Thanks wizz for these funny games.
Reactor and Revolution are already sleeping on my system since some weeks ago, it's time to play them now.
Of course I have to play Stargirl and the Thief from the Exploded Moon (gasp!)
Just because: Stargirl is short, flabby and has stumpy legs, but she sure as hell has DETERMINATION! RAWR!

LOL for the warning "WARNING GAME CONTAINS CUSS WORDS NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN", I think those screenshots of all the brutal shoot- and war-games have much more influence over kids than some words in a game can have. Well, that's just my opinion.

Today I have a collection of 6 games from a great indie developer named Origami Hero. The first game is a platformer titled Treasure Hunter Man. The next is another platformer titled Stargirl and the Thief From the Exploded Moon. Next up is another platformer titled A Game With A Kitty followed by A Game With A Kitty 2. The 5th game is a point and click adventure game titled Cedric and the Revolution. The last game is another point and click titled Reactor 09. Hopefully this will wet everyone's palate a little. All 6 games can be downloaded from the link following the post. I don't have time to individually review all 6 so I've borrowed some rather good reviews from some friends.

Treasue Hunter Man

Treasure Hunter Man is a freeware 2D platformer created by Bernie, featuring four dungeons with different themes to explore, a variety of inventory items to find for puzzle-solving purposes, unlockable skills, a couple of secrets, and two endings to discover.

Use the cursor keys to move, press the X key to jump, and hold the Z key to sprint once you've acquired the ability to run. Weapons are not available to you at the beginning, but can be found during the course of your adventure. The boomerang is thrown upwards or downwards by using the up or down arrow key together with Z.

Hold the up arrow key to go through a doorway or converse with NPCs. Note that you can only talk to other characters when standing next to them, and not directly behind them. You will need to acquire a sword from the dark cellar back in town before searching for a weak wall in the forest to destroy and reveal a passage to the first dungeon.

An easy difficulty setting can be accessed by pressing the left or right arrow key when the intro screen is shown, where players can choose to start the game with four hearts instead of the usual two for normal mode.
~Thanks to IndieGames.com

_________________________________________________________________________________

Stargirl and the Thief From the Exploded Moon

I could type the title of this game all day. (Which is fortunate, because it takes all day to type.) Stargirl and the Thief from the Exploded Moon (gasp!) is a new platformer from Bernie that, according to Bernie himself, is “not much different than the other games [he’s] made.” Which is to say a well put-together retro experience with it’s own special something sprinkled on top.

Stargirl was made in only two weeks, so it’s rather short and there are still a few kinks to be ironed out, but it’s a lot of fun. It’s got a definite SMB2 vibe. Oh, and before you ask, this game is in addition to the other two projects he’s got going… way to go, Bernie!
~Thanks to TIGSource.com

_________________________________________________________________________________

A Game With A Kitty

Ah what a nice title: simply A Game With A Kitty. I can imagine a lot of thought went into choosing the title - but that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. You don't play a game for its title, right? You play a game for the experience. Although the author of A Game With A Kitty claims that it was developed in just a couple of weeks, the game nevertheless looks like a very nice platform game overall.

The story starts out simple enough. The village of our kitty hero seems to have decided that he is to explore the mysterious tower and learn more about it, although, well, the villagers doen't exactly put a lot of trust or faith in our hero. (That's the typical treatment platform heroes get in their villages: no respect.) So now our wannabe hero goes out to discover the truth.

The graphics look pretty good. It is somewhat hard to believe that this was all done in two weeks. They are very nicely done; props to the developer. The backgrounds look nice; they fit the mood of the game, although some of them use very similar colours. Soundwise, the game also does a decent job. There are arguably no really annoying sound effects, and the music is all right, too. But in case you disagree, you have the option to turn off the music at any time in the game if you don't want to hear it. Finally, the controls are easy enough to pick up. Unfortunately, you cannot customise the controls, so you're stuck with the default setup. I didn't discover any problems about it, but the author has mentioned there is a possibility that in the future you will be able to customise the controls.

As with most platform games, the difficulty level may be frustrating at first, and navigating through different parts of levels can be a challenge. Especially when you have to do some backtracking in order to get to a different part of the level to collect an item.

