Microsoft Says Google Is Preventing It From Building A YouTube App For Windows Phone
But for whatever reason, though, Microsoft believes the higher-ups at Google are dictating that a similar app shouldn’t be available on Windows Phone. Heiner writes:

“Microsoft has continued to engage with YouTube personnel over the past two years to remedy this problem for consumers.

But just last month we learned from YouTube that senior executives at Google told them not to enable a first-class YouTube experience on Windows Phones.”

In a statement sent to AllThingsD, a spokesperson wrote:

“Contrary to Microsoft’s claims, it’s easy for consumers to view YouTube videos on Windows phones. Windows phone users can access all the features of YouTube through our HTML5-based mobile website, including viewing high-quality video streams, finding favorite videos, seeing video ratings, and searching for video categories. In fact, we’ve worked with Microsoft for several years to help build a great YouTube experience on Windows phones.”

http://someit.com/2013/01/02/microsoft-says-google-is-preve/

“[I]n 2010 and again more recently, Google blocked Microsoft’s new Windows Phones from operating properly with YouTube. Google has enabled its own Android phones to access YouTube so that users can search for video categories, find favorites, see ratings, and so forth in the rich user interfaces offered by those phones. It’s done the same thing for the iPhones offered by Apple, which doesn’t offer a competing search service.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_on_the_issues/archive/2013/01/02/still-seeking-resolution-to-search-competition-issues.aspx

Unfortunately, Google has refused to allow Microsoft’s new Windows Phones to access this YouTube metadata in the same way that Android phones and iPhones do. As a result, Microsoft’s YouTube “app” on Windows Phones is basically just a browser displaying YouTube’s mobile Web site, without the rich functionality offered on competing phones. Microsoft is ready to release a high quality YouTube app for Windows Phone. We just need permission to access YouTube in the way that other phones already do, permission Google has refused to provide.”

Google dismisses these concerns as little more than sour grapes by one of its competitors. But the reality is that consumers and competitors alike are getting “scroogled” across the Web on a daily basis from this type of misconduct.

Hopefully, Google will wake up to a New Year with a resolution to change its ways and start to conform with the antitrust laws. If not, then 2013 hopefully will be the year when antitrust enforcers display the resolve that Google continues to lack.

http://www.smh.com.au/it-pro/business-it/microsoft-finds-google-means-business-20121227-2bwy7.html

Microsoft finds Google means business
However, the notion is catching on with larger enterprises. In the past year Google has scored an impressive string of wins, including at Swiss drugmaker Hoffmann-La Roche, where more than 80,000 employees use the package, and at the US Interior Department, where 90,000 use it.

One big reason is price. Google charges $US50 ($A48) a year for each person using its product, a price that has not changed since it made its commercial debut, even though Google has added features. This year, for example, Google added the ability to work offline, as well as security and data management that comply with more stringent European standards. That made it much easier to sell the product to multinationals and companies in Europe.

Many companies that sell software over the cloud add features without raising prices, but also break from traditional industry practice by rarely offering discounts from the list price.

Microsoft's Office suite of software, which does not include email, is installed on a desktop PC or laptop. In 2013, the list price for businesses will be $US400 per computer, but many companies pay half that after negotiating a volume deal.

At the same time, Microsoft has built its business on raising prices for extra features and services. The 2013 version of Office, for example, costs up to $US50 more than its predecessor.

"Google is getting traction" on Microsoft, said Melissa Webster, an analyst with IDC. "Its 'good enough' product has become pretty good. It looks like 2013 is going to be the year for content and collaboration in the cloud."

Office 365 starts at a list price of $US72 a year per person, and can cost as much as $US240 a person annually in versions that offer many more features and software development capabilities. Microsoft says it offers more than Google for the money, but the product has not won many converts from Google.

Search & Destroy: Why You Can't Trust Google

I’d love to read it. But it’s available only in old-fashioned book form, and not as an eBook. Come on, guys. Enter the 21st Century, please: I’m not buying any more paper.

This is the other side of the Google story—the unauthorized book that Google does not want you to read. In Search & Destroy, Google expert Scott Cleland, shows that the world’s most powerful company is not who it pretends to be.

Google pretends to be a harmless lamb, but chose a full-size model of a Tyrannosaurus Rex as its mascot. Beware the T-Rex in sheep’s clothing.

Google has acquired far more information, both public and private, and has invented more ways to use it, than anyone in history. Information is power, and in Google’s case, it’s the power to influence and control virtually everything the Internet touches.

Learn how Google’s pervasive tracking and profiling destroys privacy and individualism.

Discover how Google Inc. uses its “Don’t be evil” slogan to mask unethical business practices.

Learn how Google’s market dominance and free products threaten competition, innovation, job creation, and economic growth.

Discover how Google’s hidden political agenda threatens individual freedom, democracy, and national sovereignty.

Understand the ramifications of Google imposing its radical values and ideology on the world.

