Thanks for the usuful info mikerb, especially the Vista info. I removed Vista over ayear ago and have still not bothered to reinstall the think, partly due to the many games I've bought that wont work with it. I know I could run a dual boot, but don't want a dual boot as I often turn the computer on and then leave it for several minutes. It would always default to the first OS in the list, which is a pain. :)

If the game works for you, in my opinion it's definitely worth the effort to download. It's got some original features which you'll see if you download the program.

Poing pc, from the website:
Troubleshooting

Poing is several years old and is sadly showing its age in some places. If you encounter a “Memory access violation” error when running the game, there a few things to try which may help:

    * Make sure that your graphics card supports at least DirectX 7 and can handle a screen resolution of 800×600 in at least 16-bit colour. Pretty much any PC made within the last five or six years should cope with this, but some older integrated graphics chipsets may struggle.
* If the game loads but crashes after you select a levelset to play, try reducing the game’s colour depth to 16-bit, even if your system can support higher.
* If Poing won’t even load up to the main menu, try putting this premade configuration file into your Poing folder and relaunching the game (right-click the link and choose “Save as…”).
* Unfortunately Poing doesn’t get on very well with Windows Vista. You may be lucky, but chances are the game won’t even launch.

configuration file here

I thought I’d revisit the theme of Arkanoids. It’s been two months since I posted the last ones, so it’s about time I posted the following. The first two used to be full commercial games, but are now freeware (though DXBall 2 is only a small game with around 25 levels. The developer hopes that people will enjoy the game enough to buy the level packs. However I think you can buy much better ‘up to date’ arkanoids for just a little more than what they are asking for each of the expansion packs. The third one has always been freeware. I posted details of it previously in the Arkanoid thread and it is called Poing. Two of the games come with levels editors. Poing is a sideways breakout with a difference. The ball physics are also excellent. You can spin the ball and make it curve. Leading to some excellent trick shots, lol.

POWball aka Power ball:

I bought this several years ago and was pleased to discover that the developer had made it freeware though he hasn’t updated the main site to this fact yet. Follow the first link to download the game for free.

You can get extra levels directly from the author’s site. There are quite a few custom made levels and there’s also the ability to make your own levels using the editor that comes packaged with the game.

The graphics are very old, so expect to see lots of grittiness; but, don’t let this put you off the game. It’s one of the better freeware arkanoids available.

Quote:

Set in the 25th century out in the cold depths of space this game challenges you with 100 levels in the classic style of the Breakout and Arkanoid games but with much more than the original offers. You'll find this incarnation to have much better playability, action, strategy, sound and graphics than any other. The basic idea is to hit a ball with your paddle and knock away bricks until the screen is cleared, whilst trying to keep at least one ball on the screen. But what better introduction can there be other than to dive right in and start playing. So, whadya waitin' for?

Download link

http://www.softempire.com/powball.html

Authors site:

http://www.powproductions.co.uk/powball_index.html

DX-Ball 2

This is yet another game I purchased several years ago and now its freeware. I did post the original DXBall a the beginning of this free game project, but thought I’d save this one till now. There are similarities to the original (as you would expect), but there are also some improvements. I hope you enjoy it. You can get more board packs if you like the game, but you have to purchase those from DXBall’s home site.

Quote:

Fans of Breakout have no shortage of spin-offs to quench their brick-destroying thirst. DX-Ball 2 adds to the mix explosive bricks and power-ups that include multiple balls, fire balls, ball catch, and more.
If you haven't played a Breakout-style game before, the idea is simple: Use the mouse to move a paddle back and forth along the bottom of the screen, while bouncing a ball to break through a pattern of bricks above.

Download Link:

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,18720-order,1-page,1/description.html

Authors site:

http://www.ldastore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=LDA&Category_Code=DXB2

Poing:

<blkquote>Poing! PC is the award-winning freeware game that puts an innovative twist on the tried and tested style of Breakout. Destroying bricks will not necessarily help since they will keep coming back… instead, the aim is to break a path through each level and smash the back wall until it fades away, allowing you to progress through to the next level in the set.
As an added twist, if you lose the ball after progressing through several levels, you won’t lose a life immediately. The ball will plummet back through the levels you’ve beaten until you either catch it or it goes past the first level of the set. Sounds complicated? It isn’t! Download the game and play it to find out how simple the idea really is.
Fortunately there’s a wide variety of power-ups to help you along the way, including the Bat Autopilot, Force field and Promote. Poing! PC also keeps track of your games and compiles a whole list of lifetime statistics along with the per-level set and all-time hiscore tables - and if you get tired of the included levels, you can make your own with the included level editor!.

http://www.zolyx.co.uk/poing/

finally, for those new to the forums, check out the arkanoid thread. You’ll find many great free arkanoids to keep you occupied for months:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2607

I highly recommend you visit http://www.gametop.com and download all of the arkanoids they have which numbers at least 10 and include Nuclear Ball, Egyptian Ball and Twinzoid, though apart from Egyptian ball, the names have been changed to A-Ball and Geometry Ball. All 10 are full commercial games, but you get them free. Check the links via the forum links rather than the Gametop one though as I do explain about the Gametop policy of opening up your browser when a game is closed down.