Nevertheless, A Game With A Kitty is a fun platform game and I'm glad I got to try it out, so you too should give it a try, despite the odd title.
~Thanks to Abandonia Reloaded

_________________________________________________________________________________

A Game With A Kitty 2

It is no easy job being the King’s Arch Chancellor. Especially when the king is, to put it nicely, not always the best decision maker, or simply put, a competent ruler. Nevertheless, despite putting up with the childish antics of the King, our Arch Chancellor manages to talk his way into a vacation, and soon enough he is able to relax and not have to deal with the king. However, this vacation does not last long at all. Events soon occur which call the Arch Chancellor to action, despite his reluctance to complete them. In AGWAK2: Darkside Adventures, (a so-called sequel to the original fantastic game, A Game with a Kitty, using a similar graphical engine and new characters) this game continues the series in a new environment, with lots of new surprises in store for the Arch Chancellor. AgwaK2: Darkside Adventures brings fantastic artwork, great music, and challenging game play that will test the most hardened game veterans, yet still allow casual gamers to enjoy the charm of this quirky game.

The game starts with the Arch Chancellor resting on his vacation, when the King soon disturbs his rest. The King informs him, that Princess Daphodil had visited the kingdom earlier, and had been playing a game of hide and seek with the King, when she somehow managed to lose her crown. Therefore, the King orders the Arch Chancellors vacation over, and tells him that he has to find her crown. Cursing under his breath, the Arch Chancellor agrees to go look for the crown, despite wishing he did not have to do so. So begins the quest of the Arch Chancellor and his journey to find the lost crown of the princess.

You begin the game by controlling the Chancellor, with the King trailing behind you, as you begin to explore the level and try to advance to the end. Along the way, different signs will offer help, tips, or suggestions to guide you to the next screen. For example, one of the signs will suggest that you use the king’s crown, to bounce yourself to a higher platform. These tips will help ease you into the game as you begin to explore each area, and advance. Along the way, there are many enemies who wish to stop you, and many assorted obstacles and jumps that you must navigate in order to advance. However, you are not defenseless. The Arch Chancellor is able to bounce on enemies heads to defeat them, or by collecting stars from treasure chests scattered throughout the level. He may fire these stars at his enemies (by pressing the control or 'C' key) to defeat them, or to destroy star blocks that may block his passage to another area. With each successful completion of a level (either by finding a key to a secret area or by finding the star at the end of the level), more of the level map will be revealed, which will allow you to proceed to new areas. The Arch Chancellor will also learn new moves, throughout the game, that will aid him in not only defeating different enemies, but also solving different puzzles that he encounters along the way. Such as learning the run move, which allows him to run much faster than he did before.

If you have played A Game with a Kitty, the artwork in the game will seem quite familiar. However, in this game it looks much more polished and more vibrant than it did in A Game with a Kitty. More colours are used in the different environments, enemies look different, and more variety in the scenery of a level, show that this game is quite different from its predecessor. It all looks fantastic, from the first level, to the later levels; each one has its own charm, as you advance to different areas within the game.

The music is excellent. While it does not stand out as much as one might expect, its quiet ambient nature fits in nicely with each scene. It does not interfere with the action on screen and it is subtle enough that you may miss the music as you are playing. Nevertheless, it sounds great and just fits the easygoing nature of the game.

What makes this particular game, different from other platformers is its challenging game play. The game is challenging, not only with the different enemies you will face, but with the different puzzles that also exist, challenging you to advance to different areas, as well collect keys, and different items as well. The challenge is not too difficult I must stress, as it will challenge hardcore gamers and still be an enjoyable experience for casual gamers.

The only minor concern I had with the game was the feel of the controls. It seemed a bit loose in most cases, mostly when picking up objects and throwing them. It will probably take you at least 15 minutes to get a good feel of how the Arch Chancellor moves and attacks in the game, before it feels natural.

In conclusion, this was a fantastic game and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of platforming games in the style of Mario, Sonic and many other characters. This is a worthy “sequel” to its predecessor A Game with a Kitty, so check it out for yourself.
~Thanks to Abandonia Reloaded

_________________________________________________________________________________

Cedric and the Revolution

he length of a game can be both good and bad, in certain cases. Sometimes, developers may end up stretching a game too much, for a variety of reasons. Some may wish to add replay value to their game, or perhaps the story and events that take place, need to be explained in detail, in order for the gamer to understand what is going on. In other cases, short games can be seen as an effort by a developer that may not have had a lot of time to work on the game or had other reasons for keeping a game short.

