I've been saving it for the right time. Considering how we've embarked on our 1 year anniversary, I thought this would be a great week to introduce some stellar games. Hopefully some of you have agreed that the games this week have been a little above par. The following is a review from Abandonia Reloaded:

"Gone are the days of classic platforming!" cry the fans that remember the original Mario, Bionic Commando, MegaMan, Donkey Kong, and scores of other platformers that included the Nintendo-proven platform formula. If you are one of these fans, then look no further than Noitu Love and the Army of Grinning Darns; you won't find a better throwback to the days of retro platforming.

The story, although relatively shallow, deals with a mad scientist that has a rather strange fascination for robots and soldiers with smiles and plans for taking over the world with said minions. The plot does not really progress much between the initial introduction to the world's current state and the last level. You fight your way past hordes of grinning darns to get to the end of the level and fight a boss that is a greater minion of the mad scientist, until the very last level, where you get to trade blows with him yourself. A twist is thrown in where you have the ability to transform yourself into different creatures (a monkey, a super smart person with a big brain, and a bird) to get past certain obstacles. Although it was a great idea, I wished I had seen more used with it; there was great potential for some creature specialty combos, and it wasn't utilized until the last boss fight.

Unfortunately, the game probably would have been longer if more creativity had been put into the plot, but as it is, it is comprised of 6 levels that took me about two hours to beat on normal mode. Granted, I only have 24% of the game complete, but even if you play it on other difficulties to unlock more extras (of which there are hardly any), you'll still be playing the same levels with harder enemies. As it is, replayability is limited.

Although sometimes this same-old formula is bad (like in terms of the plot), the platforming action shines with old-school goodness as you run (and jump) circles around your enemies, all the while dodging bombs and bullets (or whatever other harmful projectiles that might come your way) and smashing your foes into the ground. The greatest part about all this fast-paced gameplay is the fact that it comes with an easy learning curve; you'll be beating up enemies like a kung-fu master in no time, thanks to Noitu Love's simplistic (and classic) controls.

Rounding out the game, and at the same time being the biggest reversion to classic platforming is definitely the graphics. They grab you, suck you in and do not let go, much like my mom's mashed potatoes. That's a good thing.

Download Noitu Love Here!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Gorevania

Gorevania is a great little 2d side-scrolling zombie shooter. Not much on story, but it is darned fun to play and a great little time waster. I know Stephen will appreciate this one. The following is a description by Syn9:

Use your shotgun and grenade launcher to blast away at the zombies.
Pickup the medical box to regain health. If you get bit by a zombie
your infection bar will begin to rise. Stop it from rising by picking
up a needle. Make sure to grab all the shotgun shells and grenades
you find so you dont run out of ammo.

Remember, stand too close to one of your grenades and you'll hurt
yourself too.

Controls
Left - Left Arrow
Right - Right Arrow
Jump - Up Arrow
Fire Shotgun - Space
Fire Grenade - CTRL
Aim Grenade - Up/Down Arrow
Pause - ESC/P

Download Gorevania Here!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Griffon Legend

The Griffon Legend is a fun Zelda-like RPG, with some outdated graphics. Don't let the graphics deter you though, as more often than not, outdated graphics actually add to the game. Consider this to be true here. TGL, actually has the distinguished honor of being the very first RPG created and finished using FreeBasic. This game led the way for many more RPG's using FreeBasic. It's a must download for any Zelda fan, or RPG in general. The following is a description from Syn9:

500 years after the Griffon-Dragon war, the Dragons have
returned to reclaim their empire. Cities are falling,
everyone is dieing, and the lone Griffon Knight Fayne is
caught up in the middle of it all.

During gameplay you can see up to 3 bars below your character.
The top is health, the next is attack strength (let it charge
to hit harder) and then spell strangth (same as attack). When
you learn new spells you will see their icons in the bottom
right corner with a meter below them to show them charging.
When the meter turns orange they are ready for use.

