Since Snow Leopard’s release, a few users have reported a scary data loss incident related to using the Guest account. Basically, after upgrading to Snow Leopard with an existing Guest account in Leopard, these users logged into their Guest accounts, then back into their normal accounts, only to find all of their data gone—none of their files were there,
all preferences were reset, and all programs acted like they were being launched for the first time ever.

I think it got me earlier today. I was taking a nap and woke up to see my computer caught in endless set of loops. It looked as if it was trying to access a program, but

was being denied or it was closing a program and it was being denied. It was strange.
It kept popping up some sort of failed to execute or access,

I was just waking up so was still foggy. I quickly hit control-alt-delete, but that didn't work so yank the power and rebooted.

No virus after several scans- I guess I was invaded. bastar@#@#

The strange thing is lots of shortcuts are missing, at least half, so half my programs arent showing although they there and working, except system mechanic.
It took out system mechanic for what ever reason.

I just thought of why I might be able to reset with iolos, I couldnt do it with windows.

Thanks for the post hotdoge

This is by far the the most useful one yet, guess cause it it affect me real time.lol
Thanks any though txnnok

Terri218,

With all the technology getting a boost the hackers get a boost too. The programmers machines on the dark side on running faster and excuting code quicker.

They infiltrate all of computers and just sit till needed and create a bot net. Which is millions of computers working at the same time. Which is way faster than than any super computer, not to mention that they can flood any server with request and shut it down.

Those guys guys are getting faster and smarter and some work as teams.
+ imagine group after group of these popping week after. Or if just 10 guys took or 30 computers a week.

Hotdoge could probably find the real stats and I bet they are way way higher, even with good guys fixing computers and people fixing their own.

zero-day vulnerability affecting Windows 7 and Vista.

The flaw in Windows 7 could allow an attack which would cause a critical system error, or "blue screen of death," according to researcher Laurent Gaffie.

Gaffie wrote in his blog that the flaw lies in a Server Message Block 2 (SMB2) driver.

Ever visit a webpage and can't get it to work no matter what you do? You try all 5 of your web browsers and it still comes back with an error. Then you begin to wonder if it's just you or if the site really is down. Worry no more, simply check if it's Down For Everyone Or Just Me?

Simple site, won't win any appearance awards, but it gives you a starting point if you're having trouble connecting to websites. At least it'll steer you in the right direction!

If it's happening on both your computers it would indicate it has something to do with with an external source such as your modem or router. Have you tried re-booting these? Wen you turn the power off make sure you leave it for atlease 20 seconds to ensure any residual charge (usually stored in any capacitor on the modem and routers circuit boards) within the modem and router are dispersed.

This already happened to me 2 or 3 times:
When trying to install a Giveaway I am getting following error:
[quote]The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
I am still getting the "Activation Successful" message with the activation key. Nothing seems to have been installed on my PC. I tried to install on a second PC - same problem.
Incidentally, the 1st PC run on XP Professional, the 2nd on Vista.
Any suggestions?

Yeah, I originally had the moderator issue confused too, until I found out that you actually have to be an Administrator to moderate the comment section. In fact, WR can't moderate the GOTD, only the Games pages, if I remember correctly. Actually, there are precious few who can. Bubby is the only one I know of that regularly posts in the forums. The one or two others are GOTD staff. Bubby maybe the only one outside the staff who knows who can and can't, and he may or may not know how many or few of the staff Admins there even are. Obviously, these problems are related to the new system, and the admins may have to fix them on a case by case basis if they can't see any trends. :( I hope they can fix Whiterabbit's erratic problems. If HE can't post consistently, we're ALL in trouble. :)

Happy, LOL, for the male"-ification". I sometimes have the same fate.

Another wrong assumption is that mods of the forums can moderate the comments.
If I could, believe me, the list of comments would be very short on certain days.(Especially the cliffhangers would be in great danger...)

BuBBy (with others) is moderating the comments - but of course not 24/7. Several times he offered users to send him a PM when they have problems, and he several times could help.
WR is moderating the games comments.

By the way, aRenegade, I don't think it is appropriate, to tell somebody who is moderating in their free time s/he "could do a little more". I'm sure there are always others who could do it better - if they just would do anything. We don't do it for money, we don't do it for a medal or for hymns of praise, it's just to help other users. It's my way to say "Thanks" for all the help I got in the WWW.

Hi aRenegade, thanks much for your concern and thoughtfulness regarding this matter.

I sent a message to the GOTD Admin team and today received a follow-up message from one of the team members - so, I am confident that we will (altogether, hand-in-hand) be able to figure out what's going on.

I also am very touched by the outpouring of support that I am getting from very nice GOTD members (like you, aRenegade, and others) about my posting/review issue. The GOTD community (mods and general membership, alike) are a wonderful bunch of people.

HappyPerson I don't understand why your comments are being flagged as spam on the main site. By definition spam means, "to post a message many times to a newsgroup, or an inappropriate message to multiple newsgroups." I don’t see anything that could be deemed inappropriate or unwanted about your posts.

Notblocklox, the occasional drop is one thing, but HappyPerson has been having problems that I think go beyond the occasional drop. His or her comments are no more inappropriate than ashraf's. They both use the same format (i.e., good, bad, and conclusion) with the exception being HappyPerson doesn’t resort to cliffhanger summaries as a means of driving traffic to a personal web site. So, anyone who wants to promote their personal stuff should be allowed to do so; I believe the term is “equal opportunity”.

Perhaps notblockox, since you are a moderator you could do a little more to check out the spam filter tags? And HappyPerson a question; who exactly have you emailed or pm’ed on the GOTD team to see what up with all this?

"The Truth Is Out There"

Hi GOTD Team,

The ratings system (i.e., the seven evaluation categories) contain a glitch, whereby our ratings magically disappear into never never land, after we input our comments and click the "submit button."

Today, I provided ratings and comments for all 7 categories, clicked the submit button, and everything looked okay at first (i.e., it said there was one review, namely by me) -but when I later clicked on the review links, my comments completely disappeared into thin air, and the ratings categories incorrectly displayed zero (0) reviews for certain areas (not for all, just some).

Others have also mentioned this before, so I hope GOTD is working on a fix soon.

Thanks,
Happy

When a software has to be installed and activated online, I would never disable the security. IMHO no programme is worth that risk.
Have a look in the forums this problem has been discussed several times before. Maybe you'll find the solution for your problem there. If not give us some more information about your system and what you already have tried.

Check your internet connection, make sure the wrapper can access the Internet (check your firewall), and run as admin. If it doesn't work, reboot and try again. It happens sometimes with me, but retrying usually works.

Try right clicking on the setup file with the mouse and click on "Run As Administrator" See if that helps with activating the software.
