Of course they're not going to sell the photos - they don't own them. What they are going to sell is access to the photos via their self-granted perpetual license.

But I don't understand the outrage... what did people think was going to happen? You store your photos, and all sorts of personal information, on a 3rd party server and don't understand that "free" can have a very high cost? The only value that Facebook (or other similar service) has is your personal info. It's the ability to match your email address, your IP address, all your various log-in IDs, your phone number to you and sell that information to advertisers (or give it to the Feds). Facebook is data mining gold; or, more aptly, fool's gold.

Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos

In its first big policy shift since Facebook bought the photo-sharing site, Instagram claims the right to sell users' photos without payment or notification. Oh, and there's no way to opt out.

Instagram said today that it has the perpetual right to sell users' photographs without payment or notification, a dramatic policy shift that quickly sparked a public outcry.

The new intellectual property policy, which takes effect on January 16, comes three months after Facebook completed its acquisition of the popular photo-sharing site. Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out.

Under the new policy, Facebook claims the perpetual right to license all public Instagram photos to companies or any other organization, including for advertising purposes, which would effectively transform the Web site into the world's largest stock photo agency. One irked Twitter user quipped that "Instagram is now the new iStockPhoto, except they won't have to pay you anything to use your images."

http://venturebeat.com/2012/07/13/no-windows-8-full-retail-box/

Microsoft may drop full retail Windows 8 boxes — and that’s a good thing
Come the release of Windows 8 this fall, it may be easier for consumers to figure out which boxed copy to purchase.
Microsoft will reportedly drop the full retail copy of Windows 8 and will only offer upgrade and “System Builder” versions of the OS in stores, report Windows gurus Paul Thurrott and Mary Jo Foley on the This Week in Windows podcast.
Windows 8 by pricing it at a mere $39.99, more mainstream users will still be picking up their Windows 8 upgrade in stores (where it’ll cost them $70)

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/realworld/375166/hidden-commands-of-windows-8

(for example, to insert a section break in Word you must go to Page Layout | Page Setup | Breaks, rather than the Insert tab where you might expect).

The Windows 7 UI has some interesting quirks, too. In Windows Explorer, what looks like a very simple menu at the top of the window is actually a toolbar that has words on the left and buttons on the right; the real menu is hidden until you press the Alt key, but even then you won’t see commands such as “Add current location to Favorites”, since that’s hidden under a right-click menu on the word Favorites at the top of the navigation bar.

Unless you right-click, you can’t see that command, so the only way to add a location to Favorites is to go up to that location’s parent folder and then drag the folder into Favorites. How would you know to do that? You’d have to guess

They have no idea how useful it is because they’ve never been shown, and they’re not sufficiently confident to experiment on their own – why would they press a key when they don’t know what it does? It might break their computer or delete all their files.
Why would they try pressing it in combination with another key if they do discover what it does when pressed on its own? There are actually more than 30 Windows key combinations in Windows 8, many of which work in previous versions, too (see table, above).

But Windows 8 now hides all these cues in its Metro style apps. Even Office 15, which is still only in limited, invitation-only, technical preview, minimises its ribbon by default. Without manuals, or any visual cues as to what’s possible and how to do it, will users be able to cope with it?

If you read the reviews of sample applications in the Windows 8 store, they’re littered with people complaining they can’t find how to search for an application, delete or share content.

These mechanisms are there in the apps but are hidden under the Charms: swipe in from the right, move the mouse to the top-right corner of the screen, press Windows-C, Windows-H or Windows-Q. Or select an item (touch and drag down slightly or right-click) and tap or click the Delete button on the App Bar, or press Delete. It’s difficult to describe these actions and the different ways of achieving them, let alone to do them.
Perhaps it’s inevitable that I should become an old fuddy-duddy, who just doesn’t get this brave new world of computing being designed by and for 20-somethings, kids who are so used to and unafraid of technology that they’re happy to right-click everything in sight and try dragging things here, there and everywhere just to see what might happen.
But I want computers and applications to work for everyone – regardless of age – and I’m afraid many of those people are going to need far more visual clues than Metro style apps will provide.

I will say this -- upgraded hardware this spring, & setting the win8 prev up was much easier, nicer than win7 or XP Pro. Very nice.