Controls:
ctrl - use item/cast spell
space - attack
esc - main menu
alt-enter - fullscreen/window

Download The Griffon Legend Here!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Prompt Critical

Prompt Critical is one of those newer style shmups where the developer incorporates highly stylized graphics and colors into the game. Though this game is slightly older, and the graphics aren't up to par with today's, it's still an excellent shmup worth hours of your time. If you don't have fun with this game, I'll refund your money in full and give you credit for one of next week's games. That's how confident I am (lol) In all seriousness, the graphics are great and the gameplay is intense enough to keep you coming back for more time after time. More from Syn9:

You are orbiting a worm hole and an enemy is coming through. It is your job to destroy them. Most of the time they fire homing bullets but sometimes they release a bullet bomb. If you do not shoot the incoming bullets they will take your health down.

When you see the blue star shoot it. You will receive a random powerup which can be health, missiles, or shields.

Destroying the environment and accuracy give you bonus points. As well as not getting hit.

Controls:
Mouse Look
Shoot = Left Click / Spacebar
Switch Weapon = Right Click
Pause = ESC / P

Download Prompt Critical Here!

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is roguelike rpg game. So it has randomly generated dungeons and it is also extremely difficult. Mostly due to the hunger system and the fact that your savegame is permanently deleted when you die. But I'm sure someone likes to play these kinds of games. There is an ingame tutorial where you play as a premade character and get extra hints. Most roguelike games usually only have ascii graphics but this also has a tile based mode. You can use the keyboard or mouse. When you die you lose your save but this does give a much greater feeling of accomplishment when you succeed.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a fun, free rogue-like game of exploration and treasure-hunting in dungeons filled with dangerous and unfriendly monsters in a quest for the mystifyingly fabulous Orb of Zot.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a variant of Linley's Dungeon Crawl that's openly developed and invites participation from the Crawl community.

Dungeon Crawl has superb, deep tactical gameplay, innovative magic and religion systems, and a grand variety of monsters to fight. Crawl is also one of the hardest roguelikes to beat. When you finally beat the game and write your victory post on rec.games.roguelike.misc, you know you've achieved something.

Thanks Wizzard, my fav type game. Here are a couple other free RPGs. Exodus are Christian game developers. This mainly means no sexy talk, dress and no big time gore. I enjoyed playing them. I could also let the 12 year old going on 20 play them and not worry if porn like pictures would pop up.

Today I have an RPG that I'm hoping no one has posted yet (sorry hamster for stealing your thunder...haha i even commented on it!) Guardians of Paradise is a really delightful game and any fans of Zelda or RPG's of that nature should enjoy this game.

An amazing freeware gem if I've ever seen one; GoP puts you in the role of Tela, a boy whose sister has fallen ill with an incurable disease. Legend tells of healing waters in paradise which can heal any illness, thus Tela sets off to get these waters and save his sister.

Guardian of Paradise has a very zelda-ish feel to it which actually ends up being a good thing. It is very easy to jump right into and has a surprising amount of length to it. You have your basic attack, the sword, as well as magic abilities that you will get from elemental spirits along the way.

This game deserves at least an afternoon of your time, if not more.

At only 5mb, this game is worth at least trying if you're an RPG fan. I highly recommend it =)

Sorry, I meant to post these when I got up this morning, but have been trying to fix a problem I have with my Steam client; around a third of the games i've bought continually say "unable to play at this time", which is annoying. I bought F.E.A.R 2 the other day and that also wont play. Thankfully I've been given some fixes to work through, but it's been a time consuming practice, with no positive results yet.

Anyway, here’s a great bunch of games that any adventurer will enjoy. There’s enough games to keep you entertained all week if you have the time to play them. My favourite is the last one, called Ultima 8. There’s several games from this series available free from the same source. Just look to the bottom of the download page for some of the earlier ones. I thought I’d posted Ultima several weeks ago, but must have forgotten to include it with the games I was posting. Most will play in XP (I’ve not had time to test any in Vista so would appreciate feedback if anyone has time). Ultima 8 does require DOSBox to work. Enjoy this week. Wizard takes over for the week so you’ll see me again next Sunday.

