And a big thank you to you wizz; I doubt the project would have continued in it's present form if it hadn't have been for you, rO and The Webmaster. And thanks for reminding me of all those that have helped (and continue to help). The games syynopsis has been a very valuable contribution to this project, so G@rgoyle, who continues to file away details for us - a special thank you to you. :)

Congratulations Stephen, and a big thank you to not only Stephen, rO, thewebmaster, granny (g@rgoyle,) pavid, tnip and some others that I'm sure I've forgotten but also to all of the forum members who have encouraged the growth of the project and supported it day in and day out.

As for today's games. This is an excellent lot of games. Definitely check out the Squid Yes games as those were two that I had set aside to post at some point in time as well. Definitely two of the better freeware games available. I don't know much about the others, but they look good. Thanks again my friend.

I’ll be posting games all this week. reverseOrder has agreed to let me post on his days so that I could celebrate the first years anniversary of the free games project. I meant to do this last month, but got side tracked, so here it is now. I’ll have some good games for you over the next five days (well four now, lol) that include an interesting truck racing game, a squad based /third person shooter, a tank game, asteroids another arena shooter , a children’s drawing game, plus more. Today’s games are all space arena shooters. I know there are loads of them around and we’ve posted quite a few already over the last year, but I think these are worth the effort, especially if you like anything psychedelic and you’ll find some on similar lines to the first couple I post today. The first three are all done by the same author. The third game I’ve had to censor the name because it’s really not appropriate for these forums. Following the download link and videos will take you to the full name. It doesn’t sit right with me. The word is a horrible word and I wish the developer had chosen something else, but that said I don’t think the game should suffer because of its name.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Squid Yes Not so Octopus: (6.78Mb)

The Story:

Born of atomic death! Raised in the shadow of a mushroom cloud! He’s a squid! Not an Octopus! He’s Squid Yes! Not So Octopus! And…. he’s very irritable.

Let’s face it, you’d be irritable if you were a mutated radioactive squid that nobody wants to talk to for fear of dying a slow painful death after just standing a little too close. And man, some mornings you just want to take it out on the whole wide world. Normally SY!NSO! can keep his temper, those breathing exercises the United States Radioactive Protection Force taught him work wonders. Throw in a nice warm cup of tea and the world usually becomes a nicer place to live in.

Man, it’s not so easy to keep your temper when your home is being invaded by alien robots from the planet Thwip. Must they pick his birthday too? That’s just so inconsiderate.

Oh well, I guess there’s nothing left to do but charge up your patented “Beams Of Electro Death” and annihilate every last one of the little buggers. Terrorising innocent squids is a mistake they won’t ever make again if SY!NSO! has his way. Ok, so maybe he’s not quite so innocent after that incident with the cow and the twig, but that was an accident that could happen to any toxic squid with telepathic powers.
Why they chose SY!NSO!’s abode, nobody will ever know. After they’ve felt his wrath, it’s doubtful they’ll ever return.

Take control of SY!NSO! in this arcade blaster and show the Thwippers that they really picked the wrong house, the wrong morning and the wrong squid this time…

Squid Yes! Not So Octopus! is an arena shooter inspired by the work of Eugene Jarvis and Paul Holmes, early developers of games for the Spectrum and ZX81 The aim of the game is to survive for 8 minutes and score as close to 9 points as possible.

The Game:

Guide SY!NSO! around the arena using either keyboard or joystick taking out the swarms of incoming aliens. Collect gems along the way to score higher. Shooting aliens or collecting gems increases your score by small amounts; every minute you survive gives you one whole bonus point and increased firepower. The maximum possible score is 9.
As well as featuring a full arcade game experience condensed into 8 action packed minutes, SY!NSO! also features a series of accessibility options and player aids to help the player get to grips with the game. Switch on swarm warnings or select a practice mode to learn the ropes or to just kick back and enjoy yourself without having to worry about score.

