Ballman Planets (20.5Mb)

Ballman Planets has close association with gameplay wise, and is made in tribute to the Mega-Popular Classic all-time favorite Pacman that everyone’s played and heard of. You’ll have to decide for yourselves how classic Ballman Planets is in style and gameplay! It’s certainly a very innovative derivative!

You roam the (3D) surface of spherical planets collecting (uh-um yellow) food dots and of course there are power-ups and ghosts to chase/chase you. You have to make it to the colored target to get bounced to the next planet. Each new planet is bigger than the previous one, and there are five planets at the moment. You get bounced back to the initial planet from the fifth one, so you can revisit the planets in order as long as you have lives left.

The graphics are excellent and there’s bright cheerful arcade music/super sound effects to play along to. Whether the ghosts will instil the same fear in you as those from PacMan, only time and playing the game will tell!

You get five lives per game, and your tally for food and power-ups is shown onscreen along with your current score. Unlike Pacman there isn’t any way to morph to a different part of the planet’s surface, but there are (coil-type) springs which will jump you between planets, from one planet to the next one! The planets vary in size (affecting your walking speed) and have a day/night shadow pattern as you move around. Some of the planets have luxuriant trees and vegetation. The biggest difference from PacMan apart from the 3D is that you can only see the part of the planet you are on, that is facing you, which does complicate matters!

The animations are brilliant with your Pac figure walking as the planets rotate in whatever direction you are moving. Did I mention Dizzy? The ghosts have different incarnations, again brilliantly rendered and animated; Also different characters and behaviour patterns. You get an illuminated trail while under power-up and able to chase ghosts but a power-up doesn’t last nearly long enough, unless there are some ghosts close-by!

You control your direction with the mouse, and walk using the left mouse button. Expect to need a bit of practice to get used to walking around and quickly getting where you intended to go!

Amazingly it’s been programmed from scratch in less than three weeks, with its own 3D engine, AI engine, Physics, and file system - all entirely by the game’s authors! In time the authors hope to add new planets to explore and add new features to the game! There is a high score table ingame too.

I’m listing the Game Requirements as it’s a bit higher than for many freeware games ie:-
Pentium IV minimum (about 1.4GHz+ CPU); Windows XP, Vista or 7; Graphics card with OpenGL 2.0 shader support; 512 Mb of RAM memory; 72 Mb of hard disk space; NVidia graphics card is recommended though not essential.

{As usual if you have Vista or Windows 7, install to eg C:\Games - folder NOT Program Files to avoid the need to have to right click and run as administrator! Or not being able to play it from a non-admin account in Vista/Win 7!}

Anaglyph screenshots (view with red/blue glasses)

The game also has an anaglyph mode - you know 3D using red/blue glasses, though anaglyph personally soon gives me a headache! So I’ll probably be playing it mostly in normal mode! Hope the anaglyph mode doesn’t give me motion sickness! In anaglyph (stereoscopic mode) it can be difficult to tell which way is ‘forwards’! You can change modes mid-game by pressing the ‘Esc’ key.

Check your screen resolution first (right click on desktop etc) if you wish to change this in-game otherwise you might get oval rather than spherical planets! You may need to close any memory-intensive programs before running the game. If you get any problems, reboot. It doesn’t seem to like playing more than one game session per computer session! This has resulted to be completely honest, in Win 7 Ultimate x32 in having to uninstall, reboot and reinstall, but as the install only takes a few moments it’s been worth it, as it is a thoroughly excellent game otherwise, so it isn't a 'deal-breaker'.

The normal 3D perspective does give a really different feel to the game though! I have to admit that to begin with, at least, I found moving around the spherical planets quite disorientating, - and with ghosts for instance sometime appearing upside down on the lower planet surface. The ghosts AI doesn’t give you much room for navigation mistakes, as they are on you very quickly if you don’t get out of the way. This does make the game difficult to play initially and the mouse is very sensitive for changing direction, which takes getting used to. After a few goes I was much better in setting my direction of movement!

The game may not have you jumping through hoops backwards, but it will sure have you (literally) running round in circles. Hope it doesn’t make you too dizzy!

By way of recommendation, if one is needed, Ballman Planets already has some worldwide popularity and repute!

Unlike PacMan itself, some levels are quite short, but if you love Pacman (and who doesn’t?!) you’ll surely like Ballman Planets. It’s an addictive and highly entertaining game, once you ‘find your feet’ on the planet surfaces!