Afterlife 2: Rickards Journey (37.9Mb)

The Gates of Hell have been locked shut for centuries by the power of the Holy Cruciforms. These ancient artefacts are the only force separating the world of life from the Thirteen Realms of Hell... But someone has removed ten of the Cruciforms and unleashed the denizens of Hell upon the world!

The ten lost Cruciforms must be found and restored to their rightful place, but they have been hidden within the shadowy Realms of the Afterlife itself, and only one man is brave enough - or foolhardy enough! - to dare fly his balloon through the gates of the Underworld...

That man is a daring adventurer by the name of Rickard Bronson! Armed with an arsenal of dangerous hand-bombs and his Deadly Hunting Umbrella, can Rickard manage to overcome the forces of evil and find the hidden Cruciforms?

Afterlife: Rickard's Quest features more than a hundred levels, including secret levels and training missions; scores of hellish critters for you to blast with your incendiary bombs and Deadly Hunting Umbrella; bosses, unlockable hidden features and extra balloons with unique abilities; and a variety of challenging levels, from bloody open combat arenas to dastardly mazes and traps.

Afterlife: Rickards Quest (4.35Mb)

When heroic adventurer Rickard Bronson entered the Afterlife to recover and restore the ten stolen Cruciforms, and lock shut once more the Gates of Hell, he was successful in his most dangerous quest to date. But questions remained unanswered: who was responsible for the theft? And why?

Now, the ancient order of the Brotherhood of the Gatekeepers has again summoned Rickard's aid. Can the daredevil explorer finally unmask the identity of the culprit and put a stop to their schemes once and for all, or do further mysteries and revelations lie in wait for Rickard upon his return to the Afterlife?

Drawing inspiration from the classics of the genre, Afterlife 2: Rickard's Journey is an epic, narrative platformer, in which Rickard Bronson returns to the Thirteen Realms of Hell to complete the journey of discovery he began in Afterlife: Rickard's Quest. Armed with his trusty hand-bombs and Deadly Hunting Umbrella, and aided by an assortment of arcane treasures looted from the Realms of Hell, can he put a stop to his mysterious foe's dastardly plans?

Biomenace (1.54Mb)

This is the full, registered version of BioMenace as released by Apogee Software (now 3D Realms) in glorious, glorious freeware. Although it still runs in DOS (or a DOS window).
Crash landing a plane in a city is normally a bad thing. It only gets worse when you are attacked by slime beasts, monsters and flaming red devils. On top of that your supplies - especially health - are limited and you must rescue kidnapped surviving humans in each level before you can continue on... Are you up to the challenge?
Fortunately in amongst the chunky pixels of the early '90's is the hero's visage emblazoned with both a mustache and mullet. The weapon he carries along with the various upgrades plus grenades are - I'm sure - only secondary to his intense hair styling’s on the alien decimation front.

Throughout the dozen or so levels in each mission you will encounter many well drawn scenarios, such as an ant colony, space station and construction site - most inhabited by completely new artwork and monsters.

The game is a marvel - everything on screen was created by one man (Jim Norwood) and it still stands up today as a great game. Some weapons kill enemies faster while some weapons have no effect on others. Additionally some weapons can only harm monsters when said monster is in a certain state (for example the fire devil cannot be harmed while on fire, only when in a humanoid form).

Needless to say I am recommending this game highly to you and am strongly, strongly urging you to not only download, but to share with your friends (such are the glories of freeware). An excellent game through and through.

Review by community member:

Sigh... overrated, overrated. While Biomenace is a competent game, it's certainly not great. Despite being published by Apogee and using the Commander Keen engine, Biomence is in fact a one-man job that ultimately results in a flat-out mediocre experience.
Level-design is quite poor, and many of the stages consist of little more than floors and ladders, not unlike Loderunner. There are only a few levels that come close to the clever platforming tricks and amusing settings of other Apogee games like Duke Nukem and Keen.

The balance of the monsters and weapons is way off, with monsters usually taking way too much damage and your weapons being weak and uninteresting. Power-ups exist, but they wear off too quickly and are often wasted with misjudged shots.

