Hi,
it has been a while I used O&O and compared machine performance before and after, and cross-compared with diskkeeper on a same built rig.
(I had hardware twins in the machines I use(d) to test all sorts of things in.)
At the moment, in the rig I use now, I have an older version of diskkeeper, and I hardly notice it runs. (CPU is core two quad, it should run x64 but doesn't. Should run Vista or vista x64, but doesn't. ((It runs XP. This is because I had to quickly migrate from a workhorse that developed a leaking capacitor to a machine I had used for testing.)).
Anyway, it has the potential ten sata, and six pata.
Three RAID chips in there. It runs two arrays at all times. It often sees tray-mounted swap drives. There is at times over three tera in this rig, with swap-out backup drives resynching every so often. (detail: mirror 2*500 system, 4*500 striped-mirror data, swap-sata, and a pata connector oft times gets used for other data safeguard/backup tasks. burner is also sata.)
It is a lettersoup.

When defrag or indexing hits, it is audible.
All in all, the defrag tool used is often seen as a driver, and runs at system level.
It has been a long time I last heard of driver conflicts when defraggers are in use, but I know the problem existed.
Long time ago, Some Antivirus and FireWall tool had a problem with a defragger.
(See, they will nowadays also install a system level "driver").
When the defrag tool kicked in, there was a driver conflict.
I have not said which, because the problem was solved years ago, but the potential exists.

There is one more thing I should add (or two).
Do not shedule two different defrag tools. Don't let windows defrag undo what DK or O&O did, because when you do, the one running after a differently done job will run a long long time.

And two, a disk copy will result in an unfragmented copy.
A restore of a backup will also result in a unfragmented copy of backed up files.

edit>> Oh, I forgot. I prefer DK over O&O.
Their old suite was good, but the most recent suite I got to test in another rig offers some nice extras.
(I should tell you I had available not for resale (NFR) full suites of both brands in same time-frame. Currently DK's extras in the newest they offer me (are there any out there using all angles?) offers a few gems which are not(yet) in the O&O NFR I might also get hands on experience in. I was not, and am not comparing the latest of both.)

I bought my copy just a little over 1 month before the 2008 version came out and they refused to let update. I was so furious with DK. If they would have had any info on their website that a 2008 was coming out I would have waited.
I got them back though and anyone can do this and if you still have your receipt. Call or email DK technical support and tell them that your copy will not activate anymore. They will tell you to mail in a copy of your receipt. About a week later they will send you a link to a download of 2007 and for whatever version you bought. This link doesn't require an activation code when you install. It is a full version that will work on any computer. Now you can install it on multiple computers if want. Just don't go crazy and give the link or they will notice and fix it.

I was gonna ask you once, rabbit, if you ever used DK. I think it was when I asked you how many hard drives you had or something like that and you said you had like terabyte drive + a 750g or 500g+ some external's. I thought you could get really good use out of DK. Guess, I don't need to.
If people only knew what a difference it made, they wouldn't mind spending the money.

Hi Txnnok, glad you're a diskeeper fan as well. I to have overkill, lol.(I think it was worth it for the extra $40 that it cost over the pro edition). I would swear by it now; though I'm always open to suggestions/recommendations from others. I did try O&O's defrag program (the free one that was given away some time ago via these forums - v8 or 9 I think) and Jkdefrag and DKLite, but none compare to DK2007 in my opinion.

So long as it does the job it really doesn't matter; though with the added benefits that DK2007 and 2008 have, such as the automatic defrag, I-FAAST and Boot Time Defragging, for me it makes it worth spending some money rather than using one of the free programs.

Does it defrag on the go like Diskeeper? I'm all for checkingout new software and looks like a good one. Much better interface that Diskeeper 2007, like whiterabbit commented and for that price you can't go wrong.

If your going to pay full price for one,get Diskeeper like Rabbit said. Best move I ever made. I never have to hit defrag, although I do from time to time or run a boot time for the MFT. DK defrags in the background and doesn't drain system resources at all. I use pro premier. A little over kill, but worth it. The 2008 version out now is suppose to defrag the MFT without having to boot time defrag, thats pretty sweet.

