THERE'S something weird going in the world of the web browsers.

Despite making the most commonly-used browser in the world, Microsoft has for the most part been the critical underdog.

Internet Explorer 6 struggled to cope with the demands of the modern web user right from the start, and IE7 and IE8 didn't do enough to differentiate themselves to convince people to upgrade.

Now the software giant seems to have bounced back.

Rest assured, Microsoft's rivals in the browser market – Google, which makes Chrome, and Mozilla, which makes Firefox – won't take it lying down.

And this hippy-dippy love-in stuff gets even worse.

Lately, Microsoft has been sending the Mozilla team cakes every time they release a new upgrade for Firefox.

Cakes.

In 2005, Mozilla even let Microsoft share its web feed logo at the same time Microsoft was asking it to come on over and help work out how to make Firefox and Windows Vista play nicely together.

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9186318/IE9_5_ways_it_cuts_browser_clutter

It remains to be seen if IE9's simplified "window to the Web" aesthetic will give Microsoft back its lost browser market share.

IE9 applies the JumpList functionality to Web sites

http://www.informationweek.com/news/galleries/hardware/reviews/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=227500091&itc=ref-true

HTML5 graphics. It's a lead that won't last: Both Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome will have hardware acceleration in mainstream releases before too long." Firefox 4 gotit now."

hardware acceleration and that Firefox accelerates Windows XP, which IE9 doesn't do since it doesn't run on Windows XP. "We are faster and we were first,"

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2369239,00.asp

12 Things You Need to Know About Internet Explorer 9 Beta

1. It's Fast. Users who bailed on IE and switched to Google Chrome or Opera because they were so much faster than IE7 and 8 should know that the latest version of Internet Explorer can keep up. Not only is IE9's JavaScript performance nearly on par with its competitors, but its startup time is the best, and IE9's graphics hardware acceleration (which Firefox 4 beta 5 also offers) actually makes it faster for some Web content.

2. Forget XP. you're out of luck when it comes to trying out IE9. Microsoft takes advantage of Windows 7 and Vista's newer DirectX capabilities for graphics hardware acceleration, and some Aero desktop features in its new browser.

12. It's not perfect. still beta.

http://www.networkworld.com/news/2010/091810-7-eleven-works-to-integrate-mobil.html?hpg1=bn

7-Eleven works to integrate Mobil business, says no to IE9
Microsoft may have released Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) into public beta but IT managers have more fundamental issues to consider than the latest internet browser.
Many businesses are still grappling with compatibility issues in IE7 and IE8 and are far more concerned with the stability of their IT environments.
7-Eleven is one such organisation.
Like many businesses, 7-Eleven’s office and mobile office environments run on Windows XP, which does not support IE9. The company looked at deploying IE8, but was forced to reconsider because vendors such as SAP do not support the browser in certain IT environments. 7-Eleven uses.

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/technologylive/post/2010/09/ie9-and-windows-xp-readers-speak-out/1

"They do this KNOWING (and not caring that) their customers will be XP'd off."

Please NOTE IE9 is NOT compatible either in Beta form or when finished with Windows XP.

You cannot run it under XP. Only Vista SP2+ or Win 7

To the myriads of us out there with XP, intent on keeping XP,(at least until we HAVE to do an OS reinstall!) the best alternatives are Firefox, Opera, Chrome or Lunascape 6 in about that order! Followed lastly by the desperately slow IE8.

I use Firefox 3.6.9 with No-Script add-on to prevent most drive-by malware!

Firefox 4 is very promising, once add-ons catch up on compatibility! Hardware acceleration support depends on having a recent PC/ graphics card!

Of course if I do have to reinstall, I'll move across to Win 7 !

Microsoft ships IE9 beta, pushes Web, not browser
Leaving out Windows XP users is 'major shortcoming,' says analyst

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9185338/Internet_Explorer_9_beta_strips_down_for_speed

Those who have written off IE as being slow and old-looking are in for a surprise. The just-released Internet Explorer 9 beta is dramatically faster than its predecessor, sports an elegant, stripped-down interface and adds some useful new features.
IE8 took between five and six times the amount of time to complete the SunSpider tests as its next slowest rival at the time, Firefox 3.6. IE8 also took 14 times as long as it took Chrome; and 15 times as long as Opera.

