not sure yet whether to get a subscription to photobucket so that there wont be as many problems with bandwidth when i upload images; that is if picdepict has to close down due to possible changes in the American legislation.

Have you tried minus.com yet? Free accounts, 10gb storage, drag and drop uploading, amongst other things.

I'm not sure where it will fall, as far as legislation is concerned, but you can mark files and folders private without it affecting web posts. People can't search for your files if you disallow it. It's what I used for my TES: Arena and Daggerfall posts.

I though I'd update the Kayak post to include images. I may post images for the other games later. not sure yet whether to get a subscription to photobucket so that there wont be as many problems with bandwidth when i upload images; that is if picdepict has to close down due to possible changes in the American legislation.

Although Kayak Extreme is now 10 years old it’s still the only kayak game I know of and it still gives me a buzz when I play it. Unfortunately the game has problems running in Windows XP, Win 98, win 2000 and ME are fine. I also have had the game working in Vista and before I allowed any updates to XP it also worked.

[quote]Race against the clock in this fantastic simulation of the ultimate white-knuckle watersport.

Test your abilities in a range of environments - Alpine mountain streams, African rivers and the thunderous flows of Alaska. There's also a training course to get you started.

Complete stages to unlock new Kayaks and paddles. You'll need to master the water to complete all three difficulty levels.[quote]

[quote]Whitewater kayaking action, without the cold or risk of injury! This is an incredible kayaking simulation that has to be seen to be believed. Incredible white water effects and realistic kayaking physics are just the start. Pilot your choice of kayaks through four different environments as you race the clock to unlock the next track. Execute special tricks and turbo strokes to paddle. [quote]
Reference accesed HERE Nov 2011

Features:

•	4 different environment - Training, Alpine, Africa and Alaska

•	A really great water effects

•	3 difficulty levels

•	3 different rafting boat

•	When people open the new maps

There's only one aim in "Kayak Extreme": beat the required time on a course in order to proceed to the next course. There are four different environments to race on; a training run, an Alpine mountain stream, African rivers and the thunderous flows of Alaska.
In order to access the main part of the game, you have to complete the training course in 1 minute, or less.

Initially you have one Kayak type and one choice of paddle. The challenge begins with a countdown, after which it's just you and your kayak against the flow of water! The water looks amazing in game, with underwater currents and hidden rocks. Take the correct path to beat the training time limit of 60 seconds. I can tell you now, unless you’ve played this game before I doubt you’ll unlock the next level until you’ve tried several times. From what I can remember you have to enter two of the gates in reverse (distinguished by a diagonal line through the gate number), which until you’ve got the technique isn’t easy. You can of course skip a gate, but that will cost a time penalty which is mentioned later. Those lost seconds (if you miss a gate can mean the difference between scraping through or failing miserably.

You can return to the training route as often as you wish, even after completing the training successfully . After completing it once, your progress is recorded so that the next time you take the challenge you can race against your previous best time, visually, as a "ghost" of your former run will be retained for you to compete against.)

Every course consists of a set number of "gates" (Starting at #1), through which the kayak must pass in order to avoid a penalty. The number varies for each challenge, but the rules are the same - gates must be navigated in numerical, ascending order, #1, then #2, etc. There are two types of gate: Green & Red (identified by the horizontal coloured bars that run down their length). See the images below for more information.

To pass a Green gate successfully, the kayak should go through the gate facing forward. To pass a Red Gate, the kayak must first pass the gate, on either side, and then turn to re-enter the gate, so that the craft is facing back up towards the start.

If a gate is missed, then a five second penalty will be incurred when the Kayak reaches the subsequent gate. Hence if you miss gate #1, you'll get a penalty when you negotiate gate #2. If a reverse gate is missed, this penalty is increased to 15 seconds. There's nothing to prevent the player returning to a missed gate and negotiating it correctly, provided that they have passed no later gate before doing so. Time is of the essence, however, and often it's better just to take the penalty if it's going to cost you more than five seconds to return to the gate you missed.

The course is complete when the player crosses the finish line. Any penalties incurred will be added to your overall time for the route. If your time (with penalties) exceeds the target set for the challenge, then you fail the level and cannot proceed to the next course.

To begin with, the times required are quite easy, but become harder as you progress. There are three levels of difficulty, and therefore three decreasing amounts of time in which you must navigate the route. The positions of the gates also vary, to provide more of a challenge as your skill increases.

In addition to opening new courses, your successful completion of some levels will open up new Kayaks and paddles. The performance of each craft differs, and it's up to you to choose the kayak and paddle combination that suits you best. What works for you once, may not necessarily suit you again.

