"Indeed, beautiful black and white photography doesn’t attract with its play of colors. Here close attention to composition, lighting, perspective and the context it is shot in are important. Hence, before considering the photos presented below please prepare some patience and time. This post presents some truly excellent examples of beautiful black-and-white photography."

Quite often I have checked into alternate giveaways, and I have found that they are not ALL free of viruses, spyware, and a host of other things that I don't want messing up my machine! At least what we get here is safe!!

Like some others have said, I find the alternative software suggestions one of the best things with the comment field. Especially if we are given at least some indication on what the freeware does in comparison with the GOTD. But I usually need more arguments than "This software is the BEST IN THE WORLD, SOOOOO much better than this junk!!!!!1" before I check it out. I also found it very useful when I a couple of times missed a good giveaway.
I've found the best way for me to learn about a software from an evaluation in the comments is to compare it to a well known freeware.

Biologist rescues drowning, tranquilized bear

Personally I think the freeware recommendations are the best part of the comments.

I agree with techgurl, i actually do know, that there is a separate threat for alternatives of the giveaway the day, but what if someone (like me) would want a freeware alternative, that might give you regular updates instead of the ones from giveaway team?
I prefer to see it below of the actual giveaway ,than going to a separate threat.
and for all annoying or senseless comments, i have learned to skip them all pretty quickly :)

P.S.: for the same reason, I'm mot going to comment on that comment except here.

A Very Proper Charlie- ignore at worst, ridicule if pushed to it.

See Dean Ing's 'Soft Targets'. or the shorter 'Very Proper Charlies' that was in Destinies of october 1978.

might actually be a workable strategy against terrorists- but with our current crop of 'OhMyGod' leaders and newsies I ain't holding my breath.

I also recommend reading and pondering the logic and factoids in John Ringo's 'The Last Centurion'.

good story, too.

heh, hoss, nice analysis- but also an example of what I look past in the comments. Kinda like not letting trolls get a response, ignore the nonsense attacks and bs, no-value ego postings- like comment 104 today-

1) 99% of the recommendations are *not* better than what GAOTD is offering. Despite claims by others.

99% sounds like your 'opinion' since you did not post any references to prove your point. It's just a number *you* picked. A better statistic might be - *you* didn't care for 99% of the alternatives that were posted. That's fine, you have the right to your opinion.

2) 99% of Alterative Free programs are a personal choice which is only useful to 1% of us.

I would say that all (100%) of the alternative free programs are a personal choice (either you like it or you don't) but I would guess that they are useful to a lot more than 1% of other users. Again, just a number *you* picked.

I will agree that you have a valid point, why bog down the comment section with all the clutter. But to me, in the long run, it's not much of a problem and it does help compare that day's offering to other programs that are similar. People can then compare similar programs to see which one they prefer. And if someone has a long list of programs or websites, they could post a link and put them in the forums.

Thought the following was inspiring:

HEROISM COMES FROM THE HEART

Bob Butler lost his legs in a 1965 land mine explosion in Vietnam. He
returned home a war hero. Twenty years later, he proved once again that
heroism comes from the heart.

Butler was working in his garage in a small town in Arizona on a hot
summer day when he heard a woman's screams coming from a nearby house.
He began rolling his wheelchair toward the house but the dense shrubbery
wouldn't allow him access to the back door. So he got out of his chair
and started to crawl through the dirt and bushes.

"I had to get there," he said. "It didn't matter how much it hurt."
When Butler arrived at the pool there was a three-year-old girl named
Stephanie Hanes lying at the bottom. She had been born without arms and
had fallen in the water and couldn't swim. Her mother stood over her
baby screaming frantically. Butler dove to the bottom of the pool and
brought little Stephanie up to the deck. Her face was blue, she had no
pulse and was not breathing.

Butler immediately went to work performing CPR to revive her while
Stephanie's mother telephoned the fire department. She was told the
paramedics were already out on a call.

Helplessly, she sobbed and hugged Butler's shoulder.

As Butler continued with his CPR, he calmly reassured her. Don't
worry, he said. "I was her arms to get out of the pool. It'll be okay. I
am now her lungs. Together we can make it."

Seconds later the little girl coughed, regained consciousness, and
began to cry.

As they hugged and rejoiced together the mother asked Butler how he
knew it would be okay. "The truth is I didn't know," he told her. "But
when my legs were blown off in the war, I was all alone in a field. No
one was there to help except a little Vietnamese girl. As she struggled
to drag me into her village, she whispered in broken English, 'It okay.
You can live. I be your legs. Together we make it.'" Her kind words
brought hope to my soul and I wanted to do the same for Stephanie.

There are simply those times when we cannot stand alone. There are
those times when we need someone to be our legs, our arms, our friend.

freeware pointed out may already be known to me (and thus may be the same for any particular user), for good or ill- usually there's at least one that I haven't- but aside from the semi-fanatic zeal often displayed it's overall never a waste of time having alternates pointed out.

I save a copy of each day's comments so if somebody asks for something, it saves me time searching for something to suggest at least trying first- and occasionally it'll save *my* bacon, too.

some are good, some stink, but even so it's a start.

And while some people couldn't pour sand out of a boot with instructions on the heel [readme.txt? whazzat? -sigh-] whether clueless, stupid or just not paying attention, the effect is the same.

plus those with real problems that are just having 'their day in the barrel'.

I'll wade through the chest-beating for possible gems just in case.

I don't mind the posting in the comments about an alternate software to the Giveaway of the day. But instead of just saying that the alternate is better, I wish some would actually download the Giveaway to give us a honest comparison or why they think it's better or what makes is similar.

We have some that comment that the giveaway is full of spyware and they can't seem to register it and their alternate for whatever reason is 100% better, all in the same paragragh. Then when you click on their alternate link you end up looking at a website with a program that isn't even close to what Giveaway is giving out.

Wasn't sure where to post this... I could be the last person online who has not heard about this. But, on the off chance there are some others who have not heard about it, here it is.

There is no single place to list EVERYTHING on the net. However, someone sent me this website that has SOMETHING for just about everything. On one website, you can click on over 400+ different sites... all arranged by categories for easy perusal. Mark this one in your favorites if nothing else.
