"Are the millions of people who have bought ringtones breaking the law if they forget to silence their phones in a restaurant?

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/10/judge-ringtones-arent-performances-so-no-royalties.ars

Joking aside (actually, that's less of a joke than you might think), the ringtone argument was made by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) earlier this year when it sued certain mobile carriers in the US in an attempt to force them to fork over royalties every time a customer's ringtone is played.
Even though the carriers were already paying for download rights to the songs, ASCAP argued that each ring was a
"performance" and therefore those download payments weren't enough.

Hallo, I know it is late for some tips to get the program running under Vista, but perhaps it will help those who dl narrow the deadline.
1 - Download the original file you get from GOTD

Download Cool RingTone Maker now

and the file 1.1.4 from the developer.

http://www.coolringtonemaker.com/down/crm.exe

2 - Unzip the GOTD file and read the read me, then start the setup to get the GOTD activation;
after you inserted the path for the installation (eg : C:\Program Files\...), cut off the setup process, that should be enough for the GOTD activation.
3 - Run the 1.1.4 setup from the developer and then shut the program if running .
4 - Run the program as administrator and insert the Reg-Code you got in the read me text and in the activation message, shut down the program.
5 - Reboot
6 - Start the program (without admin rights)
Now the program is registered and the menu bar is working and you can happily rip off your music.
I do not know how to send the snips to a cellphone - but that doesn't matter for me, as I do not use such a thing. I need short sound files for my messenger e.g. or other alarm sounds on the computer.
I hope my comment makes sense - sorry for my bad English.
graylox

------------------EDIT-------------------------
I put this into the comment section for some minutes, it is awaiting moderation.
And I sent a message to the developer, but I think it is too late for them to re-write the activation code.

==================EDIT 2=========================
Just got an answer from the developer :
"Thank you for your comments, we will try our best to make it better"

See comment #40. The company put up a link to an updated version that does work on Vista. You must uninstall the original version, but keep the code GAOTD sent in their readme. Install the updated version and register with the GAOTD code. This should work for you. It did for me.

I am running Vista also and am having the same problem. Nothing opens when I click on open audio file. Not even dragging and dropping. Nothing happens. I have uninstalled and re-installed at least 4 times. Nothing works. And I have tried all the new links where it says that bugs are fixed.

Hi - I know that this question is evidence of me being technologically ignorant but here it goes. How do you get the ring tones to your phone once you make them? I don't even know what format it would have to be for my phone. I have a tracfone. Thanks.

Sorry. One more thing.
The screen shot feature will automatically save a series of screen shots into one selected folder for further editing. This is really handy if you are doing training or Help files. In my experience, it is unusual for a photo editor to include a screen shot feature.

Oh, and we'd be dealing with the cell phone software companies. Verizon doesn't make all the games, in fact most of them aren't made by them, they just offer them for sale via their service.

Agreed - I wouldn't have expected it to be possible now. In the near future, with GOTDs potential one day it would be very well possible. Heck, I wouldn't be as near annoyed if VZW didn't give the WORST trials I've seen in my life. 7-30days is the norm for a computer program... 2 minutes for a cell phone program. I'd be happy with a one day trial or a half-hour to one hour trial...and I mean, its pure profit. Even think about how not only do they offer 'unlimited' usage of a program for sale but the option to select subscription where you pay a monthly fee to use that program. Wow, and I thought the no-thrills wireless plans were expensive.

I would imagine it would be hard. Getting major cellphone companies to put they're apps on this site would take some convincing. Also this site is fairly new, and could use another year for credibility. Most apps that aren't from major companies, are usually free from what I've seen. Good idea, just don't know if it'd work.

Hi everyone,

Love the site - I think I'm one of the first few people who learned about your site. A friend on a forum had told me about GOTD awhile back and ever since I've been a visitor. I love this website and have downloaded alot of the programs you have given away.

Now, I have a interesting suggestion. I love the idea of games and applications on my phone and I think it'd be awesome if you could occasionally have cell phone providers give one away. As with all software giveaways, it'd increase awareness and sales of whatever is being given away. I for one know that if I received a application for free and really liked it on my phone, I would be more interested in purchasing other things. Cell phones are increasingly popular and with better graphics and capabilities on phones, 3D gaming on phones is now possible. Some cell phone providers, such as Verizon, do not offer any software trials worth speaking of (okay, they occasionally have a game where you can play for two minutes and then the game expires). That doesn't really make me want to buy the game... I barely loaded it and read the instructions on how on how to play let alone tried out the game!) Not only this, but VZW also has alot of useful apps including weather programs, email programs etc, but once again barely any trials and most of them are relatively expensive. Similar issues occur with software for other kinds of phones and cell phone service providers.

Would it be possible? I'D LOVE IT!
