On the theme of Theseus check
THIS out. It's one of those games on the lines of alien shooter. A commercial game that was converted to freeware by the developer sigma three years ago (after I'd purchased it from Refelxive Arcade).

Theseus and the Maze: (4.15MB)

An exploration game made for speed runs. It has both the charm and difficulty of older games.

Theseus and the Maze is a labyrinth platformer. The goal of the game is to find exit from the maze. Final score is calculated upon the time needed to reach it and gems found (there are 100 in total).

As the game progresses you'll "learn" new abilities like double jump for example that will let you reach higher places. There are also save points along the way and friendly creatures who will give you hints. "X" key activates map.

Thanks Delenn

Dave Fillion, the game's author has let me know of a small glitch with the donation button (to get a free map of the game) on the Hasslevania homepage, which is now fixed, but didn't affect donations made using the button on the DXF Games homepage.

The game is much better than the pictures show, as there is such a huge area to explore, extending over round about 110 screens, made up of numerous rooms!

A few of the underwater rooms shown on the map aren't actually there, as development of a Special Edition of H1 was halted so H2 can be developed!

You can get the free map for as little as $1 donation, though you can donate any amount upwards from this to support the development of Hasslevania 2 --- :)

I've run the game in XP and Win 7 without any problems, - except Lol, how to proceed when I got so far! No doubt I'll figure something out! ROFL, I hadn't checked out one of the corridors for a way forward off-screen!

It's well worth getting the map for a $1 donation, as the screens extend for up to 17 screens horizontally and 13 screens vertically. (It may take 24 hours or more to get the map emailed to you, depending on when Dave can check his PayPal a/c.) If you've made a PayPal donation and haven't received the map within a couple of days or so, you can email Dave at dxfgames@gmail.com but please don't request a map without a donation! (You'll have to use something like MS Paint to open the map as it's a very large image!)

I've had an email reply from Dave Fillion, the game's author, saying that he is working hard on Hasslevania 2, and that a release will occur in due course, as soon as Dave can get the game finished and properly tested!

Something to look forward to. :)

Hi Gregg

Thanks, yes, the download link is now corrected. I'd been having a problem with my graphics driver stopping responding (too many tabs open?) and a slipped edit went through for a couple of minutes or so before I could check and correct this! All ok now! :)

Okay...Chazzo am I missing something? Sounds like a great game, but the download 'HERE' links to photosled that has no place to download. The Home Page doesn't appear to have anyplace to download it either. Is it maybe the wrong link there?

Gregg

P.S. I will check back and hope there is a link because it looks like a fun game and I didn't find a DL place when googled.

Thanks Chazzo, will download this tomorrow (nearly 2.30am and I need to crash). Been working on my main computer all evening and into the early hours of the morning after the computer died on me. The computer has been moved down stairs with my new desk, but it was put in a position with very poor ventilation plus I'd neglected to turn my fan on. I though the psu had burnt out (only replaced it bback in Feb/March). so I removed the offending thing and stripped everything that wasn't tied down, gave the insides a through clean out then reassembled. Thankfully it worked again. The psu must have a cut out in case of overheating. (Phew!).

Hasslevania: The Quest for Shuteye (132Mb)

Calling all Castlevania fans, to this (lucky find!) parody tribute game! Ok, so this isn’t Komani, but it’s sure worth a laugh a minute, and offers thoroughly excellent platform gameplay. It features a custom platform engine, and totally original graphics and MIDI music, and the game’s content is entirely original too. It’s a homage/spoof of course to games like Castlevania, Castlequest, and Wizards and Warriors, and suchlike.

You play as Rovert Bellhump, a new homeowner who's bought a new house on the cheap and just found out why - he can't sleep because his new neighbors are causing a rumpus! You see, all our hero really wants is peace and quiet. Unfortunately, tonight is the 100th year a certain you-know-who wakes up and starts making big plans for world domination - and attempting world domination is always very loud and irritating! You embark on a quest to find Count Dracula and tell him to turn it down a bit, volume-wise! Oh well! Such are life’s risks! Ok, so chasing the Count isn’t all fun, and there might be one or two risks involved! In fact Rovert sets out for Castle Hasslevania, not realizing the terrible risks he is going to have to face, nor the chain of almost insurmountable dangers he will encounter; not the least of which is being eaten alive, or at the very least having his neck seriously punctured!