More Free Google Search Tools You Might Not Be Using So Much
Using Google Search to Hunt For Free Applications & Future Technology
Yes, you can just search for free (or paid) applications on Google, completely removing the clutter of irrelevant results.
A Use for ‘Nearby’: Using this filter is a trigger for a local search.
A Use for Verbatim: A search using the ‘Verbatim’ filter gives you exactly or the exact literal word you search for.
The exact text operator is intext:

http://www.johntedesco.net/blog/2012/06/21/how-to-solve-impossible-problems-daniel-russells-awesome-google-search-techniques/

many people, including me, incorrectly assumed that adding a plus sign in front of the word forced Google to include it.
Actually, that search operator simply stops Google from changing the word into a synonym or correcting the spelling. It’s still possible that Google will drop the word from some search results, so it’s different from intext:.
(After Google+ was unveiled, Google dropped the plus sign operator and replaced it with double quotes. Typing “Alamo” is now the same as +Alamo.)
Search by region.
If you only want web pages for a particular area, you can search by region on Google’s advanced search page.
Restrict your search to a specific website.
The search operator site:[url] restricts your search to that particular website.
Beyond YouTube.
As popular as it is, YouTube is a subset of all the video services indexed by Google. Searching video.google.com searches every service, not just YouTube.

Australian tax crackdown to target Google

Australia has released draft revisions to tax laws, which it said were designed to stop big firms, including the local arm of Google, from shifting their income to countries such as Holland or Ireland where the tax rates are lower.

The move is in line with a push by Britain and Germany who want the G20 group of nations to make multinational companies pay their "fair share" of taxes

Almost every day when I access the users comments on GAOTD then I use ctrl-f with "//" to find interesting links - a lot from Giovanni :-)

Another useful search in the user comments is ctrl-f together with "no (" and a backward search from the last comment.
This will find the votes of each individual comment and I must admit that I mostly read the comments with positive votes this way.

Ctrl-f and "Paragon" will find all the comments issued by Paragon - but that should be obvious by now :-)

I'm used to seeing it because Advanced Search is on the Firefox default start page -- for some reason it's not on the page at google.com, but you can find it after you perform your 1st search by clicking the Gear icon at the far right [in Firefox it's just below the Sign in button].

You Google Wrong

1.One of the first things you learn in Google's Power Searching class is that if you know about the magic of CTRL+F then you are in the top 10 percent of all searchers.
2.How It Works: You can limit a search to one website using a site search. It's very easy. Say I want to find articles about a topic just from theatlanticwire.com. In the Google box, I type "site:Theatlanticwire.com" followed by my search term. That will surface only results from the websites http://www.theatlanticwire.com, as you can see below.
3."Removing Invasive Results"
4.Google Image Search
The Problem This Fixes: Sometimes an image comes across your screen and you want to know more about it. Google's Image search allows you to
How It Works: Head to google.com/images. In addition to entering text, the search box allows you to upload photos by clicking the camera icon, as shown below.
5. Google Operators

The Problem This Fixes: A lot of the times we want to filter our results one way or another. Google search relies on a series of "operators" to do that. The site search is just one of those. You can also filter by filetype and search in between certain numbers and do all sorts of things.

How It Works: Google has a cheat sheet list of those over here and how they work. Most of them function the same way as the site one above. For example, to filter by file type (say you just want to look at PDFs all day long), Google filetype:pdf and that's what you'll get.
Putting It All Together
How It Works: Watch teach talk about it below.

Google Drive opens backdoor to Google accounts

The Windows and Mac OS X desktop clients for Google's Drive file storage and synchronisation service open a backdoor to users' Google accounts which could allow the curious to access a Drive user's email, contacts and calendar entries.
The sync tool includes a "Visit Google Drive on the web" link which opens Drive's web interface in the default browser and automatically logs the user in. Somewhat problematic is the fact that this session can then be used to switch to other Google services such as GMail and Google Calendar.
next it be skydrive

Microsoft alleges Google, Motorola's Android phones infringe its mapping patent
Microsoft is suing Motorola Mobility in Germany over a mapping patent
Microsoft is suing Motorola Mobility in Germany over a mapping patent that Microsoft alleges covers the Google Maps app that ships on Motorola phones. The two parties met each other in the regional court of Munich on Thursday, where Microsoft announced it would also sue Google over the same patent.
According to Microsoft, some products sold by Google-owned Motorola Mobility infringe on a patent that describes a method of obtaining the map from one database, resource information such as Starbucks locations from a second database, and overlaying the two sets of data. A technique like this is used in Google Maps, which is installed on Motorola's Android devices.

How Google is bringing history to life

The Google Cultural Institute brings together resources from museums and foundations for users to experience, particularly on tablets.

History can be seen as the sum of great stories, but it's through personal tales that we feel the impact of historic events. Google's latest project helps to give major world events such as the Holocaust, apartheid and D-Day more of an impact by incorporating real-life details into a multimedia history lesson.