I've not finished Treasures of Montezuma yet either. I was stuck on level forty something for ages, then did some minor upgrades to one of my computers, which has become my main gaming computer, and somehow lost my progress, so have had to start over again. Now I'm stuck on level thirty four, lol

I'd add number 8 to the above list

8) Funkiball. I'd forgotten how cool this game was. With a great story and some excellent board styles, unusual power ups and decent graphics, this game definitely deserves to be in a top ten list.

So.... here's the rest of my top ten (which changes a little as my moods change. Ricochet Infinity encompasses all of the Ricochet series.

9) Arklight (This is a cross between a breakout and a space shooter. I wasn't sure whether to include it in this list at first, but technically it is a breakout game. Though the sequel Arklight 2 is an asteroids clone.

10) Arcamania 2 (I loved the first one as well - It was given away last year - but received quite a bad press - which I reckon was because of the games difficulty, though some hated the sound effect also for the pass-worded saves were a little too retro for many. Arcamania 2 is frustratingly hard to beat. I 've never got further than about level 5 or 6, but I keep coming back for more. (I've had it for several years)

Some others that jump into my top ten occasionally are Z-Ball, Ultranium 5, Arkanoid the Virtual Isles (another previous giveaway), Magic Ball 3, Ball 7, Break In another frustratingly hard 360 degrees breakout game, Clash, Chaks Temple, Nuclear Ball (or any one of the Urse games such as Cow Ball or Inca ball), Super DX Ball Deluxe, Fizzball, Little Gods, and Takarin, a very unusual breakout from the guy who made Takamaru (Takako is his wifes first name). There’s probably lots more but I’ve not reinstalled a lot of my arkanoids since rebuilding my computers last September.

Alawar have posted two new games that may be of interest to arcade game lovers, especially those that love match three and arkanoid games. The first one is the sequel to Treasures of Montezuma called The Curse of Montezuma. There are similarities to the original such as the sand box at the bottom of the board and a cartoon style introduction; but the actual game looks a lot different to the original. I loved Treasures of Montezuma, but so far I'm not sure about this new one. I’ll have to transfer the demo to one of my other computers so that I can carry on where I left off (hopefully) and to see if it's worth buying though at the moment I don’t think I’ll be buying it :(

Curse of Montezuma download link:

http://www.alawar.com/game/curse-of-montezuma/

As for the second game called Bonampak; it belongs to my favorite genre, the Arkanoids. It’s advertised as being ‘made’ with fans of Hyperballoid and Magic Ball in mind! I’d agree with the former, but there are no similarities to Magic ball apart the obvious (to destroy bricks)

Bonampak download link:

http://www.alawar.com/game/bonampak/

I’ve bought every arkanoid that’s been released over the last few years (to my knowledge anyway), but I doubt I’ll be buying this one. Yeah, it’s got beautiful graphics just like Hyperballoid has; in fact I’d say the graphics for this game are better than Hyperballoid, but only just. It looks like you’re looking at the game through a hand lens as the bricks look much larger than the original Hyperballoid.

The game play is similar to it’s predecessor with respect to un-inspiring power ups and slow ball speeds, (even when set on hard). Also the bat physics aren't the best. There's no option to get rid of the last few bricks and I became so bored of trying to get the last brick when playing level 1, I ended up losing all my lives. I definitely wont be buying this arkanoid; which is a first for me since getting back into arkanoids following my accident nearly three years ago. I think I’ll return instead to one of my favorite arkanoids (that I’ve played over and over). The following are my all time favorite arkanoids (from amongst a couple of hundred from my arkanoid collection):

1)	Acky’s XP Breakout (The graphics are dated but the game play is underrated)
2)	Ricochet Infinity (Great game but IMO overrated)
3) Incrediball: The Seven Sapphires (The best 3D arkanoid for game play (IMO), though the graphics are a ‘little’ dated)
4)	Beat Ball 2 (You can get Beat ball 1.5 for free - see below for link)
5)	Reaxxion
6)	Breakquest (Every level set looks very different, with different brick types and a great power ups manager which allows you to pick and choose your power ups – theres loads of ball shapes and bat shapes as well)
7)	Breakball 2 Gold (This has several modes that extends the game play - I’ve had this game for several years and still not completed every mode/level)

You can get the first Beatball for free; either from the link below or from the arkanoids link at the bottom of this post, though I think the version number from that link is v1.0 as opposed to v1.5. there's also a link to Beatball in the freeware library:

Beatball v 1.5: (I didn't realize it had been updated)

http://shareme.com/details/beat-ball.html

And for those who haven’t checked out the arkanoid post in the forums you’ll find loads of excellent freeware, abandonware, browser and commercial (but being given away free) arkanoid/breakout games. I recommend the freeware breakout Poing (follow the link below for a link to this game) which has an unusual slant on breakouts and together with Breakball has great ball physics (try spinning the ball and see what happens)