One very particular feature is that there are often multiple paths to reach and collect items, giving exploration a high precedence while playing the game. It’s very much non-linear and there are 6 big boss fights and a final confrontation against the Count himself, as you try to find your way to tackle the noisy Count Dracula and his ‘soul mates’. You go about the castle finding weapons and other items to help you progress, on your quest for a silent and undisturbed night’s sleep! Can you do this before the quiet of dawn - or is that, . . . at the dead of night?

There’s a pyro mace that will burn through thorny passages, the mighty sword of Del Duio (the author’s nickname) that will double your run speed but lower your defences, the ‘Belmont’ whip that will kill the undead in a single hit, iron armor to protect you from spikes and a shield to deflect arrows, nails, and other projectiles, to name but a few! Some gameplay (and comedy!) centers around a little devil, Chris Subdevil, who follows you around; but uses up your skill hearts very quickly when you choose to use the little devil chappie to enhance your powers and/or destroy anything in your path!

There are 5 challenge difficulty levels to choose between (plus an extra hidden difficulty challenge level when you have completed the game), and two optional mini-games ‘Bat Blasters’ and ‘High Rollers’. The game has 19 areas to explore, some of which are hidden. Some are also secret and you have to find ways to access them as well as finding your way to them in the first place. It’s obvious from playing the game (and finding much to enjoy yourself!) that the game’s creator had a lot of fun making this game, and this comes through with some of the little sparkles and nice little touches that beam through and brighten up gameplay from time to time! It may be a 'rough gem' in places with just a few of the voice-overs, but the author’s dedication and brilliance shine through, making playing the game all very thoroughly worthwhile!

You can find out more about the game via the game's home page, including the areas, characters, baddies, weapons, etc.

There’s also a goodly array of enemies and baddies, traps to avoid and treasures to find and collect. The game has delightfully colorful and partly retro graphics and animations, and a great variety of level designs, including underwater levels, mazes and hidden chambers/tunnels. Rule 1, survive to fight another day/night; Rule 2, defeat all Count Dracula’s minions and lieutenants; and last and certainly not least, Rule 3, defeat the dreaded and dreadful Count Dracula! Or somehow get him to up and move shop, if it turns out you can't actually defeat him!

There’s enough here for very many hours of satisfying enjoyment, as you find your way around the castle and its environs, and knock off as many vampires as you can! Who knows, you might get a quiet (but not too quiet!) snooze at the end of it all! Can you hassle Count Dracula and avoid all of the resulting hassles back on you?

120Mb of the download size is voice-overs, and some of the humor is great and very funny, for instance questioning Count Dracula’s lawyer at the castle entrance. There are difficult (and possibly frustrating) locations partway through the game, but nothing that can’t be over-come by wise use of save points and exploring all the locale and all of your options. Besides, defeating Count Dracula was never going to be easy! In fact you’ll deserve more than a good few medals if you do manage to get to defeat this wretched (and noisy!) ‘nuisance’! You may be the first and only chance of defeating the evil Count!

‘Hasslevania 2: This Space for Rent’ (Trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIR8WQEWmsA) is due out as a demo sometime very soon, and will be a cheap purchase for the full Hasslevania 2 game. It is muted that the scenario will be Outer Space, after the destruction of Castle Hasslevania and the escape of Count Dracula, Rovert and Chris Subdevil. There will also be RPG elements alongside the platform structure, more in the way of puzzles, and a much larger game size.

Hasslevania TQFS is staying as freeware, very fortunately. You can also get a screenshots map emailed to you, of Hasslevania TQFS, for as little as a $1 donation.

Hasslevania TQFS is a Macromedia Fusion standalone application, and there's a ReadMe text in the extracted folder with game controls details. The game runs full-screen, or will adjust itself for some monitors. It runs natively in XP. For Vista and Win 7 you might need to use XP SP3 compatibility mode; and select 'run as administrator' for Vista. Some versions of Win 7 might need using XP Virtual Mode. If the game won't run at all, try updating or re-installing your graphics card drivers.

I’m sure we don’t know half of what’s out there - with some real gems and jewels of freeware games, if we’re sometimes just lucky enough to look in the right places!

Thanks WR I've tried this and found it very enjoyable. It starts off fairly easy but I find it does get more difficult than others reviews suggest, or there again, perhaps that's just me! Lol! :)

Nezumiman (18.1Mb)

Nezumiman is an interesting and very enjoyable 2D platform game that mimics or parodies Megaman 3; while having innovative and original levels, and artefacts of its own making. Though to a degree lacking the difficulty of the Megaman series, a difficult mini-game is unlocked on completing the main game which partly makes up for this.