Microsoft is saying that win8 has better compatibility than win7.

the Microsoft man came to the P C Club said old windows 95 software most will work in windows 8 look like it may be nice not on a desk top

If you’re fortunate enough to have touch-based hardware platform to run Windows 8 on then Windows 8 will offer you a far better experience than any other Microsoft operating system. But if you’re sitting in front of a system that has a keyboard and mouse attached, then it’s hard to make a compelling case for Microsoft’s newest operating system.

I doubt I will, at least not until I've seen it in action for some time and read loads of reviews and, more importantly waited until the price has dropped to a reasonable point.

I don't know what SKUs/versions will be released, or what the differences will be, but there will be fewer than last time with win7, or Vista for that matter. In the US -- not sure about elsewhere -- MS released their Family Packs soon after Vista's & win7's release dates, but only for a limited time, & only for the Home Premium version. *If* they release win8 Family Packs, *If* the included win8 SKU does what you want, & *If* you can get a Family Pack for a good price [win7's went for as low as $80-$100], you get 3 licenses for less than the regular price of one, making it Very worthwhile IMO to jump in earlier rather than later.

I don't use mobile devices I doubt i'd need the Metro tech.

I'm not sure if what they've said can be believed, but assuming Microsoft sticks to its current stand, from now on, with win8, 9, 10 etc., the Start Menu is gone. IOW get over it now, get over it later, but get over it -- & add a 3rd party Start Menu if you want. :)

Will just have to see if there is extra functionality that will enhance my experience.

I think I remember you saying you're running Nvidia graphics, WR. If so, wait for them to release drivers for the win8 prev., download/install EasyBCD, backup, install the win8 prev to a separate partition, & use EasyBCD as/if needed to put your win7 boot menu back. Then use it to play your most demanding games, the ones that take the most hardware resources. I'd expect them to run faster in win8, though I can't say if any boost would be worth the hassle of moving from 7 to 8.

What worries me is if they have built it from the ground upward as mentioned in the article Hotdog linked to, what happenes to all my old applications and games, will they be compatible with this new Operating system, or will I have YET AGAIN dump good programs and games simply because they won't work any longer?

Microsoft is saying that win8 has better compatibility than win7. So far in the win8 prev. most of the win7 drivers I've tried work. OTOH I've also read that AMD/ATI may be idgits & not release win8 drivers for their 4xxx series cards & older -- since the 4xxx series is only a few years old, & some of those cards cost several hundred dollars, I'm skeptical they'd abandon them, but still maybe something to keep an eye out for.

--------

You could either set up a dual boot system and store all of your data off of the Win8 partition or a better solution is simply installing Win8 as a virtual machine and storing your data on a network drive.

FWIW, ChrisS, with win7 you can also boot to a VHD -- check out that option in EasyBCD if interested? When the win8 prev came out earlier in the year I already had a partition I was using mainly for temporary data storage, so just added win8 to that, but for folks that don't want the hassle of adding a partition to their drive that may be an option.

--------------

They keep coming up with all these new versions just to get people to spend their hard earned money on things that they don't need or that don't work.

Unfortunately Microsoft isn't the only one where PCs/laptops are concerned. XP's so popular that it's delayed the cycle tremendously, but expect more new hardware to abandon it -- eventually the companies making hardware will stop writing XP drivers & software entirely. It won't happen tomorrow, but some day you'll have as much trouble finding a printer that works in XP as you'ld have finding a win98 printer today. To a much lesser extent the same thing happens with software, with newer versions that won't work in older Windows. I've got some hardware now that will never work in XP, & a few apps that are the same way. I think a lot of people try to get around the manufacturer's planned obsolescence with Linux, but I've still got working hardware packed away that's too old for that too. :(

hello

i'v tryed the last few win8 bata's in a VM and don't like it at all
it seems like it's all about money with all the apps previews

and microsoft will force us to upgrade if your pc is not to old to use
the newer versions of windows so i'v been learning Linux in VM's and
installing different versions of Linux on old boxes i find that people
throw away lol

so i install say Ubuntu Linux on a old box then install Virtualbox and
install Win xp on Virtualbox using the key on the box show friends how
to make clones of it (if the hard drive is big enough) and it has enough
memory that way thay have a fresh copy and can mess up the clone delete
the clone and start a new one and my friends love it lmao

