How Google is bringing history to life

The Google Cultural Institute brings together resources from museums and foundations for users to experience, particularly on tablets.

History can be seen as the sum of great stories, but it's through personal tales that we feel the impact of historic events. Google's latest project helps to give major world events such as the Holocaust, apartheid and D-Day more of an impact by incorporating real-life details into a multimedia history lesson.

Partnering with museums and foundations around the world, the Google Cultural Institute has paired text with photos, handwritten notes and other media to bring the stories behind major world events to life.

Several of the digital exhibits focus on the Holocaust experience at Auschwitz. "May 1944 — The Auschwitz Album" walks you through the horror of life at a concentration camp, with images and quotes from survivors. "Tragic Love at Auschwitz" tells the heartbreaking story of two doomed lovers.

Some of the stories focus on positive events, like "The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II." Others offer lighter takes on topics, such as "1954 – 1965: Years of La Dolce Vita," which tells the story of Italy during the time of Federico Fellini's movie "La Dolce Vita," complete with newsreels in Italian.

The stories are told through a horizontal, scrolling interface that works particularly well on a tablet.

You can click on images to get larger views with details about the source. Videos play within the page, so you can continue the narrative without switching windows.

Google offers virtual dives among world's coral reefs
The first underwater panoramic images were added to Google Maps in hopes that up-close views of underwater wonders will inspire people to protect them.
Google has begun letting users of its online mapping service take virtual scuba dives to explore precious living reefs being surveyed by scientists.
The first underwater panoramic images were added to Google Maps with the help of Catlin Seaview Survey scientific expedition, which hoped that the up-close view of underwater wonders would inspire people to protect them.

CSD reveals hundreds of sites stealing browser history
The bug exploits the way that many browsers handle links people have visited. Many change the colour of the text to reflect that earlier visit.

What You Should Know About History Sniffing.
Web sites are using simple Javascript tricks to snoop into visitors’ Web browsing history.
This reconnaissance works because browsers display links to sites you’ve visited differently than ones you haven’t: By default, visited links are purple and unvisited links are blue. History-sniffing code running on a Web page simply checks to see if your browser displays links to specific URLs as purple or blue.

The cascading style sheets history attack makes it easy for web masters to compile vast lists of links visitors have previously viewed. It exploits technology in virtually every browser that causes visited links to be displayed in purple rather than blue.

I installed today's (1/15/09) giveaway History Explorer and used the Activate.exe to try to activate the product. It seemed to activate it just fine but when I went to use History Explore it comes up with a message that says: "Your License is not valid. Please visit http://www.exendo.org to purchase a valid license."

Is anyone else having this problem?