In all, Biomenace is a stock-and-standard platform-shooter which didn't get much attention and deservingly so. Now it has gotten a second lease of life by being released as freeware, though frankly Apogee's other offerings are, in my opinion, more worth your time than this. Alien Carnage, also a freeware Apogee platformer, is considerably better, while even their shareware titles like Duke 1 and 2, Monster Bash, Cosmo and Commander Keen are still worth looking into.

Necropolis rising (3Mb)

Long ago, a battle was fought between the armies of the living and the dead. The forces of good won like they always do. The leader of evil- a necromancer- was killed when his shriveled, blackened heart was impaled by his own blade by the King during the skirmish. Now, years later, thieves have plundered the final resting place of the necromancer, stealing his magical spellbooks for resale on the black market. Something goes horribly wrong when the last spellbook was lifted however. Now the necromancer has returned and is out for revenge on the King and his army of good. Weakened and lacking an army, he sets out to recover his magical spellbooks and find a way to regain control of his undead army. Only then can the King be defeated and a rule of darkness begin!

ULTIMA 8: PAGAN is a adventure/role-playing game where you play the part of the Avatar. Avatar is the character you have been playing since Ultima I. This time, however, you are suddenly thrown into the evil Guardian's world. The Guardian's world is a desolated place where you are completely alone and have no idea as to where to go or what to do.

Ultima 8 is different from previous Ultimas due to real time combat and playing (such as in Diablo), "obstacle courses", climbing and jumping. You also cannot have a party like in earlier Ultima games. You are always alone.

The music in this game underlines the overall atmosphere, which is dark and mysterious. It is one of the best made music scores and backgrounds for the games of that time.

Controls are completely mouse driven, and need some practice, but it is not hard to master them after learning the basics.

To be able to play the game under Windows XP / 2000 you will need DosBox, and as for playing the game with sound and music, you also need VDMsound, which you can get here.

0Okay, today I’m posting three games all with similar names. The first one is a Gauntlet style game called S.C.O.U.R.G.E. , the second one compelling RPG and the third one of the entries into this years Tojam 2009. I may add a few more games before the evening is done. These were posted in rush as I've been out for most of the day and didn't have the time earlier this morning to post them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S.C.O.U.R.G.E. (1.41Mb)

Life is comfortable in the quasi-medieval city of Horghh. In fact it is so
comfortable that a group of aging adventurers - having no monsters to slay,
young people to rescue, or tree-stranded pets to fetch decide to go off on a quest.

This game reminds me so much of the Gauntlet series, though the graphics are better. You an find The Gauntlet as a free download via the free games synopsis.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Scourge: (27.6Mb)

A deadly epidemic spreads across the Western lands, bearing close resemblance to the curse of an ancient pirate. Civil war has broken out amongst the East. The world needs a hero. The world needs you! Build a crew and set sail to unlock the mystery of the curse in this compelling RPG.

The Scourge : A Survival Horror Experiment:
(15.6Mb)

Description:

A desperate man in a deeply troubled place you must fight for your life against a horde of zombies to survive until dawn.

How to Play:

Use the mouse to aim, shoot and control your flashlight. Use the w, a, s, d keys or arrow keys to move. Most of your play will be in dark lighting and you'll need to use your flashlight to see where you're going and what's chasing after you.

Survive until dawn.

Installation Instructions:

Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed. If you're not sure if you do or if you are getting errors on startup of the game go here to run the DirectX installer from Microsoft. Then run main.exe to start the game.

Tips:

If you get a lot of enemies attacking you at once try to circle around them. This will force all the enemies to get collected in the center of the room as they all try to get you. Think of circle strafing if you're familiar with first person shooter gameplay.

It may take you a few plays to figure out what weapons work best for you. If you find yourself dying alot trying switching your weapon of choice when are prompted to choose a weapon.

Get a feel for the enemies movements. They don't always just blindly chase after you. Sometimes they may chase you and then break off revealing some openings for movement you didn't see before.

Video:

The video does not do the game justice, so just take it as an example of what the game looks like generally.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9ct7s4Ihuo

Download:

http://www.tojam.ca/games_2008/scourge.asp

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Freeride Earth (1.52Mb)

An atomic war has come at last. A very long night is here to stay, and it surely will be followed by an eternal winter. The entire civilization is either wiped out or under duress. But for the mad boarder, it's the coolest thing that could ever happen. In Freeride Earth, you don't have anything to do except enjoy snowboarding across an entire planet. So hop on your board and enjoy practicing tricks.

