hotdoge3 - I found the discrepancies in the links. The first one, on vulnerabilities in .pdf applications, should be http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Vulnerabilities-in-several-PDF-applications-833449.html

The post on Firefox first blocking, then unblocking the MS extension is just missing a hyphen: http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/Firefox-blocks-then-unblocks-Microsoft-add-on-832309.html

hotdoge3 - the first link, to the h online story on pdf vulnerabilities, and the link to the story on Firefox blocking/unblocking the MS add-on, lead to 404s. Not sure why, as the pdf story, anyway, is still up over there, and the other links are ok.

Geez...I am sorry but I honestly need help. I know this is probably the wrong way to ask, but where do I go to find help locating the best free flash creator? I need to make a video for my site, and I hoped to do it myself. I found Toufee, but it is a membership, I was hoping to download a freestanding tool. I want to create a video of some of my graphics to use on site and possibly for conventions to advertise. I would like to be able to make the pics fade, tile, add music I have bought for video use and other effects. I am a TOTAL NEWBIE at this! So it has to be idiot proof! LOL ;) Anyone want to direct me to the best link/post? your help is and will be appreciated! :)
ThanX!

Hi Folks, I haven't posted anything in a while..had things happening here. I am still having the bouts of depression and the migraines(I see a neurologist in Nov.) and we just found out that the hubby has to have an operation on his shoulder for bone spurs. It took him 4 months to actually see the doctor and now he has to go for tests. With Ontario wait times we are guessing maybe Jan. or Feb. at the earliest. He does NOT even have the appt. for the tests yet. WYSIWYG when it comes to free health care.

Anyways, I have been getting this RSS feed from Softonic They have some interesting feeds; they even have a game section, some are demos but a lot of them are free Softonic Games They have a link just for all the free games.

This week I got something interesting for Flash Games from them. I don't play a lot of flash games because we have a bandwidth cap plus I am not into the advertising or chat that some sites offer. Plus this is nice if your internet is down you can still play your favorite flash games without being connected to the internet. This piece of software takes your swf files and converts it so it can play solo on your PC. You, basically, download the file, convert it with the program and then install it in the program. Once you install the program, it has a readme that explains where to find the file for IE and FF(See why I wanted to know where my cache was..Mango Princess..NOW I know). It has to be a swf file and you just have to look for that because they don't name the files with game name most the time.

The Software:
http://flashoffliner.en.softonic.com/

Their website:
http://www.mystercrowley.com/sw_fo_en.php

And then, once I found that..I found this...http://dosbox.en.softonic.com/ for some of you older gamers that might still have some old DOS games/programs laying around.

"DOSBox allows those of you still nostalgic of that not-so-long-ago time to emulate games and applications that ran under DOS. Obviously you will still need to remember all the basic DOS commands, to mount and launch applications or simply search through directories.

The DOSBox website provides a big list of all the games that can be played under DOS but does not include download links. You'll have to search the web to find them.

The advantage DOSBox has over other emulators is that it doesn't limit itself to games. Remember a great application you used to run on DOS, years back? If you find it, there's a good chance it will work in DOSBox.

DOSBox can emulate any game or application that used to run under MS-DOS. You'll need to be comfortable with DOS commands to use DOSBox though.

It has been over 12 years since I have used any DOS so I am quite rusty but I thought I would post it for any one that might could use it.

I have gotten several things from Softonic and I always scan for stuff and have found nothing bad in the files. But as a precaution, I would always scan...It is just force of habit with me and I have found, it is a good habit to develop.

Enjoy!

PS. WR, don't stop now..See what you got me doing now. LOL. I am in the same boat as the Princess/Clownie. I never knew anything about games until this site and your reviews. I have learned so much from you. I may not like every game you post..but I know there are games I will like or try when you get around to them. "Another one's trash is another one's treasure." Thank you.

Thank you Bubby and Funkymom for the links. I'll definitely check them out now. :)

That's another one for my growing favorites collection. Maybe we shouild start a thread where the community can post their favorite threads. Of course we would have to be careful with respect to links to red sites, pornography and the like. It should be purely dedicated to games and another one for applications. With community reviews etc about the games that are found.

For those interested in intriguing puzzles, check out 'Eric Haas Was Right' on LazyLaces site: http://www.lazylaces.com/

LazyLaces is devoted to interesting games. Some are the 'poke around and find clues' variety, others are likeable little quest-type adventures or logic games.

Several have exceptionally high quality in design and graphics, not the sort one would expect on a free games site. There are, of course, the retro-style games such as 'Phantasy Quest' and 'Bloons.'

Be sure to check out some of the links! I found LazyLaces via Spluch - http://spluch.blogspot.com/ - (another great site).

Thank you all you three, alexiussg, Keilaron, Jucati

I think, after reading the wiki article i understand a bit better.

and i think, i have expressed myself not very clearly in my original post, I was just curious about the differences of those two file extensions.

I have downloaded the swf-file already weeks ago successfully with orbitdownlaoder ( http://www.orbitdownloader.com/ )
but up until the GOTD of two days ago ( Moyea SWF to Video Converter Pro ) I was not successful in converting it to .avi,
I tried SUPER and MEDIACODER already, but i am not software savyy enough to made them work.

my curiosity was, like i said, flv seemed to be so easy to convert with so many online-sites, thus SWF seemed not.

but i am all good now, my newly converted swf file is working as avi perfectly.

and maybe i am in the minority here, but i dont mind the screensavers.
some looks great, some are ugly and those i can skip easily.

SWF is typically vector-based, i.e., rather than keeping information on what color goes where (for example), it will instead remember mathematical information such as "Draw a circle, this size, this color, with this deformation".

FLVs are movies, on the other hand, and are just encapsulated inside SWF (I think); They contain an actual movie in another format, though I'm not certain what format that is (Maybe it's own, maybe just MP4, ... dunno).

Actually, have a look at Wikipedia's page on the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_Video
That should tell you all you want to know :> If not, ask more questions :D

SWF is a native file; that means, it's a Flash object (video/game/application) written natively in Flash and meant to be viewed/interacted with a Flash player.

FLV is a flash video player. The buttons, progress bar, volume control, etc are all natively built in flash, but the video itself may have originated from any number of formats. I don't know all the specifics, but I think everything from .mov to .avi and others are supported in FLV conversion.

I hope that helps.

(if you want to download a .swf file, typically you should be able to find its actual location on the server you're visiting by checking the html source)

use Super converter(www.erightsoft.com), but if your swf has mouse click events, sounds on-off button, play/pause buttons etc the converters won't work. :)

I was just wondering, does anyone knows here, what the difference between swf and flv files are??
I just dl the goatd from yesterday , and it works perfectly for me, but i have always wondering, why those million of sites, that allow us to download and convert flv files for free from youtube & co (like http://www.media-convert.com, http://www.zamzar.com, http://www.vixy.net and two dozen others) but none of them worked with swf files.