IE9? You've got to be serious. It's like DirectX now, every couple of years they ramp it up a major version. I just hope it'll work good. And update like a security patch instead of a full software package.

Yes finally Internet explorer is getting the border-radius property and other selectors other browsers have had for a while. Hopefully this will make it way easier to design cross browser websites. I use Internet Explorer but Microsoft needs to learn that every major browser out there but their own runs in a similiar way and they aren't changing to explorer standards anytime soon. So hopefully IE9 will run better in the end and make it a whole lot easier to make websites that run smoothly crossbrowser. My dream is when a site is viewed the same in any browser on any platform without any browser specific coding lol.

Q, Why do you call it a platform preview?
A, As you can see, the Internet Explorer Platform Preview is not a full web browser. It’s intended to give Web developers an early look at the Web platform technology coming in the next release of Internet Explorer. To distinguish it from a full browser, we call it a platform preview.

Hi to all my friends from the over the hill gang. I hope you and your families are all doing well. For me so far so good, treatments are going well and just taking it one day at a time. I always make sure to stop and smell the roses, every day is a gift. I do check in often to see what’s going on, but do not post as much as before.

To Goody, read about your problems in the other thread and hope the best for you. Will keep all of you in my prayers and I ask you do the same for me. Just a short post for now.

"I've had too many posts and e-mails that I put some sweat into disappear into the great unknown."
Who does not know this? For Firefox there are at least two add-ons which work very well:
AutoSaveText - Automatically saves and restores text you typed in forms or textareas. and

Lazarus - Never lose anything you type into a web form again! Lazarus securely auto-saves all forms as you type, so after a crash, server timeout, or whatever, you can go back to the form, right click, select "recover form", and breath a sigh of relief.

Another useful helper for Firefox: Resizeable Textarea.

Sure, thenameipicked, there could be other solutions, but we can't change anything.
None of the suggestions made by the users of these forums are realised.
Well, I don't think such a message is really important. Just reload before you write and you are up to date. As I always need some more time for my posts than a native speaker, I mostly pre-write my answer in Notepad, then copy and paste it into the reply box. If in the meanwhile someone else had posted, I'm able to take this into account -
or I just ignore it, as it is mostly not important who writes first.

I think I said one thing wrong. I just posted 2 to a thread in the last hour, with someone else posting in between, and I can still edit them both. Even after logging out and back in again to test it. Could be a glitch, though, because I was editing the first one while the other person was posting. Probably does work, though. Probably, the one hour limit is the only restriction, regardless if anyone else posts, but I can't say for sure.

Scubaguy.. great to see you posting again.. missed you! And you are right, we do only have one hour to edit what we post.. but, if I take my time in what I'm typing (and I have a big problem with transposing things due to one hand typing faster than the other from arthritis), then I don't need to edit.

Hi, scubby, I'm happy to see you :)))

Yes, you are correct, we demigods have a lot of cryptic powers.
So I was able to put the missing "R" into the title: Foums became mysteriously Forums.
Maybe one of the Mods may even have a cure for my bad English.

Midori, the edit button works for an hour, and yes you have to be logged in.
When there is a burning need to edit your comment after this time, please shout loud or just send a PM. One of the many Mods will be there with a helping keyboard and edit your typo.

Thanks, GMMan... but what I meant was, if you're not logged in and are just looking at the posts, you won't see the "edit" option under your post. Once you're logged in, you will. So I must've checked the forum to add to my post without logging in yet, and noticed that the "edit" option was gone... hence I thought it didn't last as long as has been said. But yes, I realize that you stay "logged in" for a certain period of time. Now does anyone know what that is? LOL! (seriously, it doesn't matter... takes but a sec to log in) *&:-)

Actually, midori, you can. On the top-right corner of every forum page it indicates your status. If you're not logged in, it gives you the username and password boxes. If you are logged in, it'll tell you "Welcome, usernamehere!"

Just to clear it up,you have one hour to edit your post, and the person making the post is the only one who can see the word edit under thier post.If you look at the bottom of my post you do not see the word edit but I do. Mods are the only others that can edit your post, they are all seeing and have many powers that we mortals do not have.