A rat named Nezumi sets out to do battle with the evil fish Dr. Gyoniku,. However, in order to reach Dr. Gyoniku’s stronghold, Nezumi must first defeat his henchmen, seven of whom are his ’ fellow ‘ mice. The eighth is a kangaroo (?!).

The game has you fighting as a rat against various often strange creatures, rather than against robots. The rodent Rat Man has a teddy bear-like head and the game has cute graphics to match. It should be good for at least an hour or two’s play depending on your platforming and shooting skills. Rat Man has just about all of the Megaman’s moves, including a sliding manoeuvre, to match.

Although there are some platform based challenges, the majority of the game involves dodging and shooting enemies. Each of the selectable 8 levels has a boss to shoot and kill. Power-ups give you differing types of projectile weapons, and each boss you defeat gains you extra powers. The boss patterns though original, are fairly straightforward and shouldn’t give too much trouble. Weapons often have other uses later, after the fighting stages, which is all very much to the good. Avoid enemy projectiles while still on-screen. There are also enemies that are near impossible to avoid, causing health damage additional to that caused by your mistakes! Bonus lives are available, though you start off with just one life. If you lose a life it restarts from fairly close by in the level depending on how far through the level you are.

The game is not without challenges though, for instance shooting ice stalactites and jumping accurately on to these, avoiding spikes that are one hit instant death! It does have a useful save feature once you have completed a level, if you prefer to play it through in more than one go. There’s also a hidden extra level that is unlocked by playing through all of the main levels, after completing which, you also get access to the mini-game.

The level designs are very fresh and original. One level for instance has the ground moving in waves, where you have to jump from crest to crest. The art direction and sense of humour are particularly memorable and noteworthy, with things like enemy DJ mice firing from giant speakers, a giant hostile windmill, and Dr. Gyoniku’s fortress, which has to be seen to be believed! Parodies abound and as well as obvious Megaman ones, look out for ones from Mario and Ghosts ’n Goblins to name just two, amongst many!

The graphics are great and very colorful, and there’s tuneful catchy (ogg) music to play along to. The window size can be altered via the resolution setting in the game’s config exe (the smaller exe file) in the game folder. It plays in XP, Vista and Win 7. You may wish to rename the game folder and the game and config file to something more recognisable! IE9’s new multilingual update allows the Japanese manual to be displayed correctly should you wish to Google translate the manual, into very ‘pigeon’ English I might add!

The ‘Z’ key is used to select, start the game and jump, ‘X’ key to shoot and ‘Arrow’ keys to move L/R/Crouch/go Up/Down ladders. and the game is gamepad /joystick compatible. ‘C’ key for weapons (and info) menu, once extra weapons are acquired.

Although not the hardest platformer ever, it isn’t a walkover by any means. It’s refreshingly different and great engaging fun to play!

Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRuwS-waH1k ------ (Video walkthroughs available on YouTube)

Download HERE ----- (Use the second download link as the first is no longer available.

Nikujin ( < 1Mb)

Want to play a fairly tough, fast-paced 2D side-scrolling fighter platform action game? Nikujin (pronounced Nee Koo Jeen) will take you some time to learn, with all the different moves and tricks you can learn; then present you with some very hard-hitting battles! It’s by Ikiki - I hope to post a top-down espionage game ‘Hakaiman’ by the same author shortly.

The goal of this wonderful game is to progress through the increasingly difficult Ninja fortress using maximum cunning and skill! And where necessary, inflicting maximum damage on your adversaries!

The best part of this game is all the true Ninja moves you can learn. Things like running and zig-zagging up walls, running very fast, landing with your sword down on enemies’ heads, then bouncing off the ceiling, and such-like! You also have to use stealth, tact and strategy, as sometimes fighting head-on all the time will just get you killed. This does make for a complex and more difficult, but ultimately more fun game. So sometimes sneaking past enemies is more appropriate, but if they see you, you’ll have to fight! As a true Ninja you only have one weapon, a sword; otherwise, only moves, and your hands and feet!

The bare hands and bare feet is taken literally as this Ninja (and all the others!) doesn’t seem to be able to afford clothes, though all you see is a cartoony outline! Has someone Nee'K-ed all their pantz?!

