Kill the Password: Why a String of Characters Can’t Protect Us Anymore
You have a secret that can ruin your life.

It’s not a well-kept secret, either. Just a simple string of characters—maybe six of them if you’re careless, 16 if you’re cautious—that can reveal everything about you.

Your email. Your bank account. Your address and credit card number. Photos of your kids or, worse, of yourself, naked.

First thing I do? Search for the word “bank” to figure out where you do your online banking. I go there and click on the Forgot Password? link. I get the password reset and log in to your account, which I control. Now I own your checking account as well as your email.

This summer I learned how to get into, well, everything. With two minutes and $4 to spend at a sketchy foreign website, I could report back with your credit card, phone, and Social Security numbers and your home address. Allow me five minutes more and I could be inside your accounts for ?

The common weakness in these hacks is the password.

The age of the password has come to an end; we just haven’t realized it yet.

Passwords are as old as civilization. And for as long as they’ve existed, people have been breaking them.

In 413 BC, at the height of the Peloponnesian War, the Athenian general Demosthenes landed in Sicily with 5,000 soldiers to assist in the attack on Syracusae. Things were looking good for the Greeks. Syracusae, a key ally of Sparta, seemed sure to fall.

But during a chaotic nighttime battle at Epipole, Demosthenes’ forces were scattered, and while attempting to regroup they began calling out their watchword, a prearranged term that would identify soldiers as friendly. The Syracusans picked up on the code and passed it quietly through their ranks.

the watchword allowed their opponents to pose as allies. Employing this ruse, the undermatched Syracusans decimated the invaders, and when the sun rose, their cavalry mopped up the rest. It was a turning point in the war.

How to Survive the Password Apocalypse

Until we figure out a better system for protecting our stuff online, here are four mistakes you should never make—and four moves that will make your accounts harder (but not impossible) to crack.—M.H.

A Lie That’s Good for Password Security

The other day, for some inexplicable reason, a Web site that uses responses to personal questions as password protection stopped accepting one of my answers. “It just doesn’t seem to like this word anymore,” the tech assist told me.

But how many different ways can you answer a question like, “What was the first car you owned?” Obviously, I couldn’t change the first car I owned (unless my current car is a time-traveling DeLorean).

But she made a brilliant point. Since the Web site doesn’t know if my answer is correct, I could put in anything. In fact, she pointed out, a good security tip is to answer incorrectly.

"Im getting paid!" - Websites hosted on WordPress hacked due to users' poor password security
The alert was initially raised by The Hacker News (THN) and Sucuri, after some blog owners received messages from WordPress.com telling them that their passwords had been reset.
One affected WordPress.com user told THN that he had discovered hackers had published a page containing a money-making advertisement (pictured below).

Somehow I missed this beta.So I was about to ask BuBBy about the new features that could be expected in Sticky Password 6, when I noticed the new version was already released on May 22th.

Full change log over here.
The refurbished interface looks quite neat and (even) more user friendly.
And Lamentine Software has a great offer for current Sticky Password Pro 4 & 5 users if they're willing to update.
(a bit off topic too.. but worth mentioning,I guess)

Same thing happened to me glasseye. Overwrote an earlier version and now find it's reverted to a demo. Thankfully I have another paid for password application (though not as good) so will just have to wait till it's given away again. If it appears on BitsDuJour it'll probably be worth purchasing.

As Graylox has said many times (well, words to the effect), if you missed the giveaway or have had to format you drive, replace the hard drive or reinstall Windows for whatever reason; if you find you can't live without the program, the best way forward is probably to purchase it. You can always contact the developer and negotiate a deal. some developers are quite amenable to that. I've done it several times and ended up with some fantastic deals and in some cases they have even given me a free registration code.

Now I only have a Limited TRIAL V.5 instead of a FULL V.4 that worked very well. On a limited budgit I can only cry and use TRIAL version. Not always wise to UPGRADE to a newer version if happy with older! NOT ALL CO. do what they offer, do they? Authoring REP. Co. SITE has not even answered my why-not EMAIL. "my glasseye"

Yeah, old graylox is back!
Welcome home, I missed you. ummmh - is that a sign of a split personality?

It seems, the reorganisation of the site had at least made a *lox happy :)

Addendum:
At second view, I'm still logged in as notblocklox - it's better I sleep a night over this, I hate to make decisions of such importance at 01:26 AM :P

Thank you very much! I was thinking of changing my username for a while, never got around to it, good I didn't - I could've spent a whole day to figure it out (probably even longer, alright - I admit :-)) and you just saved me the precious time. All the best and thanks again! Love, Michela

Thanks, Webmaster. I never would have guessed that one. I had never entered a First or Last name, so there was only one option on the drop-down menu. And it didn't occur to me that anyone would want to use their "real" First or Last Name as a username (I know, I'm just too literal for my own good sometimes!)

So far, already one person has asked me how on earth did I change my username, so I'll write it down.

So, click on your name at the top of the page (you know, Welcome, Name (click on name))
So push edit, and in the First Name, or Last Name bar, enter the new username of your choice!

Now push "Update Profile". Now push "Edit again". Under, "*Display name as:" push your new name!

That's it! I hope this helps whoever wanted to know this!
-Webmaster
NOTE: YOU STILL SIGN IN AS YOUR OLD NAME, YOU JUST APPEAR AS THE NEW NAME!