In this particular case, while Cedric and the Revolution may not be that long of an adventure game, it manages to succeed in getting its point across to the gamer, and fleshing out the story effectively, to allow gamers to get that great satisfaction of beating the game when it is all said and done.

In Cedric and the Revolution, you take on the role of our little hero Cedric, an apprentice in training, or so he thinks. Victor, our big burly blacksmith, who had hired Cedric to be his apprentice, has changed his mind, due to the new taxes that have been levied by the king, on all apprentices that work across the land. Cedric, who had been looking forward to becoming a blacksmith apprentice, is saddened at first, but soon thinks up a plan. Victor and himself will gather others to protest these taxes, and with some luck, perhaps persuade the king to change his mind. So both Cedric and Victor, begin their journey to reverse the burden of the taxes and perhaps help out along the way.

The game looks pretty nice as you explore from area to area. There are vivid colours used in each area, from the harbor, to the king’s castle, and many other areas, all around it looks really good, with its unique style. The story itself is also pretty intriguing. While the concept may seem to be different and perhaps a bit silly, nevertheless, that is the key, it is different from a lot of other stories in the adventure genre, and this helps to make it stand out a bit more from the competition.

The music as well, is quite nice to listen to, as you explore each area. Its above average, and adds to the experience of the game, and many of the tunes do not seem to be out of place, it gets the job done nicely. However, there is not much in terms of sound effects, which the author actually does make a note of during the introduction screen, but that’s alright, as that’s a minor detail, that does not impact on the game.

The game itself is a tad short, but it could be considered a bit longer than some short adventure games. It almost felt that as I was really starting to enjoy what was going on, the game managed to finish. Hopefully at some point in the future, we could see a sequel or something else arise to continue the story.

Nevertheless, this was an enjoyable game and while it is not too long, it still was fun to play and I recommend it to any adventure gamer. Check out Cedric and the Revolution and see it for yourself.
~Thanks to Abandonia Reloaded

_________________________________________________________________________________

Reactor 09
WARNING GAME CONTAINS CUSS WORDS NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN

So Bernie’s new graphic adventure is out! It’s called Reactor 09 and as it turns out it is “mature,” as was foretold.

The game has you playing as a scientist convicted of murder trying to escape a doomed prison with the help of a CO. Throughout the game your decisions will affect the officer’s trust level and, as a result, the arc of the story. There are four different endings in all, though apparently the game itself is pretty short.

Now, Bernie claims he’s not happy with it, but I think he’s probably just nervous with it being his first “adult” title.

Left-click to walk and right-click-and-hold to manipulate the environment, ala Full Throttle. Enjoy!
~Thanks to TIGSource

ASCIIpOrtal is an awesome 2d remake of Portal with ASCII characters for graphics. It's really amazing how he managed to get the gameplay to work so perfectly with the ASCII graphics. There's even a special portal effect that lets you see through a portal. I highly recommend it, everyone download it now. His website also has lots of smaller games but nothing as good as this one. Here's the description from the readme.

Grab your hand-held portal device and enter the test chambers for a non-euclidean good time.

ASCIIpOrtal is a text based puzzle game inspired by the popular video game. In ASCIIpOrtal you overcome challenges by placing portal way-points, joining two points in the map. If they player or any object passes through one portal way-point it will seamlessly exit the other. Since both way-points are the same point on the map the player's view through the portal reflects this and space warps around you as you pass through the portal.

From the main menu you can choose to 'Begin' from the first map, 'Select Level' to visit any level you've already beaten, 'Change Map Set' to load a new set of levels from any map set subdirectory in your ASCIIpOrtal directory, Read the 'Instructions', view the map set's 'Credits', or 'Quit' the game.

Within the game you can use the following keys to play:
Left/Right Arrows . Move Left/Right
Up/Down Arrows .... Move Up/Down or adjust your aim
Number Pad Keys .... Quick Aim.
Z/0 ............... Fire Blue Portal
X/PERIOD .......... Fire Yellow Portal
SPACE/5 ........... Fire 'Next' Portal

ESC/P/F1 .......... Pause Game
F2 ................ Change Portal Render
R ................. Restart Level
? ................. View in Game Help

The goal of each level is to make it to one of exits on the level. Exits appear as an E on a green field.