Yoo-Hoo look out - Ghosties coming (3 or 4 at once!)

That makes a total of 34 games we've posted between us for New Years Day, lol. Not a bad haul at all, lol. There are some classic games anongst that bunch. At least 6 or 7 of the games are definitely must have - couldn't live witout, games; the rest are okay to excellent as well. Of the ones I posted, there was only a couple I didn't find particularily entertaining, the rest will be staying in my freeware folder for sometime to come.

Sim City Classic,
=======================================================================

The original SimCity was released in 1989. It was one of the most innovative titles of its time, allowing the gamer to plan, build, and maintain a city from scratch. The 1994 Windows port went largely unappreciated, and after failing to sell well in stores, SimCity Classic was pulled from the shelves shortly after the release of the sequel SimCity 2000 in 1995. This is very unfortunate, as it was the best version of one of the most original and imaginative series of all time.

You start out with nothing but a bit of money, and a piece of land, and it's your job to create and maintain a city. As City Planner, you choose what goes where: residential, industrial, and commercial zoning as well as transit and power. You need to maintain equilibrium to keep your city flowing smoothly; each type of zone relies on the other, and you must create the perfect balance.

The first step is usually to create a power plant: nothing runs without power. Then you must lay out zones. However, zones won't develop unless they have adequate transit available, such as roads and railways; and of course, they need connection to your power source. Eventually, as your city grows larger, you will need police and fire protection and more of everything: more power plants, more zones, more transit; continually building outward from where you began. However, there is much, much more to worry about.

You also act as Mayor, raising and lowering taxes, as well as providing adequate funding. Raise your taxes too high and nobody will want to live or work in your city, lower them too much and expect to be broke before you know it. Again, you must maintain the correct balance depending on the situation you are in. Simply building more and more will come to no effect unless you correctly balance your budget.

Then throw in natural disasters, everything from fires, to earthquakes, to floods, and the occasional gigantic reptilian monster. You do have the option to disable these calamities, but where's the fun in that? You may find yourself intentionally destroying buildings to keep fires from spreading, or building fire stations directly in their path. Anything and everything goes when trying to save your creation from ruin.

There is no way to win this game. You do have an approval rating which rises and falls each year depending on how well you run your metropolis, but it does not end, and there is no way to 'beat' the game. Yet, that is what makes SimCity Classic so great. It is a true simulation: you wouldn't be able to simply stop maintaining a city in real life. As long as you stay interested, and you likely will, you can keep upgrading and changing your city.

In the case that you do want to try something different, there are some excellent built in scenarios you can try. From the famous 1944 bombings in Hamburg, to the not-so-famous monster attack in 50's Japan, it is now your job to save real-life cities from Armageddon. They won't keep your interest for that long, and you probably won't want to play each one twice, but they are a welcome change.

The graphics in the game are never overwhelming; it’s always easy to see what you are working at, and what needs to be done. The controls are far superior to the original DOS version and the sounds are good, and the music is absolutely excellent - a nice jazzy soundtrack which never gets old. As a kid, I spent hours playing this wonderful game as well as the sequel SimCity 2000. It never gets old, and should keep you interested for quite a while. There is no way I could rate this game below 5, and I'm sure many of you would agree.

Tom and Jerry
This is a really fun platform (jumping) game where you're Jerry, the mouse, and you have to climb through the basement, pipes, walls, bathroom, attic, etc. of a house to rescue your little nephew Tuffy. Of course, Tom, the cat, is out to stop you.

Tom & Jerry was released commercially (yes, in a box, sold in stores) by Hi-Tech Expressions, probably my second favorite place to work. Hi-Tech went out of business a long time ago due to not concentrating on core competencies, like paying me lots of money to make fun games. :)

Jerry in mid-air in the first level. Jerry can throw drops of water (the blue balls) and stun insects and things.

The second level. The snails are fairly harmless but you have to hit them twice. There's also pincher bugs that move very fast and you ALSO have to hit them twice. The little jar of invisible ink gives you temporary invulnerability.

These red bugs are good for jumping on, they're like trampolines.

Anyway, there's 10 different levels and 5 boss screens where you have to git' Tom.

