Why pay when you can play fun games for free?

2011 is behind us and we're already well into the last year before the Mayan odometer rolls over. It's probably a good time to celebrate another year of economic recession and the rapidly approaching End of All Things with an absolute orgy of free videogames. Don't worry if you're among the growing ranks of the poor and jobless, you'll always have games to play without giving in to the unforgivable sin of internet piracy.

Meanwhile, if this year's bumper crop of $0.00 entertainment isn't enough, remember that over on our sister site we've still got 101 lists from 2011, the first and second halves of 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006. I'm trying Acidbomb 2. It seems to be doing the same thing but after I canceled the process the first time, I finally got a message from Vista asking if I wanted to run it. I'm trying again and I'm typing while waiting for it to do anything.

As for my computer, My system is:

• Vista32 Ultimate SP2
• AMD Athlon 64 Processor - 2.4 GHz
• 2 GB RAM
• 250 GB Hard Drive (unformatted) with 128 GB Free
• NVidia GeForce 6150 LE (latest driver as far as I know
• RealTek Audio drivers (again, latest driver as far as I know
• DirectX 10.0 (Vista)

Did I miss anything? With all the time digging out the details above, Acidbomb 2 still just sat stealing cycles. I aborted it just now. It does absolutely nothing!

Hi Dragonlair, have you tried Acidbomb 2? It's an updated and improved version of Acidbomb, which wizzard has conformed above is free. That may work on your computer better.

I personally get no problems running the game on my computer. What cpu and RAM is your computer running Dragonlair?

Except for my last email, he has answered. However, his games do not work well on my machine. One just takes forever to do anything and Acidbomb doesn't do anything but use cpu with absolutely no visible response!

Hi Wizzard. Sorry it took me so long to post images for this excellent freeware game. I've added them directly to your post rather than post them seperately. :) (I found the game in one of my old 'to post' folders actually, but had forgotten it was associated with the Shellblast author). Do you know whether Acidbomb 2 is now free? A cursory look at the developer’s website doesn't really give any information. I’m falling asleep after a very long day and can hardly concentrate so thought I'd ask you as you do seem very familiar with this developer. :)

I hope your cousin is okay; words cannot begin to express, nor convey the sympathy of such a loss.... I’ve also been there with my wife (12 years ago with our first child - Connor McLeod - {our clan name})so do empathize with how she's feeling. Time is a great healer; but even so, there will always be a tiny pain niggling at the back of our minds after such a loss - it brings a tear to my eyes just thinking of it.

Wizzard the tutorial tells you how to mark the pistons but not the strategy behind how to figure out where they are.

Wizzard! I got so choked up reading about your cousin, I couldn't even read further for the game. YOU'RE what's important to us, and what you're going through. My heart weeps for your cousin and your family. Please take care, and may peace settle in where there is sorrow.

I am becoming more and more dissatisfied by Vertigo games. They don't work for me. When I start the game, It hogs 100% of my cpu and gives absolutely no display! It just sits there hogging resources.

I have a similar problem with Spirits of Metropolis but at least it tries to play -- it's just very very slow and they don't know why.

My deepest sympathies to your cousin and yourself. Been there..... :(

I agree with everyone here.......Take care of your family FIRST, then everyone...Anyway I'm sorry to here about your cousin I know the what you are going through, my first child was stillborn. It hurts for a long time. I'm sure we have enough games to play for a while. Go take care of your cousin, I found that just being there to listen means alot.........

The instructions are somewhat lacking. I can't figure out how to play this one.

I can't believe that you seem to be worrying more about us than your own problems. I for one say - "Take care of yourself and your family and don't worry about us. We can survive for a few days on our own". My sympathies to you and your cousin.

Sorry for such a late posting. I've been at the hospital all day. My cousin who is literally like a sister to me, had her water break...about 5 months ahead of time. The baby has no lungs, so it will be born stillborn. It was odd getting the call this morning as she had just been over for dinner with us last night. Anyway....

Today I have another game from one of my favorite indie developers, Vertigo Games. Today's game is a puzzle/logic game titled Acidbomb. Acidbomb feels very much like Microsoft's Minesweeper, in that you have to defuse a bomb by determining which hexagon is a bomb piston and which are decoys. The following is an excellent review by Gamespy:

Have you ever wondered what goes through the head of an explosives specialist as he attempts to defuse a bomb before it goes off and kills millions of people? Get ready to find out. This game will have you thinking like the poor dude in all those movies, faced with a nest of wires as a countdown ticks away; he shakes and sweats as he hovers his wire cutters over the red wire ... No, the blue one ... No, the red one!

Acidbomb tutorial images:

Acidbomb, or possibly Ac!dbomb, is an intense game reminiscent of Microsoft's Windows staple Minesweeper. Bombs are represented by grids of hexagons. Some of those hexagons are bomb pistons, and some are decoys. Using beams of light that cross the grid, you have to mark which ones are which before the timer counts down to zero.

Acidbomb game play:

The game starts with an excellent tutorial that walks you through a few simple practice bombs, and then you're on your own. It's up to you to defuse each bomb before it goes off and spells doom for a building or a few city blocks. As you encounter different types of bombs, you have to visit a training facility to stay mentally prepared for what lies ahead.

Acidbomb game play:

This fantastic, free game randomizes the locations of the pistons and the dummies each time you face a bomb, so you'll never defuse the same bomb twice. Strategy and puzzle gamers, and anyone who likes to think while they play, will enjoy every tense second of Acidbomb.

Yet another excellent addition, imo, to an already excellent catalog of games.
