Duane,
Thanks for the tip. I had tried Recuva already, but it did not help me. I also was advised on the Dutch gaod-page by Bruwani to try GetDataBack for FAT ($69, try-before-you-buy). That did not succeed either. What helped me this morning was the now-freeware DIY DataRecovery CHK-Mate. After copying the hidden folder FOUND to another drive, CHK-Mate converted the majority of the CHK-files automatically to pdf's. I have not done a complete check, but it seems I have recovered the majority of the missing files.
CHK-Mate can be found a.o. at http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/chkmate.htm

I don't know if it will work or if it's even what you need, but try recuva.

http://www.recuva.com/download

It will recover 0 byte files, amongst other things. Again I don't know if it will help, but it's worth a shot!

-Duane.

The backup programme offered a few days ago did not backup my pdf scan files on an external USB FAT disk, coupled to a hardware Linux Samba server. Worse, a number of pdf files now show a size of zero bytes and cannot be opened anymore. Does anyone has a suggestion how I could recover these files?
Thanks in advance!