Kayak Extreme can be played with a keyboard or game pad. The nature of the game doesn't really suit Joysticks, so we've deliberately not included these devices as an option.

There are TWO sets of controls available - Control set A and Control set B

Control Set "A"

•	Hold down both left (1) and right (2) cursor buttons to move the Kayak forward - alternate oar strokes will occur provided both keys are held down.

•	Holding the right cursor (2) only, will stroke the left oar, thus turning the Kayak gradually right.

•	Holding down the left cursor (1) only will stroke the right oar, thus turning the Kayak gradually Left.

•	Using left Ctrl (3) with the left cursor key will turn the Kayak sharply left

•	Using right Ctrl (4) with the right cursor key will turn the Kayak sharply right

Control Set "B"

•	Hold down both left and right shift to move the Kayak forward - alternate oar strokes will occur provided both Shift keys are held down

•	Holding the right shift only, will stroke the left oar, thus turning the Kayak gradually right

•	Holding down the left shift only, will stroke the right oar, thus turning the Kayak gradually left.

•	Using left Ctrl will turn the Kayak sharp left

Turbo mode and Special Tricks:

•	In either control mode, pressing the Space bar (7) activates Turbo Mode.

•	Using either control set, you can execute special tricks

•	Eskimo Roll - executed by pressing the 'A' or ';' keys (5). This move can help you through the back flowing rapids, and can be used to roll under obstacles blocking your path.

•	Pirouette - executed by pressing the 'Z' or '/' keys (6). Executing a pirouette speeds you through water flowing against you.

•	When engaging the "turbo", a power bar appears on the right of the screen as an indicator to the player of the remaining time for the stroke.

•	When this bar is exhausted, the effect of the turbo disappears. The power meter will then recharge itself, during which time it cannot be activated.

•	F8 = Invert paddle keys

•	ESC = Pause menu

•	With the game paused, the user has the choice of:

•	CONTINUE - Carry on with the current level

•	RESTART - Start the current level again

•	EXIT TO MAIN MENU - Quit the current level and return to Main Game menu.

NB: Users with Microsoft Natural Keyboards - Using control setup 2 you may find that the shift key fails to function as normal. We advise users with these devices to use control setup 1.

Gamepad

Please ensure your gamepad is correctly configured under Windows before starting the game:

•	Click on "START" on the Windows Desktop

•	Select "SETTINGS" from the menu that appears

•	Double-click on CONTROL PANEL

•	Double-click on GAME CONTROLLERS

•	There are two "tabs" to the panel that now appears: General & Advanced.

•	On the "General" tab, ensure that your device is reported and identified as working "ok".

•	To add your device, click on ADD and select the controller from the list that appears.

If your controller does not appear in the drop-down list then you need to install the drivers that came with your device in order for Windows to recognize it.
On the "Advanced" tab, ensure that your device occupies the first available slot (ID 1). To change the order of any device in this list, simply click on the "change" button and type a new ID number at the flashing cursor position.
Click on "OK" to finish and return to the Windows Desktop.
Once in the game, go to the controls section and change your default control setting (usually KEYBOARD) to Gamepad.

Download:

You can download the demo from the developers site. Initially it looks like you have to pay for the game, but if you follow the links it takes you to a the download page where a message has been posted saying that the developer has converted the game to freeware. You still need a licence code to register the game. To get a free licence you need to create a Small rockets account (free), then you can get a free code for the game (as well as several other games that include a speed boat racing game and a motor racing game. Of all the freebies the Kayak game is the best with the speed boat coming second. If you like retro racing games the others are also okay. You need to request licences for each game.

You can find the game page HERE and the download page HERE

First listed very briefly by Idunnobutiwastold a year ago Here, with just a fan art picture and game home page link! Great for the additional info, thanks gxgoogoo! :)

The game has a very novel and excellent game concept, and is eminently playable as it is; while under-going ongoing development. Looking forward very much to when it is fully finished!

The dirt track arena is bordered by an unfenced precipice, and there may also be a gaping hole in the centre of the arena. It sure is great fun trying to bash other player's cars off the edge or down the centre hole, all the while trying to avoid them doing the same to you and your car!

KarBOOM
KarBOOM 0.1.4 Thumbnail

KarBOOM is a car-crashing game with a multiplayer focus. The idea is simple: stay inside the dirt ring. Variety is added with mutators and game modes to change the rules of play, bots, online multiplayer and shoulder-to-shoulder multiplayer. The simple controls mean up to 4 players can play on one keyboard. Gamepad support means up to 8 players can play on one computer. Add bots or go online for up to 14 cars smashing each other around the place!

