Opera has suspended ad-serving on its portal as a precaution while it investigates reports that surfers were being exposed to malware simply by visiting the Norwegian browser firm's home page.

Malicious scripts loaded by portal.opera.com were redirecting users towards a malicious site hosting the notorious BlackHole exploit kit, said a Romanian anti-virus firm BitDefender

"The hidden and obfuscated piece of code in the Opera Portal homepage inserts an iFrame that loads malicious content from an external source," BitDefender explains. "If the Opera user hasn’t changed their default homepage, active malicious content is loaded from a third-party website whenever they open their browser."

The Rainbow add-on generates files for video and audio data in either Theora or Vorbis formats respectively, storing them in an Ogg container. The files are accessible through the document object model (DOM) via the HTML5 file API, which can then be used to upload the files onto a server.

Mozilla provides sample code to show how simple the whole process is, and coming in at less than 30 lines, it's hard to argue against the outfit's claims.

However, the idea of browsers being able to record audio and video by some simple Javascript commands does lead to privacy concerns. One has to hope that any permissions mechanisms Mozilla and others come up with will be able to successfully prevent any malicious use.

Online tracking firm Quantcast has agreed to pay $2.4 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it secretly used Adobe’s ubiquitous Flash plug-in to re-create tracking cookies after users deleted them, the company said Saturday.
More than $1 million of the settlement will go to fund privacy groups chosen by the plaintiffs, and 25% will go to the lawyers who filed the suit. It’s unlikely that any money will go to the class, since it essentially includes every internet user in the U.S.

Microsoft's creaking Internet Explorer 6 is more secure and popular than either Google's Chrome or Opera US banking giant Chase has determined.
Chase has said it will support later versions of Microsoft's browser, such as IE 8, that does offer greater protection. Also making the cut are Mozilla's Firefox 2.0 and higher and version 3.0 and higher of Apple's Safari on the Mac - but not the PC.

Google released an Internet Explorer plug-in designed to let Microsoft's browser use the features and performance of Google's own Chrome browser.

Sorry everyone but I am a web developer and it is my sincere wish that IE6 would just mysteriously disappear from computers around the world :)

Having to make a website compatible with FF and IE7 and IE8 is enough of a challenge most days. Add IE6 to the mix and it is enough to make you want to tear out your hair :)

Well the EU should do one.

Opera are only moaning because they don't make as much revenue as they did
when you had to buy a licence to run their browser.

M$ should just give you an option to install it if you wish to during installation.

European Union see M$ as a cash cow.

I find this very weird.

Using Opera I can't open the GAOTD home page, I get a WordPress Error. I did a nslookup on the http://www.giveawayoftheday.com and got an IP address which, when used in Opera, opens the GAOTD home page just fine.

I have no problems opening any other pages using Opera. In fact http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/cse-html-validator/#more-1646 opens the page fine, so it is not a DNS problem.

All the other browsers I have opens GAOTD home page. I have deleted all cookies on Opera and I am out of ideas. Can anybody guess what the problem could be?

For some reason, after 2 hours Opera decided to cooperate, so scratch this, problem is solved

I got this problem with IE. But when I tried with Opera, it worked.