If anyone is curious about what it all adds up to, I can tell you this. I have about 23 gigs left on this partition. Almost everyday, I will add programs, uninstall them, and do all sorts of stuff. I'll get it down to about 9 gigs and then I will do a clean up and leave. The next morning when I return I will have anywhere from 15 to 23 gigs again and no longer will be in the red.

Hi Shawndion,

The online store I buy from in the UK(exclusively) only has up to 1Tb internal drives yet, though I doubt I could afford the cost of such a large disc. I didn't actually realize that 2 Tetrabyte discs were available until you mentioned it, so checked the priced thought I'd rather buy another decent video card, lol; though the disc would be very tempting....knowing me I'd end up buying both, lol. I tend to use the online store because it’s got a good service, quick returns policy, one is of the cheapest in the UK plus its only 15 minutes away if I need to return an item even quicker than the usual way.

I would love to get an external sometime as the two I have are only 500Gb each, which isn’t enough when I use them for backing up and imaging etc. I’ve actually mislaid one in the house somewhere. When we went on vacation back in July, I hid all the peripheral stuff around the house just in case we were burgled and have not been able to find the darned thing since, lol.

I’ve tried the program you suggested just out of curiosity, and for free it is actually quite good as a package, though it doesn’t have some of the facilities that diskeeper has such as IFAAST and Boot time defrag, both of which have had a significant impact on my computers performance. Still as you say, we all have different computers and we all have our own preferences.

If your wife is leaching all the games, you will probably need those 2 terabytes, lol. I can’t begin to guess how many free games there are out there. I have over 200Gb of files just for one game (Battlefield 2) and about a quarter of that for games such as Unreal Tournament 2004 and again for other Battlefield games.

I agree Whiterabbit the do and forget approach is nice ... but JKDefrag has a screensaver mode that does just that... and I also use contig from Microsoft (Old program from sysinternals) does a great job.. I agree that the interface of JKDefrag is totally CRAP but hey it does the job and my 2 TB Western Digital hasn't blown up yet (Heck with all these GAOTD we need TB storage ;-) ) But hey no computer is built the same and what ever doesn't destroy it works for me Hense the Sandboxie approach I use all the time...

Shawn

P.S: Take care... and keep up the good work with those game site my wife is leaching all of them ;-P

I have tried version 11, it is a lot smoother, a lot faster in defrag and feels better than version 10.

I am a licencee of version 10.

Hi Shawndion,
Thanks for your suggestions. Diskeeper lite is just a basic defrag tool which windows has. JKDefrag is no different to the lite version of diskeeper apart from having an appallingly ugly interface; both are only as good as what you pay for them, ie nothing. Diskeeper 2007 allows me to set and forget, which is the way I like it. No more having to wait while the defrag tool has finished because my defragging is carried out in between all those idle moments that I'm using the computer. I used to have to leave the computer on over night and it still wouldn't have finished defragging some of the larger discs. I could take me over a week to get them all defragged each time I did it, which meant I did it less and less because it was such a bind. Now it's a breeze.

When I first started using Diskeeper early last year it only took a few days for my discs to be fully defragmented, which was brilliant considering I'd not had to do anything apart from install the program and click the auto button. With my largest drives measuring 750Gb (each of my computers has between 1Tb to 1.5Tb of space much of it full), so to use JKdefrag or diskeeper lite just isn't practical for me. Glad you're happy with it though - that's what really matters... :)

Regards

Stephen

1. If you want to buy this special offer which I highly recommend despite Lee’s reply, don’t click the link given as by accident the period at the end has been included so that you’ll see an error displayed. Instead, copy all of the link except the period and paste it into your browser address bar.

2. As far as I can see (there is no precise hint on O&O’s website nor in the e-mail I got) the deadline has to be corrected to 24:00 CEST (=22:00 UTC).

