http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-puts-windows-8-users-at-risk-with-missing-flash-update-7000003834/

Microsoft puts Windows 8 users at risk with missing Flash update

Summary: Last month, Adobe released a batch of critical security updates for Flash Player. Those updates are available for every modern browser except one. Microsoft has yet to release the update for IE 10 in Windows 8, and may not do so until next month.
If you use Internet Explorer 10 with Windows 8 today, you are exposing yourself to potentially serious security risks.

On August 21, 2012, Adobe released a batch of security updates for its Flash Player. According to the security bulletin, “These updates address vulnerabilities that could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.”

For Windows, Adobe classifies these updates as Priority 1, its highest rating:

If you use Windows 7 (or earlier) with any modern browser and you’ve enabled automatic updates, you already have the latest Flash security fixes. Ditto if you use a Mac.

But if you’re using Internet Explorer 10 on any version of Windows 8, including the RTM bits available via MSDN or TechNet and the enterprise preview, you are at risk. You cannot manually update the version of Flash baked into IE 10. Only Microsoft can do that.

Hi ZF,

Thanks for your help. I tried something today and it worked!!! I started the game as usual and I couldn't see the bottom of the game screen... so I thought... what about starting a new character?? So I did, and it worked. Now I see the entire game screen. Full screen, Window... it's all good now!

Out of curiosity, I quit my 2nd character and 'resumed' the 1st one I created. Ha, same messed up screen. So obviously something is not working right with my 1st character game settings.

Oh well, it just means I have to go through everything again to get to the same point where I ended up, but at least I can keep playing the game. :)

Thanks for your suggestion about QRes. I downloaded it and will keep it.

Carmen

I looked at the game's configuration files for my version of the game (MPC) and saw there was no option to manually set the screen resolution, which I was hoping you could do. It seems only to toggle between window or full screen and the resolution I noted in the log files was 1360x768, which might explain the bad fit on your 1280x1024 screen. I can't explain why one version worked better than the other except to guess that the version you got from the dev might have been a newer bug fixed version with better screen res detection. As for the the game knowing your settings, that would be due to the games settings folder created in your user directory (I can't tell you where that is, I'm on different pc now).

For what it's worth, I use a classic freeware utility to automatically change the screen resolution when necessary, usually for old windowed games that appear too tiny on a modern screen (a 640x480 window isn't large enough to use on a 1920x1080 screen).

QRES, available here: http://www.home.no/aksoftware

I drop the qres.exe in the windows folder so it can be accessed from anywhere then I use a batch file to launch the game, placing the batch file in the game folder and then creating a shortcut to it.

A batch file is a plain text file with a .bat extension, with each line being a separate "command line", to create one you can use most any text editor and save the file as *.bat instead of *.txt.

An example I'd use would look like the following, where the screen resolution is changed to whatever is desired in the first line, then the game is run, and when the game exits the original screen resolution is restored.

qres.exe /x:1024 /y:768
"C:\games\jongg\oldbutgood\game.exe"
qres.exe /x:1920 /y:1080

I'm not saying the qres solution is for you, but if you chose to use it you would probably want to set your resolution higher than your default resolution in the first line, if possible, using a size and screen ratio appropriate for your monitor.

I played todays game free for 1 hour from the developers site. (in Full screen mode on XP). I ended up liking it and downloaded the game from the GOTD site.

It downloaded ok. It unzipped ok. It installed ok. Opened ok but with one exception... the game screen is missing a part of the game that I know should be there. At the bottom it should have the Help, an Amulet (or something like that), and a small section where I keep pieces that I found, ie: key, bowl, book pages, etc.(to help me further in the game.)

I tried changing from Full screen to Window but it didn't help. I changed it back and forth a couple of times to make sure!

Not sure what to do to fix the problem... so I uninstalled the game. Deleted the contents of the folder except the MysteryofMortlakeMansion.zip file. Had Glary Utilities check for registry problems, broken links. Unzipped it again, Installed it again.

Strange how the game knew my name and the option to Resume was available. hmmmm. But anyways... The problem still exists!! I still cannot see the bottom inch +- of the game screen.

I would rather not mess around with the everyday resultion of my monitor which is always set at 1280 x 1024 by changing it to play this game. but I have never had this problem with any games before. Usually the resolution changes automatically and back again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I did directly e-mail the company's tech support address with my originally-posted info, and got this polite reply:

"First of all, thank you very much for your interest in Almeza MultiSet!

My name is Alex Abramovsky. I am a project manager in Almeza Company.

OK. We will fix this problem..."

However, I don't know if that means I or anybody else will then receive the "fix" for our installations that are subject to the "no updates, no new versions" rules. I hope we do.

If he directly sends me some kind of general procedure to follow that should work for everybody, I'll post it here.

Maybe they'll do like some previous companies and repeat their GAOTD offer with an improved version (although I don't want to wait 6 months for that).