Partnering with museums and foundations around the world, the Google Cultural Institute has paired text with photos, handwritten notes and other media to bring the stories behind major world events to life.

Several of the digital exhibits focus on the Holocaust experience at Auschwitz. "May 1944 — The Auschwitz Album" walks you through the horror of life at a concentration camp, with images and quotes from survivors. "Tragic Love at Auschwitz" tells the heartbreaking story of two doomed lovers.

Some of the stories focus on positive events, like "The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II." Others offer lighter takes on topics, such as "1954 – 1965: Years of La Dolce Vita," which tells the story of Italy during the time of Federico Fellini's movie "La Dolce Vita," complete with newsreels in Italian.

The stories are told through a horizontal, scrolling interface that works particularly well on a tablet.

You can click on images to get larger views with details about the source. Videos play within the page, so you can continue the narrative without switching windows.

"On September 25, we announced that we would be changing some of the file exporting functionality in Google Docs on October 1 for scheduled release track customers.

We recognize that some of our customers would like more time before the change goes into effect. As you may have noticed, that change did not go into effect on October 1. In order to support our customers and help them through the transition, we have delayed the export format change for scheduled release track customers until January 31, 2013.

Google $22.5 Million FTC Fine Has No Teeth

FTC privacy fine represents less than a day's profits for Google. But if you care about privacy, you have options.

Brian Kennish, ex-Google engineer and founder of privacy software company Disconnect, offered via Twitter perhaps the most succinct assessment of the FTC and its settlement: A picture of a toothless man.

The settlement is a win for Google. The "record-setting" fine is less than Google's average daily profit in 2011 (about $32 million). For a person making $50,000 annually, the settlement amount is roughly comparable to a $100 speeding ticket, before taxes.

Better still, settlement includes no admission of guilt. As Rosch complains, the agreement stipulates that "[Google] denies any violation of the FTC Order, any and all liability for the claims set forth in the Complaint, and all material allegations of the Complaint save for those regarding jurisdiction and venue."

Had Google admitted guilt, that fact could have been used in other litigation against the company. And Google is facing a lot of litigation, in the U.S. and elsewhere.

So Google will pay the fine and the FTC will accept that Google

did nothing wrong. Everybody wins, except for Internet users, who aren't likely to have any more privacy than they had previously.

And ultimately, that's okay because most Internet users don't really care about privacy. They'd rather rely on free, ad-supported Internet services and social networks.

For those who do care about privacy, there are options. But those options may come with a cost, either in terms of money, diminished capabilities, or inconvenience. Here are a few:

Use a search engine that doesn't track, like Duck Duck Go or Ixquick. (Just don't expect these to be as comprehensive, broadly useful, or responsive as Google or Bing.)

Use Firefox, even though you may prefer Chrome, Safari, or Internet Explorer. Turn the knobs to provide as much privacy as you desire. (Pray that your favorite websites work without cookies and JavaScript.) Block ads.

Google acquires VirusTotal, but plans to keep it independent

Google has acquired VirusTotal, a free web service that inspects suspicious files against the most commonly deployed anti-virus solutions.

Founded in 2004, the service also allows users to input suspect URLs to scan websites for malware threats. According to an announcement on VirusTotal's website, the company is a longtime partner of Google.

The Google spokeswoman declined to comment on how the company plans to use VirusTotal, but Tuchen suggested the technology could be integrated into Google's array of web offerings, including its search engine, Chrome browser, as well as Gmail virus detection.

Google adds Gmail messages to search results and voice search to iPhones
“Sometimes the best answer to your question isn’t available on the public web - it may be contained somewhere else, such as in your email,”

“We think you shouldn’t have to be your own mini-search engine to find the most useful information - it should just work."

Search update brings new privacy pitfalls for Google
Unfortunately, it also threatens to revolutionise the ways in which users could lose their data and have sensitive information made public.

Suddenly, every Google user who works on a public machine or shared computer finds themselves at risk of email snooping. Should a user step away from their systems, or just forget to log out, would leave their machines at risk of snooping.

Google Wants Love and 100 Other Things
Google wants love. But so do six other companies. They are after .love, actually, a new “top-level domain” that could catch on as .com, .org and .net did.

Love might not prevail, but chances are, at least one of the domains in 1,930 applications for new extensions will. The domains are the letters that follow the dot in Internet addresses, and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, known as Icann, revealed the new requests on Wednesday.

Google proved to be one of the more ambitious applicants. It spent almost $18.7 million applying for more than 100 top-level domains, some expected, some not. Not surprisingly, the search giant wants .google, .youtube, .goog and .plus. It was the only applicant vying for .fly, .new and .eat. But it is going to have to fight Johnson & Johnson for .baby, Microsoft for .docs and .live, and Amazon for 17 top-level domains: .wow, .search, .shop, .drive, .free, .game, .mail, .map, .movie, .music, .play, .shop, .show, .spot, .store, .talk and .you.

Amazon also went after .tunes, .got, .author, .smile, .song, .joy, .bot, .like and .call.