Bollen is a fun but difficult platformer. The goal is to reach the red flag at the end of each level. The problem is that you can't jump unless you touch either the green ghost creature or a jumppad. You can also switch to fullscreen from the settings menu.

The latest game from the swedish indie-developer Monokey. Bollen (means 'the ball' in swedish) is a cute puzzle/platformer with nice pixeled graphics and very nice oldskool-type music. The goal of the game is to lead Bollen to the red flag. There're enemies (and friends too) on the way however. Bollen can only move left and right and must use the green ghosts or the jumpblocks in order to get to higher places. Collect 25 coins for an extra life and collect the golden cup on all levels to unlock the secret extra stages. Try it out!

Controls:
Move Left/Right = Left/Right key
ACCEPT (in menus) = ENTER
CANCEL (in menus) = ESCAPE

Addicsjon is another great experimental platformer game recently released by Hempuli. This time you control a drug addict who always tries to move to the nearest white pill. The objective is to get through each level while trying to avoid touching any white pills and avoid jumping on innocent people. Or you could play in fun mode where you try and collect all the pills and jump on those evil ghost creatures. Soon you will be hallucinating and the screen will start shaking violently. This game is short with 5 levels but it's very addicting. It also has a great readme that you can see below.

Readme:

Addicsjon
by Arvi 'Hempuli' Teikari
(c) Reactor Products 2009
2009

What is it about?

Addicsjon is a very very silly experimental platformer. I wanted to test what would happen if the playable character actively disobeyed the players commands and tried to break the given rules. The result isn't very enjoyable, I fear, but I think the idea is there.

Your mission is to guide our little drug-addict through 5 levels, each filled with tasty-looking white pills. The druggist tries to desperately get any pills available, even though they just make his condition worse. So, naturally, you have to force him to go to the goal and prevent him from taking those drugs! Also avoiding innocent people might be good.

controls:

Left & Right arrow: move. Your movement speed may sometimes slow down, if the druggist wants to go to the opposite direction. Also, if you let go of an arrow button, the druggist will take command!

Down arrow: if the druggist jumps to get a pill, you can make the jump lower by holding down. Very useful in certain situations!

S: Jump. The druggist can jump also by himself, so be ready for strange situations.

I apologise for the small size and stupid idea of this game.
The music was composed by Konsta Mikkonen at Modarchive!

This game was created with Multimedia Fusion 2, which is a creation of Clickteam.

Just two games today. The River is a puzzle platformer with destructable levels. Nazo Kyougi is a difficult puzzle/riddle game.

The River

The River is a great puzzle platformer where you can almost completely destroy all the levels. You are a caveman who is so afraid of water that if you touch too much water you die. The goal is to use your clubs to tunnel through each level while diverting water so you can reach a shiny orange rock. It's a great game.

The River is a unique and original puzzlegame where you, a caveman, has to divert the flow of the river by breaking rocks etc. Break enough rocks to drain/divert/whatever the water out of you way so you can finish!

Nazo Kyougi

Nazo Kyougi is an extremely difficult puzzle/riddle game. You control a guy who has to find the exit to each room, which is easier said than done. To complete each level, you really need to think "outside the box". This game doesn't have too many levels but it might take you a long time to figure out some of them.

Sorry for posting a bit late. I decided to post a few more today so I can take a break tomorrow. Elimod + Dagros is a puzzle game where you control two monsters at once. Flow is an arcade object dodging game. Move Left is a short platformer. The YoYo Games website seems to be down right now so use one of the alternatives if it doesn't work.

Elimod + Dagros

In Elimod + Dagros you control two different monsters. Elimod (red) is controlled with the keyboard. Dragos (blue) is controlled with the mouse. When playing with Dragos make sure you use the right mouse button often to travel slower otherwise it gets hard to control. To complete each level they must work together to reach the goal. There are two types of enemies. A turret that can shoot Elimod but can be killed by Dagros. A walking robot that can shoot Dagros but can be killed by Elimod. In addition, there are boxes and switches that can only be pushed by one monster and forcefields that stop one monster from traveling through.