There are also some very creative physics-type puzzles. So you have to observe and deduce, and watch enemy movements; then carry out moves very accurately, in exact places and at very exact times to get past some obstacles. Whether he’s a clumsy Ninja or very agile and adept is up to you!

It does get quite difficult at from just level 2 on (10 levels in total), so it’s great for experienced gamers but much more challenging for casual players. You have infinite lives, and restart the stage you are on if/when you are killed. Some enemies will dispatch a throwing star from a distance at you as soon as they see you (indicated by an '!' on-screen). There’s a more and more difficult boss to fight at the end of each level.

Hazards include bottomless pits, Ninja assassins, leg-breaking falls, bamboo spikes, suicidal powder-keg lugging kami-kazes and even a famed Musashi (very expert swordsman) wannabe soldier. Master all of these then get killed at the start of the next level as other enemies and hazards/obstacles present themselves! Platforming sometimes takes precedence over fighting!

Purist Ninjas might want to keep use of the sword to a minimum! Most of the rest of us will be all too ready to go out sword-fighting for maximum effect! In return you can take a maximum of 5 enemy hits before your character is killed. You can restore health points by attacking and defeating adversaries.

The in-game menu is navigated using the ‘Arrow’ keys and the ‘Shift’ key to select. For the game you use ‘Arrow’ keys to move, ‘Shift’ key to jump and the ‘Ctrl’ key to use your sword.

You’ll have to learn moves by experimenting, for instance pressing ‘Shift’ jump, together with the ‘Up’ and ’ L/R’ arrow keys will perform a special jump. ‘Arrow’ keys for normal movement.

The menu is in Japanese but is easy to navigate. First choice starts the game proper, second is continue, next available choice is a (difficult! - but useful for training!) time-trial mode, and the fourth choice is a survival constant attack mode. The last choice is a high score table. The ‘Esc’ key should take you back to the menu. You might need to use 'Alt + F4' or ‘Ctrl + Alt + Del’ to stop the game and restart it to make an alternative choice in the maximised window mode. There are various options including changing controls using the (Japanese!) drop down menus.

Menu Summary: -

New Game
Continue
Tutorial/ Time Trial
Survival - - - - (Protect your sleeping Sensei from endless waves of enemies)
High Scores

The game saves your progress for each completed level, allowing you to recommence later, at the stage where you have got to, provided you’ve finished at least one level!

It is (rumoured) possible that there are hidden bonus levels if you complete the main game proper in one continued play-through, but you might have fun trying to access these without wrecking your keyboard!

The game plays in XP and Win 7 and should hopefully play in Vista. The music is some very catchy midi tunes. Playing it in 640x480 compatibility mode and maximising the window will let you play it somewhat larger. If your firewall objects because of the Japanese based exe characters, either rename the file or add the game exe to the firewall’s trusted files.

It runs from the extracted folder and is called é+é¡éÂé±.exe. Rename this to eg ‘Nikujin.exe’ or 'game.exe' if you wish!

The game has a minimalist approach to graphics, with a simplistic animated style, and sparsely decorated levels. But it is far deeper a game than first impressions might give or persuade, and enemies come thick and fast all the very too soon! It also takes a very great deal of skill and practice to navigate some parts of the fortress.

It’s a fairly difficult but fun fighting game to master and progress through! Excellent!

I’ve slipped in an extra post for today as no doubt many of you will have already met with and played as Octodad as it’s been around for a little while. 'Grief' on the other hand is a newly out game for the PC.

Grief (14.4Mb)

'Grief' is a free puzzle platformer with twenty levels. It's title is based on a girl's grief at missing all her favorite Teddy bears. It takes between two and three hours to play, but by design doesn’t have a save progress option throughout the game. So if you run out of time in hand, or find one level particularly difficult, the game can indeed cause you grief! Starting from the beginning again later can be notably painful, mind-wise, though there is an option to restart the present level while playing!

Seasoned puzzlers might complete the game in about an hour or an hour and a half. The game includes a brief tutorial during the early levels. You play as a young girl befuddled by the loss of her favourite toys. Her emotions and outlook interestingly affect various aspects of the game and her view of the world. Finding her lost toys of course restores clarity and happiness to her mind!

