Sounds interesting aRenegade; I love such games and will definitely check it out.

I love bridge building games as well (one of the reasons I bought World of Goo because there are elements of it in that game). There are several bridge building games available from Garage games, one of my favorite independent game developers, but I’ve yet to find one that combines good game play and graphics. I’m a bit of a graphics whore though I can appreciate any game, even the graphically poorest, so long as there’s good game play.

By the way, I hope you didn’t think I was being funny by mentioning that The Incredible Machine had already been posted; after all, these forums are not my sole preserve for posting games; I just though it useful to link up your post with details such as images videos and reviews of the game. These sorts of games are fast becoming one of my favorite genres of arcade game. I only really play arcade games as a break from my larger games that are rarely downloaded from the internet due to their sizes, some of which are several gigabytes in size. (My Battlefield 2 folder is over 100Gb in size due to all the modifications that have been added to the original game – I have over 200Gb of files for the game, but try to keep the folder as small as possible, lol)

Have a great week

Regards

Whiterabbit

Touché! Nice referrals Stephen, intriguing, I’ll definitely check out those sites. I wasn’t sure about mentioning this before since it's not a free or abandon-ware game, but since it's the Whiterabbit who "broke the ice”, I thought it appropriate to do so now. Armadillo Run may be one of my favorite games ever. The game has been around for a couple of years but, it’s development is like a fine wine. It's a physics based puzzle game.

“You have to build structures for the purpose of getting an Armadillo to a certain point in space. There is a selection of building materials, each with different properties, which can be combined to form almost anything. The realistic physics simulation gives you the freedom to solve each level in many different ways”.

There is a demo download to try out, and the game itself is $20 USD (well actually it’s $19.95 but I won’t quibble over a nickel). I have a hunch you’ll find this game as challenging, addictive, and as thoroughly enjoyable as I do. There’s also a community forum that hosts competitions and discussions about Armadillo Run. A genuine keeper! I’ll leave you with a short list of accolades this game has received:

- Announced as a 2007 Independent Games Festival (IGF) finalist

- Game Tunnel Player's Choice Award, where players vote for their favorite game of 2006

- The VideoJug web site has made a video about improving your brain by playing video games, which features Armadillo Run and other intellect-improving games.

- Ben Schaeffer has written a great book about Armadillo Run called Secrets of the Armadillo Run Masters. It's a well-written and comprehensive guide to the game and includes descriptions and explanations of the advanced techniques used by competition winners.

- Gibbage.co.uk offers Armadillo Run T-shirts! The gibbage.co.uk site now offers Armadillo Run T-shirts.

http://www.armadillorun.com/

Be Advised!!! On occasion this game has driven me into asking myself if I’m really having fun, or is this a latent tendency towards masochism that will require the services of a mental health professional to root out :)

Hi aRenagade, I didn't include the Incredible Machine in Fridays games (though it could easily be regarded as belonging here)because I've already included it in the project a couple of months ago. Well actually, it was meant to be part of the project, but when the game giveaway stopped for a few weeks a couple of months ago I posted it as an alternative as I think it's a brilliant game, especially now that it's abandonware and thought that it could easily replace one of the usual game giveaways:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/3941

Thank you for the Wiki reference, which was very welcome. I should try and place the games synopsis which will list all the games posted in these forums (once I’ve finished checking every post for references and links) in alphabetical order so that community members can check to see if the games have been previously posted. It would also enable information such as yours to be added to the appropriate posts much more easily, thus keeping all the information about particular games in one place. :)

If you are interested in such games you can buy two similar games called Chain Reaction from Garage games and Crazy Machines from Big Fish games, both are superb clones of The Incredible Machine series, though both retail at nearly $20 (you can get the latter for around $7 if you’re a Big Fish Games subscriber). There are also a couple of other games that I'd place in the same category; called Barrel Mania and Blast Miner.

All of these puzzle games use objects that you have to place in a particular sequence to get another object from A to B. The beauty of Chain Reaction, Crazy Machines and Blast Miner is that they ship with level editors so you can design unlimited levels. Also if you go to the Garage games forums you'll be able to download custom made levels (I think there are levels availble for Blast Miner as well), though I've not got a direct link to either of the forums for these games:

Chain Reaction:

A very nice list Steven, there certainly are a lot of really good physics games. Now that we're on the subject I thought I'd mention "Fun-Motion". It's a website dedicated to physics games. Thanks for flying the flag for the genre.

Almost forgot. There's a Wikipedia entitled "The Incredible Machine" where you'll find quite a bit of information and links to some very cool physics games. You can have fun and learn all at the same time.

The following are alternative download links for the games mentioned in the first post. Due to bandwidth limits the links I provided in my first post will not work most of the time due to bandwidth limits having been reached. Sorry for the inconvinience.

I'll add more links as and when I find them. (Just re-check this post every so often. I'll replace the sentence - coming soon - with a working link or with a statement saying it's no longer available elsewhere.

It's been sorted

.

Both kids were actually busy this morning; Emily has been to Ballet, has now gone to the Schools Xmas Fair and then has to go to Gymnastics and Callum has gone to Chester Zoo with his cub pack. So, contrary to what I said above I've had the time to find working links for all the games. :)

You're probably right. I re-checked all these links last week and they worked perfectly. It will probably be a case of bandwidth use; which means that they should be available later. As the rush subsides it probably wont be a problem. Though I may write to the owners of the site and see if they will allow me to upload them to my filefront account (well at least those I can't find new links for).