This little charmer is just what players need to wind down from a long hard day. The randomly generated 3D mountains are as beautiful and soothing as the sound of cutting fresh powder. However, we think the real charm of this snowboarding sim is that it's not made by a major developer and it's wide open for updates and gameplay add-ons.

http://download.cnet.com/Freeride-Earth/3000-7411_4-10034909.html?tag=rbxcrdl1

or

http://www.softlist.net/program/freeride_earth-software.html

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

finally a very hard Zelda-like RPG game with old graphics

La-Mulana:

This huge game made in Japan (and translated into English by Ian Kelley of AGTP) is a fangame based on "The Maze of Galious", a Konami MSX game of the 1980's.

You play the whip-wielding Indiana Jones-esque archaeologist Lemeza Kosugi as he investigates the ancient ruins of La-Mulana in an attempt to find its treasure and one-up his father, who is trying to get the same treasure as well.

The game is huge, with many different areas to explore and dozens of items and weapons to find. Each area has a large variety of puzzles and traps (many of them quite fiendish) and you need to solve the puzzles in each area to discover the Ankhs and Ankh Jewels, which allow you to fight the eight Guardians of the ruins. To solve the puzzles you'll need to be able to read the tablets scattered throughout the ruins, which will require a Hand Scanner and translation software for the portable MSX that Lemeza has brought along on the adventure. Your Hand Scanner will also allow you to find items and search the bones of less fortunate adventurers.

Controls:

Arrows - movement
Space - Primary weapon (Whip)
M - Secondary weapon/item (none in the beginning)
F1 - Pause
F2 - Inventory and primary/secondary weapon switch
F3 - MSX cartridge change (eg. Save card)
F4 - MSX screen (for maps)
F5 - Options (eg. Load aka Continue)
F11 - Quit

Save game:

You cannot save your game until you get enough money to buy a save card. Even then, you only can save the game in the Chief's hut (at the beginning of the game)
From the start: Go to the left and destroy some vases untill you got $10, buy a green card and go back to the chief to save your game.

Hints and walkthrough:

Hi dragonheartman,

Sorry I've not responded earlier. I've been laid up in bed over the last few days recovering from a bug.

Thanks for posting here. You game is an excellent freeware game. It's not very often that we get developers posting here. Thanks for taking the time out to pay us a visit.

I'll certainly get back to you if I come up with any ideas. Maybe you should hold a competition to encourage the community to partake. I'm sure you'd get loads of ideas that could be incorporated into a update, or even form the basis of a sequel.

btw, Nice web site. You'll find my links also take you to your site. I usually try to direct the community to the author of the work out of respect. Though if you feel the bandwidth of your site may be affected because of an increase usage I could upload a copy of the game to my file front account? Let me know.

Regards

***the download page is: http://www.starlessumbra.com/download.php***

Many blogs full of advertisements and spam have somehow come across my game and are hosting it. While I appreciate their extra promoting, I don't trust their downloads and to be safe you can find everything you'll need on the website, Starless Umbra

Thank you for checking out my game, and please email me (E-mail Removed) if you have any suggestions, feedback, or anything else.

Regards,

Hi Wizzard, I thought as much. But I should still have checked over the image links. Never really considered it before though as I only saw them as images

Will you be rejoining the server?
I'm going to jump in in about an hour for a couple of rounds. I think Bently and GG may turn up around midnight GMT (1hr 25 mins away)

It wasn't that the link took him to the site, if you click on the googled images, you'll see that some of the images are hosted by the warez site....blogspot

Which link took you to the site? I don't use and would never post a Warez site, so haven't a clue how it linked to it. I checked the links last night after reading ibwebbs posts and made sure they were okay; though I didn't check the image links just found some images via Google and posted those, never thinking to check them. Sorry if it's caused any problems. Thanks for removing the link Wizzard. :)
