From time to time I've seen posts about folks getting Windows' BSOD [Blue Screen crashes], but -- & I really hope this doesn't sound arrogant -- it's been so long since we've had any here that we'd forgotten what a PITA those can be. In case it helps then, maybe just as a reminder?...

Nirsoft.net has a small app, BlueScreenView, that reads the dump files Windows creates, giving you a human-readable view of what might have happened. Going to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced you can reach a dialog where you control Windows startup behavior, & can set Windows to Not automatically re-start when it crashes, so you can actually read what happened on the Blue Screen rather than sometimes just seeing a brief flash of blue. Either way Google, a LOT -- I mean don't just read the first page of hits, but maybe 3 or 4 or more, as from my recent experience anyway it took that much to get a sort of consensus of what had happened... it was very far from cut & dry. Also use your head -- while none of the errors were identical, in this case they all had to do with paging errors, i.e. writing between memory & hard drive, which meant checking the memory & hard drive were great places to start.

In this case what happened is 1 of the RAM sticks failed, [almost?] completely. On the way to diagnosing that came across 2 problems that I wanted to pass along... The 1st is that [I think} because of the severity of the failure, win7's built-in memory checker utility crashed both times I ran it. That's not a huge deal except finding out it had crashed was a slight hassle -- had to go through the error logs, Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer. That memory checker *Should* re-start the system, run just after boot, then show you a pop-up with the results as soon as you log into win7, but it apparently doesn't show that pop-up fairly often, so again you have to go through the logs. In this case I had to go through the logs once to find there weren't any results, then again to find out the app crashed.

The 2nd problem *Hopefully* won't occur for anyone, but it took quite a few Google pages to find it so here it is in case. As far as memory checking apps goes, Memtest86 is Very popular, but in my case running the bootable CD I kept getting interrupt errors -- it can be caused by problems reading the media, & using the version of the app that installs to a USB stick worked fine. BTW, running memtest86 it tests the RAM sticks one by one, & watching the memory range you can tell which stick is bad, e.g. in this case the 3rd 2 GBs of RAM -- I was able to pop all the sticks out, put just that stick in the 1st slot, boot to memtest86 & confirm. Also BTW, while bios with hot key boot menus are popular [e.g. hit Escape during boot], not all of them will list USB sticks, & in those cases you'll have to dig into the bios settings [usually Del during boot]... on that particular board the USB stick was listed in the hard drive boot order.

ANd now that I've got that posted, I Really, Truly, Hope no one ever has cause to find it useful. :-)

yes, absolutely it is worth it. My subscription ran out about two months ago. Ive been using the trials, first pro and now the regular system mechanic, but here in a few days

I'll be getting system mechanic, not pro. pro is useless on 64bit anyway, the firewall and antivirus doesnt work with it.
----------------------------------------
I read hotdoge3 article and looked up some myself. My explanation is oversimplified, but running the ram defrag is nice feature to have. If you have enough ram and you do, you wont notice issues that much. Like hanging programs that you close and stuff like that.

But lets say you have 2 gigs or 1 and are running it after using a couple of programs. You can free up a half gig of ram.
I didn't read that, that comes from experience from when I used to a low powered computer. My computer would lag from running a few programs and I would run the ram defrag and it was like new again.
But running it is just temporary till you run more programs and fill the ram back up.
-----------------------------------------
Anyway, there are few programs that I strongly about and this is one of them. This Iolo's flag ship so to speak and other programs have tried to beat them, but they cant.
And all their features are safe, including their registry tools. It is safe to set it to autopilot.

I'm pretty sure hotdoge feels the similar too.

Thank you all I just don't want to destroy my ram and since I didn't know what it does I thought I'd ask. I thought of getting something for the hard drive. I don't like the defrag in system mechanic. Maybe I will eventually. I got system mechanic last month and I got another year for $14.95 or something like that I used a coupon. So it doesn't expire till Oct.3, 2011.

I doubt it will ever be on giveawayoftheday. Who hasn't heard of it? It is really worth the money especially if you have more than one computer. You can use it on three computers. We have it on two. It's good on both of them till Oct. 3, 2011.

I run it with the auto pilot on, with exception of defragging my hard drive and my registry.

I have diskeeper for my hard drive and I will do my registry manually. I hate registry screen popping up to defrag when I in the middle of install or something.

That ram defrag, that just helps clear out your ram of left over crap that shouldnt be there. It's cool, but it really doesnt do much.

Does anyone have System Mechanic 9? I was wondering if it was good to put your the program on auto pilot? I was also wondering about the defrag ram tool in it. Is it good to do that on it's own?

I have 4 gigs of ram. I noticed in system mechanic if there is anything below 50% it says I should defrag ram? Is that good to do or no? Thank you

Is there a diagnostic program that will check memory, especially RAM so I can see if I have a bad card or if one card or portion of my memory is weak and beginning to fail. I know that there is a diagnostic that IT Pros use to inspect memory cards but is there a software that will give this info without having to go to the "Geek Squad and pay to have this checked?.....If not can one of you enlightened folks design one ....could be a real money maker for someone with the abilities to make this.

When I first start the game, I see a series of screens.
1. Small screen stating "Press Del to enter setup". If I press Delete I see another small menu flash briefly then "ERROR! Memory access violation" and it shuts down.
2. If I ignore #1 it disappears and another showing "Converting Textures" loads for about 40 seconds.
3. Then I see a box with "Auto Configuration" before the game screen comes up.

The program gave me the same "ERROR! Memory access violation" message when I moved my mouse and shut it down multiple times as I looked through the menu and explored the CONTROLS and HELP sections. I decided to just try PLAY, and it shut down again repeatedly after each game without option to play again or continue. I uninstalled and reinstalled but it acted the same way. I tried the F5-8 DEBUG KEYS in the help menu but got no additional screen to follow instructions.

I don't know enough about what makes things tick but I looked this up:

Acer Incorporated CPU
AMD Sempron Processor 3200+
1.00 GHz, 1.43 GB of RAM
OS Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2
I use Mozilla Firefox.

It has been interesting to explore software that doesn't work for me and try to convey the problem to you. There is a desire to give as much feedback as I can, but I don't have the technical vocabulary perhaps. I hope this has been helpful.

~~~Since I spent a lot of time re-starting this game(20-25 times)to give it a chance, I include the rest of my review for those interested~~
These graphics aren't sophisticated, but once you adjust the perspective with the camera controls (follow HELP then RULES from the main menu) you can predict where the food falls without much difficulty. Your task then is to catch vegetables and meat for a specific "recipe" shown on the screen while avoiding the candy, soap, bugs and(OMG)prescription drugs which can fall into your soup. There are 2 sudden death poisoned mushrooms and a grenade. Some items have look-alikes (eggs vs. soap) to keep you on your toes. The concept of the game is amusing and I chuckled out loud at the visual the first time I lost.
I have a few suggestions for the developers:
1. Grenades come far too quickly early in the first game. Let the player get used to deciding which items are still needed for their soup before they are faced with a screen full of sudden death items, caterpillars, chocolate bars and eyeballs.
2. A pause after each life lost would also be nice, letting the player check their progress and see which vegetables are still needed for their soup.
3. Each time a new game started, I had to adjust the camera angle. Could that be saved until the player changes? The program saves my name(sound, video etc.) from game to game so I believe saving other settings is possible.
I couldn't play more than one game at a time without a restart. That said, I had to uninstall due to technical difficulties which I'll take to forums.
Awwww gee I wish I could get this to work on my computer.