3. Lee, „the promise of being up to xy% faster and better“ – isn’t this the blurb they use to make for every new major release? Would YOU buy a new version if they’d tell you or if you would assume by yourself that it’s just 3% faster or better?
Secondly, if we look one year or so ahead and imagine the release day of v12: Would someone who now is gonny buy v11 THEN have „thrown money down the toilet“ as well? He could, after all, have saved his money by waiting for a better and faster release. It soon becomes evident that this point of view reaches an impasse since you would have to wait until the final version to be sure not to waste your money. And even then, it would still be better to wait for the price to fall. Wait ... wait ... wait. I do wonder how many software programs people would have on their pc and how many software companies could survive if everybody persued this kind of consumer tactics.

4. Let me tell you why I decided to grab the offer: A countrywide well-known pc magazine tested several months ago 6 defrag tools for both XP and Vista.
O&O 10 Pro, tested for Vista (which I don’t care for since I stick to XP), got in US school marks no more than a „C“ and was found to be too expensive! Its speed values were: A) 33h 15min for defragging a 4GB partition, B) 4.26 min for copying a large file onto a second HD, C) 57sec for copying smaller files onto a second HD, D) 1.22 min for copying a large file from a second HD onto the first one’s C drive, E) 1.05 min for copying smaller files from a second HD onto the first one’s C drive, F) 2.40 min boot time, G) 13sec for loading image files, H) 7.30min for video editing.
If I had Vista, based on the above test results I certainly would never buy O&O 10 Pro, not even for 10.- Euros.

But fortunately the XP results were diametrically different from the performance shown under Vista, at least when it came to speed: O&O 10 Pro, tested for XP, gained an overwhelming victory scoring a 1,39. Opposite to that, JK Defrag 3.16 got a 2,31 , Raxco PerfectDisk a 2,54 , Diskeeper 2008 Home got a 3,20 , Microsofts „onboard“ defrag got a 3,39 and finally MST Defrag Home 2.02 a 5,00.
Here are the speed values taken from O&O 10 Pro: A) 12h 38min for defragging a 4GB partition, B) 1.02 min for copying a large file onto a second HD, C) 1.05 min for copying smaller files onto a second HD, D) 1.12 min for copying a large file from a second HD onto the first one’s C drive, E) 1.11 min for copying smaller files from a second HD onto the first one’s C drive, F) 1.12 min boot time, G) 9sec for loading image files, H) 1.43min for video editing.

Well, Lee, for 10 Euros the chances for anyone on this planet called Earth to scratch up a XP defrag tool that comes remotely near to the quality of O&O 10 Pro, IMHO can be fixed with ... Zero.

My advice to everybody: Go and get it! There are 3 and a half hours left.

Just my 2 cents..

JkDefrag... all the way for me... Freeware application and fully customizable...

Heck and if you want something like Disk Keeper... search for dklite.exe on google. It's a Free version of Disk Keeper.. only thing it doesn't have is a task scheduler big deal considering we get tons of programs here on GAOTD that do just that...

Good point Lee, though for those who can't afford the cost of a full version of the latest one, this is probably a good deal. (Though it's a good bet they will be giving it away sometime in the next year as they seem to do with older software - especially if it's true that the latest version is so much better than the previous version)

regards

Stephen

p.s.

I'll stick with my Diskeeper 2007 program that's given me good service for over a year. It's kept my HDD's fully defragged virtually since the day I installed it. I'm not sure how O&O works, but with Diskeeper, it works in the background, but only when the computer is idle, so it doesn't impact upon any programs you may be running such as a high power game that requires all your processing power and memory.

Today, 10/12/08, is the LAST day of a 3-day promotion featuring the award-winning German defrag tool O&O Defrag 10 Professional.
You can get this brilliant software for just 10,00 EUR (=13,41 USD) which was worth 49,90 EUR when it was originally released in spring 2007. The deadline apparently is 24:00 CET (=23:00 UTC).

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This is an upgrade version, not a standalone! So you must have an older version installed.

I had downloaded v4 when it had become free (cf. http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/1725#post-10719) but there is no support anymore for that. The developer O&O themselves sent me today's offer by e-mail expressively stating my version (4) so that it MUST be possible to upgrade even from a very old and meanwhile obsolete version as mine.

BTW, I am in no way linked to the vendor resp. developer (these are different!).

Go to: https://shop.oo-software.com/36/uurl-g1xe5rfu5k. (Under "Sprache" change to "English")