End of extended support for Win Xp April 8, 2014

As stated above.. I'm sticking with XP! It's been tried and true, so, as the old saying goes, "if it's not broke, don't fix it"! I'm not interested in ipads, xbox, or even cell phones (we get no reception here anyway), or any of the other new fangled gadgets everyone's getting. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I still have my 'older' desktop and it works for what my needs are, so why get into all the 'new improved'? They keep coming up with all these new versions just to get people to spend their hard earned money on things that they don't need or that don't work. Why should we all be guinea pigs trying out all the latest only to find they aren't worth beans?

RedHat will pay Microsoft to ensure Fedora 18 runs on Windows 8 PCs
RedHat, the makers of the popular Fedora Linux distro, made an announcement recently about the future of the OS that has some open source purists up in arms. Fedora 18 is expected to drop about the same time as Windows 8, and that means new hardware is going to be coming equipped with UEFI secure boot enabled. To ensure Fedora works smoothly for users, RedHat is getting cozy with the man.
access fee, but it’s just $99 !!
Almost all hardware will be Windows certified, so it will have the Windows boot keys. RedHat would otherwise have to create its own keys, then work with hardware vendors to implement them to avoid getting in bed with Microsoft. The logistics make that impossible.

I'm sticking with my Visa & Win7 Oses - I'm happy with them.

I'm not abandoning win7 either -- if the price is right I'll add win8 because it is faster rendering video, but too early to tell... MS is releasing fewer versions of win8, & assuming they sell the family packs like they did with 7, that *Home* version might or might not be too limited. Win8 has other advantages, but that added speed rendering/encoding video is the only thing I've seen that really interests me. Today's game seemed to run fine in my win7 32 VBox VM, but crashed the VM for the earlier win8 prev [haven't gotten last week's download set up yet]... I hope that's not a sign of future problems.

The main reason I'm replying though is my wife prefers Vista which you've mentioned... and she's finally starting to take baby steps, slowly working on getting her game collection moved over to win7. The reason? She's been steadily having more & more problems, I *think* because Vista's a bit of a forgotten, orphaned if you will OS. Vista may be the underpinnings of 7 but it is different, & software developers [including at Microsoft] spend more of their time worrying about the newer win7 & the still popular XP. Even if/when developers pay equal attention to each version, fewer people running Vista means less feedback & fewer bug reports -- if you've got 100 people screaming about a bug in win7, & only one complaining about a problem in Vista, which version gets all the attention?

Purely FWIW, I'm not entirely sure what MS is aiming at with win8 -- it's not the usual next step in Windows development we've seen since v. 3.1, but I think reflects Microsoft's trying to position themselves for a future with all sorts of devices besides PCs/laptops, all making use of *The Cloud*, often used for social networking & minimalist, lower cost games & applets. Put another way, I *think* this is Microsoft preparing to battle with Apple, Google, Facebook etc. for market share, & I *think* that this is Microsoft preparing for a future where the hardware we're using isn't always going to be a conventional PC or laptop -- they'll still be around, we'll still have & use them, but we'll have smaller, lower powered alternatives too that are in a word: convenient.

A few examples spring to mind... My one brother-in-law has little or no use personally for a regular PC. Like brother-in-law #2 he uses AutoCAD at work, so he's capable of using a PC -- away from work he just doesn't have a need or want. He does use & love an iPad, where he can browse the web, occasionally watch or share something on YouTube, sometimes play a quick, simple game, log into Facebook etc. He has no interest in collecting or editing photos, but he does have fun with an app making pictures of people look ridiculous. Brother-in-law #2 uses his older, slower PC at home to work in AutoCAD occasionally, & likes to play casual games, but that's 'bout it & he's not about to upgrade. His wife OTOH is a somewhat serious gamer, demanding fast, powerful hardware.