Play on one of two separate boards, a classic arcade board recalling the arcade classic Robotron or the SY!NSO! pixel board featuring a rather fine pixilated backdrop or play with a selection of screen effects including glow effects, scan lines or the all out insanity of “ARE YOU MENTAL?” mode.

Originally created for awesome web magazine Way Of The Rodent and released by Bagfull of Wrong and Retromasters and built from an idea by Steve “Maibock”, Squid Yes! Not So Octopus is a unique arena shooter experience that appeals to retro lovers, arcade game addicts and those with a nose for a fine game.

Storm Assault is a horizontal shooter created by the Storm Project development team as a tribute to Konami's early Gradius series. Everything from the classic power meter, upgrade capsules, and boss ships with specific weak points have been transferred and updated with slight changes for this loose remake."

Since space arena games are not as popular as they were in the late 80s, the Storm Project development team decided to offer everybody the chance to experience a game similar in concept and look to Gradius. That game is Storm Assault, a freeware game that can be downloaded right away following the link at the end.

The game is still in its early stages of development (version 0.2 currently), but the two available stages are excellent.. You can check out some Storm Assault game play by watching the video’s below.

The second level features battles with Moai statues, which was originally never included in earlier releases. Joystick and gamepads are automatically detected, but you can use the keyboard to control your ship as well.

Video and Images:

I uploaded over 30 images, so though I’d link to my photobucket account as I think posting 30 images here would overwhelm the post, lol.

I did manage to get anearly night which is amazing. But I woke up around five hours later at midnight with the thought that I'd not completed a beta test
( a typical obsession with games sort of thing to do - lol) report which was supposed to have been sent in yesterday. It's called Grand Masters Chess Tournament and is from Alawar. It's not the best looking chess game I've come across but it does the job.

Thanks, Whiterabbit... this looks intriguing! (time will tell if it's frustrating...) Seems there's been a couple of magnet-inspired games on here lately... must be you guys' magnetic personalities! :-D Wishing you a good rest, Stephen... make sure that early night doesn't turn into a late one! Ya hear?

Hi Ornithos, I won't be back online today. Hydrotherapy, too many late nights and my wifes illness last week has left me feeling drained, so I'm going to lay in front of the TV and watch Simpsons for 90minutes then I'm having a really early night for the first time in years. lol

Strange Attractors: (25Mb)

A one-key Space shooter

Strange Attractors was created for a 'One Switch' competition. Just because the only button used by the game is the space bar (and Esc to exit) doesn't mean the gameplay isn't complex and unique. Remember, not everything that is simple is easy!

By pressing the spacebar, you activate the gravity drive of your craft and create an attractive force between yourself and the other objects in the game. Your goal is to sling and bounce yourself from the bottom of the level through the portal at the top.

I found the game really well made and oddly satisfying. The game concept is simplicity itself, but to actually succeed, well, I’ll leave that up to you to decide. I think this is different enough to warrant a place in anyone’s game library. You can score points by crushing the floating spaceman (yeah a little sick maybe, but it reminds me a little of Jets & Guns because of this little aspect, though in reality it’s nothing like Jets & Guns)

You can see a video of Strange Attractors 2. the game play is similar to the original freeware, but the commercial game is obviously going to be much more complex. The freeware version is a 2D version. I don’t know how many levels are available though as this was a last minute inclusion due to posting Tuesdays game on Sunday (for the dial up members who needed an alternative to Hope Springs Eternal, which was too large for many to download. You can download a demo from the developer’s home page:

The following is a quoted interview with the developer about Strange Attractors from

Quote

Dan: This is said far too much, but I truly feel this Strange Attractors deserves the compliment. It's groundbreaking. With a wonderful mix of physics, objects and dying spacemen, this game rocks harder than 10 Queen tribute bands. Put together!

Matt: It's... insane, to put it as simply as possible.

Dan: As my febrile friend has just pointed out, it is indeed 'insane'. The basic premise of Strange Attractors is to guide your floating 'gravity generator' from the bottom of the screen to the top, over a series of ever more object filled levels.

