If possible please download ONLY from the developer's site. It should be the latest version and there you'll mostly find change-log and bug-fixes.

I'm not firm in converting and never used FormatFactory, so I can't give any recommendation.

There is an advice from the dev:

Attention : If you fail to run FormatFactory , Please download this patch to fix your system runtime. vcredist_x86.exe

This is the developer's site with the original download link and that patch:

http://www.formatoz.com/index.html

---EDIT---
Oooops - now I understand what JKEngineer means:
When you click on the "Main Site Download" on the formatoz web site, you are redirected to brothersoft (an absolute NO-NO for me).
Clicking on "Local Site Download" redirects you to "http://www.pcfreetime.com/download.html" - it loads very sloooooowly and the download will take nearly 1.30 hours! on my fast dsl line.
Under About I found

Welcome to spread FormatFactory without any modification.

Let's hope that's correct.

---2nd EDIT---
UniExtract found these "plugins" in FFSetup230.exe : askChecker + askToolbar + QuickStores + sobar

I think Format Factory will do this for you. It won't do the download, but it will convert the files. It is free, so you won't need a purchase order.
I have an older version installed on one machine and have used it fairly happily. I just downloaded a newer version for another machine yesterday and found that it asks to install lots of toolbars and similar, all of which I denied. Nevertheless, the program interface now includes a brothersoft.com link and an ebay tool link in its header.

In downloading, I went to their main download link on brothersoft and got major warnings about the site from Norton. I ended up downloading from another site.

A point of confusion: my existing version has been popping up an offer to upgrade to v 1.85. The version on their main site is 2.3 and the one I found avoiding brothersoft is 2.2. Also, their older version and google point to formatoz.com while the newer version points elsewhere, but seems to be the same actual website.

I have seen others comment positively on the program, including in this site.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried VDW, but I couldn't get it to work correctly on my system. The conversion of an asx file into a mp4 yielded a file with no audio. Downloading from YouTube didn't work either - the file was never written to disk. Guess I'll just have to keep looking.

I recently cleaned my system of all malware and other nasty stuff. I've got McAfee installed, along with MalWareBytes and WinPatrol. I downloaded and installed the Web Video Player by Socusoft and the very next day, on boot-up, McAfee said it had caught and deleted a trojan. Coincidence? Possibly.

Before the virus warning, I tried the program and liked the ease of use. I mentioned it to my boss, who told me to buy 20 copies. Part of the process is making a purchase order and I needed the company address for that. Not shown on their website. Nor is the phone number. I sent them a request for that info, and they responded they are located in Shenzen City, China. When I tell my boss today about the trojan and the company location, I'm sure he'll say we can't buy it.

So, the question is, any suggestions for similar software by a different company?

Thanks,

Mr. Wizard

Their site might've gone down - you can get it from somewhere else:

PlayFLV http://www.mediastore.com/software/

This program installs and registers FLVSplitter by Gabest. It binds FLV files to Windows Media Player, enabling playback of FLV files by double-clicking them. The installer prompts to download and install ffdshow, required for movies in Flash 7 file format. An uninstaller is included in the package.

If all you want is the functionality to play FLV files in media player - this will give you "just the bare essentials" without installing all the extras you don't care about.

Some other options: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_flv_files.cfm

Back on April 11, GOTD offered Videoget from Nuclear Coffee Software. It allows you to convert videos to various formats as you rip them from supported sites. (The list is at 200+ sites and growing.) It's one of the best giveaways I've seen here. Very easy to use. You can download a trial version from the Nuclear Coffee site or buy the thing for a measly 20 bucks. I don't get all gushy about a lot of giveaways, but this one was really worthwhile.

Thank you all you three, alexiussg, Keilaron, Jucati

I think, after reading the wiki article i understand a bit better.

and i think, i have expressed myself not very clearly in my original post, I was just curious about the differences of those two file extensions.

I have downloaded the swf-file already weeks ago successfully with orbitdownlaoder ( http://www.orbitdownloader.com/ )
but up until the GOTD of two days ago ( Moyea SWF to Video Converter Pro ) I was not successful in converting it to .avi,
I tried SUPER and MEDIACODER already, but i am not software savyy enough to made them work.

my curiosity was, like i said, flv seemed to be so easy to convert with so many online-sites, thus SWF seemed not.

but i am all good now, my newly converted swf file is working as avi perfectly.

SWF is typically vector-based, i.e., rather than keeping information on what color goes where (for example), it will instead remember mathematical information such as "Draw a circle, this size, this color, with this deformation".

FLVs are movies, on the other hand, and are just encapsulated inside SWF (I think); They contain an actual movie in another format, though I'm not certain what format that is (Maybe it's own, maybe just MP4, ... dunno).

Actually, have a look at Wikipedia's page on the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_Video

SWF is a native file; that means, it's a Flash object (video/game/application) written natively in Flash and meant to be viewed/interacted with a Flash player.

FLV is a flash video player. The buttons, progress bar, volume control, etc are all natively built in flash, but the video itself may have originated from any number of formats. I don't know all the specifics, but I think everything from .mov to .avi and others are supported in FLV conversion.

I hope that helps.

(if you want to download a .swf file, typically you should be able to find its actual location on the server you're visiting by checking the html source)