Screenshot:

Flow

Flow is just a simple arcade game where you dodge objects. It starts off easy but things get pretty intense after a few minutes.

Just a simple arcade game where you dodge the heads of various geometrical shapes by using the mouse. The most exciting part of this game (to me) is the fact that I have managed to obtain online highscores! See how you rank up against the world!

Move Left

This is a platformer where you have to move left, ;). Just get to the left side of the screen and avoid traps. It's short so it shouldn't take long to complete.

One of those platforming games that rewards experimental players. Due to all the fake walls and spikes and appearing walls and spikes, this platformer has a puzzling side to it. To get 100%, one must find all 20 little vases and get to the big vase at the end, which is worth 5 vases.

Today, we have another game by NAL. It is an great freeware platformer called Innoquous 3 that involves touching arrows to change the direction of gravity. There are 30 levels in three game modes. You can also play a speedrun of all 30 levels as well as a speedrun of the levels in all three Innoquous games. Also, make note of the buttons on the lower left of the main screen to save and load your game.

Innoquous 3 is a platform game in which you can use arrows scattered around levels to manipulate in which direction gravity is pointing. The game uses a smooth mechanic to rotate the view accordingly, making the game seem fluent.

There are 30 brand-new levels in the game, which can be played in one of three game modes - Standard (normal), Conditional (a certain objective must be completed for the level to be passed), and Fiery Floors (where some of the ground has been lethalised, increasing the difficulty). Once unlocked, levels can be returned to as many times as you like thanks to an easy to use level select mechanism.

On top of those, there are two speedrun modes. INQS 30 is a speedrun of all 30 of Innoquous 3's levels. INQS 60 is a speedrun of all three Innoquous games in one go. Fastest times are recorded for you when you save your progress, as well as numerous other statistics, some useful, others less so.

There are also ten trophies to collect for meeting certain game objectives, such as the 100% Completion award. These are displayed on a page in the menu.

The menu itself is designed to be easy to use and as little hassle as possible. Use left or right to switch between items, and click/hover over buttons to interact with them.

On top of all this, on the About You page (where various game stats are displayed) there are two buttons - Sync and Register. Thanks to Unknown Gamer, you can upload your stats online. The Innoquous 3 website will then let you browse the achievements of other users' stats, see ranking tables, etc (at time of writing the website is still a WIP, however, this will not affect any stats you upload - they're safe and sound).

I guess all that's left to say is that I hope you enjoy playing the game. I enjoyed making it.

Today I have two separate stand alone games in which one is the single player version and the other is the multi-player version. Today's game is a platformer titled Elements of Escape. The premise of EoE is that you play as two characters, fire and ice. You must use your skills together in order to advance through the levels. The kicker is that this is also a strategy game in that you only have a limited amount of times you can use your powers. It's not too hard, but still a fun concept. This would be a great time waster for anyone, and great little game to play with your children, or for your children to play with their friends. For some reason, the game has two different versions so you may have to download both if you feel you'd like to play with a friend at some point in time. The downloads are rather small though, so I wouldn't worry about wasting hard drive space by downloading both. Both games come with a level editor, so the lack of levels shouldn't be much to keep anyone from downloading.

As the author states, the game works well in Vista and XP so don't worry about clicking the XP download button. I have 64bit Vista and both games work great.

We decided that it would be better if I post these games now instead of Saturday. Then Whiterabbit will take over Friday and the weekends. Actually, I'm getting a bit lazy so I'll just steal some abandonware dos games and reviews from Abandonia. Ascendancy is a space strategy game and The First Samurai is a fighting/platformer game. Since these are dos games it's best to use Dosbox to run them.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ascendancy

Ascendancy is a truly unique and groundbreaking game. However, it never received the popularity and praise it should have, because it lacked one thing: an adequate computer AI. The lack of challenge unfortunately made it quite boring for experienced players. This overshadowed all the great features and potential Ascendancy had to offer. Thankfully, an AI patch was released which will make the computer much smarter and tougher, and will make this game really shine like it was supposed to from the beginning. You can download this from the extras section.

