Users are getting infected with ransomware thanks to criminals managing to hack the DNS records of Go Daddy hosted websites.
That's not welcome news for the world's largest domain name registrar.

If you can't get everything running properly, I would get a Linux Live CD or ERD Commander and delete all previous Windows installations and do a complete fresh Windows re-install, though be sure to back up My Documents, Favourites and emails if you use Outlook or Outlook Express. You would then need to re-install programs. Some viruses require a complete disk re-format or even hard drive replacement.

As Robert says though, if Windows boots and runs fine with a changed system drive letter, you may just need to re-install some programs!

Still wondering about what caused the drive letters to change.

Reading your first post again you already tried repairing when you posted.
There's an interesting article over here.
It comes down to the fact non system drives letters can be easily changed using computer management(compmgmt.msc),but swapping system drive letters is kinda tricky.

So if your computer boots and runs ok now, there's no need to change the system drive letter.
(Imo apart from 7 ,Windows runs from any drive letter. And your CD/DVD Drive doesn't need to be D:\)

But..I wonder if you are still able to run any previously installed programs?

If not, the easiest way out would be to restore your machine with an image, unless someone comes up with a miracle solution
(or unless you're willing to do a lot of registry editing).

Hi hotdoge.
I'm not sure either about what you're trying to do.
IMO the best way to repair an existing XP installation that is still bootable and when 'system restore'and 'sfc /scannow' shatters,is to launch XP, put your XP CD into the drive and select Install->Upgrade. This will do a "Dynamic Upgrade" ,and install XP on top of itself.
You might not have this option with OEMs.Also you might need a XP SP3 slipstreamed cd.

If you don't have the option to do an upgrade (as with most oems),try to make or try to get your hands on a xpsp3 (slipstreamed) oem ,boot with it and try "R" again.
This should work.

DO NOT press 'R' if you do not see your existing Windows XP installation displayed.

Another option might be to 'downgrade' your existing XP installation first(to the SP version on your cd) .

Be sure to backup your important files first on external media!

hotdoge3 - I found the discrepancies in the links.

hotdoge3 - the first link, to the h online story on pdf vulnerabilities, and the link to the story on Firefox blocking/unblocking the MS add-on, lead to 404s. Not sure why, as the pdf story, anyway, is still up over there, and the other links are ok.

I succeeded to finally get AVS DVD to Go 2 (Beta) registered.

However it still does NOT close properly and does other strange things.

In the discussions within the AVS DVD to Go 2 (Beta) page, people stated that it had been corrected.

However the 3 files I downloaded from GOTD at different times are the exact same length and I installed the most recent of the 3. I waited throughout the day until I knew there would be the latest version.

it's not possible anymore to download AVS DVD to Go 2 (Beta) from GOTD and from AVS 4you.com it still says version 1.5.

Where can I get the latest updated version?