Please PM me if you want them. I don't want to be putting the effort in if only one or two people are going to bother. Most of these games will probably be available elsewhere so I'll find links for as many of them as possible later today. If only a few do contact me I can probably Email the games to you. Well most of them - a couple are over the 10Mb limit that I have on my Emails, though I could break them down into manageable chunks - the one that comes to mine is Cuball plus one other, the rest can be Emailed.

Several Physics based games developed for the Experimental Game play Project

I decided to post a potpourri of physics based games today, all of which were developed in under a week (as per guidelines of the project). As the games generally don’t stand up to what I consider a good game with respect to replayability and the time it takes to complete the game, I decided to post a whole bunch of them (15) because you can probably complete each game individually within an hour or less. There should be something for everyone here. What actually got me interested in the project was my discovery of the game called Tower of Goo. Which although very simplistic, grabbed my attention enough for me to blindly pay out nearly $20 for a game called World of Goo, which at the time was still under development. I was lucky enough to get on the Beta testers list, so got to play the whole of the first section of World of Goo several months ago, and I must say I immediately thought that this is going to be a brilliant game when it’s finished. It was finally released just over a month ago, nearly 10 months after I paid the money and I was even more pleased with the finished product. I do think at least one other of the games I’m posting today is going to result in a very successful game. Can anyone tell me which they think it is (after playing the games). Just a side note about Tower of Goo, you may think when you play it that how on earth could anyone devise a game around such a simple concept. Let me assure you the final product is awesome (hey I’m not a rep for 2D Boy, lol. Just telling it like it is as far as I’m concerned.

Anyway, I hope I haven’t overloaded you with the significantly longer list of games than I usually post for the weekday games project. Just enjoy, I’m off for another week while Wizzard surprises us with his choices of free games. I’ve got some more great games lined up for you starting from the 15th December. :)

Please Note:

Due to bandwidth limits being exceeded the links I've provided below are no longer available at this time. Thankfully I've managed to find alternative links elsewhere for most of the games (see post below). I will endeavor to find links for all the games over the next few days.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Tribute to the Rolling Boulder (5.12Mb):

You play as the infamous rolling boulder. Roll over the archeologists and protect the honor of the golden idols of fertility.

http://experimentalgameplay.com/game.php?g=496

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crayon Physics (5.63Mb)

You play with crayons and physics. The goal of the game is to move the red ball so that it collects the stars. You can cause the red ball to move by drawing physical objects. With left mouse button you can draw and with right you can remove objects. Space - Will reset the level. Esc - Will open the menu. It was created with C , SDL and with a home grown engine.

http://crayon-physics.en.softonic.com/

http://experimentalgameplay.com/

The commercial version of this called Crayon Physics Deluxe has just been released (Jan 09)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cuball: (61.7Mb)

Cuball is a two-player cooperative puzzle game, where you play two very different characters, a Cube and a Ball, who have to cooperate to finish a series of levels of ever increasing difficulty. The game has a combination of team-based game play as you find in LittleBigPlanet and the elements of a realistically behaving game with physics such as Switchball (one of the best marble simulation games I’ve ever played). On top of that it offers a chance for the players to think outside of the box and solve puzzles together in new ways. This game requires you to have XNA Framework 2.0 installed and 2 Xbox360-controllers connected to your PC, instructions can be found in the readme.txt, enjoy

http://experimentalgameplay.com/game.php?g=779

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Druid Soccer: (3.29Mb)

This is a two player game, where you play an ancient traditional game of Druid Soccer. The object of the game is to push the big boulder into your opponent’s goal.

Gravity Warz (<1Mb):

Gravity WARZ world has two types of objects: positive spheres and negative spheres (orbs). Each object has mass, and behaves according to gravity forces. You can drain force from other orbs, and they can do the same to you.

Kartofan (<1Mb):

This game looks likw a mix of Gish and Elastomania. Use keys "A" and "D" to roll and "G" to jump. (requires .NET Framework 2.0)

If you’ve not played Gish you’ve not lived. Any self respecting gamer should own a copy of Gish and be waiting with bated breath for the sequel that is under construction as I write. lol :)

Kimboot 1: (12Mb)

I wasn’t sure about this one, but hey, it’s a game. You control a hand holding some very heavy ball on a rope (physics simulation included), and there are a lot of enemies trying to eat your hand. Y ou have to stop them by! Crushing 'em all with the ball!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Macesmash: (7.64Mb)

This game was built around the theme of "chain". It started out as a desire to construct a physics model of a swinging chain which could be whipped around to destroy things. In its final incarnation, the chain became a spring model, the enemies became spiders, and the game ended up being pretty fun.

Please read the following: 1) Yes, I know it's technically a flail and not a mace :) 2) Some will find it awkward to manipulate the mace handle using the keyboard, and will ask why it isn't a mouse game instead. I originally conceived it as a mouse game but I found that with mouse control it was just too darn easy, and was not fun. As a keyboard game I find it challenging, and enjoyable. 3) The game is released as an MSI installer, and will install the Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 if you don't already have it. Once installed it will show up in your start menu. 4) The game can be uninstalled using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.

Moonlumber (1.58Mb):

Control the ship with the arrow keys, pick up trees with your crane and toss them with space. You get more points for tossing a tree into the vortex as opposed to just pulling it there, the longer the tree is tossed the more points you get. If you collide with the moon all your points are lost

Most of the above games are ideal for filling in those odd minutes you may have spare, or for just taking a short break from more in depth games. You've probably come across at least a few of the above games. I first came across plus and minus in one of those Best of games last year (I think it was for one of the big PC magazines. Anyway, don't forget to tell me which game younthink will be a big one when it's released as a full game. :)