So far, all of KarBOOM's features are free. Check out the downloads page to find KarBOOM is a small free download that requires no installation. Offline play and all its features can be played as much as you want with no need to create an online account.
So what do I need an online account for?

A standard online account is free and lets you use the forum. KarBOOM is still in its infancy, and I could really use your feedback so I know what features need improving, what bugs there are, and what cool stuff should be added to the game!

A premium account is an upgraded version of the standard account, and it lets you play KarBOOM online against other players. I also plan on adding a few extra features available only to premium accounts (like an online profile, letting you share replays and custom levels when the replay and level editors are finished!).

Normally, upgrade your standard account by logging into KarBOOM.net and clicking buy in the navigation bar and paying me some money through Paypal. At least, that was the original plan. KarBOOM's final distribution model hasn't been finalised yet -- it's a work in progress, just like the game. Don't worry, though! For now it's just free! All created accounts are upgraded automatically (for now), and the whole game can be downloaded for free (for now) -- clicking on the Buy button will ask you to log in, and if you log in it will just thank you for upgrading.

Why are you giving out free upgrades?

Who wants to pay for an upgrade if there aren't enough users online to play against? To get things off the ground, all standard accounts created are automatically upgraded for free until further notice. The current public version is rather limited in online features, so future updates will have some new features to make it easier to host online games and to find an active game that suits your tastes.

Get in early and play KarBOOM! Get involved in the official forums and help me make KarBOOM reach its full potential. Check the announcements forum to keep up with the latest updates.
Why are you including this information about upgrading if, for now, it's meaningless?

I'm making changes as I go. This website could use a re-write, but for now I'm just trying to keep it current.
So what's in store for KarBOOM?

I regularly get requests from KarBOOM users, and there've been all sorts of requests I wouldn't have thought to add normally.

These requests have helped me compile a to-do list. While its contents are subject to change, here are the biggest changes that are planned:

Level editor: A level editor is planned for KarBOOM 0.3 (the latest version is KarBOOM 0.2.4) KarBOOM's future, and is currently in development. Its development has spawned some other changes that will be in the next update: There are different surface types (dirt, tar, ice), obstacles (ramps and barriers), and hazards (pits and grass). Levels use very little data, so players can easily share levels with each other and load custom levels for online games. This is a big feature, hence the change in version number from '0.2.x' to '0.3.x'.

Save and share replays: Replay mode will get new features in the near future, making it more interactive. This includes features like rewind, slow-motion, and scrubbing. Later on users will be able to save and load replays. When the level editor is complete, replays will include level information -- this means if you are watching someone else's replay and you like the level in which it is played, you will be able to save that level for your own games later on.

Race mode: It is a car game, after all. While the details are not finalised, the idea of a race mode making it into KarBOOM has been very popular indeed.

http://karboom.net/

KarBOOM is a bitesize freeware treat about some lovely little cars indulging in a spot of sumo wrestling on a high plateau above a bottomless drop. It supports internet and local multiplayer, the latter a ridiculous attempt in trying to fit four desperate hands on one keyboard, each sweating to control the adorable wind up bumper cars as they fight their way through a bevvy of game mutators that work much in the same way as Unreal Tournament handles things.

KarBOOM 0.3 Progress update 2 – Indie DB

In development since late 2010 and seeing regular updates driven by community feedback, it’s an easy spot of fun. The driving model skips merrily between “Oh yeah, I got this” to “Oh god I’m totally out of control please stop I want to get off”, usually whenever the Boost mutator is in effect.

KarBOOM is eminently customisable, allowing you to fiddle with all manner of victory conditions, bots and mutators. It just barely works at times, the merry chaos in the latest update supporting up to 48 cars in the same arena, in as much as that madness is actually playable (it’s not).

Follow the fun over at the official page.

Dirchie Kart's author Peter Leahy has emailed me today, to say the PC update is now available.

It has 10 new tracks ripped from the original Super Mario Kart, a whole host of fixes and tweaks as well as a new visual style.

The bug where the Karts all look like black silhouettes on ATI cards should be fixed also.

The new download size is 66Mb and it now needs MS XNA version 4.0 which is free from Microsoft HERE.

