Mozilla man blasts Apple and Google for HTML5 abuse

'Only Microsoft gets web standards'

Blizzard is so peeved at Apple and Google that he even goes so far as to lavish praise on Microsoft for its belated embrace of open standards.

Blizzard is fuming over Apple's new "HTML Showcase" site. The site purports to demonstrate Apple's love for web standards, but in the end, it does much the opposite.

Apple pretends other browsers don't like HTML5 !!

as i predicated this would happen, i actually installed on a backup machine to see what the results would be.
i will give the "fool firefox" addon a try..

The "not compatible" is actually just a version number that the programmer states when he releases the plugin. Of course life being what it is and commitments springing up - sometimes when plugins need to be updated - there isn't any time free.

The testing tools I mentioned above basically tells firefox to ignore the maximum version number encoded in the plugin - so while it might say it will work with Firefox up to version 2.x - with the testing tools you can make it install and load in version 3.

Then you should go through and check that it works as you expect - It probably will - but some plugins might make the browser crash or freeze. (Hint - you remove these plugins)

If the plugin causes firefox to choke - then you have to wait for the new version.
If the plugin works ok and you are happy with it - you have something that you can use until the programmer gets around to updating it.

A few of my plug-ins were not compatible with FF3. FF3 does keep track of which ones these are and when a update comes along it will automatically find it and let you know about it.

Out of interest, sergio - which Add-ons were your incompatible favorites?

In some cases Nightly Tester Tools (NTT) can get around version limitations.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6543

Of course these are Testing tools and bypassing the compatibility checks may need some testing - but I found a few while FF was in beta - and the incompatible Add-ons worked just fine.

(Sometimes even slight issues are worth putting up with - when it means you can use your favorite Add-ons until a new one for version 3 is written)

Until the update I though the PC was acting up! Good of you to post this up Lee. I don't understand why you didn't link the official Mozilla site for dwnlds/updates though; although the current users do get notification to update if they have it turned on in the options.

I'm a big fan of Mozilla products, so for those new to them I've listed the official links below. Of course check out Lee's link above to MajorGeeks for more than Ff. They have a lot to offer there.

The official Mozilla links:

Mozilla Products = Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client. Once there click the "Learn more" link for each respective product page that includes a download link on it.

It's to fix images and some websites.

A recent update from Firefox,(v.2.0.0.10) seems to have screwed some sites because of a bug in the Javascript implementation.

The bug seems to have affected sites that use the Javascript method canvas.drawImage().

The method is popularly used to represent vector images into HTML using Javascript and hence the extent in which the bug affects websites could be pretty huge. But just to show the speed of bug fixing from the developers, a fixed build is already available at mozilla FTP. You can download the newer build which has the fix from:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2007-11-27-15-mozilla1.8/ (Windows) and

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2007-11-27-14-mozilla1.8/ (Linux)

Firefox seems to auto-update these days and asks the user to restart firefox for installing the update. Hence, I'm expecting quite a few number of users who have got the bug in firefox. Google Maps is one website that seemed to use the method as well, but I guess they have found a nice workaround the bug.

The bug can be reproduced by going to the site: http://www.foxsaver.com/public/published.

According to the Mozilla website:

"What's New in Firefox 2.0.0.11

Release Date:

Thanks Lee,
They (Mozilla) always make their updates quietly available on the server a day or two before officially announcing them. Perhaps hoping for a last minute feedback in case some bugs managed to escape the beta and RC testers.

Been waiting for this one,
Cheers.

Today is a new release of Thunderbird emailing solution from the mozilla project team.

Thunderbird delivers. Enjoy safe, fast, and easy email, with intelligent spam filters, quick message search, and customizable views. Brought to you by Mozilla, Thunderbird makes email better.

With extensions you can download mail from servers that give you free email but want you to pay to access you emails via other desktop applications.

Thunderbird home page (N:B it still displays version 1.5) http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/

New improved version can be downloaded via this link: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/2.0.0.0/win32/en-US/Thunderbird%20Setup%202.0.0.0.exe

Note that if you rely on AOL/Netscape mail, then don't install this new version as there are no extensions ready for AOL/Netscape mail.

I love firefox. I've got some great customizations on it that make my web experience great every time! As for Thunderbird, or other email clients - I prefer webmail. Too many chances for viruses and malware to infect your computer when you download and open emails, or even just delete them before opening. With webmail, everything stays on the server. And IF your computer needs to be reformatted, everything is still right on the server next time you log in.

I couldn't function without tabbed browsing. I first found tabbed browsing about 10 years ago with http://www.netcaptor.com and I still use it on my laptop because the keyboard navigation is second nature to me now.

I have a multi-threaded brain that tends to just dive off on tangents (or is it that I'm easily distracted) - so multiple tabs allows me to easily branch off in 10 new directions and backtrack easily, when I remember what it was I was originally....

... what was I saying?

No Avant? I loved Mozilla but it became a hog. Oh so happy when the team released Firefox as a light alternative. Haven't used Seamonkey,..I've read too many negative comments on it. No need for it here, anyhooo.

I tried an early version of Thunderbird and had problems with it hanging and crashing, so I put that on the back-burner for a while. A friend installed it at Christmastime, it crashed and she lost her address book and saved mail. Now she does backups, haahaa!
Ahh computer nerds,..will they ever learn? I'm happy knowing south of nothing.

Tabbed browsing is horses-for-courses. I didn't like it at first - Can't live without it now.

Mozilla Mutt here! Devout fan since its inception. I have to say that Firefox is the best thing since sliced milk (ahh come on, don't tell me you missed it!). Better than Opera, and leaves IE dead in the water.

Feature packed tabbed browser, security enhanced as mentioned in above posts (Switch Proxy & Tor plug-ins also available), with an abundance of themes and more plug-ins than you can shake a sheik at.

Run your media player directly from the browser with Foxy Tunes - Pluck web video from YouTube, Meta Cafe, etc with Video Downloader or alternatives - Forecost Fox for local weather-casts - Use Fox Lingo to translate foreign websites - Footie Fox for live European and English football scores (just for Lee) - Fox Clocks for a 'mouse-over' of world times - Flash Got Downloader.....And that would not fill one page of what must be 100 or more pages of plug-ins (but who's counting).

Tab Mix Plus, All-In-One Sidebar, Add Bookmarks Here, Update Notifier and Quick Restart give your browser added functionality and ease of use.

Check it out...
Firefox Central http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/central.html
A universe of Add-Ons https://addons.mozilla.org/?application=firefox

Be a part of the team.
Mozilla Developer Center http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Main_Page
Mozilla Zine http://www.mozillazine.org/

A great backup and restore utility for Mozilla. http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

It's more than a browser,...it's a community.

Foxy surfing!