If you've ever dreamed of playing air hockey from the point of view of the paddle, then today is your lucky day! 3D Cyber Puck allows you to do just that in its 3D first person view perspective on the game of air hockey. The primitive 3D graphics do a decent job of displaying the playing field, and there are a variety of different weapons and powerups that you can buy with credits you win. However the game itself is not very deep so replay value will likely be limited.

As usual, DOS games!
Pac-Man
I decided to post this, as a sort of sequel to Ms. Pac PC.

Made in 1983 Pac-Man became to be a timeless classic. IT was ported to probably every know machine and has inspired numerous clones over the years (And still does, just look at all the flash games that are nothing more then clones of this one).

But here is the one and only original Pac-Man, that was made for the PC Booter, but you can get the DOS version of it.

The plot is very simple. You're a hungry little mouth opening and pallet gobbling circle chased by four ghosts in a maze. Your goal is to gobble up all the pallets without being caught by any of the ghosts, unless you swallow a power-pallet which enables you to chomp the ghosties and send them back to the rectangle in the middle of the screen.

Every now and again a good (a cherry or a strawberry) will appear and you can swallow that too for more points. And that's about it.

The good thing is that the game starts off quite easy, the ghosts are slower then you are, they aren't directly chasing you, but moving randomly around (otherwise it would be too easy for them to corner you) and you can also pass through the secret passage on the left and right edges of the maze (then again, so can the ghosts).

The game allows you to play either with the keyboards or with the joystick and the color palette doesn't burn your eyes away (even though the game features only 4 color CGA graphics). There are also sounds to the game (not much, but there are). So the game has it all that a 1983 developer could have offered I guess, plus incredible addictives.

Go ahead, download it, I dare you! You'll see that no mater how used you are to modern fancy 3D realer the real graphics and mind-blowing sound effects, this game will still be able to get you hooked!

Pacmania:
This is almost the same as pac man, above, but a little better in graphics. You can judge which is better...

Got an oldskool IBM PC or compatible? Want some fun? Eeeeexcellent. Remember Pacman? Well, today, we bring you Pacmania, another one of those we-would-never-dream-of-cloning-that-other-popular-game-games.

Actually, Pacmania comes pretty close, if not closest, to the original. You can see it as a port to IBM PC architecture. You know, CGA graphics, PC Speaker sounds, all that stuff that makes any game sound and look annoying. And still, you’ll want to play it over and over.

The graphics and sound of Pacmania are, as mentioned, the things that would make Pacmania annoying. They’re not even good or anything, they’re just catchy. And that’s all you could expect from a game from that period.

The gameplay of Pacmania really makes up for the rest of it. Pacman is, was, and always will be one of the most-enjoyed, most-remembered, and most well-made games of all time. It’s just fun. The controls couldn’t be easier, the objective is as simple as it could be, and it’s just fun. Need I say more?

4 out of 5 points. Because of those darn annoying jingles the game plays when you die and stuff. You probably know what I mean, anyway.

Constructor

Be sure to speed up the game play in this, by pushin control+F12.
Constructor is a building game in which the purpose is to build buildings, make cash, and complete a series of objectives. You have only 5 maps to play on, which is a major disadvantage. Constructor is very humorous and doesn't have a shred of seriousness, so if you dislike funny games this is not for you.

Constructor is deep and has many features, including the ability to use police, mobsters, and gadgets to help you defeat your opponents and make your residents happy. If your residents become unhappy, they will leave and stop bringing in cash and extra workers (which build buildings and convert into repairmen and gangsters) and tenants (which populate your buildings). Workers can also take over buildings and attack enemy workers. Repairmen have the sole task of repairing your buildings whereas gangsters can attack enemies much more effectively than workers, and are the only people that can attack buildings.

Constructor's AI is extremley ruthless and will not hesitate to build on your land, take over and destroy your buildings, and generally wreak havoc. The graphics are extremely well-done for such a primitive engine. The sound is well done, although it isn't the best quality. This game is fun is because it oozes charm and is surprisingly addictive once you get into it.

Constructor has several downsides as well. While the interface is generally easy to use, it has a extremely annoying obmission; you cannot use the right mouse button to move your workers, which can get very annoying when you are trying to build up an area quickly before the AI moves in. Also, the game does not have much variety, and once you exhaust the initial charm and fun, it quickly becomes boring.

Overall Constuctor is an extremely fun game while it lasts. It works well in dosbox, but make sure you disable the video animations, as some are missing.
