Hello Michigan J. Frog and welcome to the forums! Yes, it is true that Mac software is rarely given away. Like you said there are more Windows users than Mac users. This means there is overall a much wider selection of software out there for Windows machines as opposed to Macs. The key to the GOTD program is they work together with companies in order to give away free software and also advertise that software in the process. Since there are less software out there for Macs it is really hard to find a company willing to give away their software for free. You may have noticed that sometimes there are weekends with no game giveaway. This is because that is another market which is hard to find companies willing to give away their games for free. So this is my reasoning on why Mac software is rarely given away here...it's just hard to find. But if you wish to contact the GOTD team directly you can do so by filling out the form on this page:
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/about/contact/

I hope you enjoy these forums and have a great day.

I know that GOTD does not give away much software for Macs, and I know that they recently mentioned something about this in their blog, but I don't know how much this has been discussed because this is my first visit to their forums.

Well, not to just b*tch and wine about there not being much software given away for Macs, I thought that a simple alternative to their giveaways might work (I do not know how they make their giveaway deals with the companies they work with, so pardon me if this wouldn't necessarily work).

GOTD gives software away every day, and they also give games away on the weekends. Though there are more Windows users than Macs, I believe that they might be able to also giveaway Mac software (does not have to be Mac specific, but that's up to them) on the weekends.

Feel free to the idea down, but as I do not know how GOTD makes their deals and I am not familiar with their whole process (the regular 7 days, weekends, etc.), an explanation as to why would be appreciated for my future knowledge.

Thanks WR - for a card game.
I was hoping so much that you would have found a game I don't have already - but no :( It's not easy for me to find new solitaire card or mahjongg games, especially for free.
This game is really good looking, but it's stuttering on my system. Here is the Solitaire 3D Official Home Page. You can read what you'll get for $9.95 in the full version - a good collection. For PC & Mac.

The following game is actually a demo of a much larger game that includes over 70 card games. This demo however does offer four full games for you to play, so I thought it was worth including in the free games project. They games that you get are not limited, so effectively you have four free card games. I realize that there are loads of freeware card games, but the presentation of this particular set is immaculate and very pleasing to the eye.

3D Solitaire: (11.74Mb)

Free Solitaire 3D includes four solitaire games; Beleaguered Castle, Gaps or a.k.a. Montana, Pyramid, and Twenty. The game features a lot of customization options and the decks in the game can be printed out by the player.

In a word, "wow." I'm not a regular solitaire player but if I had to choose what solitaire game I'd have in my PC, it would be this one.

Granted the game choices are limited and do not include the more popular solitaire games, still the level of detail this game has in terms of cards and table as it's rendered in 3D is pretty amazing. The game offers four solitaire games, namely; Beleaguered Castle, Gaps, also called Montana, Pyramid, and Twenty. For those unfamiliar with these games, there is no need to fret. Being new to these games myself, I found the game's tutorial and the rules it provided to be helpful and easy to understand.

The sound aspect is typical of card games, some sounds of shuffling, cards being flipped, and other usual fare in these games. What really drew me in was the game's graphics. The cards look gorgeous and the table or play area really gave out the card table vibe. Behind the scenes, I discovered that there was a whole bunch of options available for setting up your card game. You can choose the art in front of the cards (the faces) or the art at the back of the card. You can choose what kind of playing table your cards are played on, the lighting's brightness, the placement of the light, and whole lot more. There's even an option setting that sets how neat the cards are placed on the table; from aligned straight, to the somewhat less linear human, to the downright sloppy card distribution. It was fun to fool around with this setting, as it was refreshing to see a card game that did not line up the cards no human could ever do in real life.

Hello Mac OS X users, welcome to the world of daily malware signature updates.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/new-apple-antivirus-signatures-bypassed-within-hours-by-malware-authors-update/3396?tag=nl.e539

On a test system using Safari with default settings, it behaved exactly as before, beginning the installation process with no password required.
As PC virus experts know, this cat-and-mouse game can go on indefinitely. Your move, Apple.
I’ve also captured a video that shows the File Quarantine feature successfully blocking an attempt to automatically install the Mac Guard malware. See below.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/apples-malware-challenge-usability-as-its-security-world-changes/49378?tag=nl.e539

Apple's malware challenge: Usability as its security world changes (YouTube You may like)
Apple customers for years have taken the view—inspired by the company’s commercials—that its software is safer. If you have a Mac there’s no need for anti-virus software. You’re secure.
Ed Bott nailed the importance of these malware attacks against Apple when he said:
Apple appears to be treating this outbreak as if it were a single incident that won’t be repeated. They seriously underestimate the bad guys, who are not idiots.
If Apple plans to play Whack-a-Mole with these guys, they’re in for months of misery. Just ask any Windows security expert

