The commercial version is to make money in the markets where there is money to be made.

From the license agreement:

AVG Anti-Virus Free is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only. Use of AVG Anti-Virus Free within any organization or for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited. AVG Anti-Virus Free is absolutely not for use with any type of OEM bundling with SW, HW component or any service.

So basically they forbid using the FREE version in markets where they can sell it.

Free version = Make it popular
Commercial version = Make money.

Because they want to make a name for themselves (which they are doing very well) with the free version. And then hoping you will pay for the Pro version perhaps?

I use the free version of avg anti-virus. The 2 main differences between the free version and the pro version are:

1) Powerful scheduling — Pro AVG automatically provides recommended daily schedules for scanning and updating, and also allows you to create custom-scheduled events. Free AVG scheduling provides a simplified scheduling mode only.

2) Pro version is licensed for Commercial Use. Free version is not. (GOTD programs are not licensed for Commercial use).

The benefit of a GOTD AVG giveaway over the free AVG version would, IMO be minimal.

The free version is available at http://free.grisoft.com