Personally I hope in time, the game author will provide a save game feature as firstly, some people don’t have a couple of hours or more to spare on one computer game, and secondly, it’s no fun if you constantly get stuck in one spot and have to later restart again and play through the previous levels just to get past the troublespot for you in the game. There is a pause option though, which I find essential after some hard concentration with the puzzles, and much needing a break!

The game does have good unique features of its own. There are special platforms that switch between two worlds, one light, and the other dark, where the layout differs partly between the worlds. These represent optimism/pessimism state, and depending on your optimism/pessimism state, you may be able to jump higher or squeeze into smaller spaces or have your abilities reduced depending on your present situation. An orange glowing area accesses the optimistic side of the level, where you can jump higher and also step on golden platforms. In the same way, entering the bluish purple portal accesses the pessimistic land of dreary blues and shorter jumps, but giving you the added ability to be able to crawl. There are other emotions such as confusion that can also affect alter the worlds or play. New items are introduced as you proceed through the levels including boxes you can push, ghosts you need to avoid and black orbs to collect with special characteristics/properties.

Each stage has a Teddy bear to find, whence you guide the young girl to the level exit. You don’t need to find all of the lost toys to complete the game. The stages start off easy enough but gradually get more and more challenging with some really clever puzzles to solve.

Some options i.e. particle effects, sound effects and music can be turned on or off in-game using the ‘B’, ‘N’ and ‘M’ keys respectively. If the game runs slowly, try turning off the particle effects - if you have a slower PC, or turn off background applications or reboot. You can restart a level with the ‘R’ key and pressing the ‘Esc’ key once will pause/resume the game.

Use ‘W,A,S,D’ keys to move and ‘K’ as the action key to open doors and portals.

The graphics are excellent and the music is outstanding and extremely atmospheric. You can also download the soundtrack from the first download link below at GameJolt, to play the brilliant music apart from the game if you would like to do so.

See if it gives you more pleasure than grief! Gameplay is very addictive and it very definitely deserves a place in your game download folder!

You're all welcome. I also found a game similar to Beat Hazard, but it's more of a proof of concept demo. You can only dodge bullets that get generated from your music. I'll have to post it later.

thanks rO :)

Looks like a well made game. Looking forwards to trying it out. Got a little distracted with the latest indie game over at Steam called Beat Hazard, a brilliant space arena shooter that works in conjunction with music. The faster and louder the music the more enemies you have to contend with. So will check this out later today. :)

p.s.
yeah I must post some games too. I've been enjoying my new found spare time since stopping my regular postings. Still got a mass of games in my to post folder. :)

oooh...I really like the idea, thanks.
On a side note, I really need to post some games...some good ones coming up!

**EDIT: Heh, just finished it. Great game to get distracted for 30 minutes. Tower 5 (out of 5) is actually really hard. My only complaint is partially my fault...I kept on mixing up the jump/teleport buttons**

Teleportower is a puzzle platformer with one interesting mechanic - the screen is split into two rooms and you can teleport between the rooms at any time. There are 50 levels but it doesn't take very long to complete each room so it's still a bit short.

Teleportower is a puzzle platformer with fifty levels to play, split evenly between the five towers that you have to visit in order to beat the game. The objective here is to collect a blue gem located in the final room of each tower, but to do that you would first have to overcome a series of increasingly difficult challenges designed to thwart the efforts of any brave adventurer who attempts to loot the treasures within.

Our hero can jump, cling to the edge of a platform, or use his teleportation ability to switch between the two rooms in every stage. A trap could appear in one room and not the other, so you would need to alternate between both of them regularly in order to beat a level.

The size of the application window is increased by changing the display setting inside the configuration menu, accessible via the second option shown at the main screen.
Ok, I think I might have tricked too many people. I'll just say that these games may not be completely normal. It might actually be closer to the opposite...

The Normal Super Mario Bros Series is a series of short, single level remakes of the NES mario games created in Game Maker. All these games are completely normal in case you couldn't tell from their names. No, I'm not trying to trick you, these games are 100% normal. ;)

Normal Super Mario Bros.

This game is an exact remake of World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros 1. I know, it's very boring and normal. So have fun playing it!

As you can see this game is completely normal

Controls:
Arrows - Move & Jump

Normal Super Mario Bros. 2

The normality continues in NSMB2. This time you play as Toad in a remake of World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros 2. It's nothing you haven't seen before.

This game is also completely normal, screenshots don't lie

Controls:

Normal Super Mario Bros. 3
