German Court Determines Unprotected Wireless Networks a Threat
Is your wireless network password protected? If you live in Germany and the answer is no, you could be facing a hefty fine.

According to a ZDnet blog, a recent ruling by Germany’s top criminal court determined those who leave a wireless network unprotected can be fined as much as 100 euros or roughly $127 dollars.

Hi
thank you for heads up.
I prefer to manually check MSE updates.
Never faced a BSOD.

@ copmom do you have other antivirus installed or other incompatible software?

How to manually update MSE

http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/ADL.aspx

Fix MSE Utility - Repair Microsoft Security Essential

However, just in case anytime, you find that you are facing any issues in running Microsoft Security Essentials due to any reasons, simply run this utility. This utility will restore all its registry values & service settings to known good defaults, without re-installing MSE. The utility may take only a moment to run, but rest assured, it does the job! It works on both 32bit and 64bit of Windows Operating Systems.

And.. I might add, they never sent out a 'fix' on that last Security Update KB971486 ..
because of that it still takes me 8 full minutes on start up to get past that BSOD (blue screen of death), before my start button, task bar, and icons show up! I've tried everything and a lot of things that Robert so kindly suggested, to no avail!

No, 10 day-old signatures are NOT up to date and do NOT offer adequate protection. Vergrößern Under certain circumstances, Microsoft's recently launched Security Essentials (MSE) security solution fails to download updates for several days

"Are the millions of people who have bought ringtones breaking the law if they forget to silence their phones in a restaurant?

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/10/judge-ringtones-arent-performances-so-no-royalties.ars

Joking aside (actually, that's less of a joke than you might think), the ringtone argument was made by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) earlier this year when it sued certain mobile carriers in the US in an attempt to force them to fork over royalties every time a customer's ringtone is played.
Even though the carriers were already paying for download rights to the songs, ASCAP argued that each ring was a
"performance" and therefore those download payments weren't enough.

For codecs, I do download a lot of video clips and sound clips I have in my favourites this site.

http://www.free-codecs.com/

My main codec installation is ACE Mega CodecS Pack 6.03 - Professional Edition

I user the hyper edition, I just uncheck real media codec and quicktime codec as they cause problems with my real player and quicktime player.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ACE_Mega_CoDecS_Pack.htm direct link.

I have yet to come across a video or music file that won't play.

Hi! Mmy first post here so apologise for errors!

Yes, VideoGet a good, useful download - I too experienced this problem, .AVI file type has audio no video when played with Windows MediaPlayer 10 (using Windows XP Pro SP2, Internet Explorer 6). I believe I got a meassage saying "error - no codec". File type .WMV on same download worked fine.

Read all the comments/reviews, checked Nuclear Coffee website for help, found nothing there. Thought about downloading DivX or VLC player etc as per comments. I decided to investigate with GSpot - it reported (video) Xvid ISO MPEG-4 CODEC was not installed.

So I went to xvid.org, found it (Xvid for Windows, Koepi's media ... 628KB) and installed it (somewhere it said follow the instructions, but I couldn't find any!). But, it still wouldn't play! Windows Media Player said something different now, like "Error downloading codec". I tried turning off my firewall, tried following WMP Web Help, took me to the same codec! Figured I just wasn't installing the codec right. I now have a program folder called "Xvid" with 14 entries, who knows what the actual codec is, or where it is! - I'm new at this!

Well, I sort of gave up, rebooted my computer, and did a scheduled "Windows Update". Just for the fun of it, I re-ran GSpot - now it says "Codec(s) are installed"! With my firewall still turned off, I opened up VideoGet, said a prayer and hit the "play arrow" in the right column on one of the .AVI files ... here we go! ... sorry - still get "Error downloading codec". Thought I may have had it!

While I appreciate this is not actually a VideoGet developer problem, I do think they would do themselves a lot of good putting instructions on their website on making this work. A lot of potential customers will use the default file type .AVI and be playing on Windows Media Player. It will lose a lot of sales, cause frustration and waste time all round of this isn;t sorted, in my opinion.

I won't give up trying, but most other people I think would. I hoped I had a process that worked and the developer could refine and publish. Sorry I'm not there yet! Any ideas? I think the clue might be that indeed, now GSpot at least says the "Codec(s) are installed", we're almost there!

Thanks, Steve

If you are using default settings, then I'm presuming you have set the output to ".avi" - Recently, large amounts of Windows users have discovered they haven't the codec required to run this format. Although downloadable, much easier workarounds exist.

I advise you put the "Output Format" to either WMV or MPEG (Format 1 and 2 - Try both.)

If this works, good, no more problems. If not, download this program. VLC Player - It plays 99% of Codecs, after installing. Open each attempted file, i.e. avi, wmv, mpeg2, mpeg1 (In that order.)

If your still having problems, please post again outlining the errors that occured.

Lots of programs out there to convert between video formats. The real trick to get converted video to play in a hardware player (the kind most people have and use next to their TV) is generating the .ifo and .bfo files and packaging everything into the appropriate AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS directories with the .vob files broken into appropriately sized chunks. Almost all of the so-called video converter and DVD creator just do the transcoding, and leave you with a video file you can only play on a PC. Clone DVD and most of the other DVD copy programs will take the original DVD and use the original .ifo and .bfo files when they reencode to a different size or play time, but trying to assemble a playable DVD of transcoded .avi or .mp4 videos downloaded off the net is an onerous task that usually takes a day or two with a high-end video authoring program....half an hour to set up the files and define the chapters for a menu, and another day or so to yet again re-encode the videos for that program's particular liking. I have used VSO ConvertX to DVD with some success on shorter projects, but it just takes forever to transcode, and doesn't seem to like to handle more then a half dozen or so video clips at a shot. NeroVideo does a great job of transcoding, but doesn't generate a playable DVD (although it's .mp4/h264/Nero proprietary .mp4 output looks great and is the fastest I've had the chance to use). I usually end up tying up my main machine for two or three days to run SonicFoundry/Sony's Vegas Video and DVD Architect with main concept's or CCE standard video codecs. How about a simple (drag n'drop, or a simple pick list of files), fast (under 6 hours, with a typical runtime of 2- 2 1/2 hours for a DVD5), easy to use (has preset optimized values for NTSC and PAL standard and HDTV screens, has advanced menu options for setup of temp, output folders, burn device, etc.)DVD creation program that really does what they all promise. Drag - Drop - Convert - Burn - Playable DVD ....all automagically done by the software ;) I shouldn't have to play recording engineer to get 20 minutes of Naruto to play on my TV when relaxing with friends.