Matt: The objects in question are mostly metal spheres of varying size, vortexes of gravity and poor hapless spacemen. Pressing the spacebar will attract you to the nearest and largest floating object. Using their orbits you can manoeuvre yourself through the ring at the edge of the level, progressing onward.

Dan: I truly think the spacemen are the best part of this game. There's nothing better than using the gravity field you create to hurl a spaceman into a a floating metal ball, with the satisfying thud and spray of red claret. And if you want to get inventive you can try bashing into or projecting the smallest balls so that they smash into the poor individual.

Matt: In Strange Attractors, like in all good games, acts of horrific and insensitive murder like this will earn you lots and lots of points!

Dan: Indeed it will. Crushing a spaceman's lifeless body between two hunks of metal will earn you a nice 250 points bonus, while bashing your floating ball generator thingie into a shining blue star to destroy it garners a cool 500. In fact, along with the later grey balls, the stars are the only thing not affected by your gravity field.

Matt: One thing that took some getting used to was the fact that you only used one key to operate the entire game. The menu selections were even timed so you don't have to use the arrow keys. It begs the question... if you could get the space key to work, then why not go to the bother of getting the arrow keys working?

Dan: Strange Attractors was actually originally created for the 'One switch' game competition hosted by a site called 'Retro Remakes'. The idea was that games such as Strange Attractions which make use of only a single key can be played by people with certain disabilities which exclude them from more mainstream gameplay.

Matt: When Dan told me to download a game called "Strange Attractors" I told him NO, no more porn! But it turns out it wasn't porn, but a reasonably fun game involving gravity.

Dan: Ookay, well, I think it's clear that Matt is running out of things to say now, so let's wrap it up. I really love this nice little game, it's quirkiness really appeals to me. It has good quality graphics, especially for a home-brew, and a reasonable quality sound. Excellent dying screams for the mortally wounded spacemen, that sort of thing. All in all I think Strange Attractions is an excellent game, and I'd advise anybody to whom it sounds vaguely interesting to try it.

This is a different game to the main game. You control your ship by using the mouse. Note the difference in the name of the game. :) The purpose of Strange Attractor is to dodge the incoming projectiles for as long as you can.

Strange Attractors Screensaver:

The Strange Attractors screensaver has nothing to do with either game I’ve posted above. It just so happened to turn it up while searching for the first game, which I found out about while considering buying strange attractors 2. While reading the information about the game, it mentioned that the developer had done a freeware version first. I was intrigued by the one key game play, so thought I’d check it out and found the whole package really well done. I’ll be posting a link in the screensaver thread for this screensaver as well.

I though it and the other four screensavers were actually really good. I’m into anything psychedelic, so a couple of them really appealed to me. The following was written by the author. You should see the page where he actually got the idea for creating this screensaver from:

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/StrangeAttractor.html (yeah, I know)

I came again across Strange Attractors on MathWorld and decided to make a screen saver with the idea. I really like the organic shape of the curves and it was well worth the two hours I put into it.
You need DirectX 9.0c and Pixel Shaders 2.0 to run this screen saver.

Other Strange Attractors:

Finally, I thought I’d finish off with a few you tube videos of Strange Attractors. If you like cool psychedelic visuals and electronic music, you’ll love these:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=SGWgCffiW4c&NR=1

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0WJFyImA3Aw

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3zRabFANBs8

Related but not Strange Attractors:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QFE2n-OQSSk

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk5fMRG_bPY

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=OWdSkTmuNWE

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=u6z3nRWPlQo

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=D4h9sntgj0U

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zhkLStV7hvE

btw, I’m not particularly into this trance music, but it does have a strange attraction sometimes. I much prefer progressive rock, world music, especially a mix of Japanese and Indian, 80’s and 90’s indie and grunge etc. Though I can listen to most music apart from boy and girl bands. :)
