Search & Destroy: Why You Can't Trust Google

I’d love to read it. But it’s available only in old-fashioned book form, and not as an eBook. Come on, guys. Enter the 21st Century, please: I’m not buying any more paper.

This is the other side of the Google story—the unauthorized book that Google does not want you to read. In Search & Destroy, Google expert Scott Cleland, shows that the world’s most powerful company is not who it pretends to be.

Google pretends to be a harmless lamb, but chose a full-size model of a Tyrannosaurus Rex as its mascot. Beware the T-Rex in sheep’s clothing.

Google has acquired far more information, both public and private, and has invented more ways to use it, than anyone in history. Information is power, and in Google’s case, it’s the power to influence and control virtually everything the Internet touches.

Learn how Google’s pervasive tracking and profiling destroys privacy and individualism.

Have you heard about Japan?

Wired.co.uk: "Japan's controversial anti-piracy law comes into effect"
http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-10/02/japan-strict-copyright-law

"As of 1 October, one of the most stringent anti-filesharing regimes in the world has come into effect in Japan.

In June 2012, Wired.co.uk reported that the anti-piracy legislation had passed both houses of the Japanese Diet. Now authorities are able to arrest and charge people for downloading copyrighted content illegally, with a maximum penalty of up to two years in prison or a fine of up to two million yen (£15,841). The bill has been called "one of the most draconian in the world" by Torrent Freak for its criminalisation of, and severe penalties for, even the most minor of infringements."

Why The MPAA Can't 'Win The Hearts And Minds' Of The Public: File Sharing Is Mainstream
from the game-over dept

A few weeks ago we wrote about a new "digital music index" from London-based Musicmetrics looking at the popularity of file sharing by location in the UK. The results showed that the act of file sharing was mainstream, rather than a limited activity. The same group has now released a US version of its report, which more or less shows the same thing.

Americans downloaded more than 97 million albums and singles using BitTorrent during the first half of 2012, with Gainesville, FL named as the country’s “pirate capital” in an influential new report. Of the 97 million torrents downloaded across the USA, around 78 percent were albums and 22 percent singles. Assuming an album contains 10 tracks, the total number of songs downloaded would have surpassed 759 million in six months.

The report admits that not all of the songs being downloaded were unauthorized, but suggests that since many of them are, the characterizations are fair. Of course, just as we saw in the UK, all this really seems to show is how widespread file sharing is.

First: that copying is not like theft because it is non-rivalrous–making a copy does not deprive the owner of the use of the good.

The younger generation just seems to believe that basic sharing with friends and family should be seen as perfectly reasonable. The different ways of slicing the data certainly suggest that the blanket argument that "piracy is theft" is going to completely miss its mark in educational campaigns. People just don't buy it.

At the end of the intro, instead of going to the next screen to begin the game It takes me back to the set up file page. Does anybody know how to fix this problem? If so, please leave a comment with instructions. Thanks a million!

Hi BuBBy
Like I said this is an old system but still higher spec than the game requires according to the blurb. i.e
300 MHz Processor or better, 64 Mb RAM or better, Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP, Microsoft DirectX 8.0 or better

I doubt many machines with that spec have a later graphics card.

Anyway no problem, I'll download it to my other system this evening and try again.

Wow thats an old video card. The Riva TNT2 is definitely going to be a problem on this machine (apart from the low memory).

The Game requires DirectX 8 or better - but the TNT2 Riva is a Direct3D 5/6 Generation card. If the game requires 3d video hardware support from Direct3D 8.0 - you would need at least a GeForce 3 generation card.

Hi I'm posting this for general information, it may help others.
I downloaded LEAF BUSTER and installed it, but when I try to run it I get the error message "Sorry this game can't run on this computer, Check system requirements"
The System requirements are pretty basic and although this happens to be an old machine it is better than the required set up, it's spec's are.
Intel Celeron 750Mhz
MSI K7m Pro MoBo
640Mb PC100 SDRam
Nvidia Riva TNT2 Model 64 32Mb
Via AC'97 Audio
DirectX 9c
Windows 2000 Pro + Service pack 4

Leaf blower is a neat little game, I've seen it played, So a little disappointed, but I will try it on my other system when I get home, hopefully with better luck

Hi, thanks for the reply. I figured that out but as my last reply sounds like I was stumped when in reality, I was giving myself the V8 to the head not thinking about a delay sooner. I think "DUH" would fit ;) I do have another question however, how do you sign up for Freedownload center? It says to log in but there is nothing I could find to sign up to begin with. I tried with this user name and password for here which obviously doesn't work.