The game itself is a space strategy game that bears a slight resemblance to the Master of Orion series. However, all the visual/genre similarities are superficial so it would be unfair to call it a MoO clone. You start the game by choosing your race, enemies and galaxy layout. There is a vast selection of races to choose from, each one possessing a unique set of characteristics and a special ability. The race design is very original so playing the game with another race will be a whole new experience. When you have chosen a race, you may also choose a number of opponents, how big you wish the galaxy to be and the overall hostility of other races.

The actual gameplay will involve both micro- and macromanagement. There is an option for automatic micromanagement, but it is questionable whether you wish to turn this on since in the un-patched version, the computer can barely maintain its own colonies. You will have to take care of colonization, defend your systems and planets, research, build facilities and practise diplomacy. Research is probably one of the most advanced features of Ascendancy. The research tree is simply immense. There are countless ways in which you can choose to develop, and each path will lead you to different technologies and discoveries. To make it even more interesting, the tree is also influenced by technologies you can steal from your rivals, and it can be rotated in three dimensions in order to give you a better idea of how you evolved.

Another interesting feature is the building of ships. At the beginning, you will have small ships with only a few slots on which you can place different ship components, but with time you will get bigger ship designs that will allow you to use some creativity in designing. Each ship will have to contain some components such as the engine and generator, but the rest is completely customizable. You may build a slow ship with lots of shielding and powerful weapons, a fast one with light weapons, unarmed scout ships packed with different sensors - it's entirely up to you. This aspect is a lot of fun, but should be used wisely as you will need a fleet with different types of ships in order to successfully protect your territory.

Diplomacy and planet management are pretty straightforward. Each planet has a different set of squares that allow different types of buildings (including facilities for growth, habitation, production and research) to be built on them. However, different species will have different features, so some will reproduce quickly but will lack research capabilities while others will produce quickly but reproduce slowly. You should plan your colonies according to these features in order to maximize your efficiency. Lastly, by using diplomacy you can negotiate peace treaties, exchange maps or knowledge, and initiate warfare. This aspect should not be neglected since some species’ features offer advanced diplomatic skills which will allow you to manipulate your rivals.

As for the graphics and sounds, this is an area in which Ascendancy excels as well. They are easy on the eyes and very attractive. Every species has a few portraits, and buildings and ship components also look extremely neat. The main view is straightforward and easy to navigate, so learning the game navigation will take little time. Music is simply amazing and adds a lot to the overall atmosphere. All in all, you will certainly not be disappointed by this game.

Notes:

Beginners may try the un-patched version, but experienced players of space strategy games should definitely use the AI patch to make the game more exciting and interesting! The game worked flawlessly in DOSBox. I also managed to get it started on Windows XP, but the sound was choppy so I recommend DOSBox for those with processors faster than 1 GHz.

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/221/Ascendancy.html

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The First Samurai

"The Demon King descends from his mountain domain to you, the First Samurai and your master. Defenceless against the Demon's magic, you succumb to his powers, leaving your Master to fight the Demon King alone. Your master falls in combat, dying. But, with his last breath, he summons the Wizard Mage. The Demon King fearing defeat, escapes to the future. Tormented, the young samurai seeks the teachings of the Wizard Mage in the ways of magic. Boiled with revenge and armed with a magical sword, the young samurai follows the Demon King into the future and the unknown..."

With these words, the nicely done intro brings you into Vivid Image’s game The First Samurai. It was published in 1991 for PC, Amiga, C64 and SNES and was a successful answer to games like Shadowdancer and the famous Last Ninja, which had been keeping fans of far-eastern arcade action entertained during the early nineties.

The First Samurai is an arcade platformer, full of action, in which you guide your hero through time – visiting different worlds, mystical to futuristic - on his quest for revenge. Even if the story might not be that original, the great gameplay balances this out very well and provides a bunch of nice innovations.

You control your samurai using the keyboard. You walk, crouch, jump and climb with the cursor keys, and by combining them with space bar, several effective attacks can be performed. As long as the samurai is not holding his sword, you defend yourself with punches and kicks which strike into different directions, but don’t worry, you’re also going to find weapons soon enough. There are daggers and axes, for instance , that can be thrown towards your enemies. The most important weapon is your magical sword, though. It is not only supporting you in encounters, it is also part of a clever energy system. I will come back to this later on.

