Noticed what may be the start of a trend -- just like when win7 came out, many people are claiming that with win8 there's no need to worry about security or security software, and with Security Essentials a part of win8, there is a bit of truth to that. Win8 users need to realize though that you Always have to worry about, be mindful of security, & as pointed out above, Security Essentials is far from perfect.

PC World - "Antivirus on Windows 8: Looking at Your Options"
http://www.pcworld.com/article/259876/antivirus_on_windows_8_looking_at_your_options.html

"To compare the protection strength of Security Essentials to that other free and paid antiviruses, you can refer to AV-Test's website for its latest testing results. Those results, at this writing, show that Security Essentials provides great malware repair and removal: placing third, just behind Bitdefender and Kaspersky. But the program's results for malware detection are much worse: It placed 21st in a field of 22."

http://securitywatch.pcmag.com/none/304206-many-security-products-fail-exploit-blocking-test

Many Security Products Fail Exploit Blocking Test
No application or operating system is perfect. Perfection just isn't possible. An imperfection that allows malefactors to take control of your computer or execute arbitrary code is called a vulnerability, and the attack that does the dirty deed is called an exploit. Until the vendor patches a newly-discovered vulnerability, consumer and business users must depend on their security software to protect against attack. In a recent test by NSS Labs, quite a few security products proved seriously ineffective at blocking exploits.

Exploits Collected

The CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) dictionary lists many years worth of exploits. Each exploit gets a unique reference number, first the current year and then the exploit's order of discovery within the year. So, for example, CVE-2008-4844 is the 4,844th exploit discovered in 2008.

Delivery Methods

NSS Labs divided the research results two ways. First, they tested using both standard HTTP connections and encrypted HTTPS connections. Second, they split out testing for Internet Explorer 6 from the rest. It's true that IE6 is obsolete, but many businesses still use it.

In the IE6 test, McAfee successfully blocked every single exploit. Norton and Kaspersky came close, with 96.4 percent and 92.9 percent respectively.

Others didn't do nearly as well. Microsoft Security Essentials blocked just 42.9 percent, while F-Secure and Panda came in under 30 percent.

Few consumers are still using IE6, so the main test using exploits on modern browsers and applications is more significant. Kaspersky dominated this test with 92.2 percent of exploits blocked. Next up was avast!, with 81.9 percent, followed by Norton with 74.1 percent. Over half of the thirteen tested products blocked fewer than two-thirds of this more-representative exploit collection.

Then, too, Norton (and others) demonstrated limited protection against exploits arriving via HTTPS.

The Java programming language was once touted as a "Write Once, Run Anywhere" solution. For malicious hackers, it's now more like "Write Once, Attack Anywhere." Java is a prime tool in many exploits. NSS Labs recommends disabling or completely removing Java unless you need it for a specific reason.

I managed a "knowing smile" when reading this on the ie7pro website.

Despite the growing popularity of Firefox, there are many who still use Internet Explorer 7 everyday, either because they haven't heard of Firefox, they haven't mustered the courage to install it, they are too accustomed to using IE or due to necessity (many offices use Windows with NT authentication and IE is thus the defacto browser). Whatever the reason to run IE, they should still be able to remix the Web like the lucky Firefox users. Thus, IE7pro Script.

So as a Firefox user, I now feel either smart, brave, flexible or a free rebel. IE7 users are now almost as lucky as Firefox users. IMO even partial Greasemonkey support is a huge step forward for IE7. Nice find, Lee.
