These are the last few games that I wanted to post from Cornell University at least until they create more. Roto-Cosmos is a puzzle/platform game. Atomik is a 3d spaceship shooter type game. Shine is a 2d platformer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roto-Cosmos

Help the block to the goal in this spacey 3d puzzle game. Challenging, fun, and colorful for everyone!

Roto-Cosmos is an amazing puzzle game with a simple design involving 3 main types of blocks. Puzzles are based off of picking up stacks of block and moving them around to create a path to the goal block. Standard blocks have no special properties but can be picked up and moved around. Triangle blocks with special properties depending on it's position. If it is pointing up it acts as a spike which kills you if you fall on it. If it is placed beside another block, it acts as a ramp and can also change the direction of gravity if placed beside a wall of blocks. Magnet blocks come in two colours: black and white. Same type magnet blocks repel each other and opposites attract. If two opposite type magnet blocks touch each other they get neutralized and become normal blocks. This game allows you to undo moves with 'Z' which makes the game fun because if you make a mistake you can just undo it without having to replay levels from the start.

Controls:
Mouse - moves camera
Left Arrow - move left
Right Arrow - move right
Down Arrow - drop down when hanging on a block
Up Arrow - climb up when hanging on a block
Shift - move faster
Space - pick up/throw blocks
Z - undo moves
F5 - quicksave
F7 - quickload
Esc - quit level

Download (5.69 MB):

http://gdiac.cis.cornell.edu/showgame.php?id=rotocosmos

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atomik

Atomik is an esoteric, subatomic visualization of seven dimensional space. The user pilots an energy core through the reality, discharging sparks and collecting atoms and molecular configurations to expand their abilities. Other cores populate the space, with focuses on certain types of energy in correspondance to their home dimension. Breaking apart these molecules and cores increases the user's inventory. Use the navigation on the left to learn more about the visualization, or DOWNLOAD it for yourself.

Atomik is a 3d 'spaceship' shooter whith many upgrade and a dimension jumping feature. Your ship is called an 'energy core' that has the ability to be upgraded by collecting atoms. At the start you only have the first three basic upgrades of each type. To unlock more you must find and defeat more powerful enemies that are usually found by the center of each dimension near the bright light. You can also defeat certain special enemies to unlock certain special upgrades as well as new energy cores (ships).

There are 7 main types of atoms that can be used to upgrade your ship. There are 7 dimensions that you can instantly travel between. Each dimension has a color corresponding to the different atom types. Atoms are more frequently found in their dimension as well as enemies using the abilities of that type more often.

The goal is to kill all enemies and pick up all atoms and energy (health) in each dimension. It's a bit repetitive but at least you can unlock upgrades along the way. Sometimes it's hard to find the last few objects needed to complete each dimension so I recommend saving and reloading to reset their positions until you find them. There are four difficulty settings that seems to change the number of collectables to find and the number enemies to face. There is also an "impossible mode" in the options menu that I think makes enemies shoot more frequently.

Controls:

accelerate, decelerate, and strafe - WASD
select nearest enemy - Tab
change dimensions - Shift
pause - Escape
adjust trajectory - Left-Click
spark - Right-Click
change cores/configure - Mid-Click
quick save - F5
quick load - F6

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shine

Shine is a 2D platformer game designed and built in Unity. In Shine, you take control of a one of the few surviving Lumens and unleash the powers of light to rid the world of darkness. Light Vaulting (shooting the ground below or behind you while shooting) allows you to launch yourself to new heights. In the epic battle to save your homeworld, will you have the courage and skills to defeat the Darklings?

Shine is a 2d platformer game with one unique feature. You have the ability to do light vaulting - shooting the ground to cause an explosion to launch you to otherwise inaccessible areas. Each level is filled with glowing orbs that you can collect to increase your health. You can try to collect them all if you want but I just ignored all the hard to reach ones. Enemies cannot be hurt most of the gameplay is spent avoiding enemies and traps. You can also find and fight two bosses in the middle and in the end of the game.

Forgotten Sky is an awesome retro themed platformer from Cornell University. Because it's retro themed, the graphics aren't amazing but the gameplay is excellent. You have a rope gun that you can use to grapple objects and swing across gaps. There are lots of traps including saw blades, gun turrets, and more. The controls are all explained by an ingame tutorial. This game also has lots of easter eggs. Several of the levels have a hidden companion cube (from Portal). So download it unless you want to miss out on an awesome platformer. :)

Forgotten Sky takes place in a futuristic era where mankind has descended underground to survive. The game follows the journey of Caelum, the main character, as he treks upwards to see the surface of the Earth for the first time. Equipped with a rope gun and a trusty katana-hoe, it will take skill and timing for Caelum to piece together the story of his missing brother and succeed in his quest to see... the Forgotten Sky.

Today, I decided to post an exploration/platformer game by Cornell University with a unique art style called Restibo. There are no enemies so it's all exploration in a massive world to find 7 keys and get home. The world is filled with strange physics anomalies such as black squares that you can attach to and launch from with a slingshot, and anti-gravity circles with black dots that you can orbit around. You can also find many items for upgrading your capabilities. It will probably take a long time to find all the items but luckily the save points also show directions to the nearest items when activated.

Alone in a world of circles and squares, Restibo seeks out the seven keys needed to unlock the dark planet core. Scattered amongst the hanging blocks are Voids, floating circles that nullify gravity and contain items like feathers, springs, spikes, claws, and bubbles. These items help Restibo advance through the layers of the atmosphere, flinging from one block to the next to reach larger and more intricate Voids.

