Windows 8s Boot Experience Will Be Different
Windows 8 users have 200ms to hit that key during boot. If they miss by one second, Windows 8 will skip the advanced boot menu and boot right into the operating system. To put this into perspective, users who type fast manage to hit four times the F8 key in a second, which results in individual key press intervals of 250ms. If you do not get the timing perfectly right, you will bypass the boot menu.
You can alternatively hold down the Shift key before you click on the system’s Restart option, or run the command shutdown /r /o for the same effect.

Windows 8 Says Goodbye To F8 Reboots
Windows 8 will display new menu of troubleshooting choices to give users of fast-booting PCs and tablets plenty of time to enter alternate startup modes such as Safe Mode.

I stay with XP & Windows 7 boot time ok for me I don't know if you do more work only boot a few time a day at the max.

Hmm, this sounds like a good reason to upgrade afterll, though i'm still quite impressed with the boot up times i get with my new computer, using an SSd as the platform for my win 7 operating system and ensuring everything apart from the most essential of programs are installed on a seprarate traditional hard drive I get cold boots ups at 24 seconds, which isn't bad. Still, seven seconds is phenominal. :)

I'll have to see how much an upgrade will cost. Though probably won't upgrade all of my computers as I've only recently finished upgrading all of my older computers a few months ago. I can't imagine forking out several hundred pounds just to speed up the boot times on my older computers (Besides the oldest wouldn't be able to take advantage because they don't support a UEFI BIOS capable motherboard).

It would be better to buy small SSD's to install your present operating systems on each of them as the boot up does improve significantly with an SSD.

I have opera mini on my Motorola cell phone and it does a great job. Post a download link for Opera 10.51. I use Iron now (chrome without the reporting back to Google) and its fast. I also use Firefox and its pretty good too. I would love to check out the new updated browser by opera.

http://www.appscout.com/browsers/

A new Opera version arrived this week, with the slogan, "The fastest browser on earth." And by some measures, that's not an exaggeration. In my tests with the SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark, Opera indeed came out ahead of Firefox, Chrome, and
Internet Explorer by significant margins. And it outpaces its own previous version by a whopping 1,110 percent.

I have been using "WhereIsIt" for over 7 years. I find it very stable, fast and free of bloat. It has a decent support for plugins for extended features - and downloadable language support for... well "lots". (not Freeware, but worth absolutely every cent).

here's an example of what I think might go over well: InsideCat , the best disc catalog I've found- the free version is limited to 100 discs, but for somebody with 700+ CD-R's and 370 DVD-R's the pro version has proven itself to retain high speed and small catalog sizes even with waaaay too much data on board, and still have more info than just file names as well- and search *real* fast.

version 4.0 just showed up with added features, too.

Are you running it on Vista? If so try running the game in compatibility mode for XP SP2.

Right click the desktop icon, left click properties, compatibility tab, check the box to run in compatibility mode, choose XP which should be the first one listed.

Try compatibility mode (with XP) for any of the games or programs offered here that don't run well on Vista. It very well may be the fix for many. A lot of deveopers aren't running Vista on their own computers.

Firstly - don't bother redownloading it - if you manage run the setup/activate etc programs without them crashing - there is probably nothing wrong with your download.

Also I'm not clear on what you mean by "hanging up" - is the mouse pointer completely stopping or freezing - or just running slowly/sluggishly. Or is your entire windows desktop freezing (eg. pressing numlock or caps lock - doesn't turn the light on you keyboard on/off).

Some other games (eg Dwarves 2) - I have found run my CPU at 100% and unless I close all the other running programs (including the other programs in my system tray) the game is basically unplayable.

Try closing down all your other running programs (check task manager also) - just to see if that fixes the problem. (All the shutdown programs should restart automatically when you reboot your pc).
