Of course they're not going to sell the photos - they don't own them. What they are going to sell is access to the photos via their self-granted perpetual license.

But I don't understand the outrage... what did people think was going to happen? You store your photos, and all sorts of personal information, on a 3rd party server and don't understand that "free" can have a very high cost? The only value that Facebook (or other similar service) has is your personal info. It's the ability to match your email address, your IP address, all your various log-in IDs, your phone number to you and sell that information to advertisers (or give it to the Feds). Facebook is data mining gold; or, more aptly, fool's gold.

Remember "War Games" - The only winning move is not to play.

Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos

In its first big policy shift since Facebook bought the photo-sharing site, Instagram claims the right to sell users' photos without payment or notification. Oh, and there's no way to opt out.

Instagram said today that it has the perpetual right to sell users' photographs without payment or notification, a dramatic policy shift that quickly sparked a public outcry.

The new intellectual property policy, which takes effect on January 16, comes three months after Facebook completed its acquisition of the popular photo-sharing site. Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out.

Under the new policy, Facebook claims the perpetual right to license all public Instagram photos to companies or any other organization, including for advertising purposes, which would effectively transform the Web site into the world's largest stock photo agency. One irked Twitter user quipped that "Instagram is now the new iStockPhoto, except they won't have to pay you anything to use your images."

I think we should put this thread to bed. It's just curiosity that makes us want to see who we are enjoying spending time with and becoming friends with. If there is still an interest in exchanging photos we could arrange to meet in a thread like http://www.tangler.com/ where they allow members to request contact with one another. Do you think this is a good compromise?

second, the 'generic' factor of pre-teens.

and what exactly is the big deal about probably (certainly uncertain) outdated photos, or even current ones?

I 'get' the weirdos but how likely is it to actually be a problem, considering we can't convince most grasshoppers to post questions in the forums at all? or check back, for that matter?

Not sure if I totally understand the original premise - but wouldn't the associated problems mentioned (ie: a recognizable photo of oneself loose on the internet) be eliminated if - just for fun - we limit the age of the person - at the time the photo was taken - to "under 10 years old" or so?

It's not exactly what was originally intended, but might be safe fun (unless I totally misunderstood what we're talking about - a distinct possibility!).

After that post above, I'm thinking this game could attract a lot of weirdos. Maybe we shouldn't do it. It's apparent that anyone can join the forums. Just because the regulars are only ones posting that doesn't mean there aren't hundreds of lurkers. I watched the forum for almost a year before really getting onto it.

Funky - If we would have an account for everyone to use, we would have to post the log in information in the forum for all to see. Anyone visiting the forum would have access to the account.