Microsoft wants a Windows tablet to replace that iPad, wants to offer better performance for gaming, & probably wishes it could forget about anyone that's happy with 5 year old tech. What's confusing is Microsoft forcing the death of the Start Menu -- they're even going so far as making it harder for 3rd party Start Menu add-ons to work. Maybe we're lab rats & MS wants to see if it can change our behavior -- maybe Microsoft figures a good percentage will stick with win7 anyway, so doesn't care if we won't upgrade -- maybe it's all a bluff, with the Start Menu re-appearing once they've collected enough data? Whatever their reasoning it's not just about win8, may not even have much to do with win8 itself, instead being all about win9 or 10? Some people worry about win8 being another Vista or ME -- XP taught us to say: "So what"? There will be enough sales that MS will surely recoup the money spent on distribution, & win8 is/was a necessary step to Windows 9... they'll more than survive. And finally, maybe some or even most of forcing Metro is all about the App Store? To say Apple has done well with theirs would be the understatement of the year.

Windows 8 Broken, Ex-Microsoft Worker Says
Mike Bibik, now an Amazon designer, says he hopes Fixing Windows 8 website will convince Microsoft to make changes to its new operating system
Windows 8 Beta: Visual Tour
A former Microsoft employee has launched a website that outlines all of the problems he sees with the forthcoming Windows 8 operating system.
Fixing Windows 8, as the site is called, outlines the bugs, quirks, and design flaws that Mike Bibik, who was a Microsoft program manager, says detract from the Windows 8 user experience. "Microsoft made it very clear that Windows 8 will work fantastically if you are using touch, mouse, or keyboard. Unfortunately, that's not entirely true," wrote Bibik, in his initial post on the website.
"The Start screen presents you with a bunch of colorful tiles to launch your apps. This isn't the entire collection of apps, just the default collection that Microsoft decided upon," wrote Bibik. "Getting to all of your apps is completely undiscoverable."
Bibik also gripes that Windows 8's new full-screen apps, which can only be downloaded from the new Windows Store, will cause problems for average users.
"The user might be able to figure out that their scroll wheel, used for years to scroll up and down, will now scroll left and right ... If not, the user sees a very small portion of the full app and is very confused. This confused user wants to go back to Start and try something else, maybe that will work."

Microsoft will ditch the Aero glass look in favor of Metro interface and a minimalist design.

Slow Uptake of Windows 8 Preview Hints at Users' Lack of Interest
According to Web analytics company Net Applications, only 0.11% of the computers that went online last week ran Windows 8. That number--representing 11 machines out of each 10,000--was the same number that Windows 8 averaged in March.
And it's significantly less than Windows 7's usage share at the same point in its development history.

We would lose everything already installed ...

Not if you planned ahead. You could either set up a dual boot system and store all of your data off of the Win8 partition or a better solution is simply installing Win8 as a virtual machine and storing your data on a network drive.

Use a couple of mouse clicks to explore the VMware vCenter Converter and the VMware Player. Both are free to download and use and you never have to worry about not being able to run your old stuff again. If your programs won't run on the new OS then you've got no worries, you've still got them in your VM. Or, if the new OS is crap then you've got no worries because it's just a VM, you can simply erase it.

Naturally you can also use Paragon's Virtualization Manager (which was free recently) and VirtualBox.

If I were running Dell, HP or one of the other big PC manufacturers then I'd partner with VMWare and Microsoft and provide a "VM Transfer CD" with the new Win7 or Win8 PCs to help encourage the XP folks to upgrade. But then I'd be selling a lot more hardware and that might stress my supply chain. I'm sure they're better off with people refusing to buy new hardware.

I had previously considered trying Windows 8 on one our computers, but decided against it. We would lose everything already installed on the computer that we can't get back. Most importantly, I don't have recovery software for the computer; if we decide we don't like Win 8 we're stuck with it...until the trial period is up, and then we have to choose between investing in the recovery software (to revert back to Win 7), or the Win 8 upgrade software. I figure I'm better off just sticking with what we've got; we know we like it.

I'm with you :)

I bought retail copies of Windows 7, so I'll be taking it with me from upgrade to upgrade. Until, of course, they release Direct X 15, which is only compatible with Windows XII. Or something to that effect.

If anyone's interested in trying out the Windows 8 preview here's a good article on how to run it through a virtual machine. Anyone currently running Windows 7 should be able to try this method.

http://windowssecrets.com/top-story/step-by-step-how-to-safely-test-drive-win8/

It's not a perfect way of trying it out, but it should at least give you some idea of how Win8 runs and if any of your software might be incompatible, though I think they learned their lesson with Vista.