Agreed about Windows 98/ME; but yes, I also have Windows XP systems for all "new stuff".

However, would you believe that some businesses (like one where I recently was working) are not permitted to change ANYTHING about their government-regulated FAA-certified manufacturing/test setup, including some designs that date to the 1950's? Among them they have several "legacy" Windows systems they are not allowed to update. No Windows XP/Vista for them.

So I thought I'd evaluate this software myself, then recommend it to them if it (eventually) works OK.

You Windows Millennium users have got to get away from WinME.

Get to XP at least, or invest in a new system with at least 2gb r.a.m. when Vista SP1 arrives. You will have Vista pre-installed.

You are leaving yourself open to a lot of problems and security issues from the net using WinME.

I too got the same error on Win ME when installing MultiSet, re:NETAPI32.DLL:NetWkstaGetInfo. I downloaded the netapi32.dll, thinking mine was corrupt or missing, however I have one installed and is the same version as the one I downloaded. Then I looked up NETAPI32.DLL:NetWkstaGetInfo on Google, and apparently you can get this on a Java update to version 6, however, this update is for XP, and not available to Win ME users. Also Sun Java is not supporting Win ME and under anymore. The Almeza website and program maker obviously did not actually try their program out on Win ME/98/98SE, and should not have said it would work on all Os's.
Irresponsible advertising!

Yes, I suspect they probably have abandon support for Windows 9x/ME-based systems (as have so many others).

However, I did send a message with the same info directly to the address listed on their technical help page. Hopefully I'll actually get a reply (although it will likely confirm that MultiSet should NOT work for 98/ME anymore).

Maybe there's a fix that won't require an attempted GAOTD-activated re-installation which will be expired by then...

And yes, copying often happens (both ways); Sometimes some companies even try to get away with branding and selling GPL software without also giving the source nor proper credit. Tsk.

problem is that the non complex games usaully are freeware. I'm sure that you can find a freeware that is simlar to the one you have to pay (who knows, maybe the paid one copied from the free one)

I'm not complaining, might be just me, but the games aren't as good as the software ...

Get a grip. You obviously prefer much more in-depth and complex games; That's fine. Ignore the games, move along. But some people like the smaller games, especially when all they want to do is take a short break. (I'll also note that none of the games you mentioned are puzzle games ;>)

Most of the applications are targeted to a limited audience. Even screensavers have a broader interest.

Mistake number one: You can't please everyone. I know you're not talking about making everyone happy, but the variety is a good thing. There's a LARGE amount of software offered here that is completely useless to me (the password keepers, for example - I just write them down on paper - my home isn't that insecure!) that others were just slobbering over. Yet you don't see me complain, and that's because I know I'll have my turn. If you really think you're going to get software you like even more than once per week, you've gotten greedy and there's no question about it.

the problem is that most "good" games are the ones that are already "successful", such as halo, war craft, need for speed,...ect
you have to buy them because they (EA, micro, bizzard) don't need anymore people to "test"
softwares are the other hand, I never heard of direct access, conpect draw, sticky password, wirekeys, aimdersoft......
those are good softwares worth buying, but I never heard of them.
correct me if I'm wrong, but the point (at least what it is suppose to do) is to let companies be known to customers

Some compaines are not "as good" such as double games, but once in a while I'm am pleased with the software provided (the only "good" games I liked were, ball 7, battlesnake, hacker evolution, and magic tea)

anyways, for people who keep complaining....GET A LIFE!
if you like a software, BUY IT
they don't work for free!
if you keep buy it, look for freewares, almost every game/program has a simlar freeware

There was a time when there wasn't a game offered with the regular software offered every day or even just the weekends. So I can't say I miss it all that much. The game section is nice... but I always looked at it like it was a "plus" to the regular site anyway.

GOTD won't always have what I'm interested in for games or for regular software. But occasionally both sections do have something I'm very interested in. How can you moan about not getting a game when they're piling up on your computer for testing anyway? O.o "Testing" implies you aren't even playing them. Just a freebie pack rat? eh.. nm.. idc.

Personally I like the bigger downloads for the games. They're usually a bit better than the "cube" clones. But there are those that like the cube games too. 100% of the ppl will never be happy 100% of the time.

I agree with BOTH of you. Most of the applications are targeted to a limited audience. Even screensavers have a broader interest. I already have plenty of games (and screensavers) to choose from. I don't "need" anymore games. I've stopped recommending GOTD; because, some friends & others I've told about it lately complain to me that there's no games or anything else that interests them. I am starting to agree with them...
The few times there have been anything I might want, I've had to wade thru obvious frauds wasting space & time posting their "spam". People have complained and offered solutions too long. I miss some of the "regulars" comments. This forum has less pollution and more familar names I can trust.
(Thanks for letting me "vent" ) 8])