The levels are quite complex and interestingly structured. Most of the time, you won’t be moving simply straight forward, for your agile samurai is able to climb many of the vertical surfaces or can slip though holes in the ground to access lower areas. Not all of these ways are easy to use, though. Some have to be spotted first and then rocks or such are often blocking the passage and have to be removed by hitting them. But it’s worth the efforts for many nice goodies await you. And threats, of course.

To make sure that the samurai has a hard time venturing the levels, plenty of fierce creatures are crossing his path. To be precise, they run, fly, jump and roll around and give their best to stop the brave hero and to protect their master, the Demon King. The monsters come in a large variety – bats, rats, fire-spitting stone statues or alien-like frogs and even other warriors are only some to be mentioned. Furthermore, there are pretty sneaky traps cutting down your energy, if you are not cautious enough.

Speaking of energy, your samurai will suffer from attacks and traps, no matter how hard you fight. You begin the game with four lifes. Your life energy is indicated by the arm icon on the lower left part of the screen. When the arm has disappeared completely you'll lose a life. You will find numerous items refreshing your energy, such as food baskets or potions, to ensure you won’t be finished off too easily. The developers of the game have thought about something else and that’s connected to your magical sword. As I have mentioned above, your sword is your most important item. Its special magical energy is displayed by the sword icon on the lower right of the screen. Whenever you have destroyed an enemy creature, it releases a glowing, flying star which you absorb automatically. It lets your magical energy rise and the sword icon grows a bit. After having collected enough of this magical energy, your sword will appear in your hand and you can use it. The cool thing is, it’s not only very useful to fight with but it also represents sort of a reserve for your life energy. If, actually, your life energy has been drained too low, your magical energy is reduced and part of it transforms to life energy, preserving you from death – for the time being. When this happens the sword disappears until you have regained enough magical energy to get your beloved weapon back.

Another nice innovation in The First Samurai are ‘resurrection pots’. These pots are distributed throughout the levels and are somewhat similar to checkpoints. To use them you will first need to charge them with some magical energy. As soon as they begin to glow, they’re ready to use. If you succumb during fights, you'll loose a life and will be resurrected at a pot. You can even choose at which pot you want to restart. That eliminates the need to cover old ground after you’ve died and it can be also used to move the hero quickly between different parts of the level. The usage as shortcut can be very helpful, as the game, like I said before, is quite non-linear in certain parts.

The pots are, of course, not the only items supporting you on your quest. There are other magical items which can be picked up (only if enough magical energy is collected). These items can be used to overcome certain areas, which would be otherwise unpassable, like walls of fire, rivers or other similar spots. Furthermore, you have the possibility to get clues for such tasks from the Wizard Mage, whose blue-shimmering face appears from time to time.

But I don’t want to reveal too much in this review, for it’s your fun to explore and discover the world of The First Samurai yourself. I will go into the technical aspects instead now. The game runs perfectly on Dosbox. Sadly, there’s only music during the intro, but at least it’s very good and catchy. The in-game sound effects are nicely done, suiting the overall atmosphere well and don’t get annoying. The VGA graphics are really beautiful to watch and the diversive designs of creatures, effects and landscapes are animated smoothly. The character itself is also very well drawn and animated and it’s a pleasure to watch him fight and move. The only feature I missed, was the cool parallax-scrolling which had been implemented in other versions, but not in the PC-version, although that fact does not reduce the fun playing this game in any aspect.

Although the different attacks of your samurai take a little to get used to, the controls are generally fairly simple and straight-forward. The difficulty of the game is moderate, in my opinion. As enemy creatures are constantly respawning, you’ll be well advised to keep in motion most of the time, but there’s no need to panic since the resurrection pots prove to be a great saving system. You even keep all items you were carrying after you’ve been resurrected.
Nevertheless, this game is by far not easy, so a little practice for the handling is required.

My mind is settled. The First Samurai offers great Arcade-Action and many nice innovations. The beautiful visual appearance, the mixture between moving, fighting, exploring and puzzling and last but not least, the well-balanced yet diverse leveldesign result in many hours of game entertainment! Vivid Image have done an amazing job and even for today’s standards The First Samurai is a very recommendable challenge to all fans of this genre.
Don’t miss it, it’s a clear 5!
