For a short while yesterday MS sold a LOT of copies for $15 once word got out that they used the honor system regarding your win7 purchase date etc. & didn't verify anything. Didn't post it while it was live as it seemed like fraud to me. Now it seems you enter your win7 license # & MS verifies when it was activated.

T2'12: Huawei Routers, Pin Pad Terminals Under Security Scrutiny
http://www.securelist.com/en/blog/208193917/T2_12_Huawei_Routers_Pin_Pad_Terminals_Under_Security_Scrutiny

"Felix FX Lindner of Recurity Labs GmbH started the day off with a close look at Huawei's security response process and (hint: it's not close to being adequate) and a technical dissection of the internals of the networking giant's VRT software that powers routers and hardware around the world.

Lindner's presentation included an introduction of the VRT architecture, the special properties of configurations and services and a hands-on demo of how to reverse engineer the operating system.

Coming on the heels of the U.S. government's nervousness about the use of Huawei gear, Lindner's talk was particularly timely. One thing that stood out what his statement that he was unable to pinpoint any backdoors on VRT-powered routers.

But, as Lindner explains, the combination of easy-to-find vulnerabilities and Huawei's tenuous approach to security response means that backdoors aren't really necessary."

Microsoft Vulnerability Research Advisory MSVR12-017
Vulnerabilities in FFmpeg Libavcodec Could Allow Arbitrary Code Execution
Published: Tuesday, October 16, 2012
Version: 1.0
FFmpeg. FFmpeg has remediated the vulnerability in their software.
Vulnerabilities exist in the way that FFmpeg libavcodec parses ASF, QT, and WMV files. These vulnerabilities result in memory corruption issues within libavcodec, allowing arbitrary code execution. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
Microsoft Vulnerability Research reported these vulnerabilities to and coordinated with FFmpeg to ensure remediation of these vulnerabilities. The vulnerabilities have been assigned CVE entries CVE-2012-5359, CVE-2012-5360, and CVE-2012-5361, respectively, in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures list. For more information, including information about updates from FFmpeg, see the FFmpeg download page.
Affected Software
FFmpeg 0.10 and earlier versions
Non-Affected Software
FFmpeg 0.11
FFmpeg 1.0

Exploit code published for RDP worm hole; Does Microsoft have a leak?
Summary: The code publication has set off alarm bells in the corridors at Redmond because there are clear signs that Microsoft’s pre-patch vulnerability sharing program has been breached or has suffered a major leak.
Microsoft says it has strict guidelines to ensure the data doesn’t fall into the wrong hands but, in this case, my sources tell me the Chinese hackers had access to MAPP information even before the patch was released.
“I can say with 100% certainty that MAPP information got into the wrong hands,” said a security researcher with access to the MAPP information.

SEE: Microsoft: Expect exploits for critical Windows worm hole ]

This was confirmed by Luigi Auriemma, the security researcher credited by Microsoft with finding and reporting the RDP code execution vulnerability. On Twitter, Auriemma said the a packet stored in the Chinese proof-of-concept was the “EXACT ONE” he provided to TippingPoint ZDI (Zero Day Initiative), the company that bought the rights to the bug information.

I warned that it was a risky move because of the likelihood that information flowing through MAPP could be siphoned off and sold to malicious attackers.

http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/Exploit-circulating-for-Windows-RDP-vulnerability-1474191.html

In response to these events, Auriemma has now publicly released his advisory from 16 May 2011, including the PoC codeDirect download. The H's associates at heise Security found that the PoC is indeed able to elicit a blue screen of death on an unpatched Windows 7 system.

Looking at Microsoft's track record, I can imagine that an accidental back door will turn up eventually. Many of the automatic updates that we receive (on all our operating systems) are to fix security vulnerabilities. Some of these could give a hacker access to your computer unless they are patched. As for intentional backdoors? I refuse to speculate. I see enough unmarked sedans following me as it is.

Remember, question what those in power tell you. It is the only way to keep them honest.

A MICROSOFT SPOKESVOLE has denied fears that the US National Security Agency (NSA) placed surveillance technology into Windows 7.

The worry is that if the NSA was involved with the development of Windows 7 it might have put "backdoors" into Microsoft's code that would help it track users and intercept users' communications.

Since no one outside Microsoft except a few secretive government agencies and very large corporate customers can review its Windows 7 source code, most people simply have to take the Vole's word that there are no intentionally built-in security holes in it.
How about unintentionally ?

Essentially the requirement for an internet connection has always been required only for two things.

1. To actually download the giveaway software.

2. To verify the setup or activation is being being run prior to the Giveaway expiry.

Thats all - the paranoid privacy information gathering conspiracy on behalf of the GOTD team I believe is unfounded.

However for the rare individual giveaway authors who require an email address or contact details to be provided before providing a setup code - I suggest using fictional details or temporary email account. History has shown some giveaway developers have less respect for your privacy than GOTD has.

Generally speaking - Downloading and installing giveaway software requires no personal information or contact details to be provided.

Yours: getting a gift?
Or the business of GOTD: paying the developer for a product that you get for free?
And don't forget all the volunteers, without them this work would not have become reality. BuBBy as Administrator and Lee as Moderator are best known for us, but they have several "team-mates".
To which time do you refer when you want have back the "old way" ? I get my giveaway of the day since more than a year; I can not remember an offline activation.

I don't think it is an unreasonable demand to register the give-away-programs online, even with an email address requested.

Hi folks,

GAOTD used to have a SIMPLER Activation format for programs ... a Text file attached with a "Activation Key" that user can enter and the product was ready to use.

With the new Format of Activation ... one HAS TO BE ONLINE to get activated. I guess that is so Info can be gathered on the person Activating a program. I might be paranoid ... but I guess Privacy nowadays should be worth something.

CAN WE GO BACK to the old way fo doing business!?!?!?

Thanks,
G!

Well, my mother was a gorgeous redhead!

I see myself in the mirror every day.

Because of those two facts, I can judge beauty on a scale between those two extremes.

My mum made my braids extra fast, she tried always to make me a neat looking girl. In vain, after some minutes my locks curled out again, and that was only the beginning...
She used to say "krause Haare, krauser Sinn" it means: curly hair and muddled thoughts (or something like that) ...

i love the braids. i wish i could do that.
i do still braid my hair sometimes, even if some might say i'm too old for braids. i do a lot of things that i'm "too old" for. i'm so tempted to post some pics of myself, although, i really don't have many good ones.
