You must have mental telepathy, hotdoge3! Am only person using this puter. Use it under name of "Owner". But in past few days I'm getting (logged on) as Administrator. Had learned long ago should not use it as Admin, to use another name, so I use "Owner" daily. Tried to fix it so when I turn this thing on it goes to Owner, but can't figure out how to do it. Have to go on as Admin then log off and log back on. Oh so confusing.

Anyway, about all I recall as to WHY a person shouldn't sign on daily as Administrator had to do with mistakingly changing settings, makes it easier for hackers, or whatever. So it was real nice to see your post. (And yes, I read the news at cnet.)

yes, absolutely it is worth it. My subscription ran out about two months ago. Ive been using the trials, first pro and now the regular system mechanic, but here in a few days

I'll be getting system mechanic, not pro. pro is useless on 64bit anyway, the firewall and antivirus doesnt work with it.
----------------------------------------
I read hotdoge3 article and looked up some myself. My explanation is oversimplified, but running the ram defrag is nice feature to have. If you have enough ram and you do, you wont notice issues that much. Like hanging programs that you close and stuff like that.

But lets say you have 2 gigs or 1 and are running it after using a couple of programs. You can free up a half gig of ram.
I didn't read that, that comes from experience from when I used to a low powered computer. My computer would lag from running a few programs and I would run the ram defrag and it was like new again.
But running it is just temporary till you run more programs and fill the ram back up.
-----------------------------------------
Anyway, there are few programs that I strongly about and this is one of them. This Iolo's flag ship so to speak and other programs have tried to beat them, but they cant.
And all their features are safe, including their registry tools. It is safe to set it to autopilot.

I'm pretty sure hotdoge feels the similar too.

Thank you all I just don't want to destroy my ram and since I didn't know what it does I thought I'd ask. I thought of getting something for the hard drive. I don't like the defrag in system mechanic. Maybe I will eventually. I got system mechanic last month and I got another year for $14.95 or something like that I used a coupon. So it doesn't expire till Oct.3, 2011.

I doubt it will ever be on giveawayoftheday. Who hasn't heard of it? It is really worth the money especially if you have more than one computer. You can use it on three computers. We have it on two. It's good on both of them till Oct. 3, 2011.

I run it with the auto pilot on, with exception of defragging my hard drive and my registry.

I have diskeeper for my hard drive and I will do my registry manually. I hate registry screen popping up to defrag when I in the middle of install or something.

That ram defrag, that just helps clear out your ram of left over crap that shouldnt be there. It's cool, but it really doesnt do much.

Does anyone have System Mechanic 9? I was wondering if it was good to put your the program on auto pilot? I was also wondering about the defrag ram tool in it. Is it good to do that on it's own?

I have 4 gigs of ram. I noticed in system mechanic if there is anything below 50% it says I should defrag ram? Is that good to do or no? Thank you

Just occurred to me, too, that you could used that suggestion that I posted in the other thread. Use something like Returnil or Windows Steady State when you apply the updates. Then, if there's damage, you can easily wipe it away. If they're good, you can make the changes permanent.

The new update badly messed up Copmom's system and others, too. I'd do the updates in manual, so I could pick and choose if I were you. She found on the web that this update has been crashing some XP systems and a system restore is blocked:
KB971486
I'd be cautious before installing that one!
Of course, you could avoid the Firefox killer that way, too. But you'd have to not get the .net fixes. Good ol' MS!

Speaking of this security issue - today my firefox 3.5 spontaneously and unexpectedly displayed an alert for the "net-framework assistant and Presentation Foundation" add-ons. In fact, Firefox blocked them, and I was very pleased with this action. Wow!

Thanks hotdoge.
Funny enough minutes after reading your post I got a message in Firefox that some addons were blocked automatically, because they interfered with FF.
(Dotnet framework assistant,Windows Presentation Foundation and Google advanced toolbar)
Here's an interesting link to the Mozilla blocklist

Remember that Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant add-on that Microsoft sneaked into Firefox without explicit permission from end users? Well, the code in that add-on has a serious code execution vulnerability that exposes Firefox users to the "browse and you're owned" attacks that are typically used in drive-by malware downloads.
The flaw was addressed in the MS09-054 bulletin that covered "critical" holes in Microsoft's Internet Explorer

but, as Redmond's Security Research & Defense team explains, the drive-by download risk extends beyond Microsoft's browser.

While the vulnerability is in an IE component, there is an attack vector for Firefox users as well. The reason is

that .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installs a "Windows Presentation Foundation" plug-in in Firefox.

Now, Microsoft's security folks are actually recommending that Firefox users uninstall the buggy add-on:

http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=4614%22%20target=%22_blank

For Firefox users with .NET Framework 3.5 installed, you may use “Tools”-> “Add-ons” -> “Plugins”, select

“Windows Presentation Foundation”, and click “Disable”.

as for NET.Framework auto up date you will get 3.5, I set up date on manual & say no to net Framework 3 & 3.5

Glad when I can provide a smile, Suki. And I'm always happy when I can say "you're both right". As a big a blowhard as I am, I actually don't like to argue. As someone with a degree in broadcasting and an amateur historian, here's a little 411. As you likely know, many TV classics started out as radio hits. Gunsmoke is another example, and I Love Lucy came about because Lucy's first big success was a radio sitcom called My Favorite Husband. In fact, Gail Gordon - Mr. Mooney from the Lucy Show - was one of the supporting actors in that show.

Jack Webb's Joe Friday had more than one partner. The original radio partner was Ben Romero - played by Barton Yarbrough. The series, though still on radio, started on TV for 8 years in '51. Yarbrough died right at the beginning so they gave Friday a new partner. First, Ed Jacobs - Barney Phillips - then Frank Smith, played by Ben Alexander. Webb and Alexander clicked and Smith became the most well known partner.

And, of course, your already know you're right about Harry Morgan playing Bill Gannon in the color revival of the series. For my money, Morgan was the best sidekick. He was the best in playing low key yet quirky at the same time.

If you haven't already seen it, here's the Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragnet_(series)

Yeah, a lot of neat stuff on Hulu. You like sexy and suave guys? Check out Robert Wagner in "It Takes a Thief". That'll make your hubby jealous! LOL

I think that Harry Morgan played Joe's sidekick in the TV series, will have to dig further....
If I remember "The Shadow" then mine is blatant, %-)

He did indeed play in the show with Jack Webb...albeit at a different time! I was just a wee one at the time that the radio was the only thing, then we got a big clunky black and white console from sears, complete with radio and record player!

Suki

I am getting to like hulu...

Ummmm, Suki, I hate to point this out but Sherman T. Potter is a M.A.S.H. character. The Dragnet radio program was from the 40's and 50's and was turned in a TV program in the late 50's I think. I think Sargent Joe Friday was responsible for the phrase "Just the facts Ma'am. Just the facts."

Oh dear, I think my age is showing. :)
