Australian police issue stark warning over Apple Maps peril

Apple's mapping service has been an unmitigated disaster for the company, damaging its usually unimpeachable brand and causing several executives to fall on their swords due to its poor reception.

However, until now no-one's life has been at risk from the service but that small crumb of comfort has gone after Australian police issued a warning urging people not to use the service because it was leading them into life-threatening situations.

It's been revealed that several people attempting to find the town of Mildura (population 30,000) in the outback were sent 70km in the wrong direction, deep into territory with no access to running water and slowly frying in roasting temperatures.

The above picture shows Apple placing the town at the red dot, when it is in fact on the purple dot.

"Local police have been called to assist distressed motorists who have become stranded within the Murray-Sunset National Park after following directions on their Apple iPhone," the Mildura Police warned.

"Tests on the mapping system by police confirm the mapping systems lists Mildura in the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park, approximately 70km away from the actual location of Mildura."

The police also highlighted the state of peril many of the drivers are in due to this poor mapping advice.

"Police are extremely concerned as there is no water supply within the Park and temperatures can reach as high as 46 degrees, making this a potentially life threatening issue."

The police said they had contacted Apple to try and rectify the situation and urged people to use other forms of mapping than Apple's own service.

Perhaps a good old-fashioned paper map would be a sensible addition before setting off - better to be safe than sorry after all.

I remember that last time this game was offered, users had to use a download manager to get it to finish downloading. I even had to use one, and I have a 12Mb/s broadband connection. I didn't care for the game (genre), so I have no interest in it this time around.

So, try using a download manager/accelerator. It might help. ;)

P.S. - I also remember that last time this game was offered, they had it available for 2 days. Maybe they should've done that again this time too.

there was a error first time i tried to download it, but it seems to work fine now, have you tried the link that say "alternate download mirror" yet. I haven't tried it cause the regular link is working for me but, you might want to give that a try.

Yes thats a good suggestion. If somebody would make a torrent out of the download. That would be nice. But to make a torrent out of it you need to have the game. Wich i don´t have

I think some alternate download options like smaller download sets should be offered. If possible please also give out the games through torrents.

I have the same problem. When i try to download it starts the download with 10-20kb/s. After 10-30 min it stops with 3-20mb downloaded. I have tryed to download this like 5 times so about 2 hours of waste.

I am having this error repeatedly. The download of the installer stops after 19-25 mbs (hardly 4-5%). And it is so slow a download that for those two unsuccessful tries, I have wasted a lot of time.

Please help... I am really looking forward to the game.

Yes I have tjchan! Although I don't believe the 2Wire HomePortal 1000HG will get anymore updates. Btw, I get the HomePNA working again for now. All I did was to put it in another USB port. I have 4 USB 1.1 and 4 USB 2.0 ports on that computer. The HomePDA 2.0 works on either. Although it only runs at 12mbps (1.1 speed) anyway.

I do have many other computers on the network and none of them have any problems and are solid as a rock! Except these two of course. Both are HP Athlon 1.2GHZ ('02 era) which I believe HP used spare parts to make them (each one is a bit different and I have seen 4 of them) and sold them off to TigerDirect as refurbished. They work fine for the most part, but they are also very quirky on the other hand.

Have you tried checking for a firmware update for the DSL router?

Well some hardware is flaky. I have 2 computers here that one quit working from DSL/router. I swapped cards and drives from another one and that one quit working well. Swapped everything back and now both don't work well. Wiped the hard drive clean and they still don't work well on DSL/router. They both work well from dialup though. I got one to work with a USB HomePNA connection (never tried it on the other one). But later that quit too. I don't use them for anything but as a backup system anyway. Just a thought.

This sounds like a local networking issue (unless you are using broadband) that is in the range of fiber? Most internet connections like my DSL go up from 1.5Mbps - 6Mbps.

Are you using a wireless connection?

It did it again last night. This time I noticed that my router speed dropped to 1 Mbps. If I go to another website the speed jumps back up to 55 Mbps. Any thoughts?

Nope nothing else blocking it, I checked all that, just seemed to be locked up for whatever reason.

If the activate box stays there (from my experience), it means that it tried to make an outbound call to the internet and it was just waiting - in my case, ZoneAlarm popped up and I just did nothing (I neither allowed or denied it access). In that case it just stood there.

Try checking your internet connection settings / firewall.

When hitting the setup icon it goes to the activating box and just sat there. Did not install software or anything tried 3 times and each time had to use task manager to end the program. I could not close it any other way. The last time I let the activate box runall night and still nothing.