Controls:

Move Mouse on Ground: Roll
Left Click on Ground: Bounce
Left Click/Hold in Block: Stick
Left Click/Hold near dot in Void: Orbit
Right Click in Air: Glide
Right Click at Save Point: Fill / Teleport

Spring: Upgrades Jump
Claw: Upgrades Slingshot
Feather: Upgrades Glide
Spike: Upgrades Block Pushing Ability
Bubbles: Used to activate save points

Today, we have an unusual real time strategy from Cornell University. Kaedyo takes place in a unique fantasy world inside a notebook. What makes this game different is that you cannot directly control your units but indirectly influence their movements by drawing on the screen with magic pens.

The creative mind meets the thinking mind in this exciting mix of tactical strategy with an artistic edge! Trapped in the ink and paper world of a notebook, you must employ the powers of the colored pens on the battlefield, writing your own story of survival as you play.

Imagine... one day you are doodling away in your notebook, lost in the act of creating your own fantasy world of beasts and magic. Suddenly, your notebook glows with a strange hue, and in a brilliant flash you find yourself... in your notebook, in that world, amidst all of your creations. Why were you transported there? What's going on? Act fast, because not all creatures of the world you created are friendly towards their creator, and others have a hidden agenda for the powers of the world-changing pens you hold in your hand - the very tools that were used to shape Kaedyo and its inhabitants.

Kaedyo features a semi-real time battle system with a real time pen system. While units only move and attack when their movement bars fill up, pens can be used at any time to directly affect and manipulate the playable area, blocking enemy attacks and impeding enemy movement. Both friendly units and enemy units are affected most favorably with the color that matches them and most unfavorably with the color that is their direct opposite. Black blocks all colors. While the pens are powerful, you must be wary of certain restrictions, as ink is limited and drawn marks eventually expire. Wasting valuable ink on trivial purposes may render a stage impossible to beat! So use your pens carefully to guide and defend your characters on the board, defeating enemies as you go and surviving through each level. But think and act fast. Your way home depends on it.

We're off to Discovery Cove in a little under an hour. I've recharged the video camera's battery and the spare. The stills camera has likewise been charged up. We're going to split the family so that we can take video. You're no longer allowed to take cameras into the dolphin pool; but you can film from the sidelines. The production video isn't that good as it shows everyone that are in the pool at the time rather than being just family specific. (A friend of ours lent us their bought video of the experience and I reckon I can do a lot better)

Yea, Wrabbit! Just have them pull you. They're quite good at that. :)
My wonderful photographer husband filmed my daughter with the dolphins... only to find out that (you guessed it) the battery was quite dead! Lol. Luckily I was taking snaps behind him.

Nice one rO, thanks for filling in. The internet connection has been rather sporadic since arriving at my hotel in Orlando. I discovered today that the hotels internet security kept blocking me whenever I visited the giveaway site. Thankfully the network administrator has tagged the giveaway site as okay for me, so I shoul be around a little more now. Your selection of free games has been great. Thank you.

I'm off to swim with the dolphins in the morning. :) (Well for about 10 yards, lol)

Hi Spodo Commodo,

Yep, that's familiar.
I've seen this before with GameX (the game engine that was used). Sometimes it seems as if breathing during the launch can cause those games to crash, but mouse movement has my vote.
Eventide crashed on my first attempt as well and it has produced a fresh debug log on every run since, but if I don't move the mouse at all while the game loads then I can eventually play without problems. It takes a little while to load (especially the first time), but it's worth the wait IMO.
Hope you can get it going too!

Regards,
Lan

The behaviour has now changed both before and after updating DirectX; it still crashes but doesn't lock the machine up (so I can just carry on without rebooting) and the debug log now says:

DirectDraw: Access to this surface is being refused because the surface memory is gone. The DirectDrawSurface object representing this surface should have Restore called on it.

Is this familiar to anyone?

p.s I won't carry on with this for too long because I'll just give it up as a lost cause since nothing else has similar problems.

Thanks for the link but could someone please help?

I've downloaded the game but when I try running it, it displays that it's loading and then, once that's complete, it leaves the whole screen blank, I can't even bring up the task manager to kill it and so have to turn off my machine to reboot. Note: I have XP + SP3.

And I even tried it under DOSbox just in case (it didn't like that).

There isn't any info on the webpages about compatability so what am I doing wrong?

EDIT: The debug log says:

DirectDraw: Action not supported.
GameX: Blur speed test FAILED, blurring disabled.

I haven't had any problems with DirectDraw before (no idea if any other programs use it).

Eventide is a platform game from Cornell University. You have a magic sword that can deflect projectiles that the monsters shoot at you. Using the sword, you can also switch the element of the projectile that you deflect back to defeat enermies and solve puzzles.

As the knight Gareth, you must shed light upon a web of lies and deceit as you rid your king’s castle of an army of phantoms. Only by combining the powers of fire and ice with your energy-deflecting sword will you discover the truth and restore peace to the land.

Using only your trusty magical sword you must defeat a castle full of Fire and Ice Demons who will try to destroy you by throwing balls of fire and ice in your direction. Since they are demonic entities you can't defeat them using the conventional tactics. Instead you employ the power of the Elements, which has been captured in the Elemental Power Stones to defeat phantoms, possessed gargoyles, an angry gatekeeper, one huge worm, and Amauro the demon king himself.