Apple’s iOS 4 hardware encryption has been cracked Russian company ElcomSoft is claiming to have cracked the 256-bit hardware encryption Apple uses to protect the data on iOS 4 devices, and is offering software that allows anyone to do it.
ElcomSoft is well-known as a corporate security and IT audit company, working with law enforcement agencies, the military, and intelligence agencies to recover data and perform forensics on devices. Its latest work has managed to open up the data stored on any device running iOS 4 by circumventing the hardware encryption chip Apple uses.

new twist in the Apple-Adobe squabble. Apple says that it's still cheerfully supporting Flash, and that downloading it from Adobe is the best way to get the safest, most current version.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/21/apple_threatens_to_kill_java_on_the_mac/
Jobs also banned Java apps from the upcoming Mac App Store. "Apps that use deprecated or optionally installed technologies (e.g., Java, Rosetta) will be rejected," the store's developer guidelines say.
So, in one day, Apple deprecated Java and announced that applications using deprecated technologies such as Java won't be allowed in its official Mac Apps Store.
Java suddenly disappeared from all desktops, relatively few people would actually notice.
OpenOffice requires Java for "full functionality," but it will run without it.
The worst you can say is that Jobs may murder an untold number of business desktop apps that require Java.
Apple never promised the world to do no evil, but ... Oh well. It's clearly no angel."

Alternatives to AllMyNotes I use (or have used) are:

Keynote (both the original from Marek Jedlinski (AKA Tranglos) and the NF (for New Features) taken up by Daniel Pradov after Tranglos declared a "hobby programmer bankruptcy, a writer's block, an intellectual meltdown to incapacity".

Original (Still available but quite old): http://www.tranglos.com/free/keynote.html

Daniel Pradov's version: http://code.google.com/p/keynote-nf/

Evernote (both the new (limited when free) 3 version and the older version 2).

I'm fortunate to have kept a copy of version 2 from my old computer as this is the one I use (and like) the most for its capacity for text, graphics and HTML (Web page) abilities.

The two programs Ashraf has mentionned are flawed (for my use at least), Cintanotes is too simple and only text oriented and FruitfulTime Notekeeper is an end-of-line product (no longer maintained) which I have tested and found so intrusive (it would insist on loading at Windows startup with no way of telling it not to) and was so awkward to use that I just gave up on it.

so say Google is collecting MAC addresses to expand its Geo Location API service. This provides punters with limited triangulated location awareness for anyone without a GPS. The problem is that Google "did not think it was necessary" to tell the DPA in Germany that it is doing this. Doh.
Apparently Microsoft, SkyHook and Teleatlas are also collecting the same photos and WiFi network information.

Yes Windows 7 64 bit is very hard to hack so say Mic$ Hear is a update,

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1598505/pwn2own-winner-hacks

Pwn2Own winner hacks all

THE WINNER of the Pwn2Own 2010 contest hacked everything in his path to claim £6,700 in prize money yesterday.
Miller eventually claimed the prize by breaking Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 on a MacBook, its Safari browser, Microsoft's PowerPoint, OpenOffice.org and a selection of Adobe's notoriously unsecure apps. Only Google's Chrome is left standing.

The Vole also got to watch Internet Explorer 8 bite the dust on a Windows 7 laptop thanks to the efforts of another hacker.

That's very interesting indeed,
apart of IE 8 vulnerabilities, I thought a 64 bit Windows O.S was the most difficult to be hacked.

Thank you

The IE exploit is the most interesting because it bypasses both DEP (Data Execution Prevention) and ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization), albeit in a very cumbersome way, The researcher, Peter Vreugdenhil, explains exactly what he did in a paper on his web site.

Pwn2Own rules require the exploit code to read a particular file on the system in order to register that the exploit has run.

http://threatpost.com/en_us/blogs/hacker-exploits-ie8-windows-7-win-pwn2own-032410

Shorten URL: http://threatpost.com/en_us/OOz.

Hacker exploits IE8 on Windows 7 to Win Pwn2Own

hacking into a fully patched 64-bit Windows 7 machine using a pair of Internet Explorer vulnerabilities.
Vreugdenhil, an independent researcher who specializes in finding and exploiting client-side vulnerabilities, used several tricks to bypass ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) and DEP (Data Execution Prevention), two significant security protections built into the Windows platform.

Look at this Tutorial
The drawback: the developer has added ads.
Yes, our programs are really 100% free now. After years fighting hackers we finally give up.