Thanks for the update Chazzo. As for posting games. You've done a fantastic job over the past few months. I really appreciate your help because I've been a little jaded of late and have found it hard to spend the time I used to searching for games. I know what you mean about finding premium games. It's not easy. I understand the effort that goes into it because as you know I've done the same. Rest assured, whatever games you find, they will be appreciated by a section of the giveaway community, even if we don't get much feedback. Keep up the brilliant work. I do have several games (some of which I mentioned in my last PM). I've been catching up on a million and one thing so have not yet got them ready for posting, but will be over the next several days. I just need the right moment to be in the mood. lol (I've also got a lot of recently purchased games that I'm still exploring, so am a little distracted from the project at the moment).

I've received an email from the game's developer about an update to Dirchi Kart due out in a week or two!

"Just letting you know I’ve got new version of Dirchie Kart almost ready for release, the PC version is my beta testing ground before I update the Xbox version, so it’s getting some content I can’t put it the Xbox version namely ports of all the original SNES Mario kart tracks (ripped from the orginial ROM).

This new version will also run in full screen, updated to XNA 4.0 and has a heap of graphics and menu tweaks to smooth out the experience.

I’ve just started working on another series of original tracks based off current F1 tracks (They’ll come in a later release), obviously they’re stylised condensed versions but I think they’ll be a bit of fun!"

Looking forward very much to this update (Xbox update to follow later)

I've upgraded my post, this will make the game really fantastic fun! :)

Nice graphics! Considering it's a 'take' on Mario, it does quite a nice job! So many developers have ruined the racing theme, but this game has done a good job :D

Thanks WR! :)

I've started going back through my posts adding tags so they can searched for properly using the forum search. Remiss of me to have omitted these initially sometimes!

I'm not sure how many more really excellent free games are out there, so some posts in future for the free games forum by me may be for more run o' the mill games! Though I'm still very much on the look out for the very best free games! There seem to be more and more free games coming out each month but a little bit 'sadly' the majority seem to be flash games rather than stand-alone games! I'll still consider these for posting, provided they are really excellent and can be downloaded and they are not site-locked ie unable to play offline! My preference though remains posting stand-alone free games! :)

Thanks Chazzo. Another excellent game to add to the massive collection of free games we have posted info about. I'm going to start updating the game synopsis and maybe change it's name to something a little less verbose. I'll be working backwards, but will add any new games as they are posted here.

As it’s bank holiday I thought I’d post another freebie today - reminds me of Prince William and Kate driving through London in Prince Charles’ sports car Lol!

Dirchie Kart (66Mb)

Dirchie Kart is a brilliant ‘take’ on Mario Kart. It's a really excellent cartoony kart racing game with Physics modelling and surface friction and good action effects, played on an isometric view track. It is free for the PC, with a pay for Xbox version also available.

You need to download and install the Microsoft XNA framework v4.0 free from Microsoft. Do note that the latest updated version won’t work with XNA v3.1 but there is no problem about downloading and installing XNA v4.0 whether you’ve XNA version 3.1 installed or not.

A big draw to the game is the split-screen multi-player mode though you’ll need at least 3 Xbox controllers to play with four players, but you can play with 2 or 3 players as well as single player mode. There are also ‘battle’ and ‘drag’ multiplayer modes to complement the race mode. Each race consists of three laps.

There is a choice of 8 player avatars and three race vehicles, a souped-up car, an (old!) grand prix car or a truck. There are various weapon power-ups to pick up, plus speed boosts, and you can shoot backwards or forwards. As well as shooting at opponents they can of course shoot at you, even blasting you off the track! Some tracks have minefields or drops alongside the track.

There’s a single race option or two championship modes and 10 very varied tracks of three difficulties to choose from in single race mode. You can also choose between three engine sizes for whichever vehicle you select. The game’s AI is set at just the right level, meaning AI opponents will not all vanish out of sight, but it is a challenge to win races. Some tracks will need power-slides around corners, others quick reflexes to avoid falling or sliding off the track, especially if you get a sudden unexpected power-boost! You can also select a 'shop' mode where you purchase add-ons from coins won in the previous race, but at the possible expense of losing places trying to get coins!

Vehicles lean while cornering. The switchable bike mode is fun though you have less traction for cornering when in bike mode! You also get speed boosts by choosing a good cornering line. Winning does depend a lot on choosing good racing line round the tracks. And of course in despatching opponents from the race at suitable times/places. There’s a very useful spring bonus that will jump you ahead of an opponent. There are hazards on the track but unlike Mario Kart, weapons bonuses are only one or two set places around the track. They are disguised with a ‘?’ symbol so you can’t choose which to get or when, though you can just dodge around them if you don’t want weapons or extra weapons at a particular time.

Vehicle handling is excellent which is a very necessary feature for a racing game to play well. Collisions and explosions are fairly commonplace and it’s great fun to dodge rapidly between opponents over-taking them on the way!