This is on my 'to-do' list, whenever I get some time. Probably before October anyway :)

Intel, being the major supplier of Windows chips will be pushing Windows 8 as hard as they possibly can, especially now that Windows 8 will support alternative ARM chips, offering manufacturers more choice than before.

If Windows XP has taught us anything its that people will not leave a good OS no matter what Microsoft does. Maybe it's the way forward, but support for Windows 7 won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

I would look out for bargains on either OS, however. When Windows 7 was released I bought 2 copies (from the States) for around £65 total.

I doubt I will, at least not until I've seen it in action for some time and read loads of reviews and, more importantly waited until the price has dropped to a reasonable point. I only upgraded my computers 18 months ago. with six Win 7 licences that's a lot of cash to replace. I'm very happy with Win 7 and as I don't use mobile devices I doubt i'd need the Metro tech.

Will just have to see if there is extra functionality that will enhance my experience.

What worries me is if they have built it from the ground upward as mentioned in the article Hotdog linked to, what happenes to all my old applications and games, will they be compatible with this new Operating system, or will I have YET AGAIN dump good programs and games simply because they won't work any longer?

Windows 8 Tweaks and Tools
Windows 8 Consumer Preview has been out for a month, we guess you have had plenty of time to try out the latest Windows OS with its controversial metro interface.
Gallery: Windows 8 Tweaks and Tools

http://betanews.com/2012/04/13/metro-apps-on-windows-7-is-a-bad-bad-idea/

Metro apps on Windows 7 is a bad, bad idea

As we move closer to the launch of Windows 8 -- and the sea change that the Metro user interface brings to the platform -- there's an ever increasing drumbeat of both skepticism, concern, and apprehension depending on who you talk to.

End users are skeptical of Metro because they do not see its value.

There is now apprehension appearing among these folks that just not enough development is happening around Metro, and that signals trouble for Windows 8 overall. At least that's what ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes claims in his piece for ZDNet on Friday. His argument? With so few Metro apps appearing in the Windows Store (99 to be exact), it's time for Microsoft to start stimulating development. The solution? Bringing Metro to Windows 7 and even Vista.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/bring-metro-apps-to-windows-7-to-encourage-developer-growth/19730

Summary: Opening up Metro apps to Windows 7 users would give developers are al reason to start developing. It decouples the success of the new platform from the success of Windows 8.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/why-windows-8-wont-reimagine-hardware-that-much/19569

Summary: Problem is, failure is still very much an option, and the idea of Windows 8 being a catastrophic failure is a massive turn-off for hardware makers. Failures of devices such as Motorola’s Xoom and RIM’s PlayBook are still on the minds of all OEMs.

“The problem is,” writes Foley, “without these next-gen PCs and tablets, it’s hard for me - and I’d think others, too - to really grok how Windows 8 is going to work from running it on PCs and tablets that were designed for a non-touch-centric operating system like Windows 7.”

Yeah, that is a bit of a problem. Especially given that we’re probably six months or so away from Windows 8 being released. So, where is all this cool new hardware?

Don’t hold your breath for it just yet.

We can be certain of one thing. There will be Windows 8-specific hardware, in the form of tablets, ultrabooks and touch-enabled PCs, available at the launch of the operating system. The problem isn’t going to be the availability of hardware, but the price point of the hardware.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/windows-8-consumer-preview-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly/18674

Windows 8 Consumer Preview - The good, the bad and the ugly

Summary: If you’re fortunate enough to have touch-based hardware platform to run Windows 8 on then Windows 8 will offer you a far better experience than any other Microsoft operating system. But if you’re sitting in front of a system that has a keyboard and mouse attached, then it’s hard to make a compelling case for Microsoft’s newest operating system.

Windows 8 To Go On Sale In Ocober According To Bloomberg
Microsoft is keeping everyone guessing about the release date of both the Windows 8 RTM version and the final version. Bloomberg (via Windows 8 News) is now citing unnamed sources close to Microsoft that Windows 8 will go on sale “around” October 2012. According to the news article posted on the site, the release will include versions for both Intel and ARM devices.