The game plays windowed with no option to change this, but the window is sized to fit the screen width at least for a normal monitor. It probably looks best played on a widescreen monitor. I did need to move the window manually slightly to play but this probably depends on native screen resolution in use. Trying to use any substantially lower screen resolution just placed the window unreachable and unmoveable. If this happens reset your screen to a higher (preferably maximum) resolution.

Use the ‘Enter’ key, ’Arrow’ keys and ‘Esc’ key to navigate the menu or Xbox controller buttons etc.

The game can be played using the keyboard but is best suited to using an Xbox controller plugged into your PC USB port. The keyboard controls are ‘Arrow’ keys Accelerate, brake, turn left/right, ‘Q’ key Power slide, ‘E’ key Eject to pocket bike, ‘ W/S’ keys Shoot forward/backward, ‘ A/D’ keys Cycle weapons.

It needs 254 Mb hard disk space for the extracted files and runs direct from the extracted folder.

The only very slight distraction is that spectators are just flat shapes fitting with the cartoony nature of the graphics. The graphics are great. The intro music is a bit unusual for a racing game, but the in-game music and sound effects are excellent. Many of the cartoony graphics in the game are really quite surreal. There’s one very particularly surreal effect - if you fall off track-side drops; like Pinocchio’s nose, your hat increases in height each time you fall into a drop! So you could be driving round with a balloon-shaped hat many times taller and wider than your vehicle!

I think it’s an excellent idea to have the PC version free to act as an advert for the Xbox version. I like this approach as it can generate the author some income to cover development costs etc, while providing the full version (and a game of commercial quality) free for the PC!

As an Indie game, it hearkens back well to the days of 16-bit racing!

It’s an excellent action racing game, freeware on the PC and it’s very cheap for the Xbox version as Xbox games go! Being able to get this entirely free for the PC makes it a very most worthwhile download! Very much even the more-so if you like death-match racing!

It’s very enjoyable and great fun which makes for a really great recommendation!

That's very odd but most of their games are also on the YoYo Games website here:
http://www.yoyogames.com/users/Pug%20Fugly

They don't have Horace but it wasn't that good so you're not missing much.
You can try the online version of The Pyramid here:

Thanks, RO, I like Pug Fugly Games, but some won't run on my system, e.g. The Pyramid and Horace.
Task manager shows that the process is running, but there is no game; not as admin, not in compatibility mode. It's a pity.

Thanks. :)

I thought I recognised the name of the developer and one of the games which was posted over 2 years ago HERE. It won a couple of awards in the independant festival awards for 2007 (Best game with un-lockables and was also a runner up in the best shooter award and best sound award as well as the best use of innovative controls). Great game, as are some of the others you've posted.

I'm posting lots of games today to make up for the unexpected lack of games. I don't think any have been posted before except Return to Sector 9 but even that was posted 2 years ago. These games were all created by Pug Fugly Games. The games I recommend are Return to Sector 9, The Pyramid, Revenge of the Robot Cats, Destructivator, Orbit Racers, Project Microlife, and Vortex.

Project Microlife

Sector 9 is the last unconquered region of space. It contains millions of planets, rich with minerals essential to the continuation of the human race. Most planets are populated with vicious life forms - these we can handle. However, the planets are also infested with diseases that are wiping our workers out. All efforts to fight these diseases have failed...

But there is a hope. A new anti-virus has been developed. A microscopic creature that resides in the bloodstream, annihilating all disease. The tests must be completed - this anti-virus is essential to the very survival of the human race. Project microlife must succeed...

Horace and the Spiders

Some of you may remember Horace from his adventures on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum (I believe some games were ported to other machines as well). Well, Pug Fugly Games have remade this classic game, and here it is for you to download!

Download (3.2 MB):

The army of Zallagor has conquered the Earth. Only one man can stop him now - the Destructivator!

Legions of enemies await you!

The Destructivator is a retro styled platform shooter - 20 levels of fast and furious arcade action. Blast your way to Zallagor's lair to rid the world of this evil monster!

Yeah okay, the story line is naff, but it's all about the gameplay! And it is free after all!

Download (1.9 MB):

Collect power ups to increase your fire power - but be warned, the more powerful you are, the more enemies will attack. Delight in Destruction! Chuckle at the Chaos! Die horribly!

The game that started it all. Back in 2004, Pug Fugly Games spent 20 Euros on Game Maker, and Attack of the Robot Cats from Mars was created!

Simple, addictive and challenging, this is a fun little game. Classic old school arcade action at it's best. Well, maybe not its best exactly, but worth a go!
